I've been patiently waiting for the official Oreo rom, but now that we have the soak test and it's still 32-bit (I guess I shouldn't have been surprised, yet I am), I'm ready to throw in the towel and go custom. The 64-bit roms seem to get better benchmark scores as well as compatibility with newer editions of google camera (although Savitar's 32-bit Gcams are pretty solid and support RAW). But there are SO MANY rom options, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.

This is a problem for me as some of the gcams I play with take rather large photos, and I'm always pretty close to the limit of my Google Drive space.
Also, I've heard the lead dev maintaining that ROM has moved on to another phone, so I'm wary of future updates and if current bugs will be addressed.
I'm not looking for bleeding edge or bells and whistles. Like I said, if Moto had put out a stock 64-bit Oreo rom by now I'd stick with that. I need the moto actions to work (particularly the chop flash light. Freaking most useful thing I've ever had in a phone. EVER), as well as the fingerprint reader. I've been trying many roms over the last 48 hours and have come out with some first impressions that may help you. The first rom I tried was resurrection remix, a mod a user made of the official one (downloaded it by accident and thought it was official, upon reading up on it the only difference seems to me armanian translation option or something) and it was OK. I noticed a few issues but it was good but everyone was raving about pixel ex. so I gave that a go. It is less feature packed but smoother, so very noticeable. Not that the other one was bad, but if I exited pubg mobile to nova launcher it was slow af. But was fine. Pixel experience is good. Its fast, fluid and with no issues. I haven't noticed any battery issues on it, definitely better than rr tho. I then heard that frankenrom was good but the download is down. But in the thread I found my favourite edition of the gcam mod for moto g5 plus yet, a very good hdr+ mod by bsg. So with frankenrom not working out I went to firehound. It was rr but a bit slower and overdone visuals. I went to rr again (official latest release this time) and I have to my surprise it was worse than the mod. I also found that it doesn't let my gcam work on it. Then I tried dirty unicorns for its supposed stability but was unimpressed by the light tweaking but still packed feeling (rr roms are good because they feel full of stuff and they are. This had the same feeling but just not as much stuff, not worth it). I'm now back on pixel ex and have no issues. Google photos works fine and both storage options are available. Battery life seems good. But I had some issues when it came to using xposed. After you install the modules and boot back up the screen doesn't display. Maybe the system less magisk might be better. It's almost a deal breaker, I love gboard but can't stand how it doesn't autocorrect in search fields and has made the mod awayscorrect a need for me. And in a rom with very little customisation it's more necessary than ever. But other than that it's great. Also it handles my bsg gcam mod the best so far.
All in all I'd recommend either rr or pixel ex. I'm liking the light and breezy feel of pe for now but will probably be on another rom my this time tomorrow. But check out the gcam it's got the best autofocus out of all the ones I've tried which I hear is a big problem for moto g5 plus owners. It's on the franked rom thread and it's urikill.apk.
I'd you have any more questions ask away, more than happy to help.
Edit: also very potter rom has moto actions, they'd be scrutinised by everyone if they didn't. And fingerprint gestures in the vast majority of roms.

Unlock+root+some mods might not be a bad idea as per your requirements.

Unofficial Lineage 15.1 which is Android 8.1 - I've loaded loads of ROMS on other phone and this ROM is great... no issues I can think of, great battery, great performance... the install instructions were crap but if you need a hand, let me know...
I need to say i had both Nitrogen and Bootleggers at least one week and both were smoothly great. First Nitro then Boot, in that order. But Bootleggers has a few more tweak options. In the other hand, i tried Liquid Remix only one day and was incredible with a lot of tweaks and very fast and smooth ux. Id like to hear some reviews about the three i mentioned.

