While playing games my Xperia Play produces lots of heat. The back of the phone, and the gamepad feels really warm.
I checked the temperature with Battery Monitor Widget and when I don't use the phone it stays around 25-30 degrees Celsius, but when I play games (even 2D ones) it goes up to 38-40.
Is this a normal thing or there's something wrong with my battery ?

I can confirm this happens. Basically it is using more charge, therefore as a side effect of that it produces more heat from the chemical reaction. Same thing when you have it charging.
It isn't horrible, but try not to let it get too hot as it may shorten the lifespan of the battery.
So this is true for all xperia plays that after some time of gaming the phone will be really warm ?
The phone will get warmer, of course... but 40 degrees is not excessively hot. It feels warm in your hand, but it's not dangerous. A dangerous temperature would be close to 50.
The highest temperature that I had was 44 degrees after a long Nova 2 session.
I am a bit worried by the fact that while browsing the net through wifi the battery heats up to 38 degrees, but it's okay as long as it's less than 50 :> ?

I'd say if it goes above 46 or 47 you just switch it off for a while. Not only because you don't want to overheat it, but because running the phone on higher temperatures reduces battery life (higher temperature means higher resistance to conductivity for metals).

My former phone, the Galaxy S had HUGE issues with temperature while using 3G. Every time I toggled it on, the phone became awfully hot and the battery drain skyrocketed. I got it on 53 degrees once, since it was in my pocket. I was a bit scared, but the phone resisted it. Still, it wasn't pleasant.
The advantage of the Xperia Play being bulky and plasticky is that it's hard to bring it to extreme temperatures. If it's hard to make it hot, it has a positive impact on battery life as well.

Yea, this happens to me all the time. When using anything that drains my battery it heats it up as well.
All batteries release heat as current passes through them. When the phone is idle, the heat released is low enough your hand doesn't feel it. As the current increases while gaming, so does the heat.
It's nothing to worry about. The batteries are designed to handle heat without being damaged.
Especially since android devices are becoming more popular in places like india, where there's a lot of ambient heat.

Im not sure if this is normal but the cpu temperature after like 5 mins of use always goes up to 30 degrees is this normal? I'm not overclocking and not doign much but you can feel that the battery gets real warm...

CPU temperature of what device?
30C is low or normal for most PCs, and though I am not sure about mobile devices in some parts of the world it is room temperature this time of year.
For a better (more specific) answer please write what device you are measuring the temperature for and what software you are using to do it.

The feel of the battery has nothing to do with CPU temperature. They often get warm specially while charging.
On my prophet, if I charge it, OC it and use all the radios (Bluetooth,wifi) and do processor intensive stuff like watching a video, battery status tells me it's at about 40... I haven't noticed any damage, but I only do things like this very occasionally. I don't think it should be a problem although if the battery gets too hot it will degrade.
allright im using htc p4350 Herald and I'm measuring with battery status pro...
But it might just be fine if l3v5y says somethin about 40 degrees...
I would try and keep the temp down as it will last longer running cooler, but I don't think it will impact too heavily.
I was wondering if any one else's Atrix gets pretty warm/hot from use. I was expecting the dual core to generate heat but it does concern me a little. The battery app I am using displays the phone temp and when its idle it is about low to mid 30's. I noticed today while using the gps and playing music at the same time the phone started to get pretty hot. when I looked at the temp it was 45. It didn't get any hotter then that and I tried moving the phone out of direct sunlight to see if it would drop the temps a little but it still stayed pegged at 45. Playing one of the dual core supported games the phone would hover around 40-42 deg. Are these normal operating temps for the phone?
I don't have an atrix.. yet. but could it be due to the 1960mAh battery? that would in theory heat the phone up quite a bit..
I haven't checked the numbers, but what you describe matches my subjective experience. Most of the time the phone stays cool, but when it can get warm during an extended Samurai II session or when charging from less than 50% battery.
I think in one of the other multiple battery threads someone explained that the heat is coming from where the processors are located, the bottom portion of the screen.
My Atrix does get noticeably hot when streaming video or playing games...

