I just ordered the new Joying 7 inch (JY-UM135N2) head unit. I am curious about the best way to connect to the internet for music streaming and navigation. What are my alternatives? My cell phone service is with verizon. I am on a 10g plan that has been more than enough for me. I would rather not have to be dependent on my phone if it is not too much money. Could you please offer how you connect and what additional hardware I may need?
Thanks
Currently I am using my phone's hotspot to connect to my Joying HU to the internet. I am using an app called mobile Data Wifi HotSpot. I configured it to turn on when charging (I plug my phone it the charger when I get into my car) and to turn it off when it is not charging. It has worked very well for me.

T-Mobile offers the SyncUP Drive, which is great, it is a hotspot that plugs into the OBD2 port. Verizon has that HUM service, but I dont think it includes a hot spot.
Is there any way to fix the script and change the time from 3 min to 1 min in the Blank Screen or Black Screen(Funny they are both the same thing but different name)?
Or
Be able to put that little power button on the home screen

GrowlAudio have a model specific version for my car (growlaudio.com/nissan-navara) but finding real specs on it seems to be next to impossible.
All the suppliers have been able to tell me:
The units are not upgradable as in OS updates. OS 4.4 is the most stable of the OS available. Yes you can see other units with OS 5 and 6 available from china at a cheaper price but there is a known fault with them that they are unstable and crash a lot.
Price includes Growl unit with built in fascia, all cables and adapters needed for install, GPS antenna and free reverse camera.
Android Head Unit:
OS: Android 4.4
CPU: Quad Core Processor
RAM: DDR3 1Gb
ROM: 8G EMMC
SD: Built - In 16GB
Capable of reading 1TB external Drive
Mobile Connectivity : iOS and Android Devices
VIDEO: RMVB,MKV,MOV,WMV,AVI,MPG
AUDIO: MP3,WMA,WAV,OGG,FLAC
GPS MODULE: Support
GPS Navigation software: Sygic, Waze and other android compatible maps. Capable on connecting to WiFi via Mobile Hotspot or wifi connectivity
Bluetooth Audio and Handsfree Calls: Supported
Steering Wheel controls: Supported
Rear view video: Automatic Backup Camera turn on when reversing
Other users that have purchased and installed the unit seem to think it's the best thing ever, but every video I can find of it is slow to startup (30-40 sec), reverse camera not coming on till full boot. And no one I talk to is able to provide any details on audio quality.
What I am looking for in a HeadUnit:
Required:
* Reverse camera capable of being used within a few seconds of ignition
* Bluetooth hands free with iPhone compatibility
* Music streaming from either iPhone or USB / Flash storage
* Google Maps / GPS compatible
* 3G/4G sim/USB Dongle compatible
* Steering Wheel Control support (CANBUS)
* Audio quality at least equal to or better than stock
* Responsive screen / controls
Optional / Extras
* Multiple camera support
* Side-by-side picture
* Able to connect to iPhone Bluetooth, Internet, OBD Reader/Torque, TPMS at the same time, or at least without having to go into settings and change connected device
Does anyone have any suggestions of a suitable HU?
I've been digging for info on these, reading Amazon reviews, reading threads here, reading marketing on the mfr/reseller websites and was contemplating starting a thread for this. In lieu of starting another thread I figure to just contribute on yours. It all started not long ago when I finally installed a 2-year-sitting-in-closet Pioneer Appradio 3... what a piece of junk!!! (but it does sound good)
Is anyone comparing the pros/cons of these things? It's pretty difficult to compile information on them when there are a ton of brands nobody has heard of combined with new hardware/software coming out all the time. From what I've read there are a few major dealbreakers that make me want to wait, after all who wants to swap their head unit out on any regular basis?
I head not heard about sticking to 4.4, why are 5.1 and 6.0 not good? I read somewhere they aren't as snappy but in any video I've seen they look fine.
I'll put my lists here and maybe others can chime in with what they want/like/dislike so we can paint a bigger picture for these head units.
Here are all the things that make me hesitant to buy one of these right now:
Dealbreakers for me:
No hands-free voice control for things like Android Auto, Google Now, Google Maps, Calling... "OK Google"
Boot times any more than 5 seconds.
Lack of external microphone - I know I can add one but geez is it too much to ask for a jack?
(some may have) independent volume for media/nav/phone/etc
Cons:
No ability to USB tether to use phone's internet connection (someone's probably done this here)
Seemingly weak future update support
Problems that can be handled with apps and mods:
No light sensor for auto dimming
speed dependent master volume change
Here's what I would put on a wishlist:
Must haves:
fast boot time (<5-10 seconds)
voice control
external microphone (or jack so can add)
option resume playing last thing on startup (car start)
Independant volume for Media/nav/phone/etc
Good audio quality
Like to have:
permanent button for Nav app
headlight or auto dimming
speed dependent volume
DVR support for dashcam AND reverse camera input
USB tethering option for data connection
ability to work with aftermarket bluetooth steering wheel remote
full Android Auto support with voice commands
ability to update in the future
Bluetooth 5 with internet connection sharing would be nice (IPSP)
The Newsmy Carpad 4 has some things I love: 4G SIM card capable, 2 camera DVR with ability to act as a car security system and send alerts to your phone, but it costs way too much and will surely come down like every tech does in the near future.