Go for AEX rom...its too good for daily driver and no bugs...almost perfect 64bit 8.1 oreo for Potter

It's an idea but I'm actually tired of dealing with trying to stay updated on modified stock. Everytime there's an OTA, it's a major hassle to update, or I could block the update notification and jump through those hoops to stay outdated which seems silly too. Also, I was holding out because I thought Oreo would be 64-bit, which has proven performance gains, not to mention I wouldn't mind one of the newer gcam builds which will never work on 32bit. Basically, I lost interest bin waiting once I found out the stock rom would never be what I wanted.
I'll also add that every device I've ever owned has run a custom rom (with the exception of a couple of obscure devices which had none available- those were dark times). I'm not uncomfortable deviating from stock, but I'm into stable and not experimental. The Moto stock was so clean however, this is the longest I've ever been on stock with a device capable of custom!

Interested in this one. Loved lineage on other devices I've had. Curious why this option isn't more popular. For some reason everytime someone mentions it, conversation quickly turns to PE.

But what about the Google image uploads? Do they work, and don't they use up your gdrive storage? I'm not so ok with that.

Yes, but are there no roms that equate for stability battery and clean ui? Because I've had roms on other devices that improved stability battery and user experience.

also last time I checked there were some roms which didnt support dual sim.
Most users dont mind occasional hiccups but no compromise with basic functionality.
You should go ahead with Lineage, its not the most feature packed rom but then one can tailor cook with different mods according to one's taste.

I don't use online storage. I keep my photos in local storage only. So that's not a deal breaker for me at all.
I'm right now using havoc is it is a great rom with great features but I think it is draining the battery a bit faster.
So I want a good time which is stable and the battery life is pretty good.
Any suggestions??

No ROM is bug free, once u enter modding/flashing world u need to be prompt in trying variety of roms so that u get tailor made experience as per your usage pattern. Try other roms and u decide for urself. Afterall all this comes with a red bold DISCLAIMER.

I'd stay away from that tool - I tried it last month when trying to root and most of its steps did not properly work. I ended up doing everything after unlocking bootloader manually
Actually both that tool and the video in that post weren't terribly helpful. Unlocking bootloader isn't difficult enough to need a tool and the video was a generic rom discussion, but details vary by device and he was not talking about the G5+. Im already aware of what the roms are supposed to be, but his findings on that phone might not be consistent with our own.
I do appreciate the response and trying to help, though! So it sounds like now I'm leaning towards lineage simply because I think I can get around the issues preventing me from PE, while still getting the benefits of a clean 64-bit Oreo rom.
one more thing, do we tick all the boxes while taking backup through twrp?
Have been reading lot of warnings about taking EFS and Persist backup, so whether efs and persist should be backed up separately or just tick these boxes along with entire backup?

If I were you, I'd backup EFS and Persist both seperately and also along with the entire backup considering how precious these two partitions are.
Another reason I'd like to give you here to make a seperate EFS and Persist backup is for cases where you just need to restore EFS and Persist partitions and not the entire ROM.
Whenever you feel like going back to stock, just restore the entire backup back.
But that's just my opinion.

try Arrow rom it doesn't have many options but havr useful rom unlike other roms they are in the place where they should be not consolidated in one place.
And rom is super smooth IMO its more smooth than any other custom rom and everything works smoothly.

Go for Havoc OS (By Akhil_dev) without a single thought. I am using is from last 1 month. It is fast and fluid. No need to use any xposed module or anything else for any customization. It has lots of customization options built in.

Ive been using the moto x 2013 for some time now. I was going to get a S4 or G2, I just cant stand how big the new flagships are these days. I finally ended up on buying a oneplus x. Ordered 2/29 and should arrive today 3/2....pretty fast shipping I think!
Im excited to try it out. I do like CM but going to wait for a stable official CM 13. Ive never tried oxygen, any tips or tricks to make it better? Any bugs that I should be aware of?

Enjoy with oxygen os . Few minor things are there but nothing which hampers normal usage. I wouldn't point it out now because then you will specifically look out for those issues. Enjoy it, its a nice experience and with oneplus team working hard on, it will get better .
If you look for customization,mod and seemless experience, we have dedicated, awesome developers who are continuousuly working on Kernels, ROMs and other stuff . I had not thought of this fast development for this phone. Definitely a great feeling.

