Camera capabilities on custom Rom - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

Pardon me if it's a noob question
Just wanted to know that whether camera capabilities like the potrait mode and other tweaks will be affected when running a custom rom?
If so, what differences could one expect?

Not completely sure. But from what I understand so far. If it is a stock based, custom ROM, then stock camera app is there to function same as always.
But for non stock ROMs (Lineage, Resurrection Remix, AOSP), it seems camera functionally will be significantly reduced (OnePlus aren't delivering camera blobs by the sounds of things). And because of that, not sure what community is able to do in that regard

Google releases Nexus camera drivers for DEVs?

Hey guys! For the first time I am having a device Nexus and I am very happy. But I would like to test new ROMs customized. in my devices previous (non-Nexus) whenever opted for any ROM AOSP or CM based, the camera had lower quality compared to the stock, because the manufacturers not release their drivers owners for parallel development. Thus, always have CM drivers generic in the camera and other parts of the device.
I wonde then, if we Nexus happens otherwise. Google provides these codes for developers? I will lose quality in photographs case use another ROM AOSP based?
Grateful for the replies!
There isn't a custom ROM that will degrade your photo quality on the 6p.

Indeed: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/drivers
Additionally, the blobs/drivers can be easily extracted from a rooted device/the factory images. So all in all, no, you do not have to worry about any issues with the camera or any other hardware with custom ROMs (aside from Bluetooth with CM based ROMs).

Look and Feel of Cyanogen/ AOSPA based ROMs compared to Stock ROMs...

Hi All,
I have flashed a lot of ROMs on my OnePlus X, but every-time I decide either to go back to the stock Oxygen OS or OEM based ROMs such as Flyme/ H2OS or Color OS.
The reason behind is every-time I flash Cyanogen/ AOSPA based ROMs, it doesn't feels as Solid as the stock ROM, looks like something is missing (the UI doesn't feels polished, the colors don't seem punchy).
Everything is cool with Cyanogen/ AOSPA like battery usage, smoothness, customisation etc., but the feel which the stock/ OEM based ROMs have is missing from these ROMs.
You may have observed the differences between the two.
It can be my feeling only, but I wanted opinion from you guys about this.
I'm using OxygenOS 2.2.1-X with Android N-ify and PerfectColorBar Xposed modules.
Thanks in advance.
I think what you are experiencing is a placebo effect that stock is more refined than CM and AOSPA. Regardless of whether this is true or not, I believe that for you it is a placebo effect because if you really do think CM and AOSPA have an unmatured UI, then you should not be using PerfectColorBar because that too has glitches. PerfectColorBar isnt so perfect, in some instances the colour is incorrect. CM and AOSPA are the more refined custom ROMs anyway, which to me seem equally matured in terms of UI as stock. As for some other custom ROMs i do agree they they seem unrefined, such as AICP where the bluetooth share button is coloured in the gallery while the other buttons are in white.
What OP has said is so true, as it is also happens to myself. All this time, I thought it only me that have that feelings.
So, beside the weak LTE signal bug that plagued almost MM ROM for OPX (at least for E1003 in Asia region as confirmed by a lot users already), the half-backed feelings of custom ROM is what makes me always going back to my OOS TWRP backup.

Thanks for your opinion mate but PerfectColorBar is working absolutely perfect for me. I was using FlatStyleColorBar before but that plugin was causing slowness while opening apps, that's why replaced with this one.
Anyways, the placebo effect thing might be true for me
luckily (?!) i only booted oos once to enable usb debugging etc [emoji16]

Well I do agree with OP. You have to realize OOS and H2OS are especially made for oneplus devices. This means full work on this devices. They HAVE to make it look good to sell it hehe.
CM on the other hand is generic for all devices. Also any variant coming from it.
Just with one feature which is tristate key states on H2OS show how specific the ROM was built, on CM I don't use them for nothing at all. On h2os it has a beautiful UI when changing modes, and those modes actually make sense and are useful.
The thing here is OOS is really bad in my opinion. H2os is really really good, but for some reason I keep coming back to AOSPA or Sultans ROM hehe. It's more customizable and has some really handy features.
But with ROMS is all about taste. Each person has a different opinion, so just use the one you like the most and you'll be happy

Yeah, OOS on the OPX feel like a beta test rom. I switched with sultan cm13 three week ago, i'll wait OOS 3.0 but for now i stay on it, it work well enough for a daily use. In fact there are some bugs here and here but it's like nothing compared to OOS 2.2.1-X...

