What Does Rooting break and how to repair?

Hi, I'm about to root my n910f 4.4.4 btu but I just need to know what the root "breaks".
I already know S Health is one of the things which stop working but what else (if anything)
Next question, how do you "fix" the apps so they work again while the phone is rooted?

S Health works perfectly fine after rooting. The only thing that it breaks is Knox (you won't ever be able to use knox anymore).

Shealth works of cours it breaks 2 things warranty XD and OTA ...well Knox works for me I rooted via towel root ....u can still get updates by disabling root temporary by using app on play store like root triangle away or something like that...and when u go to download mod ur Knox will trip and u can't fix that ...it won't affect u by any mean ...

How on earth did you root via towelroot on a note4?

Eh!I did to my s4 d s5..for note 4 u got to wait anyway I gave answer according to ur question press thanks if it helped may be u can try mobogenie one click root...I m not sure about triping Knox....did u try towelroot on note 4 is it supported ? Get the app and check it out..

Everything works except knox wich for the vast majority is not a problem. Warranty is a question of luck, some repair centers doesn't care about knox triped but others refuse to repair in that condition.

Why would you even suggest towelroot on the note 4 forum? This is not S4 and it may cause bricks.

I rooted my first Note 4 and indeed after it was rooted S Health stopped working. Because the Note 4 had more issues I returned it to the shop and they exchanged it with a new one. My new Note 4 isn't rooted because of the S Health issue.

Dude, Root doesn't break S Health. I have it rooted since the fist day I owned it and tracks my fitness perfectly. Xposed is known to break S Health and Private mode but a Module fixes it. Right now I'm running the lastest Lollipop build and everything works perfectly fine.
The only thing that breaks is Knox. So if Samsung Pay comes to our device (right now is on S6) you couldnt use it as it requires a non triggered Knox. But, In my country, i doubt Samsung/Apple/Android pay will come to my near market.

S Health working fine on my rooted Note 4 too.

Root does NOT break S-Health. Something else did that, 100% sure. Most prolly Xposed or system bug. S-Health & Private Mode should work rooted for 99.99% of the time. the other times it's just individual phones thats the cause

You loose Knox which is a very handy feature if you like to have multiple identities / accounts (facebook, instagram etc) Or if you have multiple relations with girlfriends (no spying woman) and you also loose payments with fingerprint verification (FIDO) Actually you loose anything that uses the FIDO API This is not fixable anymore when rooted

Is there way to root S7 Edge with out loosing warranty? I tried to google it but didnt find any methods that are safe. By safe I mean something that does not remove warranty.

Currently there is no guaranteed way to root without losing warranty. There maybe a work around by doing systemless root but that is still in the beta stage and may not be perfected for a while.

There are countless threads regarding this issue. There is no way to root the Exynos S7 (Edge) without tripping Knox, thus warranty. Systemless root will NEVER root a Samsung without tripping Knox. Systemless root modifies the kernel to achieve root. This will ALWAYS trigger the Knox counter. Flashing modified image = tripping Knox.

Even flashing a custom recovery kills the warranty unfortunately . Anything without Samsung Signature or with modified code, will break the warranty. And Samsung Signature will be ignored after knox has been set to 0x1, this way Your phone won't reset itself after flashing official rom.

Sort answer: No

I was wondering how tripping warranty works? Does it send something to Samsung servers? I was just wondering if it would be possible to add something in hosts file to prevent it from happening?
Or does anyone know the location of binary that check for signature? In that case one could just modify that binary to accept everything.
The reason I got interested in rooting is that I have some bloatware that I cant uninstall. Forexample some yahoo thing that consumed 12 MB of datatransfer. There is no way to take away it's permission, and there is no uninstall option and when I try to remove it with adb shell (using rm command in /system/app for that) it says file system is readonly.

There is no way to disable it I'll tried some uninstaller app and it did not manage to kill it..

Both are working fine, but you can't delete it without root, just disable.

I love how Samsung have become everything I hated about Apple. I own an S7 Edge and I'm half considering selling it for a Xiaomi. I get equal warranty with a Xiaomi, but I can get the phone for like £100.

