I cracked my Galaxy S8 screen - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Yesterday, I was sitting on my chair, playing the Nintendo Switch on the TV, with the S8 on my lap as I accessed a guide for the game, when it slipped off and fell onto the floor, and it developed a single crack across the lower half, beginning two thirds down the left side and crossing over to the bottom-right corner. It's a very minor crack, and 80% of the time I can't see it, but it's still distracting enough. Should I go and get it replaced? I have insurance that lets me get a 75% discount on the first repair I do in the first year of the phone's life from a pre-order bonus, but I'm thinking that since the screen is around $250-270 (is it? If anyone's managed to get it replaced officially for cheaper do let me know down below), that's still a pretty high price (given that $60-70 is what it costs to replace most "normal" Quad HD displays).

Well I had mine replaced a few weeks ago, it cost about $370, it's not only the screen that gets replaced, it's also the battery and the display as they are all attached, plus since your screen is cracked, the phone is no longer waterproof and voids the warranty (that's what I was told by Samsung Customer service and the repair center)

I'm fairly sure the water resistance isn't affected, at least it wasn't the case on my S7. Had it opened up to replace some stuff, and they sealed it up afterward (and even did a water dunk test to confirm it), so I'm hoping it holds true here as well.

Battery is not attached according to JerryRigEverything video on YouTube. He completely disassemble this phone The battery is only glued and may be glued again after replacing a screen.

That's good to hear.
Now maybe I should ask if they can get a black rear plate for me as well and get me the Galaxy S8 I've always wanted: black on black with gold frame?

The screen's back is attached to a few circuit boards which brings the cost for the repair almost half the cost of the phone (Over $350. dollars in the US)
The problem is a manufacturer defect and the screen will likely break again - thus the reason for so many breaks within the first 3 months of purchase. Samsungs disregard for this second major cell phone problem, now with their S8+ is disgraceful!

I'm in Australia and had my screen replaced by Samsung and was only charged $220 (AUD). Interesting that it varies so much based on region. I'm almost certain a cracked screen will result in no water resistance as water would be able to get into the device through the cracks.

They didn't make it undroppable enough

I just had my screen replaced by Samsung in the USA, charge was $205 but it has taken them over a month to get it done ( sent in Oct 5th, tracking says I get it back tomorrow ). Customer service folks have no clue and can not help when you call them about the status of your phone once it's there. maddening to say the least.

FWIW: Best Buy will replace an S8+ screen for $249. S8 is less, of course. And Best Buy is a Samsung factory authorized repair center, so warranty remains intact. Best part is that they will do it while you wait. About 2 hours....

