I just recently bought the Huawei P8 and updated to Marshmallow via the update program. however, im not sure what i should think about it, but i tend to dislike it. do you guys know whether marshmallow has some remarking advantages compared to lollipop, which make it worth to keep? i read on some other threads that some users experience a faster decline of the battery and a worse camera. anyone here who can relate with personal experience?

Marshmallow brings 'Pro' features to the camera - I rather have this than go back to Lollipop for the sake of a little extra battery life (not that I noticed much difference with this, or any camera-related issues). See my post in this thread: P8 camera metering mode question

So, as the title suggests, i'm looking for the best custom rom for P9 lite, as close to stock as possible!
I love this phone's hardware, its the software thats killing me! No multitasking capabilities whatsover on my 2gb variant. An 1.5gb samsung, debloated, does much much better. In the Huawei p9 lite,, i open one app, another one is killed in the background.
All settings about battery protection are off, yet apps still are killed.
So, i'd like some recommendations. I'm running EMUI 5.0 -380 version. After factory reset everything is perfect, except multitasking.
What i want most, is Dual sim to be working as i carry a work sim and a personal one. Everything else i prefer to be semi-stable.
Your suggestions?
I've been patiently waiting for the official Oreo rom, but now that we have the soak test and it's still 32-bit (I guess I shouldn't have been surprised, yet I am), I'm ready to throw in the towel and go custom. The 64-bit roms seem to get better benchmark scores as well as compatibility with newer editions of google camera (although Savitar's 32-bit Gcams are pretty solid and support RAW). But there are SO MANY rom options, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.
I've seen a lot of people recommend Pixel Experience, but after reading up on it I'm not so sure its the right choice for me. I've heard the most recent August update hurt battery life, and there's been some funny business about how Google Photos works- apparently it is the app from the Pixel which supports uploading full quality images that don't use your Google Drive storage space... except that since they aren't coming from an actual Pixel, they DO use storage space. And the regular option to just upload unlimited compressed photos is gone from the settings. This is a problem for me as some of the gcams I play with take rather large photos, and I'm always pretty close to the limit of my Google Drive space.
Also, I've heard the lead dev maintaining that ROM has moved on to another phone, so I'm wary of future updates and if current bugs will be addressed.
I'm not looking for bleeding edge or bells and whistles. Like I said, if Moto had put out a stock 64-bit Oreo rom by now I'd stick with that. I need the moto actions to work (particularly the chop flash light. Freaking most useful thing I've ever had in a phone. EVER), as well as the fingerprint reader. I've been trying many roms over the last 48 hours and have come out with some first impressions that may help you. The first rom I tried was resurrection remix, a mod a user made of the official one (downloaded it by accident and thought it was official, upon reading up on it the only difference seems to me armanian translation option or something) and it was OK. I noticed a few issues but it was good but everyone was raving about pixel ex. so I gave that a go. It is less feature packed but smoother, so very noticeable. Not that the other one was bad, but if I exited pubg mobile to nova launcher it was slow af. But was fine. Pixel experience is good. Its fast, fluid and with no issues. I haven't noticed any battery issues on it, definitely better than rr tho. I then heard that frankenrom was good but the download is down. But in the thread I found my favourite edition of the gcam mod for moto g5 plus yet, a very good hdr+ mod by bsg. So with frankenrom not working out I went to firehound. It was rr but a bit slower and overdone visuals. I went to rr again (official latest release this time) and I have to my surprise it was worse than the mod. I also found that it doesn't let my gcam work on it. Then I tried dirty unicorns for its supposed stability but was unimpressed by the light tweaking but still packed feeling (rr roms are good because they feel full of stuff and they are. This had the same feeling but just not as much stuff, not worth it). I'm now back on pixel ex and have no issues. Google photos works fine and both storage options are available. Battery life seems good. But I had some issues when it came to using xposed. After you install the modules and boot back up the screen doesn't display. Maybe the system less magisk might be better. It's almost a deal breaker, I love gboard but can't stand how it doesn't autocorrect in search fields and has made the mod awayscorrect a need for me. And in a rom with very little customisation it's more necessary than ever. But other than that it's great. Also it handles my bsg gcam mod the best so far.
All in all I'd recommend either rr or pixel ex. I'm liking the light and breezy feel of pe for now but will probably be on another rom my this time tomorrow. But check out the gcam it's got the best autofocus out of all the ones I've tried which I hear is a big problem for moto g5 plus owners. It's on the franked rom thread and it's urikill.apk.
I'd you have any more questions ask away, more than happy to help.
Edit: also very potter rom has moto actions, they'd be scrutinised by everyone if they didn't. And fingerprint gestures in the vast majority of roms.

