OTA updates question

I don't own this phone yet, but I have a question about OTA updates:
who releases them? the carrier, the phone manufacturer or google?
My problem is that I'd like to know if buying this phone (or any other android based phone) now will let me uses future versions of google android.

OTA Updates are provided by Carrier or Google & not Manufacturer in case of HTC, HTC has said, they will be providing Updates In an different way like they provide to Other HTC Devices...
OTA updates are most likely 40-60 Mb...
Post any further Questions to be answered...
thanks for the quick answer. Now I'm starting to better understand, and I will ask you another things:
- can OTA updates move from 1.5 to 2.0 (and so on) when it will be released?
- how can I get OTA updates directly from google and not from the carrier?
(I don't think that carriers will keep releasing updates for old phones. I'd like to keep the phone for at least 3 years, while always having the latest software version)

You can get OTA updates to any software version. When 2.0 is released, it will most likely be pushed OTA. As far as 2.0 (Donut), its release date has not been announced, but some are expecting it 2H2009, most likely 4Q.
Who you receive your OTA updates from depends on who you purchased your device from (or, which ROM you're running). Google pushes OTA updates to their developer ROMs. T-Mobile pushes updates to their retail devices. &c. Also, not all devices/carriers/updates run on the same cycle. T-Mobile UK received the 1.5 (Cupcake) update about 2 weeks before T-Mobile US did, and both of those pushed updates were after the ADP OTA update.
I'm running the Daldroid ROM (in South Africa on Vodacom (Vodafone))
Is there any way to figure out whether the ROM is configured to get OTA updates? and/or which servers it's trying to get them from?
J.
So I have to trust my carrier, and to hope that he won't stop releasing OTA updates after, say for example, 1 year.
I can't really understand why this thing works in this way: in computers updates are deployed by the program company, not the manufacturer.

Will galaxy s3 neo get official lollipop update?

I am thinking to buy this phone and I will get disappointinted if samsung stops updating it.I know it's too soon to talk about another big update, but I think that the S3 neo can handle the lollipop because it has 1,5 gb ram and better cpu gpu than the older S3.
What do you think?

If you read my previous post on my experiences with Kitkat on the S3 Neo then you should not base your purchase decision on whether lollipop update will come to the neo. Price wise I got an excellent dual sim phone which I use extensively as my daily device. Quad core, 1.5gb ram, 16gb memory, excellent battery life are enough reason for an average user like me to like a phone like this one
Anyway if you have the money it would be better for you to get the latest models if updates worries you.
If you want you can install CM12. Look for it in this forum

Yes I agree. But for two sims doesn't work properly for calls on second sim, NFC doesn't work and also another bugs. So the development team must considered that there are a lot o clients that uses this cellphone. But in fact, it is my opinion.
No lollipop

I now don't say you that samsung don't develop lollipop for we.... but i'm here for say you... NO LOLLIPOP, it have a known bug: BATTERY, will survive a bit... and the sdk are not sopported from the best root service (Xposed for example...) soon or later developer will relase some <root> mod for lollipop design. Now you can try A3 Rom for our s3 neo from @t-shock !
I don't think there will be an official release.
Lollipop is coming on s3 Neo (Hopefully)

So the million dollar question is if Axon 7 will get anytime Android O or Not

So few weeks ego we had Google announcement for next major version of Android OS and since ZTE in the recent past not had a good reputation of providing major software upgrade and support for extended time so what do you thinking all of you Axon 7 users?
Will we get the next software version or stuck with Nougat and that’s it and no more software support and development.
Keep in mind that Oneplus already announced that 3/3T will get Android O but from ZTE we didn’t hear anything till now.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Simple answer... No I don't think it will officially. This will be over a year old by the time it's even released for Pixel.

I don't know shlt about custom ROM development, but why do you think that development would stop if ZTE stops making official updates? That is not the case on a lot of other old devices, for example without going too far back the Moto G 2 (2014) stopped receiving updates on Marshmallow, but pretty much as soon as Nougat rolled out, we got CM14. Even that old HTC HD2 phone got Android N after 7 years...
The only reason I can think of is the kernel stuff... again, no idea
I think it will get the update, the hardware is capable and the phone runs great so i don't see why not.

