I am currently running Nexus 7 (2012) Wifi Android 4.3 Build JWR66Y rooted with CWM and stick mount but when I try to update Android 4.4 OTA it fails on status 7 system bin debuggered. As I was able to just run the Android 4.3 OTA when I upgraded from Android 4.2.2 without any problems this Android 4.4 update is certainly very frustrating. Since I am still a newbie at this could you please provide a step by step of how to get this to work using NRT? Do you have to unroot before installing the update and then reinstall all your apps after? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
KodachromeBob
I'm in the same boat. Trying not to have to start from scratch so I really prefer to run the update instead of flashing the entire device. Vague recollection was that debuggerd gets replaced by stickmount but I tried reverting to the backup file that I had and it still gave me the same (Status 7) error.
I think we just have to find the correct version of debuggerd and overwrite it, then sideload. Let me know if you make any progress.
If I remember correctly you have to be completely stock. If you changed anything the update will not work.

It's only aborting on that one file as far as I can tell. Would love to get an original copy and just overwrite the one that's on my Nexus 7 to try if it would work.
Is there a way to get back to stock but not lose all the installed apps and data? I don't mind not using the update file, I just do not want to go through the hassle of setting everything back up (reloading apps, wifi, etc.) again.

No, I just recall having to change the debuggerd file to get stickmount to work. I don't remember the details exactly (it was a long time ago) but I'm pretty sure that is all it was.

No worries. I just found another post (sucks that search is down) that says that if we just flash the boot, system, and bootload img files from KK that it should update without deleting programs or data... I think I'll give that a try.
---------- Post added at 02:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:10 PM ----------
Apparently I flashed in the incorrect order and just flashed boot and system. Nexus 7 appears to have booted up and my apps/data are still present. About screen shows
Android: 4.4
Kernel version: 3.1.10-gee1a0b2
Build: KRT16S
Do I still need to flash bootloader?

The method of flashing boot, bootloader, and system img seems to have worked. Might want to give that a shot if no one uploads the proper debuggerd file. Best of luck!

Did you use NRT to accomplish this and would you mind providing the step by step procedure and files that made this successful for you? Being new at this I just don't want to screw it up.

Yes, just download the 4.4 image from google here:
https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/nakasi-krt16s-factory-da7dee49.tgz
Unzip it until you can pull out the 3 image files I mentioned above. Then use NRT to Flash the files one at a time. You should be good to go. (fingers crossed)
Yesterday my nexus downloaded the update and asked me to press 'ok' to shut down tablet and install.
Just like after every system update the following happend:
Nexus turns off
... thats it, it simply turns off and nothing happens! Device is 2 weeks old now and i am thinking of returning it.
I'm on 4.3 and system tells me that there is no update available...
Nexus 7 2013 sucks!

Yes, you have to unzip the .tgz file, then unzip the .tar file to get the folder with the image files. 7zip works great. If you are on the stock rom/kernel rooted with a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) you can fastboot flash on both the system.img and boot.img. Those are the only ones you need. It doesn't look for file verifications in system, it just puts the latest system image there. Flash the latest supersu in custom recovery and you get back root.

Could not have done it without the help of Wayno-san. I flashed Boot, Boot Loader and System images with NRT and voila a successful update to KRT16S. I had to ROOT again and reinstall Busy Box but that was not a problem. Thanks again Wayno--san for all your support.

You're welcome Sir!
Can anyone send me the JWR66Y debuggerd?
I'm also stuck trying to update to 4.4 and I'm hoping to avoid reflashing back to the stock /system. I've reverted all of the system files I touched so it's only debuggerd that's holding up the update. Thanks!

I also had to update manually because of Status 7 update in CWM during OTA flash. Slight inconvenience yes, but nothing major as I didn't flash "Data" via Fastboot command. Had all my apps retained in the next boot
Missing ART though. I don't really want to flash a custom ROM for it.
Anyone willing to send me the KRT16S debuggerd?
If no one has the JWR66Y version, I can just edit the install script to not check (and not patch) debuggerd, then load the KRT16S debuggerd after the update completes. Thanks!

What are you trying to flash? Custom kernel? Stock boot.img?
Either the .img is corrupt/incompletely downloaded OR you have unlocked boot loader using unofficial method.
1. Download the boot.img and try again
2. If it still gives error, you do not have a proper bootloader unlock. Try flashing twrp that is confirmed working by you, to verify if bootloader is properly unlocked or not.

If you had spent enough time searching on xda, you would have got the solution. I posted a solution to this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-2-laser/help/unable-update-to-marshmallow-via-ota-t3389876 And the thread is marked "solved" which means it worked.