Joying has nice stuff and I've seen reviews that describe their low-power "dormant" mode that keeps the unit ready for a zero-delay startup even after the car is parked for a day (some units seem to only have a short dormant period before they shut down)... dormant time would of course be all dependent on how much power they draw whilst dormant.
ATOTO claim they can handle voice commands: http://www.myatoto.com/index.php?m=content&c=index&a=show&catid=15&id=5
This is just the tip of the iceberg, I know. I can never seem to find one that does everything I/we all want, and that means time to wait. Anyone compiled up-to-date info so we can make an informed decision?

From what I've been able to read, you will not get this in any pure Android head unit. Its simply not possible. Do you know Android phone/tablet that is capable of powering on in less than 5 sec?
Sure they can all 'wake' in that time frame, but that's because they are running from a battery. Yes the car has a battery, but the constant drain from the head unit being in sleep mode will likely flatten the battery if the car is not started in 3-5 days.
Your demands list is something more inline with an Alpine/Kenwood/Non-PureAndroid head unit.
The fairly new Joying Intel Sofia Head Units do go into a deep sleep and only draw about 10 mAh once the vehicle has been shut off for five minutes or so. To clarify, my JY-UL134N2 unit only takes a second or two to start up after being off for days, and it begins playing music from the Sandisk 200GB micro sdxc card in a few seconds. It will also display the reverse camera instantly like the older rk3066 and rk3188 units. Please note that this HU is in a spare vehicle that only gets used every few days or on weekends, and the battery drain has not been an issue at all. Please also note that if the system is shut down completely (not in dormancy mode), the boot time is 15 seconds to a minute depending on how loaded up the system is with apps etc...
Anyway, regardless of the start up time, I doubt you will find any Chinese Android Head Units that will check all or even most of the boxes on your wish list out of the box. To date, they all appear to need software and or hardware mods in order to work half way decent and even then they are far from perfect. For sound quality, Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer, or Sony would be far better out of box. The bottom line is that for the cost, the Chinese Android Head Units can be fun to tinker with and decent with work, but you get what you pay for when it comes to sound quality (IMHO).
Best of luck,
R

This is what I'm looking for! How do you find the HU? Would you recommend it to aynone?
Google for Joying, they have a fairly decent website. I definitely noticed that feature mentioned and demonstrated in some YouTube videos of newer Joying units and seems like a winner... Boot time is my biggest gripe (without having ever owned one of these). I'm not sure of the downsides for Joying units although I think they don't have external mic jack, will look into that and report back.
I should have been more specific, a usable dormant fast-boot mode that can do 24 hours before shutdown/draining top much battery would be totally usable... That way the daily driver fires up the head unit right away.
So what head unit do you guys think checks off the most boxes for you?

I ordered this off their website since it was cheaper than ebay/amazon by $30-$40 dollars. $309. Because my order was delayed as they waited for new units, they offered me an ODB connector (which did not arrive with the unit).
I received the new unit that claims Android 8.0 last week and had it installed today. So far, so good. However, I think its actually running 6.0 (based on a selection of icons offering me Marshmallow 6.0 option). The install went fine except for the canbus adapter I bought off Amazon did not work, so I've asked their support for help in what would allow me to use steering wheel controls. The mic they supplied has a cable that was only half as long as I needed to get up to my mirror, so its mounted on the dash and the clip is very small and wouldnt have worked anyways.
I've loaded up Nova Launcher with a bunch of widgets and installed Spotify, XM Radio, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Scanner Pro, Chamberlain MyQ, Swiftkey Keyboard, Transparent Weather and Waze. I am using a Personal Hotspot on an iPhone (AT&T) and a Galaxy S7 (Samsung). The location for time zone wouldnt pick up mine, it kept defaulting to China and I had to manually set them to my time zone.
Resolution is very sharp. It's pretty snappy and I've had no problems listening to whatever audio app I want while using Waze.
The unit did hang when I went through an area of bad cell coverage and had to be turned off and turned back on to get working again. I also noticed a slight wine through the radio that I believe is linked to the Live Wallpaper I was trying out. When I went to a blank screen, the noise went mostly away. I havent been able to get "Ok, Waze" to work yet (three finger tap works). I have yet to try Ok, Google. The unit boots quick after the first boot up (right away really, much faster than my Alpine unit in another car).
I installed this in a 2012 Ford F150 - I already have a rear camera in my rear view mirror, so I dont have one hooked up to the unit. I am using a powered JL subwoofer and separate Rockford Fosgate amp for my speakers. I do have a slight alternator whine when I have the volume turned all the way down.

