The only Wi-Fi direct android phone that's ever worked for me have been my Samsung's.
Nexus 6p, pixel xl, oneplus 3 and 5, zte axon 7, and umi super have not been able to send or receive on stock firmware or custom roms.
Every Samsung device I've owned can send via Wi-Fi direct to other Samsung devices on touchwiz no problem.
Except touchwiz.
Would be awesome if anyone found a solution.. Because going back to Samsung is not xD

Received and send files yesterday over wifi direct with the app "send anywhere" works without a problem.

I use FolderSync for scheduled WiFi file xfers and ES File Manger Pro for WiFi file exchanges with my PC all the time both work perfectly.

T-Mobile USA blocking wifi hotspot

Been using my Google provided wifi hotspot feature since the n1 including up until about an hour ago when I got the pleasant message on my laptop screen that in order to use my phone as a hotspots I need to pay T-Mobile $15 per month. Anyone else have this happen and are there any known workarounds? Running bugless beast pixel edition.

How long were you using your hot spot? I quickly browsed a bit on my tablet to see if I'd get a message but didn't. I'm running CM9 on my phone.

From reading the article, I wasn't sure if it would affect all users or just HTC Amaze 4G owners.

There is a similar post in the HTC One S forum with a fix. Just added a new APN with nothing but epc.tmobile.com in the config and it seems to have fixed the problem......for now anyway.
Just got throttled again with the new apn settings. Looks like it may be time for a clear card.

Change the name of your wifi hotspot and it should fix it. Worked for me when I got that message.

damn a day late. Called Tmobile and after talking with customer loyalty just ended up paying for it. They did however give it to me for $10 instead of $15 and didn't make me extend my contract. I will probably end up getting a clear card for internet now and calling them back to cancel the hotspot feature. Good to know about your fix though.
happened to me too, running stock rom, i'll try the name change method later

I did this:
1) settings
2) Wireless & Networks
3)Portable Wi-fi hotspot settings
4) Where is says Router name (SSID): I change the original name.
I did not work.
Is that what you meant when you say Change the name of your wifi h.s.? If not I could use a little help. Thanks
Well its now happened to me.
I'm running Mark V ICS ROM with CM9 and used Barnacle... was tethering my laptop then all the sudden I got the txt from T-Mo about adding or be blocked... so I scrambled and try to find device manager to freeze it...buy can't find it anywhere. Now I got a message saying my tethering is blocked.
Does anyone know what system app or process is reporting? Like I said...I froze device manager in other phones and it worked...just can't find it on this one

changing your settings won't help to work around throttling.
apparently you need to stop using chrome as your browser.
I read somewhere also, that tmobile can't tell you are tethering if you are on a mac.
EDIT
{Seems that it is false that tmobile can tell if you are on a mac, but it does appear to be true that tmobile can tell when you tether if you use the wrong browser in the device you are tethering to. So it doesn't matter if you change your settings or you get a different tethering app - just use a safe browser}

Still no work around? Its not about the throttling... its about using the hotspots feature and the data we already pay for and something built in ad a feature of the phone.

it seems that T-Mobile has blocked the use of wifi hotspot
try another app here (via USB)

I just got the tethering block after I installed Google Chrome on my laptop which was weird so I went back to using internet explorer and I'm not blocked. I gave the Galaxy Nexus running stock 4.0.4.
I'm using AOKP ROM Build 37. I just tethered Wifi Hotspot to my A100 tablet, it's accessing the internet just fine using Boat Browser. Other apps connecting to the internet just fine too. Wonder if only the stock "T-Mobile" ROMs that have the tethering blocked.
I personally think it's unethical for carriers/providers to charge extra for mobile hotspot. After all I'm paying the 2GB or 3GB or 5GB so I should be able to use it.. Hope for a class action suit against the carriers for such unethical practice to gouch more money from the consumers..
Edited: I use ROM Toolbox and change the DNS on the tablet to Google DNS for it to work. The default DNS did not work.
Use Safari in Mac
I am using Nexis One for more than two years and yesterday I go the t-mobile hotspot message. I initially thought maybe I am over 1GB and they are doing this. After reading this thread, I changed the SSID and tried with Chrome on MAC and I still had the error. I tried with Safari on MAC and I can use the hotspot. I am writing this using Nexus one hotspot with Safari on Mac.
I was pretty pissed when I noticed that they did this yesterday with my G2. C'mon T-Mobile, this is an old phone that isn't going to get the bells and whistles of ICS. At least you can let us have this! I'm running stock but am now considering moving to CM7. Does anyone know if WiFi hotspot works, with chrome, using CM7 on t-mobile?
I'm also wondering if it has anything to do with the browser agent. In remember being able to change a browser agent with desktop chrome and Firefox through an addon. Does anyone know how to do that with tablet chrome? I only know how to switch between mobile and desktop but that doesn't appear to make a difference
Well..I got hit about a week ago and was blocked..funny thing...I flashed a new ROM and when I tried it again..I used internet explorer...was blocked....then I tried FireFox and boom. I'm back on
Running a week now on new ROM and using hotspots tethering for my laptop and my wife's iphone. Kids iPod and daughters iphone and still running strong
Odd isn't it?