The dual 1GHz cpu, gpu, and 1GB DDR2 ram packages are stacked on top of each other, just above where the speaker grill is. I'd expect that to get quite warm.

45C is not that bad. I hear about people running their phones to 50 - 55C. The only issue with prolonged use at that temp would be decreased battery performance. Even then it would need to be running at that temp pretty constantly to have any noticeable effect unless you plan on keeping the phone for more than a year (which would be impossible for someone like me anyways, I like shiny new things)

Yes. Actually experiencing the same. This is also a Korean version.
It is not too crazy hot. But I think it does get warm a little to fast for my taste.

Yes, mine branded H870 suffering of extreme overheating issue. I have to turn off the device to let it to cool itself!
Your device has some kind of carrier's brand??
I have also other disappointing issues!

the same issue for me! can't be normal for a top level smartphone :/
I have the T-Mobile variant and it gets warm. But never to hot to touch. The only time it ever gets close to that is when charging in the car. I use the Anker QC 3.0 car charger so I assume that's why it gets warm. Plus the sunlight.
I've had a few glass phones and I've noticed they feel warmer than normal and I can only blame it on the natural heat dispersion that glass has. Whenever glass is warm at all it always feels way hotter than what it is. With the cooling system in place that is why you feel more heat around the fingerprint scanner and on the side of the phone it's just doing its job
Also if you are using a case and you take it off and it's super hot/you feel the heat through the case it's probably because of the case trapping heat in the phone. I almost always charge my phone caseless or with my fan blowing on it since the phone is designed and tested without cases.
Try closing all apps while it charges maybe try a new case? Turn down your brightness or something. If nothing works maybe try a warranty replacement. It's possible your cooling pipe is defective
Snapdragon phones have run too hot for a while now, this one is no exception. It's always warm or hot to the touch, even when it's idle lol.

If it's warm while Idling you have an issue with the phone
Mine too..h870ds..not hot but warms..only doing light activities..surfing web,insta,twttr..is there anything to worry about?the warm feeling arise at the fingerprint scanner and camera part..

Phone Speaker gets hot when full volume
The only time my phone gets hot is when I listen to music on phone speaker with full volume, for some time. The speaker area gets hot.
Other than that with web browsing, Youtube etc not even warm to touch. (Also I have a case on, if it affects anything)

The speaker will warm up but that's because it maxes out at 4w which is insane for a phone speaker other than that ive played 3d intensive apps and my phone doesnt get above 38-44 degrees Celsius. Love this phone
My phone does never get warm :/

Same issue
If you are still having issues with a warm / hot phone, I'm curious what OS / flavor are you running ? I haven't tried a custom rom yet, I'm still on stock and it takes a lot to get my phone hot.. it's even stuck inside an otterbox which can't help with the heat being cased in plastic lol.
--edit, I ask because I want to move to a custom rom but don't plan on it if it's going to make the phone hot idle !

I'm really curious to know, when everyone complaining about warming and heating up u say it barely heats even in summer.
Please let meknow, outta curiosity, i wanna know.
Which country do you live in and by meaning hot summer, how much is the temperature during summer and where do you use your phone like, Air-conditioned environment or under a fan, or just using the phone under the mentioned environment without any ventilation. It'd be more helpful for me to further raise a concern with LG if mine is misbehaving!

Phone has not felt even the slightest bit warm to the touch no matter what I'm doing so far. Like literally stone cold 24/7.
Mine gets hot after playing 3D games. The heat is mostly at the top of the device around the camera area.
Fine in normal use though.
I've played a couple games for a while and it seems to only heat up on graphically intensive, but I mean that's expected. I played the stranger things game for about an hour and it didn't warm up at all. I switched to shadowgun legends, maxed the settings out, and it started getting hot within like 5 minutes. As Joe explained, it gets hot near the camera, but it isn't too bad and it cools down really fast, literally in a minute or so after closing the game.
Yeah, agree with all of the above. I should clarify the game I was playing was Honkai 3rd Impact on max settings which is fairly graphically intensive.