Hey now! Researching for a friend that just decided to replace HU. Very interested - please keep reviews and details coming!
Couple questions for you now please?
1. Volume knob - responsive/no lag? (for the wife..)
2. FM radio reception is good? (also wife)
3. Aux video out (to headrest screens) - typical composite (yellow RCA) out?
3.1 All content to aux (ie mirrors the HU display) or only certain content/apps? (or can choose?)
And last question regarding tech support / Pumpkin
4. Do you have any experience with them and their tech support? Would you call them: awesome/great/ok/meh/****? Their support?
Thank you.

1. Yes, volume works, is responsive with no lag.
2. I only played a couple of stations, but no reception issues (when I was out of cell coverage, I switched to radio no issues)
3. There are two yellow RCA video outs (see product page)
3.1 I don't know the answer to this since I didn't use these features.
4. They are on a 12-hour clock from us, so answers are usually next morning and I've always gotten a response next business day. I would call it "better than expected:. I wrote about the missing ODB connector and they wrote to say its on the way.

Great info man, thank you!
Hope you put up more experiences with it. Watching with great interest..
Overall, I am really enjoying this unit - its very responsive and the instant on is a great feature. The only thing I havent yet resolved is the 3-4 minute delay in connecting to an already powered on hotspot. Ive turned off notification of open wifis to see if that helps and will try turning off and on the hotspot. Basically I put an iPhone 8 Plus in the glove box with it plugged in for power so its running all the time - once a day I have to enable the hotspot, but its always on when I start the truck up. Just annoying it takes so long to connect to it.
quick question is the home screen customisable or are the icons and widgets fixed
You can customize the unit by using another launcher. Nova would be my first choice...
Correct, I switched right away to Nova (paid) as I use that on my phone. I've done just about everything I do on my phone here - widgets, etc.
Thank you for the update on this unit! I have an older model pumpkin stereo running 4.4 and it has gotten very laggy. I've tried factory resets to no avail (I'm using a customer ROM though). The lag is mostly on Google Maps (very slow to start and bring up navigation) and Pandora (plays okay but starts skipping near the end of songs).
I'm really thinking of upgrading to this unit. Since I had the older model, I bet I can just swap the head unit and keep all of the existing wiring. I really like the idea of the 1 second boot-up. With my current unit, it takes me at least 1-2 minutes to get music going (after boot-up, slow app startup, etc).
Can you tell me if Google Maps/navigation is okay? And Pandora?
Looks like the unit is avalable on AliExpress for $290:
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/pr...er-GPS-Navigation-4GB/612847_32853310272.html
It's even a little cheaper through their mobile app with coupons (about $281).

Google Maps is fine, although I am using Waze mostly. I will probably download an offline google map just for backup. I have Pandora installed, but have not yet used it - Spotify and XM Radio apps work as expected. I'll try out Pandora on my way home today and let you know.
If you can get it for $290, I'd say its a heck of a deal and worth the upgrade for sure.
It's an MTCD/E head unit, specifically a Klyde (KLD) PX5.
See relevant MTCD forums for all the info.
Pandora and iHeartRadio also work perfectly; no lag.
I'm still trying to get my iPhone hotspot to crank up quicker - strange that the unit can see WiFi all around me right away, but the iPhone takes longer to recognize. I'll try my Verizon S7 Edge to see if thats any different.

I have resolved the connection delay with my iPhone - it was an issue with the phone. I finally found a post that suggested having an apostrophe in the phone's name interfered with its discovery. When I removed it, the phone now picks up the hotspot wifi pretty quickly (starts connecting in seconds and obtains an IP).

Thank you for checking! I just ordered the unit from Aliexpress, got it for $281 after discounts.
Good to know about the wifi. I also tether my current stereo to my phone so it's good to know there are no issues with the head unit in that regard.