Personally, I prefer CM13 over Oxygen. It's stable enough for using it as my daily driver. I've tried every rom available for the OPX and always go back to CM12 or CM13 by MasterAwesome..
If you decide to root, there are many options for tweaking. I use the blu_sparks kernel, tasker and secure settings, viper4android, xPosed, greenify, busybox, ad away...
My screen-on-time varies from day to day, but I always make it through the day with normal usage.
There are bugs on any device, it depends what rom you're using. Some get resolved faster than others, but there are no perfect devices.
I'm moderately happy with the OPX. It's the right physical size for me and looks great with the rounded glass. It feels great in the hands. I love having the sd card.
I have had an issue with the magnetic sensor tripping and shutting off/locking my screen repeatedly, but that was "resolved" by using a non-flip-cover case.
If I wasn't as comfortable as I am flashing and rooting devices, I probably wouldn't be very happy with this device.
When the time comes to upgrade again, I doubt I will buy another OnePlus. They have atrocious customer service. It's basically non-existent.

As for what I prefer to run most, I can't really answer that. Right now I'm enjoying Tipsy with Blu Spark, AICP is great in terms of customization, FlexOS was amazing when I gave it a shot, Tameseks is really good and is probably my favorite implementation of CM, RR has the features, and CM is... CM. You can't go wrong there.
I highly recommend checking out a few ROMs

OxygenOS is fine. I have been using it since Dec 2015. It is clean and very close to AOSP Lollipop. I will stay with stock for official Marshmallow update from OnePlus. Hopefully the developers community will have similar AOSP based ROM available to play with.

Well its too early to call for favourite ROM. CM13 is good but RIL is little weak on that. WIfi, mobile data issue. Its as close to daily driver but depends on person to person. Since all of them are close to pure android, It would be hard to pick a favourite . Btw right now I am sticking to OOs for manual camera mode, it comes pretty handy sometimes. Though there are few bugs, smoothness makes me happy. Btw I am rocking Boeffla kernel, greenify, amplify and xposed.
Thanks all for recommendations. Been using it for few hours and so far I like it. I do wish the size was smaller like the moto x but I'm sure will get use to it. One thing, wow is this phone slippery! I use to have nexus 4, that was also all glass but I never felt like I would drop it. Maybe it's the metal edge of the OP. Any good cases, something slim and light?

I recently bought few phones and don't know which one to keep to replace my old 2013 moto x. I got galaxy alpha, oneplus x, and Z5 compact. To be honest none feel as good ergonomically as the moto x. The oneplus is nice, good screen and speed but a Lil big. The z5c is really nice but darn thing si hard to hold without a case. Just way too slippery. And loli on it not very fast in my opinion. Also gets pretty warm with light surfing. Not terribly hot but the hottest of the bunch. The alpha is good all around. Nice size, weight is awesome... So light! Speed seems good. My first time using Samsung, it's not as terrible as I thought would be. I switched to Nova prime and feels good. No SD card is a bummer but not deal breaker. It's also slippery but best grip of bunch without case. Screen is good but a bit yellow and not as sharp next to oneplus.
What do you all think, which would you keep?

