Camera Quality - Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom Questions & Answers

I was hoping some of you Zenfone 3 Zoom owners could elaborate on the camera quality. Are you guys happy with it? What level would you say it's at, anywhere remotely close to current or last gen's top flagships? I'm mainly interested in the standard lens.
I obviously don't own one myself but have looked at quite a lot of reviews and videos on youtube and I get that the camera is good for a mid range phone, but can it actually compete with high end phones in terms of details it produces and dynamic range? Quite often the greens seem to be too saturated, the highlights look blown out, and, maybe the factor putting me off the most, the leaves on the trees look like they are painted (I couldnt figure out if that's because of poor HDR processing or whether it happens even with HDR off). Here are two galleries with sample photos that I found online:
Sample Gallery 1, all photos from ZF3Z
Sample Gallery 2, not all photos from ZF3Z
I feel like some of the photos within these galleries demonstrate the described 'issues' quite well, especially those in the google photos album.
Maybe some of you can add more sample galleries to this thread?
This photo shows the leaves and gras looking painted very well, just zoom in and look at the grass in front of the river. Could somebody please test with their own device whether this issue can be solved by turning HDR off or by using a different camera app? Or is it solved with the Nougat update? If this can't be fixed by different settings I would have to conclude that the camera on my Samsung S4 was better than this..

Yes it would be nice to see some pictures. I've just broken my zf3 deluxe and I wondering if zoom s would be good enough to buy.

Hi. The camera is very good, comparable to my previous galaxy note 4 and my wife's galaxy s7 edge.
Fast focus, good image quality and two cameras, one wide 25mm wide and one normal 59mm wide.
Strong point is the portrait mode, which uses both cameras to create a background blur and works much better than I expected. In addition the manual mode is quite interesting.
However I found the front panoramic (for wide angle selfies) much worse than the equivalent of the galaxy note 4: slow, difficult to use and often with mistakes in joining images.
Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the camera and the phone.

Ok. Thanks for your opinion. It would be pleasure, if You could post here some pictures in original size. I'm interested the most with some text and exterior fotos to see its quality with details. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, would you be able to upload them in full quality somewhere please? Also I can see from the file naming that they were shot with HDR Auto, could you please upload some comparison shots of the same motive, once with HDR auto on, once HDR off?
Would be much appreciated!

Since no one here has shared photos in the original quality so far I guess the camera really is just good for a mid tier device but can't compete with flagships.
I've read a couple of reviews that also pointed in that direction, eg
digitaltrends.com asus-zenfone-3-zoom-review/ :
[...] the camera is only just usable in low-light. It’s not all that surprising – few phones have come close to offering great low-light capabilities, but with such a camera-centric device, you might expect better. In broad daylight, photos are more saturated than we’d like, and details aren’t as sharp. Not only that, but colors just seem a little off. Photos look somewhat like an oil painting rather than a photograph

I just compared the zf3z camera with that of the iPhone 7 indoors. The iPhone's definitely better, but if you use HDR Pro, the zf3z can get close.
I also own the S7, and in low light its way better than the zf3z.
When using the telephoto in daylight, the zf3z is clearly better.

Camera is very good, but the app does tend to lag or crash. Very powerful for photographers / manual settings. Reminds me of Sony's a6000.

It has the same sensor as the Pixel 2. Just install the Pixel3Mod camera port from Pixel and you have a Pixel 2

I find with the stock camera that If you turn off HDR and optimization the photos come out really good.

Z3 camera worse than Moto G 2014?

Today I tested canera performance on my Z3 and my brother's Moto G (2014). The result scared me a little. I hope it's just me who thought the moto G ones were more vivid... what do u guys think?

It looked more like the z3's pics. The Moto saturation is a little high.
Yes, sadly.
Try the Camera FV-5 apk. Not that any particular app makes the pictures look better but it gives you a DSLR complete control feel to it. Also the Aviary apk (free) has some nice simple touch ups for pictures.

