I know this used to work before the 4.5.3 update, but now I'm not able to ping anything from adb shell or launching terminal app.
I also can't use vpncilla, but I think it's related as it gives me a network unreachable error too

The ping command works fine for me with ConnectBot local connection.
I'm on the latest 4.5.3.

Oh, I had mobile data disabled - I am practically in a dead zone.
Carrier is TMobile. On LTE, ping isn't working - same error as you're getting. Interestingly, ping6 works fine. Perhaps the network is blocking ipv4 icmp packets?
i believe that is the issue. i just tested from home too. and it looks like vpncilla only supports ipv4 sadly

I have my htc setup to both internet sharing and Wi-Fi connection on my work PC with a lan connection. On both of these connections e.g. wired USB and wireless i can get the internet for about 3 minutes then it stops working. Is there some sort of block? I did see a while back that the WiFi app has no restrictions...
Any help would be superb.

Thats a little odd, there is certainly no block and I have had the wifi router running for a good 30-40 minutes without failing.
what part is failing, is the phone no longer running the wifi router, or is the pc no longer getting internet on that network connection?
If you need help on how to find this info just reply and I can walk you through some more diagnostic steps.
The phone is still running just the internet stops on the machine. I have to stop the wi fi on the phone then start again then connect. I think it might be t-mobile but the internet on the phone is fine
are you in the uk?
if you connect your laptop to the phone via the wifi router you should be able to right click the network logo, click on status and view the wifi network info, it should tell you in there if it has internet access on that network connection.
If you try this again and when it fails check this status window and see if windows is seeing an internet connection or not?
when the net fails again try and visit http://72.14.203.100/ (this should be the google homepage) if you see google then there is a dns problem if it still says network timeout or failed to connect or something like that then we will have to dig further.
LOL thanks for your help. I am in the UK. ive been working in IT for the last 12 years and I know and have done the test, its not the machine it has something to do with the phone or t-mobile network
Sorry to hijack your thread a little, but I'm on the T-Mobile Network in the UK too (except I'm using a Touch Pro with a custom ROM), and although I can make connections from the PC to websites using the IP address, the DNS isn't working so I can't resolve domain names.
Any ideas?

It must be the phone then since I do use wifi router, I am on t-mobile and in the UK and I do not experience this :S
I seem to be saying this more and more but maybe you should try a hard reset and see if that fixes the problem?

This is likely an issue with the way your machine has been setup to connect to the wifi network. Try visting the properties of the network and vieing the dns settings for the tcp/ipv4, It should be set as Obtain DNS server addresses automatically. If it is set like this then try setting it too 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 these are googles, dns servers if this works for you then you could stick with this or do some further digging as to why you are not getting the dns server addresses automatically like you should be.

Setting the DNS entries to Google's makes it work, but attempting to get the DNS Server's automatically leaves me with no ability to resolve domain names. How strange?

I am new to this wifi router thing and got the following questions:
1. To be able to use it, you must have data connection with your provider. Am I right?
2. By any chance, can I use this system by using a sim taken out of a prepaid mobile broadband dongle and inserted into my device (htc touch HD)?
3. Once I get connected can I surf the internet/check emails etc from within the device itself without the need to use a laptop?
Please don't mind these basic stupid questions.

This happens on my Thunderbolt, Transformer, and on my wife's iPhone. Stock roms and custom roms, it doesn't matter. Once I put the device back on the cellular network (I tether the Transformer)the services are able to connect. This issue occurs in the official Google apps as well as the web browser.
My home network is powered by a D-Link DIR 825, DNS points to the router @192.168.0.1
The router is able to resolve youtube.com and other google services.
Windows PC's are able to access affected services.
For some reason when I'm on my Android devices they don't play well on my WiFi network. I had the same issue occur with my MBP 2011 model. My solution was to force google dns server.
Unfortunately my D-Link doesn't give me the option to manually configure the DNS server being sent through DHCP. So I can't force just the DNS server on the Android / iOS devices. Any idea's or thoughts on what's going on?
Again, I can ping youtube.com from the router and below is more info on my ISP.