Dont go fully custom, just unlock and root.! install the mods (like cam2api) you want using twrp.
Moto has already taken a bad decision with a 32-bit oreo, see my point is 64-bit or not, if you are concerned about above mentioned things and as you have pointed out that at present you are satisfied with the speed and stability of stock nougat. Unlock+root+some mods might not be a bad idea as per your requirements.

Unofficial Lineage 15.1 which is Android 8.1 - I've loaded loads of ROMS on other phone and this ROM is great... no issues I can think of, great battery, great performance... the install instructions were crap but if you need a hand, let me know...
I need to say i had both Nitrogen and Bootleggers at least one week and both were smoothly great. First Nitro then Boot, in that order. But Bootleggers has a few more tweak options. In the other hand, i tried Liquid Remix only one day and was incredible with a lot of tweaks and very fast and smooth ux. Id like to hear some reviews about the three i mentioned.

Go for AEX rom...its too good for daily driver and no bugs...almost perfect 64bit 8.1 oreo for Potter

It's an idea but I'm actually tired of dealing with trying to stay updated on modified stock. Everytime there's an OTA, it's a major hassle to update, or I could block the update notification and jump through those hoops to stay outdated which seems silly too. Also, I was holding out because I thought Oreo would be 64-bit, which has proven performance gains, not to mention I wouldn't mind one of the newer gcam builds which will never work on 32bit. Basically, I lost interest bin waiting once I found out the stock rom would never be what I wanted.
I'll also add that every device I've ever owned has run a custom rom (with the exception of a couple of obscure devices which had none available- those were dark times). I'm not uncomfortable deviating from stock, but I'm into stable and not experimental. The Moto stock was so clean however, this is the longest I've ever been on stock with a device capable of custom!

Interested in this one. Loved lineage on other devices I've had. Curious why this option isn't more popular. For some reason everytime someone mentions it, conversation quickly turns to PE.

But what about the Google image uploads? Do they work, and don't they use up your gdrive storage? I'm not so ok with that.

Yes, but are there no roms that equate for stability battery and clean ui? Because I've had roms on other devices that improved stability battery and user experience.

also last time I checked there were some roms which didnt support dual sim.
Most users dont mind occasional hiccups but no compromise with basic functionality.
You should go ahead with Lineage, its not the most feature packed rom but then one can tailor cook with different mods according to one's taste.

I don't use online storage. I keep my photos in local storage only. So that's not a deal breaker for me at all.
I'm right now using havoc is it is a great rom with great features but I think it is draining the battery a bit faster.
So I want a good time which is stable and the battery life is pretty good.
Any suggestions??

No ROM is bug free, once u enter modding/flashing world u need to be prompt in trying variety of roms so that u get tailor made experience as per your usage pattern. Try other roms and u decide for urself. Afterall all this comes with a red bold DISCLAIMER.

I'd stay away from that tool - I tried it last month when trying to root and most of its steps did not properly work. I ended up doing everything after unlocking bootloader manually
Actually both that tool and the video in that post weren't terribly helpful. Unlocking bootloader isn't difficult enough to need a tool and the video was a generic rom discussion, but details vary by device and he was not talking about the G5+. Im already aware of what the roms are supposed to be, but his findings on that phone might not be consistent with our own.
I do appreciate the response and trying to help, though! So it sounds like now I'm leaning towards lineage simply because I think I can get around the issues preventing me from PE, while still getting the benefits of a clean 64-bit Oreo rom.
one more thing, do we tick all the boxes while taking backup through twrp?
Have been reading lot of warnings about taking EFS and Persist backup, so whether efs and persist should be backed up separately or just tick these boxes along with entire backup?

If I were you, I'd backup EFS and Persist both seperately and also along with the entire backup considering how precious these two partitions are.
Another reason I'd like to give you here to make a seperate EFS and Persist backup is for cases where you just need to restore EFS and Persist partitions and not the entire ROM.
Whenever you feel like going back to stock, just restore the entire backup back.
But that's just my opinion.

try Arrow rom it doesn't have many options but havr useful rom unlike other roms they are in the place where they should be not consolidated in one place.
And rom is super smooth IMO its more smooth than any other custom rom and everything works smoothly.

Go for Havoc OS (By Akhil_dev) without a single thought. I am using is from last 1 month. It is fast and fluid. No need to use any xposed module or anything else for any customization. It has lots of customization options built in.

After changing tons of phones in last weeks/months, i finaly got my s5 mini, my dream phone it seems. It is of a perfect size for me and it is very grippy due to rubber back cover. Now i want to improve it as much as i can. I want to stay on stock 6.0.1 rom (unless u see there is any point in downgrading ?). I will first say what i did and then ask what i can do to improve it further.
What i did:
1. turn all animations to 0 in developers options
2. turn off s voice
3. disabled all apps i could that i dont need
4. turned off a bunch of other things i dont need
What i need help with:
1. what else can i do to further improve performance
2. google maps app seems a bit slow. Any way to improve it or is this phone simply to weak
3. any tips for camera, how to take better photos/video, any settings i should change ?