I am the type of person that nitpicks all the imperfections in phones. every single phone that been out for the past 6 months i have tried it. so i basically had a try of every kind of software. i had a iphone 6s plus but i felt that i paid to much for what i was getting. so then i was hesitating getting the one plus x because it said it was missing bands. but i was lucky to live in a area where lte is supported. i feel the one plus x is a well rounded device. and the community for this phone is pretty amazing. i was also coming from honor 5x but there was development on it yet. for me the size is not an issue i actually i wish it was a little bigger. alpha and compact i haven't tried them. but what your getting for in the one plus x is definitely a win in my book. if you think its too slippery buy a skin from dbrand or slickwraps. I'm glad to see that you're having a positive experience with CM13. May I ask how battery life worked for you? — as I'm seeing battery life as a con for a majority of the ROMs available for this device.
I have previously used CM roms on my phones so I isntalled CM 12.1 by MasterAwsome right after I got the OPX. Of course like it , but encountered a bug in volume call. So decided to give a try to Oxygen OS 2.2.0 and I can say I am more then happy with it. Missed some CM customization but nothing I can not handle. On Oxygen , I encounter the bug related to the missing button to close all opened apps - I had to reboot to safe mode then reboot normally to fix it.
I use wifi on work and home, 3g and location always on during day, gps and sound while walking - and I can make it through 2 days before charging, since I watch videos rarely and as long as screen brightness is not set high (I set it at 25%). During the night battery-saver option comes handy.

It's the best in comparison to any other ROM out there. 6)-7 hours of SOT easily
I'm liking the X more and more as I use it.
When I'm using SD card, every time I reboot, I have to enable SD card in camera to use it, is this normal?

Well, battery life is relative. Some days i get 4 hours SoT, sometimes i can get 7. It depends on so many things: whats apps i used that day and for how long, the strength of my wifi/cell signals, screen brightness etc.
On some roms, ive noticed the battery draining very quickly even while not being used.
Right now im using the new CandySix rom and it also has pretty decent battery life.

I have had my OPO for a couple years now. I must admit I freaking love this phone. It's been fast and reliable since the first boot. It fits my life-style perfectly. I have been fortunate to have not been plagued with any of the common OPO issues. No yellow screen, battery issues, software glitches, etc.
With that being said, I have the bar set pretty high right now. However, It is not in my nature to leave cool tech equipment in it's original condition. I am ready to make a move on my OPO.
I rolled though the TOP ROMS thread and nothing really stuck out or grabbed my attention. I'm seeking a path to success here and was looking for some recommendations from experienced users that have had and experimented with multiple roms and use the OPO for more than pictures and facebook. I run 2 businesses and this phone is a staple in my life.
If I could only change one thing from stock, it would definitely be the DPI. I find 400 to be the best for my use, with font still readable but lots more screen space.
In terms of roms, I would recommend Resurrection Remix. Very reliable with pretty much every feature you could want but without the performance hit that others have.
For a business user though, you would need a solid backup and recovery method for when your modding eventually ends up with a bootloop. I have heard that flashfire is pretty good but, as my phone is too full to make a backup, I have not used it myself.
Sultans rom is unique because instead of adding features (its same as stock rom) he's actually gone deeper and improved the camera, battery gauge and other things. Read everything on his post that he's made better. His rom is at 2ghz instead of 2.5ghz YET it performs better than stock ever did.

I would suggest you try out CandySix ROM (AOSP + Sultan's kernel), it's the best ROM I've tried so far. Full set of features, stable and great battery life. No idea what happens with CM ROMs including Sultan's but I am plagued with core apps and Android OS wakelocks that destroy battery.
If you want a simple AOSP ROM without a ton of features but rock stable I'd suggest Omni.

I run my resolution at 440 with small text. I've played around with that quite a bit, I've been pleased with the current for a while now. You're 100% correct about the backup and recovery. That is going to be my first step. I'll check out flashfire and see what that's about.

This is something that definitely interest me. It follows my natural logic. I'll be checking this out for sure.

My plan here is to give each selected ROM 10 days of run time and track important features. At the end I'll probably write a review with my feedback. I'll add these two, to the list.

I have unlocked my bootloader, rooted with Magisk and flashed AsopExtended Rom. Very happy with the performance of my A2017U as it is right now. My question to ya'll is, What would be the pros and cons of returning to complete stock (for OTA updates) or sticking with rooted and custom rom and not being able to receive OTA updates?

