ZTE Axon 7 Max - no play store - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

I ordered a ZTE Axon 7 Max from china using eBay, and it came without the Play Store. I couldnt find it on the chinese ZTE store, and sideloading the apk let me install it but it wont open. Its in the open apps key but it won't load, like its blocked. Anyone have a fix? With how long it took to get it here and deal with the non-English speaking employees of this electronics sales group, I'd rather not have to send it back, but without rooting it and flashing another ROM it seems like this phone is nearly useless as an android without the Play Services being able to be used. This is a very frustrating situation, if its device specific I'm going to be livid that it wasn't in the description that it should only be purchased by Chinese clientele and not a functioning device outside their country...

Lol you need much more than just the play store app... There are a bunch of other apps that have to be installed on the system to make everything work. For example Play Services
It IS a frustrating situation but you could have avoided it by investigating first. Chinese phones never come with Google apps, only some phones that are previously unlocked and tampered with by the sellers come with it preinstalled. What you have to do to install Google stuff is unlock the bootloader (I don't even know if there's a guide anywhere to do that, since I heard very little about the Max), install TWRP, and flash OpenGApps or BeansGApps

i was actually able to install google play store and google play services as downloaded apk files. I transferred them from computer to phone via cable. And they got installed and work.

Happy days!
What is an Axon 7 Max? Extra large screen?

Dual camera, standard Chinese design on the front, 3D LCD display (although some say that it's only good when displaying photos from the dual cam). Also I think it has zero development

On an axon 7 max?

The axon 7 max i would say is a completely separate device from the axon 7, and unfortunately does not seem to even have development for it on XDA, since it has a snapdragon 625 processor compared to our snapdagon 820. So if you thought you got it because of the "max" branding and thought everything in this forum will work for you, then you're wrong my dude but hey if you figure out how to unlock bootloader, install TWRP, remove verity and install Magisk, you could possibly create development threads in the Android General forum and Android Software Development forum for the 7 Max, unless there already is.
And hey still, perhaps you could try some of the development stuff from here, but I won't take responsibility for bricking your device.

Yes, I know... That's why you shouldn't use anything from here

I dare to disagree with you... I would actually love to have root access and to be able to install gapps on it. I can"t even import my google contacts as the google account is not seen as an option in the Phonebook"s settings... Strangely, the Yahoo and Facebook accounts are an option... There is an "Add Acount">Exchange Account>Google option, but, when typing in the gmail details, it will say "This account exists" and then with "Start" as the only option, open my gmail emails....

You disagree with what? Yeah, sure, the world would be a better place with root and all, but unfortunately, you are on the A2017X forum. You have a C2017. No help here.

It sais "Axon 7" in the title, not A2017X, right? C2017 is an "Axon 7" too... It's the Max version of the Axon 7. Isn't it?

Nope. Phones don't work that way man...
They could have called that phone the "Blade V958" and you would not make this dumb argument.
What SOC does the Max have? SD65x?
Think about it this way:
-There are 3 variants of the Axon 7. The A2017, the A2017G and the A2017U. Cross-flashing kills the radio or even wipes the IMEIs.
There are 3 phones that fall under the Axon 7 category: Axon 7, Axon 7 mini, and Axon 7 max. They are A2017X, B2017X and C2017X. The Mini has just recently gotten a tool to unlock it. It has nothing to do with the Axon 7's. THEY ARE DIFFERENT PHONES
There are two variants of the Moto G 2. Titan and Thea. One has 4G and the other hasn't. Cross-flashing bricks the phones. (If you actually modded the files so that they would flash)
In these two examples these phones have exactly the same SOC. SD820 for the Axon 7, SD40x for the G 2.
Now think about what would happen if you flashed anything from another SOC to the phone...
Don't try to force the argument. You can't even use the same tools for unlocking because axon7tool will write in another address and you'll hopelessly hard-brick your phone forever.

You will need to go through the process of learning how to root and unlock the phone. I hope there will be enough support or assistance for you on this site and that it being an N9006 won't be too problematic.
I am in China, but went out of my way to avoid the N9002, N9006, N9008 or any other variant they are selling here. I get my hands on the N9005 in a few days, so time will tell if it actually bloody works or not in China. It wouldn't surprise me to find that we are stuck in the same same boat on different shores...