220 Euros Repair for HD2 screen

I apologize with administrators of this site if this topic was
already discussed and if I am using the forum to address a
claim on this phone model. I hope someone form HTC would be
reading this forum so please let me also write this message to them.
Dear HTC,
mostl of us already know, HD2 screen is extremely fragile,
made of tiny glass, and we all have to keep care with it.
I did, I read what happened to other users before of me,
and I always was careful in handling it. Almost I thought it up to
few weeks ago.
Accidents are non predictable and it happened to me that HD2 has fallen from the bed down on the parquet and broke its screen in a hundreds of pieces. As for the other the phone was still working but unusable.
My first though was it is my fault, I had to be more careful, but after a while a really do not understand why a phone should be so fragile. It was really the first fall of the phone and the height was really short (about 30cm)
Why your phone should not have to pass at least a 30cm fall test.
Probably this should have been a condition to prevent selling phones to unacquainted customers. But this is not the case for HD2.
But the incredible thing had still to come, after checking the cost for replacement parts on the web (from 25 to 50 euros) I send the phone to HTC repair and now it is coming back with a bill of 220 Euro.
I have to say that this policy is regrettable, the cost for the repair is more than 1/3 of the cost of the whole device, and about 10 times the cost of
the replacement, event if the cause of rupture is not to be fully charged to the responsibility of the customer.
Unfortunately I had a responsibility on this phone against my company and I had to pay the repair at any cost, but for no reason I should have done it if I was the proprietary of the phone.
I had tenths of mobiles before, and really this is the only one who broke at its first fall.
I am writing this message not only to claim about this unfair repair policy that is demonstrated by the overcharge applied from the assistance, but also to warn all those users like me that use this phone as a means of work and choose their phones on the technical specifications and rely to the quality of the producer.
I am surprised from HTC since I already had three mode HTC devices before of this, and neither experienced this fragility in their previous models. But, this was not the case for HD2. Its robustness do not respect even a poor standard.
Finally I wish to warn other forum users about the cost actually applied for repair.
Best Regards
C.Alberto
I'm sorry that your screen broke and the repair was so expensive , but from first hand experience I can tell you the phone isn't as fragile as you describe it.A week back a friend of mine was playing ShootMe(game where you use accelerometer to simulate different guns) and the phone slipped off his hand(around 1m height) and slided for around half a meter on a parquet floor.I rushed to pick it up , ready to shed some manly tears for my 1 week old phone , but when I picked it up there was nothing except some dust(I had invisible shield so that probably saved it from scratching).Needless to say after that incident I got a pouch .Anyway , I'm not saying it is not fragile , it is ,just not to the extend you are describing or maybe I was lucky?
I can't imagine an HD2 suffering any damage falling 30cm onto a wood floor. I dropped mine recently over a meter onto the pavement, resulting in only small marks in the plastic.
Depends
I guess it strongly depends on the angle of impact with the floor, it it goes down with the back then could be ok, but if, such as in my case it impact from one edge, it does not match the height, the display will break.
I can clearly see on my display the the point of impact along the edge from where the break started, and I repeat in that case it was only 30 cm high.
I guess you have been really lucky in your episode, since mine was the first fall first break actually I experienced 100% fragility.
I had read alot of similar happenings before thinking I was alone and decide to write.
sending it back
... and actually I am seriuosly thinking to send it back, I have a work always on the go, and this is a risk too high in case of continuous travels.
Insurance
I bought mine unlocked, paid alot. Ins. was 85.00 for 2 yrs against water, screen, pretty much everything. I have dropped mine twice from 1m,no damage. I do have it in piel frama Imagnum case. Both times it landed on corner. Sorry for your lose,,,Quig
In Portugal I Payed Last week 167€ for Screen and Lcd repair...

Last night the same thing happened like it happened to OP, my hd2 felt from my bed into the wooden floor. I was ready to cry after it felt but for my surprise it wasn't even scratched at all. While taking it out of under bed it got some little scratches on the screen protector but no scratch on the phone itself or any other visible damage.
I will agree with OP here, it all depends on the angle of the fall.
Mine fallen from approx 1.5m onto concrete tiles. Case in the corner got scratched, but the display/touchscreen survived it. It was 30cms only indeed? Amazing

Did you had also the LCD repaired for that price?
The price for reparation of mine was only the capacitive Glass cover

[Q] help replacing glass!

argh! Well THAT didn't take long. My S4 fell about 14" onto the floor and the glass shattered the day I got it. Putting aside for the moment how disappointed I am that the phone failed the most basic of drop tests (I've dropped every smartphone I've ever owned multiple times from greater heights and this is the first one that broke...and so easily).
I decided to attempt to repair the glass so I ordered a replacement glass kit and went for it. The repair itself was fairly straightforward and pretty much just like the S3.
After getting the whole thing back together I noticed that when I do a screen wipe to remove fingerprints (applying a bit of pressure to the screen) I get a bubble in the center of the screen...like it's sticking to the digitizer/LCD screen below. The kit came with a small suction cup which I can use to pull the glass away from the digitizer and the bubble goes away. It seems to have gotten better from yesterday to today - it no longer sticks during normal use, only during heavy wiping.
So...can anyone give me some direction here? Will it just dry out and take care of itself? Should I take the screen off and clean the LCD again? Should I try using several layers of adhesive to increase the gap between the glass and LCD/digitizer?
Honestly I'd call the company and ask them...this shouldn't be happening and if it were me, I'd get a replacement. Then again I always carry insurance. Best buy is free screen replacement.