Have had this unit since August 2nd. I Have had issues sense install.
Sense install the following hasnt worked
Mirror Link
Km/h instead of MPH
Internal mic doesnt work
No in call sound
First week wouldnt connect to Play Store
When the unit is first powered up volume is 15
Has a high pitch buzz when ever using the AM /FM app.
Sides buttons dont light up.
Contacted the seller, seller stated " must me a install issue " ha ha. I nicely stated, ," That isnt possible " . After a few other messages. I requested a return, needless to say i was told to keep the unit and got a full refund. Thinking to myself GREAT. Now i have a useless paperweight. Desided to use the good ole Google Search option. Desided to try my luck and message the seller again. And request the factory settings code, and how to change a few settings. Seller gave me the code ( 8888) .but told me nothing else could be changed.
Going into the Factory settings.
If i turn the buttons lights on. They stay on about 10min after i turn the vehicle off. And cant change from white. Even though in the factort settings i change the color.
Have it connecting to Play Store now
Turned down the amplifier slide, so at turn on is only 2.
Anyhow. I am trying to see if i can get maybe the settings numbers for the rest of the stuff
ALSO.... figured sense its a free unit. I would see if i can buy the extra options for these radios and solder the PCB boards in. I took the radio apart. And there are SEVERAL empty spaces. Some have port installed some do not. Any part numbers would be GREAT
EXAMPLE: DVB-T receiver
4g GSM Sim slot ( will the Sim800L work)?
Mirror link receiver?
The only 3 ribbons being used is
Bluetooth antenna
Front buttons
Lcd display
And a 2 wire ( red/black)
Once i figure out how to upload pics i will do so.
Would also like to look into changing the ROM The ROM loaded on it looks REALLY cheesy. With no wallpaper or anyway to change any settings. Even in the factory settings. Options are there but nothing is ever enabled.
Haha
You got your "refund and keep it", and you STILL message the seller for further 'product support'?
Didnt want the refund. Just want a good working unit. I did buy a second unit from the seller for my other vehicle and 1 for my son as well.
Anyone??

I Have the following Unbranded Android Unit:
2 Din 9 Inch Android 8.0 Universal Car Radio Double Din Stereo Gps Navigation
Here is the Firmware
Android: YT9217_00002_V004_20190729
Android OS: Android 8.1 Go
XY Auto 3.0 ( 8227L)
Can Bus : 3.0 ( 8227L)
DDR: 1GB
Flash: 16G
CPU: A7 1.3ghz x4
Display: 1024*600
MCU: 3.1 ( 8227L)

Once your get everything working. You should copy your rom on a flash drive and send it to me. Ill pay you for it.
These are the Units i have
I had similar problem with the mic not working so I opened it up and there is a place on the main board to connect a mic. £3 mic off ebay, cut plug off and solder straight on the board and it works perfectly now

Did this only fix the mic issue? Or did it fix the whole incall issue?
I have sense bought yet ANOTHER ($190) 9". This one has no sound at all, no mic, half the features do not work.
Also have bought 2 ( TWO) more of the ( $200e) 10" units with the 6.0 Marshmallow firmware this time. that were suppose to have 4g sim reader options. BOTH units with following issues.
Missing one of the antenna jacks.
NXP6851 sound chips removed
Bt function connect but does nothing
Brightness bar does nothing
Volume full blast when turned on ( factory amp setting at zero)
Takes 2-3 minutes to find available wifi connections
Just wish these companies would just allow us to friggin root them. Instead of just selling us locked display dummy device's!!!! It really is a crap shoot with these. Buy 5, each one with perform differently.
Spend $50 on ebay for a unit OR spend $300 on ebay for one. Same outcome. Same with Amazon, same outcome.
Unit was in the car when I bought it. Steering wheel controls were not connected either but managed to figure that out eventually
Update?
Hey any update on your unit I have 1 too and would love to root it if any one has any advice that would be great
Ok. So far. I have EVERYTHING working. Except for the mobile network. Have tried 3 activated sim cards. And no service yet.
what did you do to get the reverse camera working? I have the same unit and cannot find the reverse camera configuration. I have the camera and reverse trigger connected and verified, but the unit does nothing when going into reverse. I cannot find a mention about reversing in the configuration anywhere. Any ideas?

I have the same unit, anyone knows how to switch between backlight on and off ? I know the illumination wire does that but is there a quick switch button ? Because if there isn't, it is a big face palm.

If this isn't an April Fool's joke, get an app like CPU-Z and take a look at the reported Android API level. Android 10 is API level 29 but I'd bet it'll report level 28 or lower. For some raisin these sellers like to lie about trivial things like this.
my friends i need your help i bouth a chinesee android out it is using the zq mtk1b but it gets rebooted every 3 minutes and it is so annoying the android outo is nor recognized so it has a lot of issues can please support me
hello friends, I was wondering if you can help me, my CANbus looks like its working and the steering wheel works too, however, the stereo reboots every 3-4 minutes... the thing is that if I connect something it gets frozen, and a couple of seconds it reboots, if I open an app it gets frozen, if I click on any button of the stereo it will work one or three times but then it gets frozen and reboots it again, I'm not able to listen to anything because the stereo reboots all the time many times... I tried with android 9 same error I updated to android 10 still the error, please can you help me with some ideas, I really believe it is a hardware issue and not software. regards