Well, the reason of flashing custom ROMs, mods etc is that you want to take control of your device. You get barebone stock android. You can easily theme, customize icons, fonts etc. Want better sound quality, flash somethings, use greenify with all its feature working etc.
I remember the first time I flashed custom ROM on my note 2, it was kind of shock to me because of so much changes in look, but smoothness was what kept me there. Sometime later, I could not imagine myself going back to TW.
There are some very good ROMs and with proper theming, you can not even tell the difference (except smoothness in Custom ROMs ). Rest is your opinion, if you don't like something, noone can make you .
But the strange thing is, I don't have this kind of weird feelings of half-baked ROM when I flashed Pure Nexus, Cataclysm, or CM variant on my Nexus 5. Even everything seems better than stock ROM from Google.

It may be because Nexus are made to be used with stock android and flashing other custom ROM based on stock android doesn't makes much of a visual difference.

OOS vs Custom ROM

The OPX is my daily driver (for now) and photography is a HUGE part of my life. Most stable custom ROMs do have more features than the stock, but the camera app functionality and interface will never compare to the stock software. The 2 main features I use are slo-mo and manual mode. So why don't I use OOS 2.x.x? Simple, the community build based on marshmallow has massive performance fixes (especially concerning the GPU and gaming). If the camera isn't a big deal for you than go ahead and flash a custom ROM, this will add more features to your device and the cost of a great camera app. But I definitely suggest upgrading to a marshmallow or nougat based ROM (my personal favourites are CM and PA, they have many features and are pretty stable) due to the poor performance of the GPU on OOS 2.X.X.
let me know you opinions on software concerning the OPX below?
whats the point?
Anyway i find sultans HAL combined with snapdragon interface better.

I totally agree and that's why I went for 3.1.1. Smooth performance, best camera by far.

Ok.. So why not do both. Use a custom ROM and flash oos 3 camera zip. So now you have best ROM and best camera app. That is what I do.

I couldn't find the latest camera version for the OPX, could you share the camera zip + the name of the ROM you are using. Thanks?

Thanks for your thoughts and feedback? (camera seems a little buggy tho?)
The problem with the camera isn't the app it's self. It's the photo quality. Sultan hal uses higher iso settings to eliminate low fps during photo capturing, thus creating to much noise in the picture. That's why you can't get best of both. Furthermore that in latest OOS cam the video recording fps is normal now on, there is no need for me to change in any custom rom. ( by the time these lines are written of course, because no one knows what are talented and really hard working custom roms developers will bring us in the future)
Ps: of course I have test for long periods purity, sultan cm13, caf RR, and official cm13 in order to have a reference point.

Yes, I agree. But the interface on OOS is much more user friendly in my opinion than any STABLE custom rom out there. Sultan hal is much more complicated for the “simple everyday OnePlus user". The most noticeable downside between the two is trying to record slo mo on any custom ROM. There would be too much zoom, too much noise and it was hard to make it play in slo mo. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.?

I miss panorama mode from OOS. On custom rom's (sultan cm and sultanized resurection remix i think) not working

Moto camera support?

What's reason behind the Moto camera not working properly on custom ROM as it works on Stock. Can we hope there will a custom ROM in future which will support Moto camera??

In my experience, InvictaOS works with the Moto camera from here https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/themes/stock-camera-t3540473 without requiring any further modifications. I've been able to use video, professional mode and slow motion without issue, and links to Google Photos nicely. Your experience may vary. For point and shoot, the ported HTC camera is very quick too:https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/development/los-aosp-base-temporal-fix-camera-t3574480
As for your other question, I imagine stock apps have had issues running on some custom ROMs because of differences in the backend camera support of the stock ROM with the custom ROM and/or the proprietary software used in the stock. I also imagine for some custom ROMs, getting one camera app to behave properly isn't a high priority compared to security and general fixes/features for the rest of the ROM, especially given the wealth of camera apps on the market.

Tripod camera mode baked into camera app?

I've been looking at this phone as a potential replacement/upgrade to my OnePlus One.
I've been using Cyanogenmod and then LineageOS on my phone for a while now but my concern with this ASUS phone is if it's not popular then there will be no custom ROMs for it.
Main reason I install a custom ROM is to get more life out of a device, like this OnePlus One.
In addition, will we lose the extended functions of the camera as that's the other reason for looking at this phone. If it's in the app and the app could be exported, then a custom ROM should be possible, but I'd hate to lose that functionality by updating to a custom ROM.