Apparently, your current recovery version does not match with your current firmware version. There are two possible workarounds-
1. Wipe system by executing "fastboot erase system" in fastboot mode. Then reflash latest official asus lollipop ROM. This will fix the recovery and firmware mismatch and you will then be able to flash MM via stock recovery.
2. If you are experienced with edit8ng updater-script, Extract all contents of MM ota. Open updater-script and remove all asserts and lines that say "abort". Then compress the contents again. (You can't edit without extracting coz zip is signed). Flash this modified ota zip via TWRP.
If you still can't flash it or you are unable to edit updater-script, pm me, I have downloaded the MM ROM, I will send you modified updater-script.
I can even convert this ota into .imgs so that you can flash directly via fastboot

alright, download the updater-script from attachment. Flash via TWRP.
Detailed instructions-
First extract entire ota zip. Delete the original updater-script.
Then extract "updater-script_modified.zip"
Copy the extracted "updater-script" to extracted ota at the right location. (META-INF/com/google/android)
Compress the ota files as a zip using 7zip or winrar. Compression level "normal" . DONT USE ANY ANDROID APP FOR COMPRESSING, USE WINDOWS/LINUX APP ONLY.
Flash the modified zip via TWRP recovery

I'm new so please forgive me and my ignorance through all of this. I had a great root experience with my old LG G3, so when I got my Axon 7 (A2017U) I thought I'd try to root it too. I tried to follow DrakenFX's guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/wip-axon-7-root-bootloader-unlokced-t3441204) but I bit off more than I could chew. I got to the point where I had TWRP up, but this is where I think things started to fall apart. I was confused by the instructions and in a haste I continued anyway. In TWRP I went to Wipe>Format Data typed in yes like TWRP said and boom, I had no idea what happened. Rebooting only got a screen that said "Type in your password" but my passcode I had on the phone before it bricked didn't work. So by now I start panicking a bit. I thought I made a mistake earlier so I went back and tried to reinstall TWRP by putting the phone into EDL. The phone got stuck that way for a while, but I now I have it in TWRP. Right now, I just want to get back to safe stock android.
I'm 200% sure I messed with something I wasn't supposed to and I believe that is the system image(?)which Draken also linked (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68248798&postcount=53). I'm downloading it as I type. I'm going to do my best to leave my phone just like it is right now, in TWRP, and wait for more advice on this before I do anything else.. What I'm curious about is where did I go wrong and what do I need to do to get my phone working again, preferably without returning it? Thank you for any advice you have to offer.
Update: It's worth noting I didn't know to enable OEM Unlocking when I was in stock android. Dumb move I know. I'm new here.

I've done the wipes multiple times. It's mostly the downloads I'm having trouble with. How and where do you get them? The links I found were dead or had a slow speed.

Did you save the recovery backup? If you did then use the axon7root.exe to flash the stock recovery. Then download the stock B20 from ZTE.

I've been able to find some recovery images that I found on other threads. The thing is, when I try to flash them on TWRP, I get an error about "/dev/block/sde14" being read-only.

no no no no ..................... put phone in EDL mode. Copy the stock image into the folder with the axon7root.exe file you used to flash TWRP. Make sure the stock file is named recovery.img (or whatever the TWRP file is named in that folder, it has been a long time since I did this). Then use the axon7root.exe program the exact same way you did before. It will flash the stock recovery. Then in stock recovery you can flash the B20 from ZTE

Ok, I will try this.
Update: I got the stock recovery back, but now I'm lost as to how to flash the stock b20 from zte. Thank you for all your help so far though.

Yes, I'm in the process of getting the update from sdcard feature working.
Update: Trying to use the update.zip file or unpacking it into the sdcard hasn't worked. Trying to use adb sideload returns "Cannot read 'update.zip'"

ok - download it from zte. Put it on your SD card. In recovery select update from SD card. Be warned it will work but it is slow. Also note that while I will not say the bootloader unlock doesn't work on B29, I can say it worked flawlessly on B20. If you want unlocked I recommend doing so on B20.

I tried that. It won't accept the zip file and it's unclear which file to sideload. Would you happen to know? This is what files are in the unpacked zip. https://gyazo.com/c7546c3ed0dcb0972653eaeba42fcb40

Maybe - I'd have to download it to find out. If you can't get stock recovery to take it this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69434328&postcount=17 gives you instructions on what lines to remove from the updater-script to make it flash in TWRP (I didn't have a problem making the stock B20 go in stock recovery, but I was unlocked at the time). You could reflash TWRP and try that.
Or just try this in TWRP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68873482&postcount=2

I'm going to try the first option. The second option's link take horrendously long to download.
Update: Trying to flash from TWRP results in error "Could not find 'META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary' which makes no sense since update binary is exactly where it should be.
Further Update: It seems that the problem might have been that when I compressed "update.zip" to fix "updater-script" it changed to file path by adding the title of the folder "update" to the beginning. I think that messed with the path giving the the meta-inf error.

Just suck it up and download the 2 b29 files. If it is that slow pick a different mirror
hi all
im running rooted stock rom, and received the security update, but when im trying to install , phone boots to twrp.
now phone keeps rebooting ' how do i stop this?
is there a way i can install it via twrp, or only when a zip file will come up, i will be able to update?
thx in advance for helping
I'm in the same boat. I knew not to let it. My wife had my phone and thought she was helping. It's looking for the stock release keys. It generates a log file in /system/tmp
From what I can recall, stock recovery has to be reflashed. I just need to kill the forced reboot so I can use the phone temporarily.
I was stupid enough not to backup before trying to update..
Is there a way to flash this thing?
Use TWRP to wipe cache. That will delete the OTA file and break the bootloop.

Yeah, go back to stock...
OTA updates are only for a pure stock device... No TWRP, no root, no Xposed, nothing, must be ABSOLUTELY stock or it will/can fail.

Yes, exactly... And I would also recommend disabling the notification in system app Motorola Update Services so you are no longer nagged about the update.

thanks for the help
i went the systemless root method, thinking i would be able to update via ota's, guess not. however, clearing the cache did stop the reboot loop, thanks!