Seems to be confusion between tripping Knox and warranty here. You can't "trip warranty". In some countries, tripping Knox voids your warranty, but not all. I had my Edge+ fixed twice under warranty, no problem - informed the dealer that I'd removed Knox 30 minutes after purchase, they said it was fine. Same with my son's Note 3.
Unfortunately the only way to be sure is flash a recovery and/or root, bork your phone, and see what happens?

I had few questions raising in my mind:
1) Will ripping warranty also disable software updates?
2) How important is warranty for S7 Edge? Does this phone break easily? My friend told me that Samsung phones will have all kinds of defects and that I am very likely to need warranty, but what about S7 Edge? What's the chances that I need warranty in 2 years given that the phone was brand new when I brought it few months ago?

1) Rooting will break OTA update, so you will have to update software by flashing it manually (which is easy, but still)
2) You can never know. Had a Note 4, thought it would never fail, in the end it did and I needed warranty. That's why I am staying away from it on my S7 edge, too expensive in case of failure. And in my country they're strict with Knox

How do I get to know which countries are strict with Knox and which are not? So after rooting I get no updates at all or it only means I wont get automatically android 7 when Samsung decides to release it?
Isn't there way that I write something smart in hosts file and then Samsung wont get notified?

Unnecessary, Samsung doesn't get notified online or over the Internet from your device

From my experience and hearing from users around the world, central and southern Europe seem to be very strict regarding warranty and tripped Knox. Some countries in eastern Europe, northern Europe are less strict about it.
The Arab peninsula doesn't seem to care at all about Knox and warranty. Don't know much about African countries. Heard users saying they do and don't care about a tripped Knox. Never heard about issues from the United States about warranty and tripped Knox.
Feel free to correct me.

1) Does it only mean no updates for samsung software or no update at all? I mean would it also breaks updates for lets say firefox or vlc or termux (which are not shipped by samsung)?
What do you mean by "flashing it manually" Like manually reinsali firefox when I want newer version of it? Or that I only have to flash manually when I want to update OS?

What are side effects of tripping knox besides loosing warranty? Will i loose any features?

Knox apps destroyed

Hi just got my s8 plus and I'm just wondering I want to root and been searching around about what tripping knox brakes but keep getting mixed views
I will be rooting and flashing a custom Rom and kernel would someone be kind enough to list every app that get broken and is not fixed even by a custom Rom or kernel (like iris scanner,s Health, ect)
As I really want to root but don't want to damage too many apps in the process

No unfortunately not, Knox is a fuse on the motherboard. Once tripped it burns. So far only way to get Knox back would be to change the motherboard

Yes but the apps and system dont read the statuts directly from the bootloader but from the kernel, this is why there is a kernel that has faked 0x0 knox, but the fuse is still blown yes.

You can use terminal to change Knox to 0x0 but still. S health will work and some apps, but not secure folder or Samsung pay

so, knox tripped and rooted on stock unmodified rom :
safety net fail : (no apps like samsung pay, Pokemon go, Mario run, snapchat login ,etc)
no system updates
samsung apps won't work : samsung pass, samsung pay, Shealth, secure folder, issue with private mode on samsung internet,
if you use a custom rom most of stuff CAN be fixed like
safety net pass with magisk hide (root)
s health work
private mode on internet
BUT some are permanent and can't be fixed even with custom rom so once rooted , no way back except buy new phone

Remember that once you are rooted and knox counter is tripped (0x1), its irreversible and can't be "unrooted" or be official and reset knox counter even by flashing stock firmware though odin because since galaxy s7 the knox counter is not software related but its hardware. its an electronic fuse and if you root or install custom recovery etc the electronic fuse will broke and broken fuse mean tripped knox counter. this is because even flashing stock firmware is useless, as most of Samsung apps knox related don't only check root but also the knox counter, so unroot won't help. so think twice before rooting your device

Type that in terminal. It will make Knox show 0x0 on device ONLY. Download mode will still show as 0x1.

its useless, Samsung knox apps dont check if they see 0x0 but it just put some electricity though the knox fuse and if it get though it its ok but if the electricity dont success to get through the fuse it mean its broken so I mean knox is 0x1 and rooted.
fake knox counter is useless as every knox eligibility checks are hardware and not software. fake 0x0 is only for you ^^to reset the counter only way is the replace the motherboard, even Samsung can't reset it