Every browser except chrome are working for me on stock. Have you been able to run ICS on something connected to your t-mobile phone, via WiFi hotspot, and use chrome to browse the web? I'm trying to see if a custom ROM restores this capability
I run ICS..but I don't use Chrome
On a side note..I was also running another ICS custom ROM with different kernel when I initially got blocked.

User certificate bug?

So I bought my nexus last Thursday at my local Office Depot. Since then I've had the worst time trying to connect it to my college's wifi. They have an instructions wifi where you download your personal certificate to connect. It worked with my old Xoom but wouldn't connect for the life of me..
So today I decided to visit the infamous tech department where they struggled to find a solution. The leader came over and noticed it was a nexus. He said I wouldn't be able to connect because there is a bug in the software and I won't be able to connect until Google updates the software.
Can anyone else confirm this?
I'm tempted to leave stock and install a custom rom to see if it makes a difference.
So if anybody knows anything about this it would help me greatly and save my phones data connection from tethering.
Thanks in advance

Wi-Fi Direct with Beam

So I've really been enjoying my new nexus 4. But I've if the things that's bothered me the most is the poor implementation of beaming. For example when I try to beam a 30 second HD video I recorded on my nexus onto my brother's identical nexus 4, it starts up a Bluetooth connection. Am I missing something? I thought it was supposed to create a Wi-Fi direct connection between the two, which would been much much faster.

Bumping this.
How exactly do I use that app.. is it a necessity that both phones have to have the same app running? could someone please run me through the process? I need to transfer 100 mb files between my n4 and the gnex.
Took me a while but I finally got it too work. After adding the viewing device to the network I rebooted the source device (nexus 4). I was then able to see the target device from my Nexus 4. Then you send an invite from the nexus 4 to the source device. Accept and once connected you are golden. YouTube app ob nexus 4 actually then asks which device should display the video. I was also able to share media using BubbleUPnP. Hope that helps someone

You need to install Wi-Fi Direct on both devices. Make sure both have NFC on.
You can approach the problem in 2 ways (really only 1):
1) Link both phones to each other by directly accessing the app from the drawer first. Once a connection has been established, use your file explorer to locate the file (I use ES File Explorer) and long press it. You'll get a dialog box. Locate "Share" and then click on "Wi-Fi Direct". You'll notice it's sending when you see the Wi-Fi Direct icon in the notification bar.
2) The process is the reverse of 1; locate the file, long press and then Share > Wi-Fi Direct. It'll prompt you to establish a connection.
Speeds I've seen at most is 39Mbit between my GS3 and N4.
Be aware, certain devices don't like to accept invites. In this case it'll error out or not communicate with the other device. Send the invite from the other device instead. If it reaches this situation, the program may be buggy (both refuse to communicate with each other) until you force close the app using a task manager and disable/re-enable NFC.
An example...my GS3 doesn't like to accept invites from the N4 so I'm forced to send invites from the GS3 to the N4 instead.

Android Beaming is typically done using Bluetooth (for small files like pictures), hence why you see the Bluetooth icon pop up. I've sent files between my phones and thought it wasn't sending files. It's just ridiculously slow as is the nature of Bluetooth. Random tidbit here -- Samsung implemented their own Android Beaming protocol (S-Beam) to use Wi-Fi Direct instead of the Bluetooth connection.
Thanks a lot man! Got it working.. although having an app for it is still sort of clumsy. Wonder when google will finish up what is incomplete

Probably an issue with Whatsapp servers. If everything else is running fine then I wouldn't worry too much. Try to clear the cache in Settings>Apps>Whatsapp. If that doesn't fix it then its definitely on the Whatsapp server end.
Thx I'll tra asap

Oneplus 8 Pro Verizon Wireless WIFI Calling working yet?

Hey guys, I already returned my One plus 8 pro because of the advertised features that should work with Verizon. I had posted about the sms not working at first which I had to tag them on twitter and I got it resolved. I stayed with the phone as I loved the device really but I was really excited thinking that since the one plus 8 non pro would be sold by Verizon I would assume the 8 pro would also eventually work with Verizon Wireless. I have been on the phone with Tier 2 and Oneplus together one the phone trying to get it working. The one plus rep we were talking to said that it will work. However we never got it working. I would love to buy this phone again if someone can confirm they got the wifi calling working. I purchased the LG V60 again to hold off buying something else. I came from tmobile and this obviously wouldnt be a problem. But we all know how this goes.
No WiFi calling yet.

Can anyone else confirm that Wifi calling is working on Verizon pre-paid accounts?
Has anyone else been able to confirm that WiFi calling works on Verizon with the Oneplus 8 Pro? I'd much prefer that device over Verizon's locked 5G UW version of the 8, but I need to have WiFi calling. Thanks in advance.

The logkit setup absolutely does NOT work with the global OP8P and Verizon postpaid. It puts the options in the settings menu, but once you turn it on and back out then go back in it's back to off. Additionally, calls do not go over WiFi.