Whats wrong with the pics?
The Moto pictures look as said saturated blurred and low in quality.
The camera of the Z3 is the best one I ever had. Even in low light enviroment it makes awesome pics.
Compare some pics in the evening when u are watching tv with lights out and be happy to have a phone with such an awesome cam.
The Cam and the Display are the 2 things that keeps me away from installing CM.
If u want more colors play a bit around with the special effects f.e. hdr.

So, I wasn't there but this is what I interpret the pictures as.
The Moto G pics aren't really over-saturated, they just lack dynamic range (difference between dark vs light areas). They essentially tuned the sensor so that if this sort of thing happens, it chooses the brighter side of the scene. The leaves and darker areas can't be recorded as dark as they actually were, so it chooses to make the overall picture just brighter. Sony does a much better job of capturing the light areas such as the concrete and also the darker shades and leaves. The other difference is white balance, the Sony chose something a little cooler, and the Moto warmer. Without being there, tough to say which is more accurate but from the pics I'd say the Sony got it right.
Easy fix, force the Sony to overexpose or use something like pixlr to boost exposure.
Second picture is much of the same, the thing that jumps out is the red colors. In the moto it looks orange, in the Z it looks much more red. Again, if I had to guess the Z got it right.
Now, this is all great with plants, rocks, and garden hoses, but what happens when you take a picture of people? Those Moto pics are going to look off, like people's faces look like cake and lack the proper color it needs.

Thats kind of the while point of "point and shoot". I should be fiddling with settings when im trying to capture that moment. Superior auto setting is an absolute garbage

Xposed module changes superior auto to 20.7 mp makes a big difference
Seriously what is wrong with you guys.
Have you ever used an high quality cam?
In every shop there are phones where you can test them.
There are more tests in the net as you could ever read in your lifetime.
So if you don't like it don't buy it.
Should sound familiar as an iPhone user xD
Have just done a few shots but I'm sure you can save your favorite settings.
If this is too mich work to do I would suggest to sell your Z3 and buy an Moto or similar and stop annoying us.
I personally think the z3 camera is one of the best out there not hard to use manual mode
Sorry. I should've quoted the person who said that that he prefeerd the more vibrant colors over the more accurate. I meant that if you want it more vibrant you should edit it so and let the original photo be correct.
I use 8MP on manual it does well, it's just "Superior Auto" that sucks.

Z5 camera VS Iphone6 plus, SGS6, LG G4, Z3

Here they did a test with most new phones including the Z5! Shame i cant link the photo's directly so you have to go to the link it self http://www.phonearena.com/news/First-Xperia-Z5-vs-iPhone-6-Plus-vs-S6-vs-Z3-vs-G4-camera-samples-comparison_id73408
The Z5 takes pretty awesome shots and its way better then the z3 camera. The colors look so much more correct and in some phones it beats the sgs6.
Edit:

the red on the iphone looks washed out or better said, the amount of light on the car is captured more on it. the z5 captures the real color from my perspective
In my opinion Z5 is better than Iphone 6+ and GS6, colors of the 2 is slightly saturated.
Regardless of color accuracy, the resolution increase still does not helps getting sharper images. There is too much noise reduction applied, especially compared to iPhone 6. Apple here does a decent job although I'd rather have much more noise and no NR applied in camera. Worst offender is LG, which applies an insane post-NR sharpening.
I think we should wait for production samples and hopefully some 3rd party app that can leverage better on this new sensor. Otherwise there is no real advantage against Samsung or Apple.
As for color accuracy, it really comes down to the app and how much processing is done. On my screen (which is calibrated, but it's not best quality panel) and to my eye Z5 has decent overall color rendition, but I prefer the G4 in the first picture (less punch but the overall colors are more accurate) and the iPhone in the third.
In the end, we are not yet at compact camera level - maybe next iteration (z6 or z7 or whatever they will call it). I'd really love to have an RX100 performance squeezed into a phone

Am I the only one seeing that low light photos look good on Note 5. Specially the example you gave, Note 5 has more details compared to Z5. Yea we all know that Samsung dose produce more warmer pics which makes the photo looks yellowish, but if you take a closer look the noise reduction is so aggressive in Z5.
View attachment 3476394
P.S: Ah no wonder you seem to mix up the two photos. Note 5 indeed do look better here.
Sony for some reason still cannot make a good camera. Note 5 does look much better in almost every situation.
Also look at the sky in that one pictre. Z5 completely burnt while Note 5 shows some nice detail

These pictures looks awesome. and yea it got lotta details too. We need further tests to see how it's done. Since they can always get it right with software.
New camera module absolutely promising. Specially colour accuracy.