I personally think its kind of funny that someone says that the s5 mini is their dream phone in 2019. I mean its kind of old and outdated now and while I can of course understand that you like the size of it and the rubber back, there are many alternatives which also dont break the bank. I think without rooting or flashing another Rom, your experience is not going to get better than it already is. The s5 mini is not the most powerful phone you know. Anyways I used a galaxy s5 mini from 2014 untill 2018 and I was never really happy with it. It was always slow and sluggish, though the camera was good for 2014 and what I really liked about it was its ip67 certification, I got into the pool with it xD. I ran it on Android 4.4.2 for most of its live, mainly because I rooted it in 2015 and thus couldnt update to a newer version of Android. But in late 2017 I decided to factory reset and flash a stock Android 5 Rom via Kies. After that I updatet to 6.0.1 Marshmello, but in early 2018 the hole thing was to slow for me and I threw a custom Rom on it. Android 8 but it was in beta and very buggy so I flashed Resurection Remix with Android 7.1.2. It was already way faster and more modern than on the stock Rom. But then I found a Kernel that would let me overclock the cpu from 1.4 Ghz to 1.6 Ghz and the Gpu from 400 mhz to 600 mhz. So i used that Kernel and the phone was actually very useable. The first time in 4 years of ownwership, I was really happy with my s5 mini. I bought a new phone (Honor 9) though only like 6 weeks after flashing the Kernel lol. The Honor 9, after 1 year has never let me down tough and im very very happy with it.

I'm happy with my S5 mini (G800F), but I really need an Dual SIM device with better battery life and will have to get one soon. Battery life is weak point.
I have installed LineageOS 14.1 (Android 7.1.2), didn't have success to install Gapps though. Using F-Droid and YalpStore. There are some bugs with the camera (it stops working) but after restart works fine again.
It is an OK device, but a bit slow and with short battery life.
Unfortunately from 2-3 weeks there is a problem with my main microphone and is not the mic itself but some motherboard bad connection or something. Works fine with headset but it is not really convenient
According to some people if one switches Off the LTE the battery life is better.
Instead of Gmaps I'm using HereWeGo, OruxMaps and Sygic - all for free.
About the camera: I am using Open Camera. The camera app of LOS 14.1 is really plain Of OpenCamera I like the DRO option, but it takes a few seconds to generate the picture.
Hope you will find the best way to use your S5 mini. It is very cute device with so many advantages like notification LED with RGB, ambient light sensor, NFC, IR, AMOLED, small size and weight... I will miss all of this in such a small and ergonomic package.
I understand your point. There are no more under 5" devices with normal specs. So sad...

I can't say for sure, but I quite like Viperos and AOSPExtended Oreo. Not using it actively anymore though.

I recommend the unofficial LineageOs 16 custom rom for you. This is the most stable rom I’ve ever seen for the S5 mini.
Only Requirement is to have the G800F model.
Otherwise you will break you phone.
Im running CrDroid 5.12 on my g800f with the Spookcity Kernel and Magisk. Although I'm using a Oneplus 5 as my main device I'm very happy with the results. You can run Android P roms like Posp, LineageOS, CrDroid, bootleggers or Aosp (extended). I think you can get very happy using POSP with Open Gapps nano/Pico. But CrDroid is the only rom, which is getting updated. It also is the only Pie rom supporting NFC.

This might be a pretty late reply, but I hope it can help.
If you want to stay on Marshmallow, I would really recommend rooting your device. I can't tell you exactly which, but you can deactivate a lot of system apps with root, which can improve performance in some scenarios (Look at some debloat script from other Samsung phones - a lot of the apps are the same). For deactivating system apps I use this app. Alternatively you could try to deactivate system apps without root with ADB.
In my opinion the Google apps are all very slow and all the system apps slow your device down a lot (from my experience the Google Play Services and especially the Google Play Store), which is why I either use microG on the Stock ROM or at least deactivate what I can.
Sadly you can't push much more performance out of this phone, especially not without a Custom ROM. It has four pretty weak CPUs and one really bad GPU - don't expect to be able to play any even slightly demanding games, better stay at those 2D titles. The only way to make it feel faster is to use the lightest
- OS (in my opinion any Android 6 ROM)
- system apps (disable unnecessary-seeming ones - but be very careful!) <- of course only on Stock ROM
- third-party/user apps (if an app is slow, look for alternatives - for example you could look at OSMand or MAPS.ME istead of Google Maps)

It has four pretty weak CPUs and one really bad GPU - don't expect to be able to play any even slightly demanding games, better stay at those 2D titles. The only way to make it feel faster is to use the lightest
- OS (in my opinion any Android 6 ROM)
- system apps (disable unnecessary-seeming ones - but be very careful!) <- of course only on Stock ROM
- third-party/user apps (if an app is slow, look for alternatives - for example you could look at OSMand or MAPS.ME istead of Google Maps)

The Google app is a mandatory update with the new Play Store layout and app updates eat into the storage of the phone.

