[Q] Windows 7 fails to install MTP driver

I recieved my N4 yesterday.
When I try to connect it to my notebook (running Windows 7 Professional), the installation of the MTP driver fails. The error message says something like "driver could not be found". ADB however works without problems. (I allready debugged some apps on the phone.)
I tried installing the drivers from the toolkit, but it didn't work.
On my brothers netbook the MTP drivers were installed successfully. But I can't get it working on my notebook.
Can anyone help me?

I was just having this problem but I fixed mine by changing the USB port. Not sure if itll help but worth a try.

Thanks for your help. I allready tried an other usb port. It did'nt work.

I wanted to avoid it but I reinstalled windows. Now it works. Thanks again.

Hmm, messed with this problem for ages yesterday, mtp installed fine in normal mode but refused when in 'usb debugging' mode
simple fix, find your wpdmtp.inf file in windows/inf
edit it like shown, look for the [Generic.NTx86] and [Generic.NTamd64] entries near the top of the file........
[Generic.NTx86]
%GenericMTP.DeviceDesc%=MTP, USB\MS_COMP_MTP
%GenericMTP.DeviceDesc%=MTP, USB\VID_18D1&PID_4EE2&MI_00

...then update the driver in device manager, use automatic search
just make sure the 'VID_18D1&PID_4EE2&MI_00' matches your device id, check in device manager.. but i'm guessing all nexus 4 are the same.. usb debugging mode

I did a clean install of windows and that solved the issue for me. Thanksfor your help anyway.

I usually see what drivers do install, like adb or whatever, and then remove/uninstall them AND delete them

Just FYI, just got a Nexus 4 from T-Mobile yesterday and the device ID is slightly different:
VID_18D1&PID_4EE2&MI_01
01 at the end instead of 00

When Windows asks where the drivers are you point to the folder with the ones you want to use...

It doesn't ask. I plug in the phone, and Windows says it can't install the MTP driver.
If I go into Device Manager and find the phone (with the yellow triangle and !) and select Update Driver Software, then navigate to the i386 folder from the Universal Naked Driver (on an i5 system), it tells me that "The best driver for your device is already installed" or something similar.
Of course, if I uninstall the device from device manager (and presumably the bad MTP driver as well), it disappears, so I have nothing to point to to install the drivers.

Earlier today I reinstalled the drivers for my N4 on my work PC (Vista Business) and I had to reboot before it recognised the N4 as an MTP Device - prior to that it only saw it as an 'MTP Device'. Now it sees at 'Nexus 4'

Hi, i had the same problem described in previous posts and I managed to solve thanks to what is written by meangreenie.
In practice, in the windows\inf of my Windows 7 the file wpdmtp.inf was no longer present but there is only the "compiled" version (wpdmtp.pnf).
I retrieved the file from an earlier version founded in he folder Winsys and so the LG driver are installed without further problems.

That works for me with USB Debug ticked and in MTP Mode but not in PTP Mode (on CM10.2-nightly-20130817). I absolutely can't see my pics in no way... (I suppose this is a bug from Google to be fixed in further updates). ADB and FB are correctly working as tested with NexusRootToolkit 1.7.1 Drivers Test.
May it help to delete original DCIM folder and start from a new one??
edit: Shame on me... I forgot that I've formatted my SDcard, so I've no picture in DCIM folder.... Sorry! So I can say that McDougal trick totally worked for me!

try to check the device manager to check the missing drivers with ! mark

Finally a working solution
Finally I found a solution.
Visit answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-hardware/mtp-usb-device-drivers-will-not-install-correctly/0ee71b7c-4ae7-403f-abbb-63c7ed9a79f9?rtAction=1387606800207 and search for the "Bret B"'s answer which has also been marked as the most helpful answer. It works perfectly. He simply says..
Go to the Registry Editor (Start –> Run –>type in, “regedit” (without the quotes) then click OK.
Search the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\
Go upto Edit>Find, type in or copy/paste Portable Devices
In the right hand pane you will see the (Default) value “Portable Devices” on the string
Once found, you see a string value called UpperFilters –> delete it!
Reconnect the device. Finished!