Actually the process looks like it might be easy enough for us:
http://techbeasts.com/2013/09/27/ho...ot-samsung-galaxy-note-3-all-versions-guide/#
Describes the way to do it.
Then you'll probably need to stick the most recent GAPPS on it, if it isn't already on it.
Good luck and have fun getting through the nervousness of rooting your first (I presume) device.
Cheers.
Should I return the n9006?
Hi there - I'm living in Shanghai and just found this thread. I bought the sm-n9006 today and was excited until I started reading about region locking and non-LTE versions, etc.
This is my first Android device so I'm super new but the bloatware on this thing is annoying! I wanted to remove this stuff and get some Google apps installed but I can't even find the Google play app to get started.
I'm concerned that because it's the mainland china version that this is going to be a bigger pain than it's worth. Should I wait a few months and have a family member buy a US model? Any other reasons to stay clear of this china model?
Is rooting the device a must if I want to get full access to apps, etc.?
Also, it seems this model does not have LTE. Is that correct? I ravel/stay in the US over summer holidays. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

The bloatware won't be your main problem, it will be no access to google apps. I wouldn't worry about no LTE, you probably won't notice.
Importantly for Laowai, rooting is necessary, unless you are fluent in chinese, and can therefore use the Chinese markets and apps.
There are quite a few places online to find out how to unlock and root your device - this forum/link above/galaxynote3root.com/etc. I think you'll need about three to four hours of uninterrupted time (as a beginner), a pc (I've used a mac and it is annoying), fast-ish internet speed (to dowload the files), maybe a vpn to look at You tube clips that exemplify (eg, gfwvpn.com is handy and easy to install on both your computer and device), and only a small amount intellect.
You go through the process as above link or elsewhere, and then flash on an updated GAPPS zip if it isn't on the stuff you downloaded.
People here and elsewhere have really made it simple compared to when I first did mine (or maybe I have a little more knowledge). I'm only really just getting the hang of it all now and find it really enjoyable part of Android experience. Actually, just fell in love again with my S3 using CM... Wondering why I am going back to touch wiz, actually...
I'll know on Monday if it was the right choice for me after a day with the new giant phone.
Good luck.
Thanks for the post and information, I am new to android so it looks like I'll have to start doing my research. I am not fluent but certainly advanced so perhaps there are some Chinese options though I assume it'd be a better experience if I had it rooted instead.
Are you in SH by chance? I'd treat you to a coffee or something here in Pudong if so while you tutor me haha.
Thanks again for your help.

SM-N9006 More than root needed?
I have the same SM-N9006 purchased in China and now back in the USA. Most of the Chinese in the phone was converted to English through the normal settings. The problem is the Apps... they are all Chinese and need to be replaced with English versions. The current ROM blocks all access to the Google Play Store, even if it is side loaded, it is forcibly closed when opened.
Would it not be better to re-ROM the phone with a Samsung stock ROM that will work with the N9006 hardware? Is there such a ROM?
Please be specific on the steps (not the how to's) that need to be taken to use the N9006 in the USA with the Play Store Apps.
Much Thanks in advance, I'm also a newbie on a learning curve.

I just got this Note 3 SM-N9006, I think mine is rooted that it has everything as if it's normal Note 3 in the US. But I note that it does not show that it connects using 4G/LTE. Does it have 4G/LTE, air command, etc ... capabilities to turn on somehow?
Is there an app that display what really inside your note, I mean the actual hardware of the phone?
N9006 doesn't have 4G/LTE. air command is ok

Really? I wouldn't be too happy to buy a rooted phone from Samsung... you won't get one officially at least. Especially if you bought it in China that would mean its been messed with prior to you buying it. I like my phones coming rooted.
If you had them root it after them unboxing your phone ( hopefully not with Kingo App or some suspicious app that connects to the internet to do its thing ) then your fine. Provided you saw them unbox everything...its not a cheap phone.
If the serial numbers on the box and your phone match ( and the box has some Chinese ) then your fine.
If area under the removable battery didn't have any bright yellow sticker with lots of nasty looking Chinese text, then your fine.
If your in the U.S then its fine you don't need to worry about warranty.... as I am still currently in Shanghai I got mine official with a 2 year warranty.
Sorry if I sound too untrusting of phone sellers here. I have been told of the countless stories about how innocent people buy phones they assume are "new". Just recently I had to help my friend fight some store "official Samsung Store" owner for his replacement of a dead Note 2 dud ( you know those fake recycled phones that are sold in Shenzhen from HongKong that live for 4 months tops ).