I got my phone from Sprint...the insurance has a 30-day grace period before it goes into effect and a $200 deductible for broken screens. I cancelled it.
The guy said he'd be more than happy to send me another screen...I just want to make sure it's not something I did. This screen is OEM, but of course there is no glue between the LCD and glass after the replacement.
I didn't know there was a 30day grace for replacements. This must be new. I've had my phone replaced before 30 days after I bought a phone before. And screen insurance replacements are $100. Just did one not to long ago. This is why I only by from Best buy now. I make them price match Sprint.com and then buy insurance through them at the discounted rate if you pay up front. No deductible on anything and only thing they don't insure is lost or stolen.
But back to the original problem... If the suction cup tool doesn't fix it then you can try to clean it off and redo it again before send it back for another one. Just not sure why its sticking like that.
Here is one option, but this is why I buy my phones from Best Buy and get their Geek Squad protection.Unlimited replacements and no deductible. I had to replace my screen when I had my S3 a month ago through Sprints insurance Assurion and it cost $150. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPXVnTlrqeo

Which replacement screen/digitizer/housing??

So last week, I accidentally dropped my naked note 3 about 1.5 feet to a concrete sidewalk. Very little visible damage on the outside, but sadly, over the span of about 24hrs, the screen slowly faded to black (starting from the bottom left, where the most ammount of damage is visible, across the screen in a circular pattern), and now the screen appears to be completely dead. During the time in which the screen went black, the digitizer still worked, as I could still get the phone to register spen clicks on even the black areas of the screen (i.e. i could still get air command to pop up). There is also zero damage to the glass itself. No scratches, skuffs, or marks of any type. Looks brand new.
So I'm currently in the market for a replacement screen/digitizer/housing assembly, should the repair centre quote me more than $275 + taxes to fix.
I'm going with a complete housing, because while I'm sure its simply the LCD screen portion that's no longer working, those in themselves cost upwards of $250. And it would require me to seperate the glass from the housing/digitizer, and then reseal them with the new one. I figured it would be much more cost effective to simply buy the whole package pre-assembled for $25 more.
Problem is, you can get different housing part numbers depending on which version of the phone you have (verizon, at&t). So my question is this:
Will it matter if I purchase the cheapest version? As an example, the AT&T black housing is 275, but the Verizon Black housing is 289. The last thing i want to do is fork over the money and find I ordered the wrong part.
I'm from Canada, and sadly our carriers are never recognized in these bloody situations. I'm with Bell, and I'm 'fairly' certain its identical to AT&T, but I wanted peoples opinions from here, as you are by far the most knowledgable about parts/hardware etc.
I'm SO choked at myself for being careless. My phone seemed to be flawless, and didn't exhibit any of the faults other people complained about (screen discoloration, all the functions like multi-window, one-handed operation, etc. not working). And now I've gone and forced open heart surgery on the thing.
I was looking here for the part:
http://www.etradesupply.com/samsung.html
As you can see, they have multiple models listed, and I just need to know if I'm selecting the right one.
(I also think that AT&T is my best choice, because after opening up the phone down to the motherboard and other parts, AT&T is printed all over the place. But I could be reading more into that than I should).

Because there is physical damage to the device? This voids most types of warranties, outside of some carrier warranties (it would actually void bell's, after reading over the fine print).
I basically have to fund the repairs myself, unless I sent it to the repair center, and they miraculously came back saying the damage didn't cause the problem, and it was just a defective screen. But the chance of THAT happening are pretty much nil.