Nexus 4 cannot be recognized as MTP after root

I'm running Windows 7 64bit and followed the Ultimate guide to unlock and root my Nexus 4.
Everything went well but now it looks like that Windows won't recognize my phone as a device. When I plug in the phone, the auto-play window will pop out and recognize it as Nexus 4, but there is no other options. (Normally the auto-play will ask if open folder to view files or transfer photos). I can't see my phone in device manager either.
If I turn on the USB debugging mode, I can see it in device manager but still cannot see it in My Computer. Looks like Windows can't access the SD card at all.
I tried switching to the camera mode but the problem remained. Please help.

Maybe it's a stupid advice, but have you tried change the USB port in PC?

Plug in the phone, uninstall the drivers from Device manager, then unplug, and replug.

thanks for your advice. the problem is that, without USB debugging mode on, I can't see Nexus 4 in Device manager, even though the Windows Auto-play will say Nexus 4 connected. (Nothing in My Computer either)
With USB debugging mode on, I uninstalled the driver and Windows would try installing the driver. Now it shows up as MTP device with an exclamation mark. I tried manually update the driver (direct it to the Google SDK folder and pick the android_windowsusb.inf) but it says it does not support x64. I don't think the 64 bit driver is digitally signed.

I think I had a similar problem as yours. If you deleted the drivers while on debugging mode and reconnected after and it's showing the exclamation mark of a unknown device, try restarting your computer and plugging your phone back in.

i did and it remains the same.
Is there anyway I can know all the files names of the drivers so that I can manually delete them from system folder? When I uninstalled it from the device manager, I don't see the option "Delete the driver software for this device".
I can still see it under "adb devices" list.

I think there are some conflicts in the drivers.
Now when I connect Nexus 4 (without USB debugging mode on), it will show up in device manager under Android Device.
With USB debugging, it will then show up under Portable Devices.
However, it's supposed to work the other way around. that is (no USB debugging --> portable device; with USB debugging --> Android Device).
How can i solve this?

Have you tried manually installing the drivers before plugging in the phone, vs letting windows choose the drivers it wants to install? One option you could try is installing PDA Net on your pc. It will install reliable drivers on your pc.

i also had this same problem after flashing my first custom rom on the n4, and i also run windows 7 Ultimate x64
here is the process i use for full clean installation of device
on phone
goto SETTINGS > STORAGE > (menu) USB Computer Connection
make sure Media Device (MTP) is checked
With USB Debugging On
On your PC go to device manager
there should be 2 devices (Android Phone > Android Composite ADB Interface & Portable Devices > Nexus 4) - this is on a fully working n4 so you might only have 1 of them
Right click on each of them and click uninstall
The popup box should have another check box to delete the driver also, if this is available check it then confirm (note mine only has the box for Android Phone > Android Composite ADB Interface, but if yours has it on both then check it on both)
your computer will now ask you to restart, dont do it yet
repeat previous step for the other device if you have 2 then reboot
upon rebooting it will automatically start reinstalling drivers
by expanding the selection you should see 2 devices
Nexus 4 - Successful - Ready To Use (this is your MTP connection)
Nexus 4 - Unsuccessful - No Driver Found (this is your ADB Connection)
at this point you should be able to access internal storage however ADB will not work
go back into device manager
you should now have
Portable Devices > Nexus 4
and Other Devices > Nexus 4 (with yellow exclamation mark)
right click on the Other Devices > Nexus 4 (with yellow exclamation mark)
hit Update Driver Software
click Browse my computer for driver software

this is what i wanted to do, but the problem is that when I uninstall them, I don't get to see the option "delete the driver software for this device". What should I? cuz every time I plug in Windosws just tries to automatically install the driver for me.

Have you tried toggling to ptp mode then back to mtp on your phone. It's odd indeed.
The fact that you can't remove the driver is because that is the mtp one which is built in to media player. Let me give this some more thought
EDIT: You said that with USB debugging disabled your device is listed under device manager as an android device
can you check and verify exactly what it is listed as? as it should be portable device

hi, adb devices works. (will list my device when usb debugging is on)
with usb debugging off, under portable device, the device status says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". thanks.

I have this same issue I'm trying to find a fix, that's how I found your thread. Alex gave very good info make sure you go back to his posts and hit his "Thanks" button, I did it on everyone one of his posts in this thread. I'm starting to think it's a hardware issue and not a software issue, I've never had this issue on any device. When I got it new running stock 4.2.2 MTP didn't work. ADB works and PTP works, just not MTP no matter what I try. I recommend you learn to use, ADB push and pull to move your files if you don't already know how to use it (To use ADB I need to check PTP for it to work and not MTP) you might need to do the same. I will keep you posted if I find a fix.

