[Q] Battery heat ?

Hi.
While playing games my Xperia Play produces lots of heat. The back of the phone, and the gamepad feels really warm.
I checked the temperature with Battery Monitor Widget and when I don't use the phone it stays around 25-30 degrees Celsius, but when I play games (even 2D ones) it goes up to 38-40.
Is this a normal thing or there's something wrong with my battery ?

I can confirm this happens. Basically it is using more charge, therefore as a side effect of that it produces more heat from the chemical reaction. Same thing when you have it charging.
It isn't horrible, but try not to let it get too hot as it may shorten the lifespan of the battery.

So this is true for all xperia plays that after some time of gaming the phone will be really warm ?

The phone will get warmer, of course... but 40 degrees is not excessively hot. It feels warm in your hand, but it's not dangerous. A dangerous temperature would be close to 50.

The highest temperature that I had was 44 degrees after a long Nova 2 session.
I am a bit worried by the fact that while browsing the net through wifi the battery heats up to 38 degrees, but it's okay as long as it's less than 50 :> ?

I'd say if it goes above 46 or 47 you just switch it off for a while. Not only because you don't want to overheat it, but because running the phone on higher temperatures reduces battery life (higher temperature means higher resistance to conductivity for metals).

Have you ever reached 50(or that 46,47) degrees on Xperia Play or any other phone ? What app made your battery that hot ?

My former phone, the Galaxy S had HUGE issues with temperature while using 3G. Every time I toggled it on, the phone became awfully hot and the battery drain skyrocketed. I got it on 53 degrees once, since it was in my pocket. I was a bit scared, but the phone resisted it. Still, it wasn't pleasant.
The advantage of the Xperia Play being bulky and plasticky is that it's hard to bring it to extreme temperatures. If it's hard to make it hot, it has a positive impact on battery life as well.

Yea, this happens to me all the time. When using anything that drains my battery it heats it up as well.

All batteries release heat as current passes through them. When the phone is idle, the heat released is low enough your hand doesn't feel it. As the current increases while gaming, so does the heat.
It's nothing to worry about. The batteries are designed to handle heat without being damaged.
Especially since android devices are becoming more popular in places like india, where there's a lot of ambient heat.

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Honor 6X stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.

The time when i feel the hottest moment is when it is under charge

heat is actually expected of smartphones guys, every smartphone heats up a little or a bit high
not a dealbreaker thing

according to me if u do heavy usage in room temp 24-30 degree around phone will not heat up . It will heat up but at very slow rate and as if room temp is more than 30 degree C then ur phone will heat up a bit fast coz our phone is made up of metal and we all know metal absorbs heat very fast .

what you said is correct theoretically, but I never heard phones heat up due to the surrounding temperature

Surely the cause of the overheating can't be the outside temperature, but at the same time an already hot weather forces the hardware to work under hard stress... I had an old model of the first PS3 that came out with 60GB 'n retro compatibility to PS2 games, since i buyed it lasted with no problems until the summer of the previous year, where the temperature in my room was at something like 35°C. I was playing a game, Splatterhouse, and at some point I've started to hear the fan behind the PS3 working always faster. Then, after some minute it suddenly freezed in-game and the console went off. From there on, my PS3 is in YLOD state. Obviously even the console had his years (8) but guys, I'm more than sure that that day, if i wouldn't played my console probably it could still be alive...

for quick test just use ur phone under sunlight for 5 min
and in AC rooms ur phone feels cool so surrounding factors effects 25-50% bro

yeah, what you say is correct, but the topic was heating due to processor performance/excess load, or excess charging
in that case.,even if you are in an ac room, your device will heat up a little

From my experience phone remains cool unless charging.

Device shouldn't heat up except when doing heavy tasks like heavy graphics games.

Phone gets heated when using it constantly for about 30 mins in a room with an ambient temperature of 30 C

Noticed a major moment of heat during the use of Google Maps, but with position services on I think is almost inevitable as it's a thing that i see on every device

I currently have both Moto G4 Plus and the Honor 6X. The G4 heats up quickly during quick charge, videos, and when using google maps on a trip. Often, when trying to establish a signal in weak areas it heats up as well. The heat can sometimes be concerning. The 6X on the other hand barely warms up compared to the G4. The warmest I've seen it is when using google maps, while charging at the same time.

It heats up sometimes while charging but cools down fast.

Doesn't get heated up on regular usage or moderate heavy usage.

No excessive heating on heavy usage.

This is one area you can deffunietly show off
This phone don't get warms at all(negligible)

Never experienced heating till now.

Normal temperature?

Hello, what is the normal temperature for s8 when not using and when actively using it? Mine is around 30 degrees when I unlock it after not using for 10-15 minutes, and 35-37 when actively using (music, browser, etc). Is that ok?

First of all what is your ambient temperature? Secondly is this your CPU temp or batt. temp? Under heavy load CPU can go up to 70-90C before it starts throttling, battery shouldn't go much above 40-45C, but if you live in Las Vegas or Phoenix, this is how hot it gets outside, so phone will reach those temp even when shutdown, if you leave it outside.

Thank you foe explaining, Battery temperature is 37 when I amactively using phone. I live in Moscow, right now we have around 5 degrees Celsius. Don't know how to get cpu temperature.

I would imagine you're using your phone inside a house, with temp. probably around 20-25C. Now I looked at battery statistics on my phone and it seems my phone's battery never went above 40C in the past 2 weeks. I don't think 37C you got is something to worry about yet, but if your battery is 30 even at idle inside of 20-25C room??, you may want to look into why your phone is running, when you're not using it. Another possibility is that your temp. sensor is miscalibrated and it shows little high. In other words, when your phone is not being used, it should be in deep sleep mode and battery should be withing couple degrees your room/ outside temperature, depending where you are.