I m still on 4.5.14 ( Nougat ), it's not that I haven't tried updating the ram but when I updated ( to 4.5.15 ) i was getting low battery performance, less camera performance and overall it just didn't sound fully baked and stable enough for me to update.
What I need from a phone is :
Stable Run
Great Battery Performance
Good Camera Performance
Any other useful feature are optional that it already has without effecting the beforementioned points.
Now android has released version 10 so i am almost 3 OS ver behind , Can anybody help me to know, Are there any real benefits of updating to latest OS apart from cosmetic changes ? I am an old motorola G user so i had to ask since they have forced us as a user so that we will brick if we go back to previous versions, they had changed something in the booting process ( mix of hardware and software )( i don't have an option to root since i use lots of financial which doesn't work great with rooting etc )

But that will never work if you're on nougat like op

There's no Android 10 for oneplus 5.
And the last OxygenOS versions are stable as Nougat. I can't imagine why you should not update to Pie?

I know but i came from using Motorola Phones and they use to have a lot of issues with their updated ROMs plus they have disabled the functionality of rolling back as well so one has to take lots of precautions before updating to the latest roms even though they are available earlier than other manufacturers.
Just wanted to know if the rom is stable enough and didn't issue in normal use. I use lots of financial apps, due to security reasons rooting is a no go for me. So I am just being cautious.
Also, I use the non rooted version of GCam for Photography needs so is that still available with Pie or not ?

For the gcam I don't know cause I never use it(have a professional DSLR) but check out apps section :good:

Thank you, Just one more question. Will it be easy to roll back to previous ROM ( Nougat ) in case I want to. I heard that since Oreo and in nougat there is some difference due to partitioning. Can I just upload the ROM onto the device and reboot into recovery to go back or I have to make partition myself?
The main thing I want to know is, DO I have to root to rollback or i can do that without rooting?

You can roll back with local upgrade, but that's always risky when downgrading and you have a locked bootloader. I can't recommend this.
Also rolling back from oreo to nougat I can't think of it.

I would think that using banking apps you'd probably want to be on a newer version just for the security updates. This is the main reason I'm sticking to stock these days and just taking ota updates. Stick to pixel or OnePlus or Android one devices etc and you don't need root to get good software. I use Google pay and banking apps, purchase order online so I don't want to mess with rooting anymore except on my old backup phones like my htc one m8 to update it to Oreo from marshmallow.
Even if I could have root and Google pay working then you can't just keep updated by over the air updates as far as I know. I'd spend too much time researching how to install updates and regain root etc while now I just get an update pop up on my phone once every couple of months and tell it to install and wait a couple of minutes and it's good to go again.
I meant to add that I'm on 9.0.9 and I have had no issues with it. Performance is great, Camera is good, battery life is good. I had this phone for 2 years updated regularly from nougat to pie. I dropped the phone in the ocean and had to replace it, used a pixel XL for several months (on Android 10 recently). I bought another used op5 because I needed dual Sims for work. I don't regret it.
There was a choppy scrolling issue that came and went for a little while on pie (my first OnePlus 5 and also this replacement) but it seems to be completely gone now. Either with a recent update or possibly some setting I changed in developer options. Even when it had that issues it loaded everything extremely fast and held everything in ram usually. Battery life has never been an issue for me on this phone. It's better than the pixel XL but a lot and way better than a Galaxy s8. Standby time is really good and screen on time can go over 6 hours. Sometimes I unplug the phone before bed before it's even fully charged (90 percent or so) and go to work the next day and come home with over 70% still at 5pm.
My OP5 went from stable to buggy after my first OTA update. Once I rebooted from the first update my phone started to freeze up and blackout until a forced reboot.
Once I hit 9.0.4 I lost use of my gyro, camera, and GPS. Until I used an Unbrick tool and went back to 8.1 Oreo.
The phone still freezes up, screen blacks out, and LED lights turn a baby blue color until I force a reboot.

That sounds like a hardware problem. Did you not attempt to return the device? If it was a software bug that happened to all of them it would have been talked about extensively here back when this phone was new and still popular.

Turned out to be a faulty(corrupt) OTA flash. Rolled back to 8.0 OTA and it went back to normal.