My experience with G3 screen repair

If you've broken the screen on your week-old G3 (new rescue pup thought my TPU-covered G3 was a chew toy) and wondered whether to (a) try to fix it yourself with parts off the Internet, (b) take it to a local shop, or (c) ship it to LG for a "warranty" repair, here's my experience with the process.
There's nothing out there showing how to fix the G3 screen other than one shop's teardown that claims it's easy to fix G3 hardware issues (nothing about the screen though). Parts are posted all over the Internet and eBay, but they're all generic-looking stuff and who knows if the digitizer glass is really GG3. Prices of parts ranging $140 to $200, and I need both the digitizer glass and the LCD, maybe a front frame because it has a couple of small dings from the dog's teeth. Already dreading the price quotes from shops, since the QHD LCD must be more expensive than anything out there, and it's fairly new. Figuring that it will cost hundreds of dollars no matter who I have repair it, since that's what some shops quote for newer smartphones and tablets like the Galaxy S5 and Note 3, I decided to ship my G3 to LG so I wouldn't void what warranty I had left.
LG received the phone 7/28/14. The next day, they email me a diagnosis and repair quote since it's not covered by warranty (duh!).
It will cost $146 to repair, $153 to fully refurbish. Pretty much justifies not getting the insurance policy. YMMV, from what I read in the G2 forum about LG factory service (the parts/repair prices may vary depending on availability and demand).
So if you drop and break the screen of your precious new G3, then don't worry about how much it will cost to repair this relatively new device, if you are not too concerned about turnaround time.

The issue is that your phone loses approximately $5/day in value everyday. So even bigger loss each day its out of your hands ... So insurance isn't that bad! I really think with the life cycles of cell phones the G3 will be on craigslist for $250 in a few months !
Hey All,
My two bits...I dropped my G3 4 days in and destroyed the screen. As you can imagine I was pretty upset and concerned that I had just wasted $800 and had no clue what to do. I ended up finding a retailer online that sold the Oem screen, digitizer and casing for what ended up to be just over $200. With a little help from the disassembly video I tried to do myself. I am happy to report that it was unbelievably easy to complete the repair and I have a 100% working phone again. As the video shows you remove 13 screws, remove the two pieces of the backing and pull out the mother board. The only thing you need to do then it gently remove the vibrator, camera..front and rear, speaker, head phone jack and little daughter board. These are all stuck with two sided tape and just require a little light prying to remove. The replacement unit even had the two sided tape pre installed and you only had to remove the little plastic tabs that covered the sticky tape and then place each part in its corresponding place. I reassembled the phone and voila...a brand new working G3. The nice thing is the replacement was the case as well so the dings and dents from the drop on the case were all gone as well. So if you do the same don't be afraid to save the labour and do it yourself

Reading this made me look up just what's so great about Corning's various hardened glass, and I've realised it's much more to do with being scratch-resistant than actually shatter proof. Funny how easily marketing will leave you stuck with the wrong (inflated) idea ... and, sure, scratch resistance is nice, but then that's why you buy a nice cheap case for your phone rather than put it in your pocket together with your keys.

LG G3 repair
The G3 is ten times easier to repair than the G2. The back comes right off like any other normal android phone. Remove the screws that you see holding the back on the midframe/bezel. remove the top half using a safety pry tool and do the same with the bottom half. Disconnect the two ribbon connections at bottom near charging port. Take out battery if you haven't already. Heat the back using heat gun or hairdryer. Heat front of assembly using the same heat gun or hairdryer. There are no other ribbons or connections to worry about at this point. Using iSesamo bar or other prying tool remove the broken assembly. (Note: There is no adhesive holding the LCD to the midframe so the removal is very easy.) Just pry around the top and sides of the phone and pull up at top then slide old LCD assembly out. Be sure to use a good 3M adeesive when putting in the new assembly. Connect the ribbons back to the board, close phone, power the phone on and enjoy. The whole process should take no more than half an hour if you ever done any previous repairs to another phone. Hit thanks if this helps

Hey I am trying to do the same thing you did.
My question is how hard was removing the daughter board? What tool and technique you used?
I can't find a video or tutorial where they remove the little daughter board and wanted to know how hard it is to remove before ordering parts.
It really was very easy, much easier than I expected. The daughter board was also pretty easy and I think I ended up using my finger and a guitar pick but anything small will suffice. The two sides sticky is really not that strong so just have patience when pulling those pieces out as they do come off pretty easy, Just use caution, you will be fine.