Again, once devices are moved to the mobile network I have no issues. WiFi at my work works just fine during the day for my Android devices. I have cleared data / cache for the browser and youtube apps in Android.

You say the devices work fine at work, di you have to set a static IP address for them at work?
If yes, then have you made sure to switch back to DHCP when you are at work? (assuming your home network runs DHCP?)

No, I dont run static IP's at work.
I'm the network administrator and manage the wireless network at work so thankfully I have control over the design and layout of our wireless networks.
The network consists of Cisco serise WLC 5500 with Cisco 1141 AP's. The wireless network is a WPA2 Enterprise network.
DNS is handled by our AD server.
I almost questioned my home ISP DNS but if the router can resolve the IP then it should be able to resolve for any host requesting that information. I'm wondering if these Unix like devices (Android, iOS, OS X) are trying to resolve or handle the resolution process differently.
Again, Windows resolves the domain just fine. I may check configurations files to see the order of name resolution.

I ran a packet capture from the tablet and every time it tries to resolve the name the tablet receives a Reset response.

I'm even more pissed...aparently I can resolve the name if I do a ping youtube.com in the terminal emulator. I can't access the app or website however...but it works on PC's.
I'm wondering if it's outdated firmware on my router. Unfortunately this piece of $hi7 D-Link refuses to accept the upgraded firmware.
Performed a factory reset on the router.
Setup a quick and dirty wireless network and still couldn't access google services from it.
I attempted to upgrade the firmware again with the system freshly reset and it was still a no go. I'm thinking of ditching this POS router.
This may be a long shot but can you try setting your router ip as 192 168 0 1, then your phone as 192 168 0 2. Mine had troubles on higher ip ranges

I did a packet capture from the phone and tablet and this is what I see.
Packet 15 - DNS query for youtube.com
Packet 16 - DNS response with the IP address
Packet 17 - A TCP Packet is sent to the router on port 53
Packet 18 - A TCP Packet is received with the [RST, ACK] flag set.
Then I see this pattern as I was hitting refresh over and over. The connection is getting reset for some reason.
Reading D-Link forums it appears that some people have issues with this router "blocking" some websites. I think it's simply an issue of $hi77y firmware and unfortunately I can't upgrade it. I've verified my downloads, followed the directions to the T, but it will not accept the firmware.
Well I upgraded to a Linksys E2000 with DD-WRT firmware and everything works fine

I have a problem with mobile internet connection I am living in london i have o2 SIMcard top up not contract. if i try to use goggle map or internet browser during walking on the street or wherever there is no WIFI it shuld be connect by o2 internet. I have the all rounder bolt on wich includes 500MB data traffic per month. I have been at the o2 branch they have checked my balance is all right. Anyway if i try to connect i have got message: „Network failure This application requires a working data connection.” They have trying with an other o2 SIM card it was working fine so they was changing my SIM card to a brand new but i have the same problem still. I was trying every settings on my phone i have HD2_NDT_MIUI_DEVELOPMENT_V19.1_Multilang_MAGLDR on there.
My phone is an HTC HD2 factory unlocked

I have successfully flashed sprint galaxy s3 & HTC evo 4g to our CDMA network (I am outside USA) , Now i have flashed Sprint galaxy S4 & voice and mms working but 3g data connection unstable (i should reboot to get 3g again and drop after some mintutes) ,Since I am outside USA I figured out that the gateway ip prevent my device to continue using 3g data connection since it's related to sprint network ,
from ##data# > View> Others > Browser >Gateway ip : 28,68.31.1 Port:80 Secure Port:80
How I can change this gateway ip address ?
I have tried the following with adb

