Google Pixel Rant - Google Pixel 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

This applies to all pixel models but why do people suck at selling these phones its like damn near impossable to find a factory unlocked one and the ones you think are factory unlocked are either a dickhead sellers that say its factory unlocked when its verizon or ee or b people who dont know better its hard as hell to find a factory unlocked pixel 2 or og pixel i see people on ebay swappa and more where they go list it as factory unlocked but then you ask questions and find out its a verizon or ee model phone or they just flat out say its factory unlocked and scam you and i get that like no one cares about unlocking the bootloader but some people do and for those people its hard as hell to get your hands on a factory unlocked model

I feel your pain! I'm sitting here typing this on an og Google Pixel 2. Battery is getting worn out but I feel it's worth replacing the battery as I think it's been down hill for Pixel devices since Pixel 2!

Total Wireless Branded Nexus 6p?

My Nexus 5x **** the bed so I'm on a search for a replacement. I found what I think is new Total Wireless Nexus 6p for $385 at Walmart. I'm wondering if anyone knows if I can just pop my Verizon sim in and go or if total Wireless locks it.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Total-Wi...75035&wl11=online&wl12=55091210&wl13=&veh=sem
Any help is appreciated. Trying to buy some time to see how pixel 2 is after release.

I did some research and Total Wireless says all there branded phones are locked but there are several people in different forums that said they put a sim card in with different providers and it worked. I'm sure Total Wireless would say it's locked but I don't think that's possible with a Nexus.

I found that info as well. Even if it works, I'm now asking myself if it's worth it when you can get a LG g6 from b&h for $549 shipped.
Situation sucks. R/pickanandroidforme recommended the pixel but the cost and issues I've read don't sit well with me. But my LG died (charging port burnt up among other issues) yet I find myself considering the G6. ?
Anyone ever get an answer on this? TW aka Tracfone says they are not unlocked (rather than saying they are locked ??) but aren't Nexus 6p's all unlocked ? I wonder if these are new or refurbished also - nothing stated in Walmart ad. It seems unless they have had a special hardware mod to these or a locked b/l you could flash one with another 6p ROM and be good to go if it was locked (which I doubt). I suspect they aren't making a penny on the phone price so they just want to get monthly paying customers and don't want people to know they are not locked. Just my guess anyway....
Looks like a stock Nexus 6p to me...
I decided to roll the dice on this since I needed a new Nexus for Google Fi device to replace my recently broken Nexus 6.
Long story short, the device I received from Walmart appears to be a fully stock Nexus 6p.
I took it out of the box, enabled USB debugging and sideloaded the OTA 7.1.2 direct from Google.
It activated with my Google Fi SIM card without issue.
Total Wireless customer service doesn't know what they're talking about. The people responding to the questions about "is this phone unlocked?" are going off the same script for all their other branded phones. But some of the comments on the Walmart page state that people were successfully able to pop in a T-Mobile or other non-Total Wireless SIM. Price is now down to $365 thru Walmart, BTW.
I'm sorta kinda tempted to pick one of these up. I have a Moto X Pure that the USB port was getting wobbly on and I looked to replace it with something that has a fingerprint sensor. Tried out an unlocked LG V20 but returned it. Have an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge at the moment but I'm on the fence with it.
Could you test with other carrier? I am also interest to use on AT&T. I would really appreciate it!
Thanks!

Oh yeah, let me get right on that for you, ok? Haha!
Read the posts. Carrier unlocked means carrier unlocked. These phones are barely still available. Get one before they are gone. Even the 32 GB Pixel XL (1st gen) is almost double this price ($670) and they will be relegated to the aftermarket before Xmas comes.

Should I take a gamble and buy the Amazon version and hope bootloader gets unlocked?

On the verge of getting a new phone. I can deal with 2GB of ram if the cost of a phone is 180, and maybe even 240 for the 4gb version. Once I get up to spending 230 for 2gb and 300 for 4gb, I think there are better phones that arent too far away in terms of cost.
Does this phone look like its getting the bootloader of the prime version unlocked? Im on the fence on which one to order, or if I should just spend more and get either the OP5 for $480 or the S8 for 525 with a trade in. Ive heard rumors, but not too sure if they were true.
It's all personal choice. It may be unlocked tomorrow, it may never be unlocked....

If you are in the US you could try what someone else did in another thread and go to your local Best Buy and try to do a price match. I'm kicking myself for not thinking of it myself. Otherwise I'd stick to non-Amazon. The price difference is not worth the hassle.
I've not seen a 'hack' here that unlocks the normal bootloader; afaik everyone has to get the code from Motorola. So it's very unlikely you'll see a hack that unlocks the Amazon phones. Just my amateur opinion though.
So the Amazon version bootloaders can be unlocked with Motorola codes? -- I read "no" elsewhere. Of no, Amazon is as bad as Verizon.
I want a $200-300 good phone I can root and play with custom Roms that everything works on Verizon and it seems the G family phones do this best from what I can tell. I have no issues voiding a warranty on $200-300 which is less than half the cost of a flagship device which cost so much for features and technology I neither use nor can notice. I'm pretty much done with overpriced flagships. any opinions on best non-flagship Verizon phone with unlockable bootloader? (nexus 6p is a bit too old of a device for me).