I'm just getting more and more confused with this.
If Adb works then you must have an Adb driver installed for the phone. However your also stating that you get no box for uninstall driver.
With USB debugging disabled you said that it appears as an android phone rather than a portable device. This should not be.
With debugging disabled what happens if you Try to uninstall in device manager

My theory still stands that you have updated the mtp driver with adb drivers. Hence why mtp doesn't work but ptp does.
The problem is getting to a position where you can uninstall the adb drivers from the mtp device and let it reinstall the proper drivers

I plugged another Nexus 4 in, and all the drivers loaded perfectly. I then tried my Nexus 4 phone, and nothing happens. No mtp, no adb, no boot loader drivers. Its my phone. My next step is to find a zip file that I can flash via custom recovery, which will bring all the binaries and ROM back to stock. Anybody know where I can find this? I'll probably lose the custom recovery, but hopefully it will be fixed and I can flash the custom recovery again.

"LG Software" mode error + solution

I've had the following problem which I solved and now I'm wondering if anyone else found it, since I'm afraid it might point out to some hardware fault.
When selecting LG Software mode on the phone for connecting to your PC, Windows (in my case, 7 x64) attempts to install an MTP USB Device, but fails with Code 10: Device cannot start. At this point I (after many trial-and-error cycles) had to select Update Driver for that device in Device Manager, select Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of drivers, and from the next screen, pick USB Composite Device instead of MTP USB Device. It installed right away and then 4 other USB devices popped up, which also were installed (using Windows Update). After this, LG PC Suite (and also LG Mobile Support Tool) detected the phone with no problems.
So, were any of you confronted with this?

I'm actually having this same issue. When I click "Show me a list of blah blah" it doesn't give me a USB Composite option. I only get two MTP options, and if I check "Show Compatible Hardware" it shows a bunch of drivers for MTP, WMP, and some other protocols. Any ideas?

I have a problem. Phone download mod work but I connect computer not connect phone. Says "This device can work faster". Device manager says yellow exclamation.
I try any computer but problem doesnt fix.

yes, but unfortunately i don't have USB Composite Device as a selection on Windows 7 64bit. any other suggestions to get this stupid lg software installed?

After spending over 6 hours on this problem and installing a new windows, I finally found the culprit, it was Xposed Media Scanner, disabling it fixed the problem. Of course if you did not install this module before then the solution is not for you, maybe it will help someone reaching this page from Google.

Windows 10 Not Finding My Phone

Hello, I am having a rather strange problem. My PC did the dreaded auto upgrade to windows 10 the other day and I also got a new Nexus 6P. It seems my computer won't recognize my phone, at all, when I plug it in via USB. It's not even showing up in the device manager as a problem, it's like nothing happens at all.
I have
- downloaded and installed the latest google usb driver (right click install)
- downloaded the latest mtp drivers
- downloaded official nexus package from Huawei
- installed ADB and android SDK and also reinstalled the drivers from the SDK manager.
- downloaded some update for windows media player as someone mentioned that could be the problem
- tried different cables
- tried different ports (usb 3 too)
I am really at a loss. My work computer works just fine with it so I know the phone and the cable are okay and other things work on those ports on my home computer. By the way the computer is Windows 10 pro - 64bit

Have you installed Google USB Driver for nexus 6p? If not, download Google USB Driver, extract it and save it in your any name folder that you can locate it later, plug n6p in your pc or laptop and it should pop up with USB option to select either file transfer or picture transfer, click one of them, Windows should be able to find n6p driver, if not, go to setting on your pc, device manager, then look at highlighted USB of your nexus 6p whether it is properly installed, if not, then install it by finding the driver that you extracted in that specific folder... Hoping this works for you.

Thanks for the response, but yea I already got the new usb drivers and installed them via right click install. The thing is though that in device manager the phone doesnt show up, at all, not even as a problem device. Its like its not there. The phone shows that its charging, but it doesn't recognize that its plugged into a usb port. Im really unsure what to do about this.

Did you install x64 driver from Google USB Driver? Check to see to make sure your USB android debugging is checked. It is kind of odd, try to reboot your pc and nexus 6p, then plug your phone in different USB port if your pc has extra USB port..

