will updating now affect getting root? - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

just bought the 3g ram 16gig g5+ and will be hanging out a while before rooting and getting to custom roms as its still new, but wondering if its a good idea to update to latest available update it offers when i pull it out of the box? or does anybody think it may in the future prevent me from acquiring root and flashing twrp. Thanks guys

All current software for the g5+ are rootable.
This is not really an issue anyways, because Moto unlocks the BL for us, which is always the biggest hurdle. Update away!

5.0.1 has begun to roll out to the Moto G 2014

Well it looks like 5.0.1 has started to roll out to the Moto G 1st and 2nd generation. I hope it fixes the freezing problem I have on my xt1064 running 5.0
Post here if you receive and/or install 5.0.1, and let us know how it works out for you. Such as improvements, bugs, problems with installation, etc. Please include what model you have.

I think we can all safely assume that now, 5 weeks after starting, the "soak test" is now long over and done with. After all, Motorola stated that Lollipop would be out on the Moto G *before* the end of 2014... and guess what? Only 12 days of that left. Unless they're into cutting it fine, this IS the final release, folks.

To be frank, Motorola likely shifted from 5.0 to 5.0.1 midway the soak test. And 5.0.2 is pretty near as well, who knows if they won't shift development for it before this rollout ends.

What does that matter, when it's all Lollipop, after all? Would you prefer they release 5.0 and not a more updated, polished release version instead? They'll release on time, believe me.
Yep just got it, lets see what it shall bring!

It would also be nice if people would also make note of the baseband version associated with each release. There already been enough tears from fools flashing baseband firmware willy-nilly.
Okay, I had upgraded to 22.21.16 via TWRP using KennyWuLee's packaged tool. This morning I received a notice that I had an update available for 22.21.25 which I assume is 5.0.1. So like a dummy I went ahead and accepted. Now all it does is boot into TWRP. When I restart to system from TWRP it boots up just fine then after about 15 seconds reboots to TWRP.
I assume it is looking for the stock recovery which will then allow me to install the update? So will I be safe to go ahead and reflash the stock recovery, reboot and go from there? Or should I go all the way back to stock everything?
I have an XT1063.

To which question?
Are European buyers still being ignored? XT1068: no MFN, no update of any kind here. If I am interpreting Motorola forum correctly, they haven't released anything in the EU, not even a soak test.

You could be right.
I got this phone happy in the knowledge I'll always be running (nearly) the latest clean version of Android, instead I have a phone with a memory management issue running at least a month behind other continents.
Tongue in cheek aside, I do have some suspicions.
It stands to reason that the people most likely to join the MFN are those who like to tinker and who are eager to receive updates. These people are also the most like to unlock the bootloader. If something goes awry during an OTA roll-out test and the user cannot resolve the issue, support from Motorola can be requested, potentially resulting in a warranty claim, unless the device has been unlocked and was purchased outside of the EU... It therefore seems logical that Motorola would not do soak tests in the EU, where possible: It reduces the blowback in the unlikely event that there is a serious bug in the update.

That sounds like the most plausible reason they may have, if they have one. To be honest, I've got better things to think about than when a frivolous software update arrives for a non-cricital device, but your thoughts certainly are rational ones
Well I was part of the xt1069 Brazilian soak test and I have to say it's a bad joke. A lot of users didn't get the update, there was almost no support or even feedback from Motorola in the forum. And to finish it off, they had an issue with their forum software that got all comments deleted. I don't think EU users are missing much

G935U Nougat

Hi All,
I'm a little confused as to where us U firmware users stand with Nougat. I've seen differing reports of what the known plan is with this. I believe some are saying we're waiting for Verizon to release it to the 935u, otherwise I'm reading that we're on a quarterly update schedule and won't be seeing anything until April.
I bought my 935V from VZW and flashed over to unrooted U firmware - actually by using the normal flash method and then doing a firmware restore from verizon's utility to get full unroot. Not exactly a typical method, but it gave me peace of mind knowing everything is completely stock U.
Everything is running great so I'm not in urgent need of an update for any reason, but would like to see some new features.
Lemme know if anyone has any clues here as for what to expect. Thanks in advance!
Not exactly sure what you mean by going full "unroot".. unless you ment, you wanted the U firmware for a smoother "root" can you please clarify bubby?

Good to know. Thanks.
I had to root in order to flash U FW, but the root process we have for GS7 is really process heavy and battery draining. I wanted an unrooted version of the U firmware with no bullsh*t and good battery life so I unrooted and restored using the software tool.

Ah Gotcha, sorry I misunderstood the op. Maybe give the T or V carrier FW a spin till U gets released? I haven't upgraded yet but am tempted. Been using stang 5.0 rom and been pretty impressed. I'd say I would recommend it even with the faults of the eng boot.
I also believe I seen a "no root no bull**** playstore Nougat rom" by jkruse, or something to that effect. If that's something your into
Lots of cry babies over in the Samsung forums. I can see why everyone is so upset but Samsung never promised faster updates for unlocked variants over carrier models. I'm content waiting at least until April for the nougat release of the 935u. Screw Verizon bloat. It's not worth putting up with it for Nougat.
There are some articles with Samsung's new commitment for monthly security updates on unlocked devices. This should mean that the 935U will get Nougat this month with March security update.