Lol that depends of your needs - I stick to stock because of audio (mostly) and somehow bcz of camera (as far as I know you can install stock camera app).
That's question is a little bit irrevelant when you was stock and now you are testing custom rom.
So the answer is simply - replay to your question by yourself and with margin to your needs.
Had to test the waters with custom roms on this phone, but was just wanting to hear other peoples thoughts on the subject. I've always tinkered with customizing my phones and enjoy doing so. Would like to hear different points of view and then see if it would make me change my mind. Sometimes custom roms have little bugs that people can or can't live with, and in some cases stock is best for total functionality. Just curious of others opinions.....

IMHO custom ROMs are littered with bugs, but mostly overlookable. Take the phone bug or storage with SD card bug for example.
Stock works better in every regard (except substratum, damn you mifavor) and with MiFavor 5 this is even truer. But if you like your current ROM there's no reason to go back...

Yeah, I finally went back to stock B25 via the DrakenFx method to retain root and custom recovery. I came across the phone bug on my custom rom and that helped me make my decision to go back to a stock rom.....
Yep, used custom ROMs from the first week of owning the phone until about a month ago when I went back to B25 with Magisk. Couldn't be happier.
I was about to make a similar thread myself but saw this one. I have been running custom roms since day one but have been considering returning to stock.
A brief summary of the benefits:
Reasons to go with stock:
Fully functional ZTE camera app with no bugs - This is perhaps more important than you might think, ZTE haven't enabled the Camera 2 API which means its very possible we are going to get the best quality and feature-set by sticking with the stock app. If ZTE haven't released their blobs there could very well be reasons to stick with the default camera app...not only that but I like it. You can install the mod, but there are aspects that will never work and some roms and kernels play more nicely with the mod than others.
Dolby Atmos app. Similar to the camera on stock this would just mean less messing about, you can of course get atmos mods in magisk but whether they work as well as the stock ZTE app I am not sure. The strange thing is I have never had the stock ZTE Axon atmos magisk mod to work on a custom rom, even though I have an Axon!
Reliability, no need to worry about force closes or apps not working, everything pretty much just works. So much less stress if you use your phone as a daily driver.
Ease of use, less features makes the phone easier to use. In some cases even when you are a tinkerer like me its sometimes good to be able to forget about continuously tweaking stuff and digging yourself in to a never ending upgrade cycle.
Oreo, it looks like if you stay stock we will see Oreo sooner than custom roms.
Reasons to go custom:
Substratum, oh boy would I miss this going back to stock. The ZTE theme engine is pants compared and I love the work that goes in to my current premium theme.
Battery life, perhaps with the aid of also a custom kernel there are some very nice roms and kernels being worked on which allow you to fully customise and save battery life.
Features, you can set the phone up exactly as you want too, every small detail can be customised. You can choose exactly which rom you like based on the features you use.
Performance, you can get more performance out of a custom rom with custom kernel and find a nicer balance between battery and performance, whichever suits you.
Fun, its fun to flash different roms and get the flashing bug. You learn a lot and get to join in with a fantastic community where people help each other.
Third option, run a debloated custom rom.
Seems to be more and more popular, as an ex Nexus 5 user I loved Cataclysm rom for this very reason. You keep all the features associated with stock with added performance benefits, fixes and less bloat. There is a downside if you plan on keeping atmos as some stock roms seem to strip it away, but it is a nice compromise between the options above. Usually these roms are more reliable as they are based on stock too. If you want a lean rom that just works, this may suit you!
Its such a hard choice and one I still havent decided on, if I have missed anything please let me know!

My first smartphone was a ZTE blade 2 and it was a beast for the money, this phone is tremendous too. My GF owns a pixel and apart from the camera this phone trumps it for value no question...for less than half the price.
I have to say though, I do miss the days of my Nexus 5 and the larger mod community, I realise these days have gone now with google devices but perhaps next time I will opt to go to Oneplus just so I can trust a bit more that there will be less caveats going custom as if there is one complaint I have with ZTE it is their unwillingness to release their source code for the little tiny things like the camera api and atmos.

