I'm on pre-order status right now, but is anyone else feeling really uncertain because of the lack of information regarding the performance of the two 13MP rear cameras? At this point, that's probably the only thing holding me back from a definitive jump. I currently have a Google Pixel, and the camera on this thing is stellar. It would be a hard blow for me to pay 700 dollars for a design I like more while also being a huge downgrade in the camera arena.
Edit: I've seen some of the twitter samples, but I heard those were likely poor in quality due to twitter. I don't know how much truth there is to that since I'm not an avid twitter user.
There's video and photo samples in youtube it seems like it cant match lg g6 camera quality.

I have searched high and low for actual photo samples and have not found any. The only samples I can seem to find are the two 360 video samples available from the recode event and a cohrtside viewing at some basketball game.

Just Google for "Essential’s President is Sharing Pretty Bad Photos He Took on the Essential Phone" and check ones at droid-life. These were shared and then pulled by Niccolo De Masi on his Twitter account.

Im not saying these AREN'T the PH-1 but... its some just a Youtube channel that shows random video. and the description states 360 video but we dont see 360? Am i wrong about that? The next one says camera shots or samples or w.e but then end with shots of the Moto Z? These are what people are going by?

I see the City scape photos your talking about though. I would like to first note that i can now see why people are saying what they are about the camera. I would also like to say however, that 2 photos of dont tell the actualy quality. i take ****ty photos with my s8+ all the time. for those that want to be optimistic and get the phone. It's still perfectly legitimate to believe the camera is able to take quality shots. We just haven't seen any yet haha. Biggest problem with this phone, Andy hasn't shown hardly anything on it at ALL. other than it's design, and its innovative Wireless USB tech. other than the normal sales hype, we REALLY don't know too much. Hell, they still havent finished water IP ratings yet. If you check their twitter they are always reporting saying we havent gotten official ratings back yet, check back soon! haha

Unless these photos were taken through a window, quality is not what you would expect from a $700 phone (will be much higher for me due to shipping to EU and customs). High noise and little details. I guess camera doesn't have OIS and not well optimized yet.
I reserved on the first day, but if camera quality turns out to be mediocre I'll probably buy LG G6 that will be around 300€ cheaper. Camera is important for me. I have DSLR but it's heavy.
IP rating, don't care much. Currently have Xperia Z1 and enjoyed waterproofing for the first 2 years. On the 3rd year water went in, so had to replace battery and vibration isn't working. I'm not swimming with the phone again
It's better to wait for reviews to get an answer to this question. When your the first one to buy a newly released phone, you're always jumping off a cliff, to a degree, and will have limited information about the real quality of many features on the phone.
Even if Essential was releasing good photos, I'd be skeptical that they were taken in ideal conditions, by professional photographers, and were just marketing hype.
my question for everyone who is the image sensor manufacturer, I am just curious if it is a Sony IMX or a total different manufacturer....
I remember finding the info once or so I thought
Related
in theory Sony Xperia Z3 has the same sensor of Z1, Z1 Compact and Z2, but with the new lens, camera firmware and a revised hardware support Sony promises great improvements
Actually new lens are 25mm for a good wide-angle, firmware seems to work better than previous Z2 and hardware should work better in low light conditions. Now you can raise the ISO to 12800, too. Autofocus is faster
Then we could use this thread to collect our shots taken from Sony Z3..It would be great to compare photos with the other devices
I will do once I get my Z3
Let's go!

Hmm.. They seem to be OK but not excellent.. Not sure if worth changing from my m8 (sure it's better camera on z3 but not THAT much)
I think it's a tapatalk resizing problem...it isn't good to upload high quality photos

I don't want to start any war or anything and my z3 is already in the post waiting for me but looking at these pictures I am really not sure if I should get it. I am compering side by side to m8 pictures and I could say that 55% of the time m8 makes better pictures..