Well, sorta agree with you. I'm patiently waiting for the U update to 7.0, but in the mean time I'm running the Verizon update on a backup device. I can't really enjoy 6.0.1's UI after having Grace UX.

Smart Switch PC can also do an in-place update to 7.0. It's the April security patch.
I've downloaded the nougat U firmware and can't get it to install over the latest VZW firmware, the one that came out in the last few days. Has anyone been able to, if so please outline your steps.

Yes i have the original UDP and the tethering option works. How ever i cant get the verizon video calling to work??
So from what I'm getting, to install (if I'm on Verizon Nougat), flash Unlocked 6.0 first, then smart switch to 7.0? Also, I read that someone had been having issues with using LTE while in a phone call, can anyone confirm? And what happened to all the other fix files, since I remember the first time flashing the unlocked software required more subsequent flashes as well.

Where the ____ is POTTER_RETAIL_7.0_NPN25.137-93-4_cid50

Is there anyone out there who knows why this firmware update and past updates for XT1687 take months after the OTA to become available and other models don't? I would genuinely like to understand this. It's nice to have updated firmware stored if/when it's needed. Is it nameless independent devs stepping up for the people doing what Lenovo won't do, providing support.

This has been a very confusion experience. I have XT1687 RETUS, I was using POTTER_RETAIL_7.0_NPNS25.137-83 before to lock my bootloader. With the bootloader locked I was still receiving OTA updates and flashing them with no issues. So I under the impression that POTTER_POTTER_RETAIL_7.0_NPN25.137-93-4 was still correct, but I've apparently been wrong about this. Is it possible to downgrade to nougat?

Yes, you can downgrade to nougat but you should remove the bootloader and gpt codes , so your device won't hard brick.

Well I just hate the fact that night mode was removed. Now when I use an app for blue light filter, it only works while using the phone. Not on the lockscreen not the pulldown notifications bar. An annoyance more than an actual issue but still...

Except if you do this, and happen to accept an OTA later it will hard brick if experience with previous Moto devices holds.

I don't think so, as you are using the latest bootloader with old firmware, after if you update also it just going to update as normal happeneds. If you won't downgrade your bootloader it won't brick at all.yes by updating there could a soft brick chances, but that can be recoverable by fast boot.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that this can happen, and did on Moto G 2015 and Moto X Pure. If you upgraded, then downgraded by fastboot flashing and skipping bootloader and GPT, then you take an OTA update back to the higher version it would hardbrick... No boot, no bootloader, no fastboot... falls immediately into Qloader 9008 mode. It related to the partition table, which is in gpt.bin, and how it resizes it. I know it doesn't make sense, but it definitely happens.
You could always reflash the full factory to upgrade though, that worked... But that OTA was bad news on a device that was downgraded.

You can flash a stock ROM that is the same version or higher, in the same software channel, on a locked bootloader... you cannot downgrade or use a different software channel with a locked bootloader.
Sorry, we kind of got off on a bit of a tangent there.

Correct... You cannot downgrade without an unlocked bootloader, and you cannot unlock the bootloader on an Amazon device.
Moto is now owned by Lenovo, since this occurred they have shown little interest in enhancing or changing anything they release for a device over 6 months old. Unless there is tremendous outcry, meaning like 10's of thousands of people... We tried to petition them to continue update on the Moto G 2015 a while back (something that was stated initially in the devices release) and got about 25,000 signatures. Lenovo didn't even acknowledge it existed. So if you want a significant change in a device, you are going need to get a fairly LARGE outcry from customers, like 50k+ I am guessing, before they would even consider thinking about it, and that isn't likely to happen.

Lol and for that exact reason, I will not purchase another Motorola device. So glad that the mid-range phone market is getting wider each year. I will purchase a Nokia 7.1 next. At least that phone will get guaranteed updates for the next few years.
Just adding to this thread, even if it were possible to downgrade the system to nougat, you would have problems with losing your IMEI. The fix would require root access, and again that's not possible on a locked bootloader.

Question: Unlock the bootloader before or after upgrading to Oreo 8.1

We have a new G5 Plus (running stock Nougat) that is prompting for the OTA update to Oreo.
Question: Will the bootloader be unlockable after the update to Oreo?
I intend to unlock the bootloader, but sometimes the ability to unlock it is blocked after an update like this. Sometimes, unlocking the BL before an update blocks the update.

BTW, in your opinion, do you think that the G5 Plus will get updates past Oreo?
That might seem like an unrelated question, but I'm looking at the idea of adding some audio mods that require root and don't mind waiting until the official updates have settled down. Then I'll unlock, root, etc.

Only via flashed custom ROMs will system software past Oreo exist on the G5 Plus. G series phones get slated for one major system update.
It would be better if you atleast get the unlock code while on nougat. There are issue in Oreo. Some people were having issues where the unlock data provided by the phone was said to be incomplete when pasti g it on Moto's site in order to get the unlock code.