-Stock still has RRO support, so while it is kinda craptastic to use substratum this way, it is doable. I have most of my apps with Swift Dark (the ones that don't force close anyways) and Lawnchair with black theme, on MiFavor 5 which already has a rather black quick settings screen. The result is awesome
While you might be getting more battery life from a custom ROM, I totally disagree on the performance part. Everything works just slower. But yeah, battery-wise I got 7h SOT once which is absolutely bonkers :silly:
If you want a nice modded stock try any MiFavor 5 modded ROM like RDX or ADM Team. Those keep Atmos and use MiFavor 5 B13, which seemingly have a new camera app?

Thanks I will give ADM a try first since RDX seems to exclusively for the A2017 and I own the A2017U.
Frankly when I saw substratum without OMS support before I wasn't impressed but it sounds like it's worth a look.
Performance wise I loved running AOKP. It runs so much faster than resurrection remix and faster than my brief time on stock also.
It's a pain sacrifices have to made somewhere, but I guess you can't argue for the money!

I think you simply have to flash the univ bootstack and your modem file to install RDX, it just wasn't tested on other phones but the A2017. but yeah, just use ADM Team
If we don't get Oreo, I will root mine, debloat etc and unroot just to keep it stock but lean. Stock camera in Nougat is quite good IMO. Atmos is pants but I will leave it alone.

Just installed adm rom and substratum but can't get any themes to work at all. Substratum appears to work and let's me install them but after a reboot they don't work.
I tested with the Google app, gmail and chrome amongst others. I am using swift black.
I guess it's just a bug with the adm Rom? Magisk is working fine I think.

It can't be because I had everything themed on ADM ROM too. Except system ui and that stuff since it can't be themed. no idea why that happens.

Were you using the new release with version 5 of mifavor?
What about systemless host list in magisk enabled to get adaway to work?
Only two things I have changed. I am using A2017U with the b13 bootstack.
Haven't changed anything else so no idea why it isn't working.

i was using the old release with version 5 (ADM Team V3)
I would stick with stock unless you are an extreme power user. ZTE fixed 99% of the issues with MiFavor with 7.1.1 and custom ROMs are littered with SO MANY little bugs. MiFavor is extremely stable now. Audio and camera is also much worse on custom.
But hey whatever you prefer.
can someone who's using LOS comment on any advantages over stock? Now that we can install magisk and xposed on stock roms, is there any advantage at all to switch to LOS? How are the comparisons on battery life and speed?
Just got the phone couple days ago. I m not new to rooting and custom rooms. But I think it is better to stick with stock for now. At least for next 3-4 months imo. The phone already has Oreo and is very stable. Battery life is pretty good as well. Barely any lag, if any. I mean things just work and this is basically stock Android. IDK. Just my 2 cents. Unless something revolutionary happens in custom rom community I will be rocking stock for a while.
Generally people flash Lineage to get a more stock Android experience on their phones. The Essential already runs stock Android. The only advantage Lineage could possibly have while stock Android is still being updated on this phone would be whatever features Lineage offers that aren't included in stock Android. You can make the Essential faster by rooting the phone and flashing a custom kernel. You don't need a custom ROM to do that.
But there are significant disadvantages to installing Lineage on this phone. For one thing Lineage doesn't offer an official build for this phone. Unless something has changed over the last couple of days Lineage for this phone is only available as an unofficial build. That doesn't just mean no official support. Lineage doesn't sanction unofficial builds and there is no way of knowing if the build is poorly coded or not. Anyone can compile an unofficial build. You can watch a YouTube video and learn how to do it yourself. If someone making an unofficial build actually knows what they are doing there is a process with Lineage to make the build official as long as both the DEV and the build meet specific standards. Flashing an unofficial build of any ROM on any phone is a risk.
Then there is the fact that custom flashing on the Essential phone can reportedly lead to hard bricking the phone pretty easily. The a & b partitions make custom flashing a lot more difficult than on single partition phones and people with a lot of previous flashing experience have managed to hard brick their Essential phone within hours of taking it out of the box.
I don't personally think custom flashing on the Essential has enough upside to be worth the risk right now but it's your phone. Unless you don't mind turning your phone into a paperweight you should at least read the entire XDA rooting guide from beginning to end (including all of the comments from people who followed the guide) and also go through the Essential Telegram group which seems to be aimed at people who are flashing on the phone. That way you will have a good idea of what you are getting into and reduce the chances of bricking your phone.