So technically both the Amazon and non-Amazon version come locked. The difference is that with the non-Amazon version, you can get the unlock code directly from Motorola's site. The Amazon ones could technically be unlocked if Motorola provided the unlock code, but as per their agreement with Amazon, they will not.
It is possible that this will change in the future (likely not until the next version comes out), but I wouldn't really bet on it. What is still unclear is whether getting the Amazon version and then paying to have the ads removed will ever allow you to unlock the bootloader. Currently I don't believe it will, but in reality all Amazon would have to do is provide the IDs to Motorola of which phones had paid for this service. I don't see Amazon in a rush to do this though.

I don't understand why everyone thinks unlocking bootloader automatically voids the warranty...
Motorola will honor any hardware defect, despite an unlocked bootloader. Anything software related it's not covered after an unlock.
1. This is a law
2. Motorola has stated this.
3. Google search shows previous devices were still fixed or replaced, due to 1. and 2.

Probably because it is all over the interwebz that rooting and unlocking BL triggers tamper flags and voids the warranty with most manufacturers, or perhaps maybe people are concerned about the software somehow affecting the warranty if they send it back to Moto as bricked or with some half-baked ROM on it. Because you know, many folks go and root but don't know how to unroot or reset tamper flags, so they become confused or worried about warranty status on their $700 - $1000 device. LOL, I don't know what the big deal is either..... but anyway, on a sub-$300 mid-range phone I'm not buying it for the warranty.
For anyone landing here with the Amazon Ads inquiry... there exists a thread on how to remove amazon ads with varying results and conditions - knock yourself out.
For Black Friday 2017 - the Moto website had 64/4 version for $225 and then Moto direct and Target had the 32/2 version at $169 which was cheaper than amazon version. I jumped on the 64/4 direct from Moto $225.
Yeah, it took me a few months to pull the trigger, but I am glad I was patient. The G5+ IPS is good enough, and I never used NFC anyway, and once I saw 64bit ROMS working on G5+ and then at this price, it was a no-brainer for me.

1. This depends where you live... the only place I know of that has this "law" is the EU
2. Only for areas where the law requires it, otherwise look at: Legal Terms for bootloader unlocking on Moto's global support site, it is quite clear and unmistakable that just obtaining a lock code, even if never used, voids the warranty for the entire device, hardware and software.
3. Again, see #1
(EDIT: Sorry, I see someone else dug up this old thread after I posted this... Sorry, wasn't trying to rehash an old subject)

I'm ready to make the move to Oneplus

I've been a diehard Samsung guy all the way back to the S5. I'm on the note 8 now and my wife is on the S9+. I prefer to have my device rooted but Samsung /Verizon has made it increasingly difficult with each new generation of phone.
I've noticed since I am on the Verizon network, there are not many choices to switch to that you are able to unlock the bootloader. Verizon wants to keep them all locked up tight.
In my research I have discovered that the 6T may offer me a way out. I also understand that it's not without it's share of problems. I've noticed many posts with people saying their texts do not work correctly. Many others said they had to call Verizon and tell them the 6t is not a CDMA phone and one member said Verizon would not activate his CDMA-less 6t.
I think I may still be willing to give it a try but one thing I noticed when I do a search for a Oneplus 6t on Amazon, every listing says NOT COMPATIBLE with Verizon. I think they are only saying that because the 6t does not have CDMA capability but it does have LTE and because of that it should be compatible. Am I correct?
I do not want to buy it if I can't use it on Verizon.
I just got my Oneplus 6T last Thursday. It is a tiny bit finicky about getting the drivers to keep working for unlocking, rooting, and flashing, otherwise once I had it set up, to activate it on VZW, I just had to log into my account and make the required CDMA-less choice online and BOOM, it just works.

I bought it straight from oneplus online. It's the non TMobile dual SIM. Took maybe two days.
My Nexus 6 still works, but it's time and I'm happy.

I'm on Verizon contract. I had no issue with getting my 6T on my line switched to cdma-less. Also buy it from OnePlus directly you can buy a warranty replacement plan witch Verizon will not cover cause they don't sell the device. I came from the unlocked Google Pixel 2 XL. I will never buy a phone from Big Red again. Unlocked and free is the way to BE???.

Thank you guys. I agree with you both. I'm so tired of being under their thumb. I like having control of my phone and what's on it.
If I weren't a truck driver I would have already left Verizon long ago and tried to find a cellular service provider that gives me more freedom, but I travel to a LOT of backwoods places where, if I didn't have Verizon, I would have no signal.
Actually, being able to buy unlocked devices that work on Verizon is the ultimate freedom. The best phone on the best network.