I bought an lg g3 d850 digitizer+lcd combo and a precut adhesive sticker for the model. Howwever, I am not sure how to apply the adhesive because there is less than 1 mm of room on the sides. What is the best approach for me to apply the pre -cut adhesive. Here is the link to the adhesive that I am talking about.
Will LG still repair your LG G3 even if you tried repairing it yourself? I tried ordering a new screen and putting it in myself but that didn't work so the lg g3 has been opened which voids warranty.
My wife's G3 developed this weird mark on the screen (always visible when the screen is on), and she claims to have never done anything like drop it in the tub or toilet... but it appears to be water damage to me. (See pic attached)
I put it in rice for a few weeks, and it's not going away... so I'm ready to try to fix it. Has anyone seen anything like this? Since the glass is still in good shape (it wasn't dropped or cracked)... what do I need to order to fix it?
I had the same concerns as the OP... buying a replacement LCD panel from Amazon or eBay, I wasn't sure if I'd get a full-res OEM replacement or a cheap knock-off. Can anyone point me to a reliable reseller (preferably on Amazon for several reasons) that would have the right parts to fix her phone up?
Thanks
The crack you see is in a tempered glass screen protector... not the screen itself.
Hai guys,
I have broken my glass on g3, display works fine but shuttered portion of screen is not fully functional, please can someone point me to reliable reseller, preferable on eBay, cos don't want to trash my money on knock-offs, I wanna real deal 100% OEM original display. So I need you guys from personal experience to point me in the right direction. Thx in advance!

Spontaneous hairline crack

Hi,
I just woke up the other day after one week of usage, and the phone appeared with a hairline crack out of the blue, no misuse, no mishandling, babied, in protector since day one.
I bought the phone for full price on ebay, with a 30 day warranty.
I've asked for an exchange, but ebay says they cannot allow a return because it is not in the same condition as when received. Of course it is not, but I believe this to be a manufacturing defect. The crack IS the reason why I am asking for it to be exchanged, it should not be the reason for not authorizing the replacement.
Have you guys had any luck with this type of spontaneous cracks? I understand this is an issue even with gorilla glass, it happens sometimes.
How about your luck on ebay? The seller is a 45,000 reviews, 99.9% seller, never answered, only ebay said the seller asked them to intervene and then ebay said the seller said the item was no longer in the original condition and for such reason it cannot be returned (I do not want a return, but exchage/replacement).
The pictures here are the ones sent to the seller on ebay, no damage other than the crack, no screen splattering, just a single, clean crack.
Please help!!!

Explain situation.
They seem to have some issue with the grade 7000 aluminum that they are using in the note 5/s6 edge+. There were another user that had his whole back cracked. Seem to be expanding and shrinking with heat/cold. A lot of phones have some rubber between the screen and the metal but these phones does not.

GTAPIAS,
Hi, it looks like maybe the phone fell down at night or something. From your pics, it shows the paint/finish on the aluminium bezel being scuffed from the place where the crack starts. You can see the internal silver aluminium finish. Are you sure you haven't dropped the phone? I don't think any one woud cover this except insurance.
It also seems the bezel and screen gap has increased near the volume rocker area which could happen if the phone fell down and the aluminium bezel got pressed in, thus cracking the glass.
Thanks avetny,
I'll give it a try and keep you all posted.
cknorthpole, hopefully the word gets out and they take care of us, its customers.

Thanks insane devil,
What appears to be the aluminum being scuffed is actually my reflection while taking the picture on the pristine, blemish free shiny bevel on the aluminum edge. As for the apparent increased gap, I can only say I can see Samsung's tolerances still not being perfect, but it is slightly wider than the rest of the phone. Simply magnified by the close up pictures.
This was a under one week old phone. I still believe or blame a manufacturing issue, whether Samsung or Corning, who knows, but hopefully they'll own up to it.
I had a samsung s6 edge plus 3 weeks old do the exact same thing because of this forum proving my case it wasnt an isolated incident. I put my phone on charge while it was in my hand because i was using the internet at the same time, with in 5 minutes of it being on charge i heard the phone make a little click sound look down at the screen and there was a crack from the lock button all the way to the other side of the screen also one from where the first crack ended all the way up and around the edge screen past the volume keys...samsung wont cover it under warranty but optus waived the insurance fee and are replacing it with a refurbished phone and paying my next bill for the stuff around..as fixing this phone is pointless because the problem is in the battery so next time it gets hot it will just crack the new screen. Hopefully samsung get there next phone right.