There has to be some hardware abstraction layer, you can't just test the fuse each time, that would mean that the apps have really low level rights/api to do so wich is risky. The bootloader tests the fuse and writes the value to the kernel, wich can be faked to make some apps work.
If the value is checked by apps then there is a software value other than the hardware status.
But dont quote me on that.
For apps that dont work i think there is some selinux policies issues or root gets detected.
Why would devs include the fake 0x0 counter if it was useless ?

darn making me think twice about rooting now i mainly want it for debloating,apps ad blocking,viper4android,and a few mods like stereo speaker and camera mod
also the youtube mod which allows us to stream 4k (i know we only have 2k display) but i still like to stream in 4k

I have rooted for the exact reasons you stated above. Wouldn't go back even if I could. Using the terminal code I posted allows you to use some apps that rely on 0x0. Samsung health is one of them as I use it every day.

to be honest ive rooted every device ive had dating back to the htc hd2 lol
that's why i sent the xperia xz premium back was due to locked bootloader which looks near impossible to root
ill properly root i just didn't want to destroy any apps which made any hardware not work properly but if everything works (apart from samsung pay and secure folder) which i don't use both then should be worth the trip lol :silly:

And also I can confirm Samsung pass doesn't work also. However I never use it so that doesn't bother me. To be honest I would root just for viper4android. And I use android pay instead of Samsung pay which also works perfect

Still haven't rooted yet darn cart make my mind up I've rooted every phone I've had and it's the first thing I normally do :silly:
Does anyone think there will be more knox apps coming out which if knox is tripped we will be missing out on
Or what if Samsung make a few more apps go through knox like s health or iris scanner then we would be stuck then lol

I don't think they will release anything else knox related. At least not for the s8 anyway
S health and iris scanner work perfect now after root, they won't implement them into knox status don't worry.

Thanks I'm going to have to root I miss it too much I've given it 3 weeks and I've never used secure folder or Samsung pass so I won't miss them and Samsung pay although i haven't used I will miss lol

I had to root for viper4android amd I'm not running renovate ROM and it so much better than stock.
In my opinion android pay is better and it's supported in many places. But that's my opinion.
If you root I recommend rooting with magisk. So you can use magisk hide and modules. Good luck and post here if you need any help :good:

How to make Samsung Pay work after root then go back to stock?

i have previously rooted my S7 Edge, but I am now looking to sell it, so I already put it back to factory settings and stock rom, Now when I try to open Samsung pay it says unauthorized modifications have been made to my device so it cant use Samsung pay. Is there a way to fix this and keep the phone on a stock rom?

No currently known method. You have irreversibly tripped your Knox e fuse by rooting it. Rendering Samsung pay permanently disabled.
Maybe you can sell it as rooted? Not sure how the second hand market for phones work, but maybe more desirable to some?

I won't ever use Samsung Pay. But Samsung's ridiculous insistence of permanently marking a phone that has had any form of customisation (remember, more than just rooting trips Knox) and then disabling a service they offer as a result, even if you take that phone completely back to stock, is precisely why my S7E is the last from them I'll buy.

i thought if you just reflash it with the original firmware through odin, you'll be able to use it back. I did it with my rooted verizon s7edge, then reflash it with u firmware and i can just use samsung pay normally.

You're mistaken. If you rooted your phone, you tripped Knox, which on this architecture is an efuse that you can't rectify. This will stop Samsung Pay working indefinitely no matter what ROM you run, stock or otherwise.

then my phone, however unlikely it seemed, must have not understood it correctly that it must function that way. Because between august and now, I rooted my G935V, then I reflash G935U firmware through ODIN and rooted the phone again, and I ended up going back to using it without root. I still can use samsung pay in the device. Swearsies realsies. Although I dont have that level of faith and certainty to break knox in my G955U.

As far as I know, there are root methods that does not trip Knox eFuse, what, for sure, will trip Knox eFuse is installing unofficial ROMs.

True. I did the same.The first thing i did was root my S7 edge. But i didnt like it (too much lag) and went back to stock(odin).After that,everything is working Including Samsung Pay.I dont know why people are saying that you cant use Samsung Pay after odin the stock firmware.