Didn't flash lineage because heard about 360° isn't working so far...

AOSiP and Lineage run fine for me. Many bugs that need to be worked out, but they still run okay. Currently running stock however as I am trying to pinpoint what is killing my battery life. One day I am running great, the next I am leaking % left and right.
I can't stand stock rom at alllll. RR is the best the phone has ran for me. I can't stand the way touch works on stock, the scrolling feels like wading through molasses.
Plus true immersive mode. Honestly I see zero benefit to stock, but that's just my opinion.
RR is pretty far from the purpose and philosophy of LOS. LOS attempts to create a stock experience with some additional features. RR is for people who want to mod their phones with as many custom options as possible. I tried RR on my OP5 and wasn't a fan but I can definitely understand why someone who doesn't like stock Android would enjoy it. But the Essential phone is a terrible choice if you want to run custom ROMs. There's almost no development for this phone and I don't know if any custom ROM other than AOSIP even has an official build. If you want to run custom ROMs you would have been much better off with an OP5T. Not only are there a ton of official custom ROMs including RR but the phone is super easy to flash on and pretty much impossible to hard brick.
LOS runs smoother than the stock ROM and I it has more advantages.
LOS:
Immersive Mode : It's very easy to hide navbar and statusbar. That and an modded Youtube app and you are ready to really use the full screen. Not just till the notch.
It's very helpful in games too where you need apps or adb with the stock ROM.
Feel: It's just smoother and more responsive thant the stock ROM
Essential Apps works just normal

Updater : You get many Updates and you can just download and install it in the background. Then you restart and you just installed an update without any waiting time.

If there was an official build of LOS there would be a lot fewer issues. The unofficial build is probably just the ROM code auto compiled for this device with no further tweaks or fixes. You can do the same thing with any open source ROM. Have you tried AOSIP? I would think that would run better since it's actually official. That was also a solid ROM when I ran it on other phones. Not a lot of features but very stable fast and smooth.
Is updating a custom ROM difficult on this phone? Do you need to reflash the stock system image and TWRP on a computer or can it be updated like a simple OTA?

360 isn't likely to work on any custom ROM because the code for it is probably proprietary. Phone manufacturers rarely release code for something like that. The camera code is probably the only thing on the Essential that isn't stock Android. This phone could easily run faster but Essential seems to have opted for better battery life in their stock setup. Google does exactly the opposite. They maximize performance so much that their phones run too hot and tend to burn out after a couple years. That's happened so far with the 5X, 6P & XL. Three flagship phones in a row dying from heat damage after a couple years is a pretty consistent track record.
When I was running LOS earlier this month the 360 camera worked...

You can do the same thing with any open source ROM. Have you tried AOSIP? I would think that would run better since it's actually official. That was also a solid ROM when I ran it on other phones. Not a lot of features but very stable fast and smooth.
Is updating a custom ROM difficult on this phone? Do you need to reflash the stock system image and TWRP on a computer or can it be updated like a simple OTA?

360 isn't likely to work on any custom ROM because the code for it is probably proprietary. Phone manufacturers rarely release code for something like that. The camera code is probably the only thing on the Essential that isn't stock Android. This phone could easily run faster but Essential seems to have opted for better battery life in their stock setup. Google does exactly the opposite. They maximize performance so much that their phones run too hot and tend to burn out after a couple years. That's happened so far with the 5X, 6P & XL. Three flagship phones in a row dying from heat damage after a couple years is a pretty consistent track record.