Can N9006 run 3G or 4G SOMEHOW? Or is there no workaround?
Hello, I am having the same issue someone mentioned about not getting 4G (or even 3G) with the SM-N900 (model N9006) Chinese Note 3. I did not see a solution to the initial post, though. My phone does everything else, but running on Edge is pretty shoddy. I called T-Mobile (my carrier), and they made me enter some settings into the "access point names" tab (apn protocol, port number, etc.). This did not resolve the problem, unfortunately. The back of the phone, under the battery, says it is 3G WCDMA + GSM. T-Mobile runs on GSM, so it should work, I am absolutely stumped. As I said, all the apps work, and it is running Jelly Bean, it's just the slow as molasses internet that bugs me. Is there some sort of solution to this? I could not really find anything worthwhile on any Google searches. Thanks in advance! :fingers-crossed:
I have n9006 and when I type the star and hash key it Cannot display and when switch the data off it automatically switch on and I don't know what to do with the phone,I cannot use it

Fire os 4.x is not rootable, while 3.x is. BTW, bootloader of this device is locked, and the unblock method has been discovered but won't be released for legal issues.
You can contact Amazon to rollback to 3.x to get rooted.
I wonder if we have any chance to get root on new 4.5.2 without roll back?

Why did you buy it in the first place? The only reason for purchasing a Kindle is to take advantage of Amazon Prime content. That stuff is not available on any other tablet. Amazon Instant Video, alone, makes the Kindle a great tablet if (again) you are a member of Amazon Prime. If not, the Nexus is a far superior tablet.

Thanks to the poster above, totally agree on the Prime.
The only thing that irks me on the Kindle is Amazons much smaller app and often out dated selection compared to google / other stores.
I got boned into the 4.5.2 update, can you confirm this cannot be rolled back by Amazon Support.
I started with 4.2.0 on this Saturn so I think I was boned to begin with.

Many (if not most) GPlay apps work fine on the Kindle with sideloading. As far as I know Amazon will not roll back updates. Suppose they would. Do you really want to go from Kit-Kat back back to (I'm not certain) Ice-Cream-Sandwich (possibly with some leftover Gingerbread)?
I would like to root this device. The reason is that I want to use the Google Now launcher. It actually works fine now except that it cannot be set as a permanent default. I also want to install BubbleUPnP. Bubble works but the paid license requires GPlay. However, there is no way in hell that I would roll back my O/S to do so.
Doesn't look like there's many custom roms for this device. Black Friday 4g £119 couldn't resist the spec
May be a long wait for the next exploit.
Just out of curiosity, can anyone point me in the direction of a good tutorial on using another ROM slot?

That works im the rest of Europe too, at least in germany... And no, amazon prime is not the only reason to buy a quadcore fullhd 7" tablet for around 130 euros... My NAS has much better content than amazon prime Video.. So i use kodi to watch movies, not the Browser...

Unfortunately the play store will not work without root. You can however pull some play store apps off a device that has a working version of google play and side load them onto the kindle hdx. I have been testing this recently and a good number of my apps work but unfortunately some do not.

Well they are for physical items not digital content and if you ate a member of this forum then you can understand the digital age access, licensing, encryption and tracking mechanisms as well

Buying a Mate 8 from China. What to look for?