The Chinese version will not work.
The international version is the version that work. Buy directly from OnePlus to make sure it't the right version.
I'm using my 6T on Verizon with no issues.
Good point teddyearp, Verizon is the best network and that together with an unlocked phone is the ultimate in freedom.
Thank you tech head, I will be sure to get the international version straight from oneplus.
I did a lot of searching before deciding on the 6t. Am I right that the 6t is the only new phone that you can purchase in the US that is unlocked or can be unlocked and that is compatible with Verizon?

There is also the Google pixel line from Google also. Like I said I came from a pixel 2 XL and I can honestly say since I got my 6t I haven't looked back at my pixel. Way more BANG for my buck. I could have purchased two of the high-end 6Ts (8gb ram and 256gb storage) like I have for the price of one pixel 2 XL. I paid almost $1,200 including warranty with that for a unlocked 128gb Pixel 2 XL. Now for my OnePlus I paid $629 plus a extra $150 for a 2 year warranty. I baby my devices but accidents do happen. Even though I never had one but just in case cause it's better safe then sorry. You won't regret your OnePlus I've been reading about these flagship killers for a few years and been waiting for them to be compatible with Verizon. The long wait is over.
Oh yes that's right. The pixel phones. My son, who is away at college loves his pixel and as hard as it may be to believe, even though I've always used android phones (android being from google), I am extremely anti google and would not buy a pixel. I like apple even less so I use android but I don't use chrome. One of the things I always try to accomplish when I get each new device, is to root it and remove as much bloatware and all the google stuff I can without breaking it. Plus I like to stop as much of the telemetry as I possibly can.
I really appreciate the fact that the oneplus has a much lower price and yet is still powerful. Yes the long wait is over
I can't wait to get my very own flagship killer!
bought my 6t one month ago to replace a pixel 3 xl. i do not regret it one bit. the 6t just feels better in the hand to me. popped the sim out of the pixel and into the 6t and instant working except for MMS and i got on the verizon website and did the chat (couldn't find the link myself for CDMA-less texting) and it worked within minutes. zero issues so far. (sorry for the run-on sentence)

one plus 6t refub tmobel safe to buy & unlock bootloader?

I think I really want the oneplus 6t I see there is a problem in unlocking the boot loader
I dont care about the sim lock as im using tmobel all ready.
I do see some guides as a work around. I really want to unlock the boot loader as soon as I get the phone.
Any problems with my idea? (yes I did search before asking better to be on the safe side. I just returned a google pixel because I figured the boot loader could be unlocked)
I see amazon is around 265$ us ebay and swappa about $240.
amazon is much easier to return if its a bad esn or any thing like that. Any other idea were I may get it for cheaper than 250$ ish?
or is that just the going rate. I know black Friday is a few weeks away.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post
Its very safe, just buy, convert, unlock bootloader and enjoy. Am Currently using one?
Can't you just buy an unlocked one on Swappa?
Sent from my ONEPLUS A6013 using Tapatalk
Easy as it gets
I have the TMobile OnePlus 6t. Called the TMobile Twitter support team and they unlocked it the very same day I bought it. Got my info I needed and 2 hours later I was unlocked and converted to international with root and twrp.

If it is from Google it should be posible and straight foward.
Though, if you bouht it and can't unlocked you should consider looking this thread as we got our hands on the MBN files of Pixel 4 which allow us to unlock any bootloader

Well I am not so sure. This was the first time I bought a locked phone, so I can't really tell you. All I can say is that on that thread we created a way to unlock the bootloader, that's all.
Though Pixel 5 wasn't a good phone, it had worse performance, bad sound quality and so on.
Pixel 3 is getting old, won't recive android 13 and 4 GB of RAM for Android isn't enought, it won't keep apps open in the background.
Keep this in mind if you are buying one of those phones

I understand,I don't care about Android 12 and probably above and I think Pixel 5 is awesome phone but from reading through the comments I thought that you find a way to unlock the phone to work with all phone cell companies not the bootloader that's what I got from reading.
So your method will unlock the bootloader on a Verizon Pixel 3 with bootloader lock and unlock it, because I have one I was about to send back, but no need if bootloader can be unlocked.

Well I can't guarantee to you that, what I can say is that a figure out a method that COULD unlock permantly the bootloaader.
I am confident to the point I bought a locked ATT Pixel 4 XL from ebay on mid year, but didn't unlock it yet, just manage to unlock the SIM, so I can use mi Vodafone SIM and VIVO SIM.
I am going to leave a link to that thread here, but it needs to be tested and I can't do it because I don't have more phones to test, so I am waiting to see if someone with an older phone can.
If you want to try it and save some cash it's up to you!
Let me know what you decide,
Happy Christmas!!!