The 360 cam has worked for months...
The only reason this device isn't official... Has to do with Jenkins and gapps...

LOS has no quality control over an unofficial build. If it runs fine great. If 360 cam works even better. If I wanted to run a custom ROM I would have just stuck with the OP5. LOS was official on that device. I bought the Essential specifically because it runs stock Android. Buying a phone that runs stock Android and has virtually no development community so you can run a custom ROM on it doesn't make much sense to me but it's your phone.
LineageOS is great but it could be much better if we had a better Support with the essential phone.
It has many advantages.
I just installed the stock ROM and can say
- battery life is better with stock
- UI runs smooth enough but apps like Facebook runs better with Lineage
- Instagram runs better because I had the bug in Lineage that videos getting skipped while playing
- whatsapp voice messages sounds awful sometimes because the sound crackles (no problem with lineage)
- no expanded desktop mode with stock rom
Both have advantages and disadvantages.
I am just telling my experience, all the Dev's are best, they are the ones who let me explore more in around android and it's versions.
I used custom roms on k5 plus 3gb for 2 years i think.
It was like first few months i used the original rom and then i voided the warranty with custom roms as i saw more possibility and newer versions of android coming better than what i had. I kept exploring every part of the phone, and whatever softwares i could use and get more from this phone. Few roms lasted around 4-5 months. I love the nougat roms still, there is a Android Q rom already here, amazing. It was a good experience, until this last few months i started to have battery drain faster when i would use the hotspot feature or use bluetooth for headsets, and gps was like the most battery drainer. I kept changing roms and seeing what would give more bettery life while using, the sleep/screenoff state uses like no energy and then opposite happen if i use in full brightness outside and gps
Then
today i just tried to see the stock rom backup is working or not, it did, and now i realise that the most stable rom is the stock rom that comes from lenovo. The battery life is just way better than any other roms (+1hour than what you get in current Oreo and pie roms), the performance is back, Dolby Atmos is back and works, the inbuilt vr works.
The apps which were quite heavy lagged in animations in custom roms, stock does it smoothly, and i didn't need to get a small gapps package for performance this time, stock has like most gapps i think and it's smooth.
New stuff like play protect, assistant, well-being, etc are now available for this old lollipop rom as well, most of the features in the future versions are now available to use with simple downloads and a few majisk modules, without harming performance.
i am not sure how secure the rom/os it self is with old security patches. But yeah original rom got to be top 5 in best rom/os available for this device in terms of overall usability in daily life.
Tell me what your experience has been, i will use the stock lenovo again now for sometime. And might get back to custom".:laugh::good:

just to add you could try the latest stock ROM our device got wich is MM, and tell us your experience. I'm on it since a lot of time, and I won't move from it anymore.

go to TWRP and restore only /boot and /system partitions. that's it.
You could share with us how did you feel it compared with LP.

Lenovo stock ROM wasn't that bad but after installing Android 10 (AOSP) Custom ROM on my Vive K5 Plus, it's feels a relief.
Yes there are some minor issues & bugs but over all satisfactory experience.
Personally I will always stick with this ROM over Lenovo stock 5.1

Yes, I extended a bit, but not that much as you unnecessary long OP, just to say stock ROM is more battery saver than any custom ROM.

Yep aosp 10 feels good.... I will use it when it gets a bit more updates
AOSP 10 has got another build. I guess the last possible build since Dev may be moving out of Vibe K5 Plus platform.
I have just upgraded to the new build & it's stable enough.
Yes although performance can't be called butter smooth but it's better than previous build & most of the phone features that I may need in daily usage are working fine.
Standby time is good but SoT is on lower side, but I can't blame the ROM, it's my battery which is very old & worn out by now.

The best rom with extended battery life was AOSP extended. i used it for 2 years with Dolby atmos mode and it worked flawlessly. Stock rom eats up battery too fast.