Think its time you get some glasses bro. The first one and clearly the best low light photo is made with the Z5 not the note. Even if you zoom in on the billboard etc you see that the note blurs and has to much overexposed. But both are good camera's tho/.

WOW those pictures look indeed pretty awesome!!! But they are taken by a pro tho with a tripod.
I am a Sony Fan But i Must admit the samsung note 5 is killing sony camera what a poor detail in z5 i hope there is improvement in the last release
Yea Note 5 has a great camera indeed, but I am pretty sure this is related to Software, and eprice device doesn't have the latest camera UI that means it's not running on the latest build, so untill then we can't really say which is better.
But overall Sony has good colour accuracy when it's day-time, I hope it'll be fixed with updates. I really want is more control over the camera such as Manual shutter speed and raw. Hope to see more improvement before the phone's released.

Specially when it comes to Camera software they don't seem to be doing great.
I am always surprised that despite making good cameras and selling camera parts to other phone manufacturers, Sony phones have the worse cameras in the mobile phone industry. The Z3 camera is terrible relative to Apples and Samsungs and their previous phones were even worse. Hopefully they finally fix it with the Z5.
Wow....

New camera performance, quality and flash brightness

Hi there,
So according to Sony the new camera is suppose to be something out of this world. but due to the horrible performance. I had my iphone 4's photos side by side with my z3c and I couldn't tell the difference for most. Therefore, I am very skeptical about what the new camera actually offers.
Another major issue for me was the flash on the phone. Since my first phone with a flash I found it very useful to have as a flash light. the Z3c however was a major disappointment in that area as my old iphone 4 outperforms it by far.
So what I'd like to see is a few photos from the z5c (night time aswell with flash).
Also, I'd like to hear your opinions regarding the new camera/flash and how well they performs

Dude, did you even search on google? Lots of samples pictures there. And yes its much better because the z3c camera is pretty ****.
But if you llke at them samsung note 5 pictures it will crap on the new Z5 phone.... just look at the samples http://www.eprice.com.tw/mobile/talk/4523/4953454/1/rv/sony-xperia-z5-compact-review/
Look at these camera samples:

in my opinion it looks so good. I think eprice had a pre-production model or something like this.
The images are so noisy, I wish someone did a one inch sensor, my 808 still takes way better pictures than all of these.

I think it's not better than the S6 but it's definetively a top 5 camera in my opinion.

If I compare a zoomed photo between the Z5 and the LG G4 or Samsung S6, I can see a poor quality coming from the Z5.
For instance, I'm talking about the 2nd sample from this link. Go to the chart called "Xperia Z5 vs Z3 vs 6 Plus vs S6 vs G4 indoor camera samples", then find the 2nd group of pictures. Double click on the candle with the label that says "REWINED" (in order to zoom the photo) and compare the quality between the Z5 and the G4/S6.

However, what If we use another camera, like "Google Camera"? I would love to see how the Z5 family work with that camera and know if the quality improves or dimish.

It looks very good, but there is blurring on the top left of every photo (top right in portrait) probably because of misaligned lens. Sony needs to fix their QC problems.
Everything else looks fantastic.

Thanks for that info!
The "Stock Camera" seems to be a bit better than the "Google camera".
However both cameras are nice for me.
There is one thing with the Google camera that i don't understand. The "Size".
If you compare the first sample, there is a big difference in the size (969KB vs 2,67MB).
P.S.: Did you try "HDR" (if available) in the Google Camera?

LG G6 users, is the camera a lot better than the Note 4?