Wait and do side by side. Then zoom and crop. The results will be very revealing to you. I had the M8 for 5 months. Great phone....great build quality....great UI....very fast and the boom sound is amazing. But the camera was very disappointing. Sorry but 4MP is still 4MP even if they are Ultra pixels.
I learned since getting this phone just how irrelevant mega pixels are .Is this better then my htc one? I imagine so,I cant do a comparison as i no longer have my htc but iam pretty sure this camera is better but is it ALOT better? I would have to say no.I expected the camera to be alot better then it is personally but i saw mentioned that it may improve after a firmware update so fingers crossed because if this is supposed to be one of the best camera's on a smartphone then the competition must be lacking

From the specs atleast the sensor size on z3 is bigger than htc one m8. So it should make a difference in low light photography

Thanks for the comparison pictures. I own a Z2 myself and the picture quality seems very similar to the Z3's.
Maybe it's just me, but I personally preferred the M8's pictures! They looked sharper and less noise, even if it can't zoom as much as the Z3's pics

most of these are average at best.
There's no way the M8 camera is better. It is one of the lowest rated cameras of any current smartphone. Many professional tests have been conducted, check multiple websites if you don't believe me.
It's possible you either have a faulty unit, unlocked your bootloader which broke the sensor software (read about it in another thread) or Sony need to release a firmware update to fix this.

Iam guessing a firmware update will improve things because i too am underwhelmed with the camera on this phone and i surprisingly thought the m8 pictures looked better in this thread which is kinda embarrassing for sony if you ask me! I havent played around much with the camera if iam honest but with the few pics i have taken i have found sharpness to be lacking ALOT and the flash is way too bright and ruining night time pics
Is the camera quality on snapchat with the 6p good like stock camera app? I have a lg v10 and its very fuzzy and grainy and am thinking of switching to the 6p if the cameras are good.
The reason Snapchat pictures suck is because they basically take a screen shot of the video instead of using the actual camera app. So every phone will take poor snap chats when compared to the stock camera app.

not sure where you got this info but i doubt its true. Mainly because when you go to record a video, the front facing camera zooms in a little which is exactly what the google camera app does when you switch from photo to video.

Snapchat for me has been really nice and crisp. Basically like taking a photo with the normal camera. Plus having an 8mp camera for the front facing makes them super clean. Although when recording video with it, the exposure goes way down and thats really annoying. I don't know anything about what that guy said but my Nexus 6P takes hella good pictures whether on snapchat (which i use A LOT) or on the camera app

All over. Just Google it. Here's some Reddit chat about it.

I'm planning to pick up a G6 this Friday to replace my G5. But I'm slowly becoming aware of the camera issues that are being posted. Is this something you think will get addressed with a software update, or should I wait a few weeks for the S8 even though I'm not a big fan of curved screens?
Sent from my LG-H830 using Tapatalk
What camera issues? Mine has been working great.
I've got no issues at all. I LOVE the camera. Even in auto mode it's amazing. Really really happy that they got rid of the laser focus. Photo attached is no editing just wide angle and hand held
There's a thread titled "LG G6: Is it worth buying?" where a bunch of people are talking about the bad camera quality.
Sent from my LG-H830 using Tapatalk
There's no camera issue, it's just not as great a camera as it should be. If you take photos in wide angle they are superb, but single lens shots are sub parts. It's digital processing is awful. Hopefully there's an update to fix.
Sent from my LG-H830 using Tapatalk
how's it compare to the GS7? I just pulled the trigger the other day and it's coming tomorrow. I could not find any full review articles or videos on youtube with the final software and hardware version. I wanted to see comparisons to the GS7. I finally got tired of waiting for reviews and went ahead and ordered it. Hope i made the right decision. I'm pretty picky about cameras.
I love the camera one thing I really really love is auto focus is much better than the lg g4 was. Also love that just tapping a a different spot on camera can easily adjust the exposure while maintaining a full frame focus. I'm the pictures at times from the gs7 may appear better but it also depends on what device they are being viewed on. I mean if I watch 1080 videos on my low end barely HD monitor th3 comparisons are useless. Sadly not enough pictures ever get printed. Plus wide angle for the win. Sample quick take from the beach on sunday.