Should be on top of the folder that your extracted...​

Ah I see what you are referring to. Well, here is the thing, how do I install those drivers? Remember I cant find it device manager to update the drivers. The only way I could find to install them was to right click the android_winusb.inf file and choose install. It said it installed okay, but of course its not working. Any idea?

By the way, I also have usb debugging on and usb configuration WAS set to MTP, but I just changed it to try the different variations, but now its stuck on charging and wont change to MTP, but I think its because the phone isnt being recognized by the computer because this morning at the office I was able to change the usb type to mtp and the others, but that computer recognized the phone... AGHHHH WTF

The only way I could find to install them was to right click the android_winusb.inf file and choose install. It said it installed okay, but of course its not working. Any idea?

By the way, if your Android debugging on or check? Just turn "developer options" on your phone and then check Android Debugging. To install x64 USB Driver, on your pc, control panel, device Manager, look for phone USB Driver to see it has some kind of yellow triangle, if so update x64 driver from your extracted folder...

Hey Lucky, I really appreciate you helping me out here, but just so you know I am no newb with this kinda stuff. I have went through this process on a couple other computers with no problem, so when I say its not showing up in device manager I mean its literally not there. Its not there and just under some other name or with a problem icon, its literally not in the device list. Also, I do have usb debugging on

Please go to YouTube and type "install usb driver on nexus 6p" search and then follow instructions from the video... Good luck.

WAIT! I got it... Wow I would of never thought this, but apprently my Wacom was the problem. As soon as I unplogged my wacom tablet the phone picked right up... Strange... Anyways, case closed... freaking conflicts!

Okay hold on, still having problems. Well, now the computer dings when I plug it in, but it still doesnt show up. However when I change the phone usb to PTP the phone becomes visible on the pc in windows explorer (but still not in device manager) and when I put it to MTP it disconnects and I cant see it in windows explorer anymore, and still cant find it in device manager... Ugh...

Okay sorry for all the messages, but i did get the MTP working. I had to uninstall the reinstall the drivers a couple times... very strange, but whatever its working... yay!

Did you figure out the problem? I'm having the exact same problem with mine and with USB mode not switching from Charging and the PC not even recognizing a USB device was plugged in.

I found using a different cable solved my problem. Don't really know why cause the first one I used seemed fine and worked to charge it, but by using a different one, Win 10 recognized it and got me in the game.

If MTP, PTP does not work (If you can't acces phone storage with PC)

My Win10 Insider Preview machine did not recognize the phone. Nothing happened when I connected the phone and I could not access storage of the phone.
Below is the solution for it:
Go to Control Panel - Device Manager - LeMobile Android Device (could be under a different name. Choose the one that is your phone) - Update Driver - Manually Install a Driver - Let me pick a list of available drivers on my computer - MTP USB .

Uhm ... when you connected the phone to computer you changed the mode on phone from USB charging to MTP mode ?
In my Win10 x64 build 14392.447 not problem to see the phone in MTP mode after changing mode on phone.

Alternative solution is to use KDE Connect app over Wifi. Bonus is that once set up, it is possible to push files from the phone to the PC without any interaction on the PC side - e.g. useful if the PC doubles as a file server.

Both of my home & works computer (Win10 14959) failed to detect it as MTP or PTP drive. Might have been due to those having previous phone's drivers.
But I faced same problem with fresh out of the box Win8 laptop.

No issue with the MTP, however I can't seem to get adb to work. list of devices attached is showing empty.

I had the same issue, i reinstalled minimal ADB and removed the drivers from my pc, rebooted my pc. Plugged the phone into a different USB port and voilá ADB could see it

Wanted to add my voice here too that I did the same - I had to clean up previous drivers I had installed over time for varios phones and different ADB versions like the one from clockworkmod - once I cleaned that out and installed google drivers from SDK PTP worked and I was able to do Helium restores

I had issue on my Win10 PC, but I found that after I disabled USB debugging, it would work as MTP/PTP, but not for ADB of course. So apparently, I have to toggle USB debugging ON/OFF to switch back and forth from MTP and ADB.
Small pain in the butt.

Solution.
I had the same issue. Drove me NUTS for about an hour. In the end, simply unchecked the USB DEBUGING in developer settings. This will make it pop up immediately.