Oh, if only that would be enough for OEMs to continue releasing newer versions of Android for their devices. If that would be the case, almost all device generations from the past 3 years would get Android O, because the hardware is more than enough for it to run smoothly. My old Galaxy S1 (end of support at Android 2.2) and S4 (end of support at Android 5) were running Android Marshmallow and Nougat absolutely amazing and far better than any of their older OEM rom.
But on the Axon on the other hand: On custom roms as long as Daydream isn't running as fine as it is on stock roms, i am unfortunately stuck on stock and hoping for the good development community to claim that last hurdle for me to finally switch over.
Would anyone keep their Axon 7 long enough to notice whether or not O comes out? ZTE doesn't support Lineage OS, the radios are weak and unstable, the camera gets dust in it, the OIS burns out, Do Not Disturb still malfunctions, the Settings UI is incomplete, the microphones cut out, etc. Those with battery drain issues will reaching end-of-life soon.

Those don't really happen to everyone... Except for the radio stuff. I even took apart my phone and there isn't any dust below the lens. And i'm not living inside a Class 10 Clean room...
My DND mode is working just fine, mic fine, and if you have battery drain you can RMA or at least reflash a full stock system if it's not a hardware problem

no oem supports lineage, but you're right. they kind of promised to support cyanogenmod. weak radio drives me crazy, sometimes it loses internet for a few moments, i have this phone since january and have no dust in camera, and ois works well. tired of stripes in app in low light though. dont know about do not disturb. settings are complete garbage. generally i use polish language and phone is half polish half english.. that's a joke as i got it through official retailer in poland. about microphone - i got dirt in there, had to peel it off with a needle. same happens with speakers grills all the time. have no issues with battery though.
i think this phone might get android o, but sadly it might be its last update. and more sadly, the update itself might not be good quality

I'm not saying all the problems exist at once, but they're common and still happening. I just had ZTE clean the dust out of my camera and my radio frequently cycles off and on. Some people can't stop rapid battery drain even when the phone shows that it is not awake.
I haven't had an OPPO in a while because they don't have the right LTE bands, but they used to fully support 3rd party ROMs. Flashing and anti-bricking features were built into my Find 7.
After reading your posts about the radio problems and dust in the camera, I haven't notice no one of those drawbacks. So I'm in France and my career Bouygues give me a very strong signal, most of the time in 4g+ and no dust problem. I'm with the stock Nougat B04 (Android 7.1.1) and very happy with it.

I think the main reason to stay stock is the fact that there aren't any good alternatives. Pretty much all the posted ROMS have some deal-breaking bugs in some way or another. Pretty disappointed by the scene for this phone. It's a great device and I haven't had the issues discussed in this thread but looks like absolutely no one's interested in it. My only annoyance is the fact that they claimed how open this phone would be but it's got tons of nonsensical restrictions I've never come across before like not being able to set your own default dialer app without installing a custom ROM and outside app call recording does not work - which ZTE shows no signs of adding as a feature to their mandatory dialer app.

I dunno how it works in your country, but these settings should get you by. I find them to be universal so far. I get full 4G LTE on stock.
Name: [Bouygues] (or whatever name you want, doesn't matter)
APN: Internet
APN type: default, supl, hipri
Then save and switch to the newly created APN.
Those are the settings that work for me, no problems at all.

Yes, that is probably best if you've tinkered with the band settings. It can be a headache and mess your internet settings up. Try the suggestion I gave you after the fresh install. That won't be a problem if you want to delete it later.
After reading the issues done if you guys are having... i can only suggest to get the Chinese variant ???. It's a brilliant phone for me and I've had no issues with it... Probably the best phone I've had. I have sitting in the draw 2 note 4, note 3 s1, xperia x1( collectors item those 2).... But this phone as far as I'm concerned is the dogs bolloks..
Only thing for me is now that the sun is out.... The screen doesn't get bright enough in the sun

I have the A2014G for a couple of months now and no problems at all.
No dust or radio problems.
If it would get Android O?, probably not, but I think they will give us a final 7.1.2 release before passing to work in the Axon 8 (or whatever the name is), and probably we would get some security patches every 3 months.
Personally, I wouldn't mind if they would do that, because pretty much all the versions of Android are similar since Marshmallow, and for me Android O brings nothing interesting enough to want the update.
ROM's are all based in Lineage, so all they share the same problems and issues, so for this phone, I would say stay in stock if you really want a fully functional phone.