Reviews already show the S8 selfie camera is awful too. What's the point of auto focus if it still makes you look like a cartoon and "beautify's" everything. Side by side comparisons online with the Pixel and iphone 7 show the S8 (and samsung) is still awful for selfies.
The selfie camera is a little blurry but not that bad. For 5MP it's to be expected. Yes, it's not as versatile as the back camera setup, but I guess if you're not used to having to plan shots to get the composition you want, it can seem crap by today's standards. blurry in darker shots, but does well enough for me. Using the filters that are on by default make it worse too. (Can't guarantee that the image I attached doesn't have any filters added as I don't remember when I took the shot. I think it is slightly filtered)
I was concerned every shot with the back camera would need to be "tweaked", but I'm surprised how well it does with auto. You can modify gamma on the fly too which is nice (and necessary with more difficult shots). Keep in mind though if you're cropping to 16:9, then it will affect perceived image quality. That can affect the blurriness of the non-wide angle lens tbh since it's the lesser of the two. Both take great shots though on automatic.
The wide angle is the best one of all three.
I attached a photo taken with selfie lens. You can judge for yourself. Personally, I think it looks fine. Most shots are going to be viewed on mobile so resolution won't be as important as the back camera. I don't use selfie cam too often though, but if it's your primary camera, then yes you will be disappointed by the step down and will likely want to go for something with a higher res like S8...
This is comparison of night shots of two back lens... wide angle versus non-wide angel camera... as you can see, both have their advantages and disadvantages.
---------- Post added at 04:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:21 PM ----------
Here are a bunch of microshots. Does it have it's weaknesses? Oh yes. Is it a bad camera. Not at all.
Pro Tip: Sometimes I notice sometimes you have to "zoom in" just a tad in order to get the autofocus to catch stuff up close but it's rare. My point and shoot does the same thing. (Also there is manual focus)
No issues at all with the cameras here. FWIW, I like them a lot better than the G4.
Just because of this thread, I had to try in near total darkness... It turned out pretty clear. I'm not disappointed at all. I came from S7 Edge, and I can say for a quick low light picture, it is a "little" better, but by no means is this camera a disappointment. But, when there's light, it's better than S7. I'm very happy with the phone.
I am having horrible camera pictures. Worse then the last few phones i've had. The panorama has double images and it's wavy. The reviews on youtube says it works good. all the pictures look like the grass and trees was painted with water colors. it's awful. I'm worried about what I"m going to do now. I can't keep my GS7 since I upgraded so there's no turning back unless i exchange my phone but for what model? I don't want a Galaxy with a curved screen so the options are limited at Verizon. I would upload some images but how do i post the images from my computer? The image button wants a url.

I tried auto mode with and without HDR. Btw there's no HDR button so I have to go in the settings every time I want to turn it on our off. Totally unacceptable. I tried manual mode too. I have it at 16:9 at the highest resolution. Is there a quality setting I missed?

I have got a screen shot of my settings. It was done in auto. I used the mode/filter called "1839". Also, if you tap on the object you want it to focus on, you'll see a slider (I circled it in other screen shot) which your can use to make adjustments to make pictures clearer in low light or put your own tweak on a picture.

Thanks. I knew i should have looked there. I'll take a look.
Multiple reviews and comparisons have shown the G6's camera performance to be comparable to the Pixel/S8/U11 and in some instances, outclassing them. The main area that keeps the G6 from being the definitive flagship camera is the added sharpening that makes images look less natural. Video mode is especially troublesome as it also has boosted color saturation. Is there a way to disable this post-processing or is it baked-in?
It's baked in. I was actually not too impressed with this camera as it oversharpens a lot and there's a lot of noise in images even in lighter conditions. You can tell they used a sensor that is used in even budget phones.
Shoot RAW and develop in PS Express our Snapseed, massive difference between jpegs from camera app vs ones processed from RAW, I showed a comparison in the photography thread.