If I have to guess, this may have something to do with SD vs Exynos, because my snapdragon Verizon s7edge able to use spay after reflashing it to U firmware via ODIN. However, when I re-flash my s8 exynos with odin to some unlocked firmware, it recognize that I have tripped knox and voided my warranty. Although this one had TWRP and unlocked bootloader.

I just rooted my s7 Edge SM-G935F to load the Oreo Rom posted this week. After getting the poor Wifi I re-flashed it back to stock and was surprised (yes I know - I should have read first) that S-Health and Samsung Pay refused to work.
Bit of a pain as I have a Gear S3 also, which has lost functionality.
But, I have reflashed several times since, trying to get everything back to stock, including restoring from a Samsung Switch backup.
I have no idea what I did, but after one of the flash processes, Samsung Pay started working fine - I added my cards etc. no problem. As S-Health wasnt working, I tried to edit the system files to fix that...
And ended up doing another flash and Samsung Pay is broken again.
So there is something that allows Samsung Pay to work after Knox has been tripped. Unfortunately, I cannot replicate it again, so it may just be a random bug.

Once you modify your S7 Edge and trigger knox you cannot use Samsung Pay again, even if you re-flash stock firmware. But S Health you can but you have to flash Marshmallow 6.0 firmware and set your phone up from start and update all your apps and then open S Health and set it all up. Then just go to software update settings OTA ( Over the Air ) and update your phone to the latest firmware Nougat 7.0 and when your phone restarts after updating automatically go to S Health and it'll work. There may be a simpler way of doing it but thats how I did it after stupidly rooting my S7 Edge SM-G935F Exynos European unlocked BTU firmware.

You can use shealth by just editing a line in build.prop but not samsung pay.

i try any way for worked s-health but heartrate sensor dont work any more after rooting...how can fix this sensor worked again ?

But does not work at all? I would like to root my Exynos S8 but I like the loyalty card feature because the ability to use it even in old barcode scanners, I can't find any other app that can use the IR blaster for doing that.
It's the only feature that I wouldn't want to lose... As I pay with my bank app that can work with Magisk Hide.

this is incorrect. i have a galaxy A8 (2018) and i tripped knox on it about 5 months ago and have not been able to use samsung health, but have used samsung pay just fine. I got tired of the inability to use sammy health and decided to flash twrp and magisk to block ads (since i wasnt getting the benefit of not being rooted) and lost use of samsung pay. I am going to do the process mentioned below and see what it yields.

i hope this is the fly in the ointment. Knox isnt the issue, its something else that has yet to be discovered. As stated above, my knox has been tripped for quite some time and sammy pay worked without issue. My issue only surfaced after flashing twrp and magisk

following up on the issue of tripping knox causing samsung pay to not work. Ive been back on stock firmware, unrooted with knox DEFINITELY tripped for the last few weeks, and i can happily report that it works fine both on the phone and my Gear S3 Frontier. Knox is NOT the culprit

Pay doesn't work on my S8+ G955F Pie beta 4 with tripped knox. It says that the service is unavailable and I must reboot my phone...

pie beta 4. hmmmm. how did you get this ROM on your phone? if youre rooted, then no SPay for you. You can restore the functionality of SPay by downloading the stock firmware from sammobile.com and flashing it via Odin

I downloaded the Pie rom from the XDA forum and flashed it with SD Card. I'm not rooted but have a tripped knox, so I think no SPay for me. I already downloaded the stock firmware from sammobile, but I had the same issue.

Samsung Pass question

Hello guys, I have a question.. I am thinking about finally installing a custom rom on my S8.. The thing is that I like and need this Samsung Pass very much but as far as I know when you root your phone, you lose Knox so you lose Samsung Pass.. Is there a workaround or another app that could work like this.. I enjoy the password fill with just my fingerprint..

There is no fix for Samsung pass as far as I know, and once you install a custom ROM, Odin will always be 0x1, which means Samsung pass will never work again.

You can reset knox back to 0x0 but only on software level. This allows some apps like Samsung health to work. However I'm not 100% sure if it enables Samsung Pass to work.