No such Proccess
& the gateway address did not changed

I have three Android devices and two laptops, all of which I have been using on my home wifi network for years with only minor issues now and again. All of which I have been able to resolve. Two of the Android devices are phones and are rooted with custom roms and one is an unrooted Nexus 7.
Sunday, the 6th of April (yesterday) all 3 of the Android devices lost internet connectivity spontaneously but both laptops still access the internet with no problems over wifi. I was not doing anything with the network or any of the 3 devices. The Android devices all still connect to the wifi and they can all access all the other devices on the home network. I can ping my phone from my laptop and I can ping my laptop from the phone. I can access the files on my phone using AirDroid. I have reset every device on the network including the wifi access point and the cable modem. I called my ISP and they are saying that it might be due to the fact that my cable modem has reached "End of Life" and does not support newer Docsis 3.0 technology which for some reason now precludes Android devices from accessing the internet. I don't buy it. I read up briefly on Docsis 3.0 and it is supposed to be backward compatible with Docsis 1.0 and 2.0. I have not had a chance to see if my phone or the other devices will connect to the internet through other wifi networks but I suspect they will. My phone does connect through the 3g network.
Anybody having this issue and if so have you found a fix? My only solution at this point is to buy a newer cable modem that supports Docsis 3.0. It's not all that expensive but I don't want to buy one if I can't confirm that is the problem. The one I have seems to be working fine with the laptops and was working fine with the Android devices before it quit working. If that is the problem.
If anybody has any suggestions as to how I might test this I would be grateful.
Do you have a terminal app? Start pinging your router then 8.8.8.8. Then if you can ping Google, then it is something else.

Dude, you nailed it. I pinged google and that didn't work and when I pinged the IP it worked. I also was able to ping that 8.8.8.8 ip. I knew then it had to be a DNS issue.
I then set my IP on the phone to static and then I used the Google dns server IPs 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as my DNS servers and Bingo, it worked. Why was it working before? What changed overnight? And why did it occur to all three Android devices at the same time. Up until now I had been using DHCP and everything worked fine. I even went for a walk around the block and found a couple of unsecured wifi networks and connected to them and subsequently the internet. But when I got home and connected to my network, no joy. However, as stated in the OP, our wireless laptops work just fine. Maybe Comcast is sending out the wrong DNS IP or they just somehow no longer support Android???

My laptop connects to wifi and my desktop, ps3, and TV via Ethernet but all of a sudden about an hour ago my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 can no longer access the internet. They are connected to the network however the signal indicators in the quick settings is orange and I can't access the internet.
Could you tell me exactly what you did to fix this as I am not good with networking type stuff at all...you mention pinging and DNS servers and I have no clue what you're talking about.
BTW I have AT&T U-Verse.

I don't know what AT&T U-Verse is but the problem I had was that for some reason my Android devices would no longer access anything outside my home network. I used a terminal app that I have on my phone and I was able to ping 8.8.8.8 which I understand is one of Google's DNS servers. DNS stands for (Domain Name Service) which allows us humans to type in meaningful names in a browser rather than the IP address. If you can enter this http://74.125.224.72/ into your browser on your Android device you should get to Google. If that works then you need to point your device to a DNS other than the one assigned by your ISP. I just used 8.8.8.8 and that solved my problem. You can also change the DNS server in your gateway device, whatever it happens to be, and that would fix the problem as well. That is assuming you can reach Google using the IP address I have mentioned previously.
There should be all sorts of tutorials and suggestions regarding how you can make the necessary changes. It all depends on your device and network appliances.

I'm on T-Mobile network, it works flawlessly in my S8+. But when I used it to my 1+5 I get network errors in my games and some social media apps too. I tried making another apn. The results are still the same. ?
Hi, I was looking for a post that can be related with my issues. You have this issue only with Cellular DATA? My issues is that some APPS don't detect a network connection. The built-in VPN is one of them and the other one is CSIP, my VOIP client. See if you can configure a VPN connection on your phone, it doesn't matter the server or credentials. If you have the same issue it won't even try to connect. All my APPs work fine on Wifi, it is just on Cell DATA where I experience this issue.
Try setting APN Protocol to IPv4 or IPv4/IPv6. See if that helps. You may need to create a new APN setting.

I did exactly what you said and it works. The problem is the the APN automatically assigned has APN protocol on IPV6. I checked another T-Mobile SIM on a OP2 and it has many more APN options than my OP5. And the one my OP5 uses with IPV6 the OP2 has it IPV4/IPV6. Thank you so much for the info.