I will try RAW. It is a shame that there is no video settings that can be adjusted. I wonder if there are any third party apps that can access hidden settings.

look that in 4k : https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2017/23/6/1497121124-fdfs.jpg wtf for a flag chip its very bad !
see here, crop on left from the OEM jpeg and the one on the right the jpeg from PS Express, the one on the right looks much more natural, and has way less processing. The noise cos its a 1600 iso shot.
They ruined the video quality with processing for no reason. It is the same as what Samsung did to their mirrorless cameras. They could have easily outperformed every other top camera manufacturer but they insisted on adding baked-in post-processing that sucked the life out of the image. There is no reason to add sharpening when everyone is using large, razor-sharp displays.
The S8+ video quality is pants too to be fair on 4k. My old pixel was too when any kind of low light was involved. 4k on android phones is pretty dodgy across the board with lots of pixelation.
The photo quality is proven now to be better than any other flagship phone. The trolls in this thread who can't even spell trying to run down the phone don't help their case.

Trolls? Live happily and clueless seems to work for you.
Here you can share all your best pictures taken with your new Oneplus 5T
lowlight shots aint bad out of the box :good:
Portrait Mode, unedited
From a gig last night. The camera is decent. Works if you put effort in it. This is taken with gcam. Gcam uses only the 16Mpix sensor (at least I think so.)

One of the pictures I took last night from my first attempts at astrophotography using 5T. It's difficult to do and time consuming considering its a 30 second exposure.
I haven't edited it, this is on ISO 1600 and 20" exposure.

that's a superb shot
---------- Post added at 07:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:58 PM ----------
has anyone tried using a third party app like open camera, camera fv-5, or snap camera with 100% photo quality setting?
Open camera is free and should give a good indication if photo quality is improved by reducing the jpeg compression that seems to be causing the oil color blur with the op software.

Thanks.
Tried opencamera also. Images came out very grainy and terrible looking. That shot above is taken with Google Cam. Probably the version which was first optimized for 820/821/835. The one with no hdr settings in the menu at all.
Okay so, what's really good with this camera? I've been seeing so many mixed reports of the camera being really good, and then the whole "oil painting" quality.
I'm waiting for my 5T in the mail, and this'll be my first OP device ever. Camera isn't super important to me, but I'd like to have something that out-preforms my current Nexus 5X.

If you don't care for the second sensor, not much in my opinion.
Lowlight is probably not bad, if you think brighter = better.
All OP5 / 5T comparisons I've seen so far showed a brighter image, but also more processing artifacts.
In my opinion their second sensor is just there to keep the portrait mode and doesn't offer much more as the lowlight capabilities
are realized through software processing. Don't see any reason why this processing shouldn't also work on the OP5's main sensor,
other than them wanting to have a selling point for the 5T.
Some samples which show the issue:

Btw, this is what their portrait mode produces outdoors in daylight: https://i.imgur.com/5x1ikOs.jpg
This is what my OP3 produces indoors with HDR+ (I stopped using the stock camera months ago because of how bad the postprocessing is):

There is just no competition.
The fact that most will look at their photos on their phone and that many samples online are downsampled is probably the reason many don't see this issue.
As much as I would like to upgrade to the OP5T, I am keeping my OP3 because of the camera.

I understand what you're getting at. However, your two example images from the 5T don't really demonstrate the issue you're talking about to the severity you're talking about. OnePlus's post processing isn't good and it does process detail out of the second image, but the detail loss is quite miniscule. And that aside, it's quite a good picture. The first picture was compressed due to imgur, so it wasn't really indicative. Also, since you'd probably be more knowledgeable on this topic than me, I wonder: other than the dot pattern issue at full crop, what's wrong with the GCam on the 5T? On the 5, it seems to work well.

It's a setting/option in the stock camera app.