Mate 9 to get Oreo soon

https://www.phonearena.com/news/Huawei-Mate-9-to-receive-Android-8.0-Oreo-update-soon_id98317
Cool. Maybe we will see an update by the end of the year though I expect it to come after Xmas.
Yes, and which version will get it first? Chinese, European, or US? Anyone want to hazard a guess?
Typically, the Chinese get it first, then India, middle east, Mars, Pluto, Alpha Centuri, THEN the Usa MIGHT get it.
Personally, it really doesn't matter to me. Marshmellow was stable on my Mate8, as was Nougat. Nougat is stable

The new features are not that important. Only thing that's be really great to have is the filling API so you can use password managers easily.

I'm really excited about Oreo's tunable doze. Well, assuming Huawei release enough sources to let us take any advantage of it. Standby time on this phone is not great. I have maxed out LTE signal, I live across the street from my cell tower and it still loses 5 to 8% overnight. Greenify was no help, nothing's running, no abnormal wakelocks etc. It's just bad apparently. I can only imagine how bad it is for anybody that has less than perfect signal where they live.
Strange I lose 1 to 2 percent overnight

A little off topic but battery usage on the Mate 9 is odd for me. Here is what I noticed:
If I unplug my phone then dont use it all overnight, my phone goes into deep sleep for 97% of the time as reported by BBS. This results in a battery drain of about 0.2-0.3%/hour.
Even if I just turn on my phone for 1 sec to see the time, and do not use it at all for the next few hours, my phone never gets back to as high a deep sleep figure. Wake time with screen off dramatically increases and my battery drain goes to about 1-1.5% per hour.
If I use GPS, battery drain is really really bad.
All that being said, I am hopeful Oreo and EMUI 5.X or 6.X improves on battery life.
I use appops ... To turn off lots of apks like messenger , fb , I deny lots of the permissions and I still get 3 days easily on battery life

The US version of the phone will be getting oreo, no "might" to it supposed to be sometime in December, they already had a beta for the US version (long closed) and that build is available on ff (MHA-L29 8.0.0.321 (C567)). I installed it and so far it's just as stable as nougat, not any substantial changes except for the kernel jump to 4.4 from 4.2 and the October 5 security update. Huawei Oreo update includes project treble which will make further updates easier and hopefully more timely.

I haven't seen any real bugs so far, most of the "bugs" reported with Google and Nexus devices had more to do with that particular devices HAL than the Android framework itself, if tried pretty much all the features so far and haven't noticed any issues, especially this that have been reported by Google pixel and Nexus users. IMHO since Huawei manufactures their own silicon and writes their own HAL code they are probably a little better equipped than companies (lg and htc) that just are relying on closed binaries and documentation from SoC suppliers.

Same here...the "321" is as stable for me, as 7 was.

I haven't rooted in years. Last phone I rooted was a Galaxy Note. After the Mate2, 8,9 I've never had the need to root.
No custom Oreo ROMs

As far as I know there isn't a root yet for the Oreo ROM, no Xposed either. The mate 9 is on the list to get lineage 15 which is Oreo, but there is really no telling how long it will take to get a usable ROM from them.

Is ZTE going to release any more updates?

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if any of you know ZTE was going to provide any software update on their stock rom. From what I read, it does seems to be very unclear considering what's happening with the US government. So far, I haven't rooted my phone yet since my old LG G3 started to have wireless connectivity issues after I flashed a few roms on it and I continued to have those issues after I put the stock LG rom, so I'm a little bit scared to try again. Still, I'm wondering if any of you guys knows if there's a good rom out there that can work fine and that has the lasted security patch. If not, I'll probably think about switching phone, since I don't really like the idea to use a phone that's unsupported.
Thanks
There won't be any more Nougat updates as it's up to the ROM (Nougat B10 for my global model) where it bridges to Oreo and now Oreo even if it's released or leaked won't get updates.
Just my opinion but can't see how it could go any other way.
I guess for longevity, all you can look at is if any custom ROMs are long term and bug free. I think all custom ROMs for Axon 7 have at least one proper bug which affects calls or camera. One reason I stay stock.

Thanks for the answer.
At least I'm not the only one to feel that this is what's going to happen. I love the Axon 7, but if it doesn't get updated, I should probably go for the Samsung Galaxy A8 since my carrier has a pretty good deal on it (15$ CAD over 24 months). The Nokia 7 doesn't seems like a really good phone as well with updates directly from Google. I think I'll have to shop a little bit.