Hello, guys!
I am interested in buying the Mate 8 from a Chinease retailer. My main motivation is that they offer lower prices on the device. However I am aware that there are some "risks" involved so I wanted to make this tread, hoping that some usefull advice can be gathered here.
Firstly, I understand that there are a couple of versions of the Mate 8. As far they are conserned the only ones worth considering are the AL10, L29 and L09 since the other versions, like DL00 for instance, have poor software support. Does this mean that the former enjoy regular software updates? In the case of the AL10 can one receive the uptades regulary if he is not residing in China? Does Huawei push montly security patches?
My second consern is regarding google play services. As far as I understand a buyer of an AL10 would receive the device without google play store and google services. Is it true that the device comes with a Huawei app store from where they can be downloaded? Are there any issues regarding the installation and regular usage of the play store and other apps that are downloaded on an AL10?After all it is a Chinease version so perhaps it was not meant to have play store on it.
Thirdly I would like to ask whether one should allow the retailer to install google play and multi-ling support? I ask this because it came to my knowledge that these vendors would usually install some kind of custom rom that does not have software support.
Is there something that I am missing? Would you have any further advice? Is there something else one must look after when buying a device from China?
I bought mine here
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/1968447 (not sure if i can show a link to a store).
take a DHL and tell them to write on package that is worth about 80 usd to pay less taxes.
Ive got a DL00 version, 32 rom, 3 ram. Its multilanguage support with a play store and OTA updates support. Working great, smooth and fast. And it was cheaper than in polish store about 30% !
They got support on whatsapp and they help you in your problems.
I can highly recommend it to you. If you have any questions u can always prv me.
I bought the mate 8 just after it released in China (I went in person). I am now residing in Australia and still receive the updates as fast as others in China. The only issue is some apps and features (like the update change log) are in Chinese and I can't change it, not that bad for me but maybe it is for you.
It comes with Huaweis app store which upon searching google can install all the normal google apps like the appstore. I've had absolutely no issues using it normally here and every app and setting I need works.
I wouldn't get them to do anything to the phone because it's easy to do myself.

I am glad to hear that your device works properly!
I suppose when you first set it up you have the option to choose between English and Chinease right? Do you need to have a huawei account to download apps from the Huawei app store? If yes, did you have any issues setting it up? I am asking because I have heard that some people do have. Regarding the change log it would't botter me if it is in Chinease, but is there something more "major" that is also in Chinease and one should know of?
You can convert the China Version AL 10 to C432 Euroversion or C636 Asia Version.

Yeah it's like any phone that has the option to change language on start up.
Had no issues setting up Huawei account. Not sure if it's needed or not though.

I've just bought the Mate 8 in Guangzhou on last Sunday (Sept 25, 2016) in a Huawei store. Installed Google services, sync contacts.. without any problem!

Yotaphones affected with rootkits and backdoors, can it be true?

Hi, I heard on the news that russian and chinese phones may be stuffed with rootkits and backdoors straight from the factory. One reporter mentioned mob/gangs involved.
Can this be true? People have so much personal info on their phones that would be interesting to thieves. And hardly a way to keep them out or to check if you're safe.
I know that there's always a risk, and I'm not going back to a dumbphone. Just wondering if the russian and chinese phones could be the greater risk here.
Not that I particularly trust Apple, Google or Samsung, but I do trust them not to take my phone hostage by ransomware or steal my creditcard info.
The brand Yotaphone is new to me, I really like the idea of the EPD. I tried to get a YD201 a couple of weeks ago, but they're sold out. Now I am considering to buy the Yotaphone 3 when it arrives. But this rumor has me rethinking if I should. Any thoughts on this?
The yotaphone was actually cleared for use in USA a couple of years ago.

Do you have a link to these sources?
Its probably just paranoid people speculating.
I own a YD206, and is great.
If you really are convinced that there are rootkits and backdoors, just install an antivirus of your choice and run a full scan.
I heard it on the news, so no links unfortunately. It's not like I made up the news either, but it's not so unthinkable if you ask me. I do wonder about my data, and don't mind asking somebody else's opinion.
IIRC it was BLU phones sending user data back to China and that was only because of a third party service called adups which provided the OTA. BLU doesn't make hardware they rebrand existing phones from China, and I remember reading somewhere they don't make the firmware either which is how this fxxk up occured.
Both the actual yotaphone hardware and firmware are unique and not rebranded like BLU. Yota also can't go to another company like BLU did and ask them to make the firmware since their phones have the EPD. I'm confident yota is safe, and besides it's Facebook and Google you have to worry about since they actually collect a fxxk ton of your data.
TL;DR Yota is most likely safe. It's BLU, Google and Facebook you need to worry about.
I own a YD201 (Yotaphone 2) btw.
Hi LeslieKawiti,
That makes sense. Besides, if Yota would be caught that would be the instant deathblow for the brand. It being a niche phone, maybe it's not the best target for a money scam.
It's this stupid Russian hackers bull**it.
But I did once buy a Chinese IP cam, that was infected. Firmware had a virus that enables them to use your internet for DDOS. I updated it with the official firmware and that fixed it. It was something a seller or somebody in transport did, I don't think manufacturer could afford to do something this 'evil'. But who knows what tomorrow brings.