I tested cpu-z for you and got very similar temperatures. I was at around 28°c after turning my phone on. It went to around 31°c when scrolling through twitter and listening to Spotify. And after playing showdowgun legends for a few minutes it got up to 38°c.

I'm no expert, but since we have similar temperatures, I'd assume it's completely normal.

Hi..
Could test with the cpu-z app as to what temperature your set reaches when it's the warmest.
Mine has reached almost 39 degrees Celsius when using for everything other than games, for an extended period.
Sometimes though.
Usually it stays around 31 to 35 degrees Celsius on Cpu-z ( its peak summer time here in India, with daytime temperature always above 40).
Above what temperature should one get worried?

you "worry" above 80 degrees Celcius, but I dont like it to get much higher than body temp.
I does cool off fast, But it can get really warm sitting in the sun.
I leave mine in a holder on my dash while I drive, playing pandora via bluetooth, and it can get pretty hot.
A few minutes of use, Pandora playing through internal speaker. Heavy JavaScript use on web browser.
It should be noted that my OP6 is Rooted and DeBloated.
Still not clear on one thing.

and my device's battery temp (as on cpu-z app) went to about 41.2 degree centigrade.

Good luck with that in the summer!
I'm finding the screen does get noticeably warm to the touch at the top area near the SoC, just from normal use (such as using Chrome etc). Battery temp rises to about 35 degrees.
A little concerning I'd say.
Another disadvantage of glass back (beside dirt, fingerprints, fragility)

While Playing Asphalt 9 under Same Circumstances the temperature never crossed 41°C
The Heating Dissipation is Spot on and it quite literally makes that lower portion hot but it's tolerable and it cools down quickly.
865+ phones will always heat up it's quite normal the good thing is how is the heat dissipation just so that the performance never throttles and it's very good in this device.
Normal Usage never makes the phone heat up from the ambient temperature much (+/-4°C)
While X Mode does heat up the phone i prefer not using it as it doesn't make much difference (as the phone is already too fast) while playing PUBG/Asphalt and it drains the battery quite quickly.

yep couldn't agree more the X mode makes the battery drain much quicker i didn't like it at all....without using the X mode battery ain't draining much so yeah f them X modes...bout the heat mine doesn't goes above 38°C..but if im using the X mode it'll goes to 41°C while draining the batteries no thank you famiglia

Yes you are correct ROG3 XMode 100% Doesn't make any difference when you Play PubG bcoz the phone already have 865 snapdragon and 650 gpu. that is why everytime i played PUBG i dont need to turn on XMODE.
I keep playing Normal mode Off XMODE Smooth+90hz in pubg even my ROG 1 first generation.

Can anyone here speak on the differences between the 865+ and 865 versions in terms of heat? Do they both run uncomfortably hot or is the 865 better in that regards? thx in advance

To answer my own question, I did end up getting the 865+ version and so far, even with 2+ hours of gaming (Honor of Kings, capped at 60fps, X-Mode off), my phone has yet to hit 40 C. Usually hovers around 38 C.

OK let me clearify, 41c is extremely cool. The reason the Phone feels hotter to the touch than other phones is because the Rog3 has an amazing cooling system. It uses the screen and chassy to cool down the components which is extremely effective. Other phones hit easily 90c+ on internal components.
The fact that the phone gets 40+c hot is proof that the cooling works 100%. If you feel its too hot for your taste, get a cover or use a controller.
This phone is really cool compared to what I used to have. Only time I felt the phone hot was when I made a huge amount of bench as the phone recognize bench apps and go overboard on thermals.
With any games I don't feel much heat, it is like if I was using another phone only for web browsing or read mangas. With the huge copper chamber (for a phone) and the real heat sink on the back this phone really stay cool.
I concur with Danishblunt, the phone does feels warmer (or hotter, depending on taste) when gaming, but as opposed to other phones, the warm sensation is more distributed on the back of the phone, rather than just on a localized spot.
This is due to the heatsinks/vapor chamber cooling, so it does its job.
I bought a case (not the aesthetic one included on the box) and it feels good. Temperature wise, the sensation is less warm than without case.