Hi folks, heading out today to get an LG G6 to replace a Note 4. I've really enjoyed the note 4's camera, still takes excellent shots.
Is the LG G6 camera setup a whole lot better? A lot better? A bit better? l'm sure someone out there knows
Thanks for any comment... Cheers!:highfive:

I had the Note 4, which yes had a great camera, that being said, for me, the G6 is appreciably better IQ wise, especially in lower light, F1.8 really helps. See the attached photo at 1200 iso which I think is really impressive and way beyond what the Note 4 would have achieved IQ wise at 1200 iso. And another more normal photo with great detail. That's my 5 cents, hope it helps.

Very nice! I'm a sucker for flower and pet pictures- Love shooting 'em around the house :highfive:
These were from my old note 4, but will have the LG G6 tomorrow.
Caught me a bee at work in the first one. The closeup shot you got was really sharp and good looking.
I love it for the most part. The wide angle sucks if you're taking landscape shots. Stupidly panorama can't be done with the camera IMO the correct orientation. It has to be held up and down. Can't hold phone side ways. That's my only gripe honestly.
With a clip on macro lens
the wide angle is actually fine, one must remember its getting almost double the scene with the same 13 mp hence the photos looking softer (less detail), take your P&S camera and take a photo at 45/50mm and then zoom out to 24mm while standing at the same place and take another photo then look at each at 100% you'll see exactly the same thing, same amount of megapixels covering a lot more info...
Hi
I got a new LG G 6 4 days back.
The picture quality is pathetic. Its blurry and pixelated 99.99% pictures clicked in all conditions are going wrong, day light, artificial, auto manual, dual cam, single cam.
any idea what is wrong.
I have read many reviews and videos and am sure that pic quality is bound to be better but unable to figure out.

There is something wrong with your G6 if that is the case.

Currntly using PIXEL XL and iphone 6s.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Sony Xperia XZ2 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

Gcam is not working on xperia devices as it is not camera2api compatible. Here is a good comparison video with OnePlus 6 and you can find many more comparisons of xz2 on this channel. Enjoy!
I got GCam working for my XZ2, without root. But I forgot where to download it. The link is somewhere in XZ2 compact's thread.
Back-lit mode, hdr auto and hdr+ (gcam)
Hello, since XZ2 doesn't have an auto HDR feature as some other manufacturers (name samsung, HTC, LG,...) I am wondering how superior auto is doing in back-lit scenes? Does the back-lit scene in intelligent auto makes it for the exclusion of a force (auto) HDR option? I have a Z5 compact now and its dynamic range is pretty poor. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
My XZ2 always recognises backlit scenes as Landscape or Backlight but the result is great, I have a sample but I really can't upload it because of how big the size of the pictures.

If i'm not mistaken, when a backlit / landscape icon appear in Superior Auto, auto HDR will be triggered. At least thats what happens in previous Xperia phone. So it does have the auto HDR features.

Which previous Xperia do you mean?
Because on my Z5 compact I don't think that's the case.. The Z5 series camera didn't have a good reputation anyway, but I especially noticed a huge gap to the best ones in unevenly lit scenes.. With the backlit situations, it depends where your focus is - if you want defined clouds and sunset on your photo, then the foreground is gonna be too dark, or properly exposed foreground is gonna lead to overblown highlights (white sky without clouds). As far as I saw, XZ2 also suffers in highly uneven outdoor scenarios, and has IMO worse dynamic range than on Google or HTC.
LG and apple for example show when the HDR is triggered automatically when shooting in auto mode, in real time before taking a photo, and I think Sony should do it too if they offer auto HDR.
IMX 400 is hardwerwise definitely able to do so... If it can shoot moving objects before you press shutter button (predictive capture) then they could also do multiple-frame exposures in real time before taking a photo IMO.. Which maybe they do, I REALLY hope so.
However, sometimes I prefer less dynamic range and higher contrasts.. Pixel 2's or U12+'s photos sometimes have too little contrast for me due to bringing down highlights and/or boosting shadows too much.. At the end it's a trade off nevertheless I think every phone should have had an auto HDR these days.
I realized that the zoom is not just a crop of the original photo, it has a process to soften the image.
I leave an example.
Original, crop and 8x zoom.