How did you get the googlesearch removed?
I have issues on 6.1 update,
# pm disable com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox
for example does not work and I can not deactivate it in user mode as well.

If you are talking about the persistent search box, I installed Nova Launcher and ditched it in no time.

…although, that’s a bit out of track, me thinks.
Thanks for the temporarily fix
Yes sir, you are correct. Thanks for the advice of installing another launcher.
Still though disabling/hiding softbricks the phone by either bootloop on disabling or freezing on removing
this google system app by force.
It is very sad to have no control about the phone in that aspect.
-> Further the app is occasionally asking different data from phone which can be seen with xprivacy.
Under these internet, serial, activites, location/list and phone/listen. (without using search or audio input)
This sounds creepy to me.

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2017) Model - root, rom, anything?

I have 2 of the new 2017 HD 8's, one for me and my gf. Im wondering if anyone has been able to find stable root or has any issues for side loading google play?
Primary uses will be to watch kodi, amazon prime tv, netflix, and general social media.
mine comes with the advertisements, but $15 charge to get rid of em, i will have to see how annoying that is.
Appreciate the feedback!

I'm wondering the same, I've got one coming Saturday and I'm kinda scared to update or connect in case I miss an opportunity to root. Hopefully the older methods will work for Play Store and such.

@boadicea I did find this, a post with apks for sideloading Playstore on the 7th Gen. Hope it works and helps!

Nobody's really cracked root on the 2016 or 2017 versions yet, as far as I can tell. There are some folks at LineageOS working on getting a version of that rom onto this device, but not a lot of word so far.
I got Google Play sideloaded successfully by using this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/how-to-install-google-play-store-fire-t3486603
NOTE: When you enable the installing of apps from unknown sources, make sure you restart the device before attempting to open any of the downloaded apks. Otherwise, the install button just won't work and you might go crazy trying to figure out why. For whatever reason, Amazon's device settings need a fresh restart after you tick that box.
NOTE 2: If you just bought these, you likely have the 2017 edition. If that's the case, you'll want to pay attention to the red letters in that guide marked "Note (3)".
SOURCE: Just got mine today.
So far there is no root for any Amazon tablet at this time, unless you have an OS earlier than 5.3.2.1. There may not be root at all for these tablets. Amazon offers a 30 day refund policy on them. If you find they aren't for you, that's how long you have to return them
Thank you all for the responses! just unpacked, screen protected, and turned it on. Looks like its running 5.3.3.0 so looks like im SOL for now.
No worries either way, sideloading stuff is all i need. was just meant to allow me to save battery on my phone/usage and not have to be bent over on a laptop.
Will follow the aforementioned guides to install google play
Appreciate the help!
I can suggest three apps to help in the battery, space and memory saving department. 'All In One Toolbox,' 'Brevent' and 'NetGuard.' All available in Google Play Store. If you need help giving All In One Toolbox it's usage access, let me know and I'll link you to a few threads i wrote on how to give apps proper usage access that need it and to revoke the access to some Amazon apps.
I just bought a new 2017 7th generation Fire HD 8 for $50 during prime day sale. I jumped the gun not realizing that there is no root. I have the previous generation fire 7 with Slim Rom installed that I rooted back on Christmas of 2015. It still works great and my kids use it everyday. I'm impressed with the older fire 7 as I have daydream on displaying the weather while it's charging and the daily abuse it gets from the kids. I really would like to have a bigger, better screen with dual audio for the kids, hence why I bought the HD 8. I might return it, or hold on to it till root and custom Rom becomes available... Hopefully in the near future.
having fun

Hi boadicea,
apart from my feedback on Gmail that you can read here,
there is no issue at all at installing (side loading)Google Play.
I just bought my first tablet, and installed Google Play in few seconds following the link above
Only thing where I have been spending some time is to make sure to disable the OTA updates. (my post here)
Happy tweak.