Can you please advice any app to see what's running when phone is in deep sleep? I have a custom Rom, and I noticed increase of temperature after last update (or maybe I installed some root software that causes it)

Mine does not seem to heat up much at all, it is about room temp while playing games and what not. S8+ ATT

Do you have root? if yes, wakelock detector should show you what is keeping your phone waking up.
If not, 3C tools has whole suite of applications including nice battery manager, it keeps log of your battery charge/ temp etc every 10min, there is apps manager etc.

Have 2 days s8, same settings usage than my s7edge, and it's getting hot, I don't know the previous update, because i update and reset before use the phone.
But with Bluetooth on link to the car, and reading already went to 41 degrees its to much compared to s7.
Maybe I need to change it.

Overheating problem on one plus 5 ?

So, I noticed that When gaming (especialy with game offering 60 Fps mode) the phone will freeze and then goes into reboot even when played on cold room
from CPU temp apps, it seems when the temperature hit 40 centigrade. the phone shut down
Anyone else have this kind of problem ?
is bellow 40 centigrade is the safe limit for this phone ?

This is by far the coolest device I've ever owned, no heat no matter what I throw at it. What does your setup look like? (ROM, kernel, etc.)

Im testing it to run some CPU intensive games (60fps)
when the temperature reach 40 centigrade. it shut down
on normal usage it is quite cold.
but it seems the thermal threshold were quite low, my old HTC might also throttled down at 40 centrigade
but it dont shut down until 50 or 51 centrigade.
1+ 5 dont thorrtled but instead goes straight into shutdown
my country ambient temperature were quite high due to located near equator (30 centigrade avg, with 35 centrigade being common on daylight)
so without air conditioned room, I found it can become overheated - rather quickly

only had overheat problems using camera related chat apps (kik) and in 110 Fahrenheit degrees in CA USA

Might be a bit of an extreme solution but try doing a factory reset and see if that helps. If not, contact OnePlus support and see if you can get an RMA started. I say that because my device stays cool even on the hottest days of where I am.

I agree with the RMA solution, something isn't right because I can do anything on this phone and it never gets hot. Even when it's 99 degrees Fahrenheit with 70% humidity here in Ohio.
I've done some seriously intensive gaming and crap on this phone, and I cannot get it to overheat.

The snapdragon 835 is the coolest phone processor, you don't have any overheating issue, it must be something else. When you say 49° are you talking about the cpu, battery, skin temp?

CPU temp record its 40 centrigade when device shut down

Cpu at 40° while gaming is really low, some phones hit 85°, of course they will throttle after that.

yeah. Thats why when the phone shut down after reach 40 centigrade.
its confusing since the thermal threshold should not be that low

same problem here

Phone has not felt even the slightest bit warm to the touch no matter what I'm doing so far. Like literally stone cold 24/7.

Mine gets hot after playing 3D games. The heat is mostly at the top of the device around the camera area.
Fine in normal use though.

I've played a couple games for a while and it seems to only heat up on graphically intensive, but I mean that's expected. I played the stranger things game for about an hour and it didn't warm up at all. I switched to shadowgun legends, maxed the settings out, and it started getting hot within like 5 minutes. As Joe explained, it gets hot near the camera, but it isn't too bad and it cools down really fast, literally in a minute or so after closing the game.

Yeah, agree with all of the above. I should clarify the game I was playing was Honkai 3rd Impact on max settings which is fairly graphically intensive.

At what temperature does your OP6 hover at.
I don't play games.
As per cpu-z, mine stays between 30.5 to 39 degree Celsius.
(The temp here in Punjab, India reaches 47).
It feels like warmish after I installed Apple music app yesterday.
Before that didn't feel any warmth.

I tested cpu-z for you and got very similar temperatures. I was at around 28°c after turning my phone on. It went to around 31°c when scrolling through twitter and listening to Spotify. And after playing showdowgun legends for a few minutes it got up to 38°c.

I'm no expert, but since we have similar temperatures, I'd assume it's completely normal.

Hi..
Could test with the cpu-z app as to what temperature your set reaches when it's the warmest.
Mine has reached almost 39 degrees Celsius when using for everything other than games, for an extended period.
Sometimes though.
Usually it stays around 31 to 35 degrees Celsius on Cpu-z ( its peak summer time here in India, with daytime temperature always above 40).
Above what temperature should one get worried?

you "worry" above 80 degrees Celcius, but I dont like it to get much higher than body temp.
I does cool off fast, But it can get really warm sitting in the sun.
I leave mine in a holder on my dash while I drive, playing pandora via bluetooth, and it can get pretty hot.

A few minutes of use, Pandora playing through internal speaker. Heavy JavaScript use on web browser.
It should be noted that my OP6 is Rooted and DeBloated.

Still not clear on one thing.
As to how hot is worrisome?
I spent a full hour browsing Chrome, in a car in a parking lot with no AC on and outside temp hovering at 38-39 degree centigrade,
and my device's battery temp (as on cpu-z app) went to about 41.2 degree centigrade.
I turned the AC on and within no time fell down to 34 centigrade.
Is that normal behaviour?

Of course it's normal behavior if your surrounding temperature is that high

Good luck with that in the summer!

I'm finding the screen does get noticeably warm to the touch at the top area near the SoC, just from normal use (such as using Chrome etc). Battery temp rises to about 35 degrees.
A little concerning I'd say.

Another disadvantage of glass back (beside dirt, fingerprints, fragility)
