I have acquired a device from someone with a Vodafone subscription. The latest update on that one is PDA G950FXXU1AQDG, the newest from PHN is G950FXXU1AQEB, i cant get the update via OTA or Smart Switch. Im also seeing "Software serviceprovider" and there stands VDF, so i guess its a simlock? Is this removable with flashing the PHN odin files or do i have to go to a store for that?
If you check out vodafone website or Google vodafone SIM unlock you fill a form out give the ime number off the phone then wait til you conformation about it being unlocked might take a few days but it's free of charger.

Obviously, there are differences with the stock rom that will come with either version. However, as I am planning to flash around a bit, this won't matter.
However I've heard that on a branded device, if I flash a different rom then accept an OTA update it will simlock my phone. Is this correct? If so, then will getting an unbranded device be better?
Thanks.
Let's also assume the T-Mobile phone is initially locked and I have to purchase a code to unlock it.
Bump - would really like to get a response on this matter.
I don't know the answer to your question, but my Galaxy is from T mobile and is unbranded and unlocked out of the box.
My SGS is from T-Mobile UK, but I can't really answer your question either.
I can say that the device is both externally and internally unbranded (I can't say about SIM locks, but I assume it has one). No splash screens, no "Web'n'Walk" Internet icon. The firmware supplied is:
PDA: I9000XXJF4
PHONE: I9000XXJF3
CSC: I9000TMUJE6
Only the CSC is custom, I'm guessing just because it comes set up with the T-Mobile APN settings etc.
What I'm interested in is whether, if I made a nandroid backup, what base ROM I'd need to return to the phone to stock.. JF3 is the only one available it seems.
I've just bought a T-Mobile UK SGS on ebay, brand new, still sealed, it was an 'unwanted upgrade'.
I can confirm there is no branding that I've found so far, and there is no sim lock (I'm using it on O2, everything working fine right out the box), I don't know if this is the same for all the SGS that T-Mobile are selling.
another one - even the box was unbranded.
No W'n'W application as I was expecting even!
Completely unlocked.
Suppose in the case I bricked my phone and I don't know the baseband version of it. Now what is the option to recover? Flash stock firmware via Odin but don't know the baseband??? What will happens if I flash another country stock firmware?? Will the phone hard brick?? Or it will work fine?? Thank you
The worst case is that your sim card will not work with that software. This is only if your phone is carrier locked.
If it is unlocked, or neverlocked as others put it, then you can flash any firmware you like, as long as it is for your respective phone model.

You should flash Nepal firmware then. It would give you better (more match) CSC code. The CSC (Consumer Software Customization) code contains the info about software packages specific to a particular region, carrier branding and also APN (Access Point Name) settings for data connection.
In my case, my S4 i9500 was made in Vietnam and when I received it, it had a Thailand firmware on it. It is a network unlocked phone. I live in USA. The first lollipop firmware came out was for Russia. So I flahsed the Russian firmware. My CSC showed that it is a russian phone. I used that phone on AT&T network that available in USA, China and Korea, and I had no problem.
Nothing will happen.
@sway8966
Are you really to suggest him to flash Nepali firmware on UK phone? I'll unlock it (the carrier-lock) first and then flash other countries' firmware if need.

Sorry to bump this up but im having problems with my s6 edge (Maybe because of this).
I recently acquired a phone from a relative from UK. The OS is android 7.0 and the carrier is three.co.uk (H3G), we have reset the phone to its factory settings and accidentally didnt noticed that it do auto update on the OS, then this bootloops starts to occur.
The phone isnt network-locked because the phone can receive signals, messages and phone calls on local sim.
Now upon browsing around SamMobile, There is an available Firmware for this mobile and even the firmware which is available to Philippines but only ver. 6.0.1
Is this possible to use the PH one or still i go to UK(h3g)?

Sorry for a noob question. I haven't been here since my days with an S3.
I pick up an supposedly unlocked G950U on ebay a week or so ago. When I got it It had G950USQU3CRE9 from 6/18 firmware installed. I put in my Mint Mobile SIM and it worked and had no carrier bloatware, but would fail when doing a manual update. Strangely in settings the Service provider SW ver. section was absent. I downloaded at installed via Odin G950USQU5CRL2. Magically the Service provider SW ver is now in settings.
Trying a manual update it downloaded and installed G950USQU5CSA4. SWEET. But I'm confused why I recieved that update.
Under Service provider SW ver it now lists;
SAOMC_SM-950U_OYN_XAS_OO_0075
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
XAS/XAA/VZW
Who am I getting the update for? Sammobile doesn't list SA4 for CSC's XAS (unknown) or XAA (unlocked) but does for VZW
The Phone ID app lists my product code as SM-G950UZVAXAA
Am i getting the update for verizon but a XAA unbloated one? or what? I would think XAS would be my active CSC.
Confused .... My last time playing with phones CSC didn't exist and I can't figure it out.
Also, I would love to flash the G950U1 firmware but there isn't a version a current as SA4, even the pie betas, and concerned about a brick.
Any help in understanding would be GREATLY appreciated.

Xaa is unlocked firmware. I think xas is sprint. But the third vzw means your sales code is verizon so you should be getting updates from them. You can use sammobile or updato get the latest and flash home csc with your sim in and it should go to your carrier. 5th digit from end is bootloader revision thats what you have to pay attn to. As long as you get revision 5 firmware ypur gold. We have locked bootloaders so you cant really brick with odin. You have to flash a rev 5 combination file then the u1 firmware which is the unlocked firms
So what i think is you got a sprint phone with unlocked firmware but with verizon as a sales code for end user if im not mistaken... If thats the case it is most def unlocked sim wise.
I have a couple of noob questions as well Since I'm new to CSC era...
Got s8 950U and was not able to update FW for several months now due to no functioning OTA and Odin failed as I lack the combination file knowledge. My phone appears to be for Hong Kong market with Snapdragon and I use it in Europe.
1) Is it possible to unlock OTA by switching CSC to local provider? Not sure if 950U is even supported in Europe CSCs? What if I pick XAA instead of local one?
2) Any idea how to update to Pie and unlock OTA/Samsung Pay/Secure folder etc.? What is the correct formula to understand which combination file to use before flashing latest Pie 950U1 XAA ROM G950U1UEU5DSC1?
Nobody able to help at least slightly?
i have the same problem with my s8 , thar has csc of hong kong tgy and won't me let download the last updates also i can't open samsung health secure folder s pay ect....any solution ??! ,, thanks in advance
I have the same issue. Phone name is SM-G950U but CSC is TGY (Hongkong). It can not be updated via OTA and I don't know what is its correct CSC.

Will this work for my Rooted Extreme Syndicate s8 g590U nougat? mine says BST/BST/VWZ. (not able to receive SMS texts) Possible to flash DTA6 home CSC without breaking root to update my carrier?
Hi guys,
Needed your help in understanding how software updates on my S10+, which I initially purchased from AT&T locked paid it off and got it unlocked, will work after I switched to Tmobile. I do get the tmobile splash screen now but under 'Software version' I do see that the service provider version has 'att' in it.
Here are my observations after unlocking and switching to Tmobile so far :
- I now get the tmobile startup splash screen and ringtones
- Default ATT apps gone and now replaced with Tmobile ones
- Previously hidden/disabled apps while on ATT are now accessible on Tmobile like Call & Message continuity, connect to windows
- When I press check for software updates it says 'Tmobile update service: connecting to server ' so it does seem its checking against tmobile server
But I'm still not sure if I will get future updates. Does anyone have a similar experience or information reg this situation pls? Worst case is there any way to flash my phone with tmobile firmware officially? I do not want to void warranty by rooting or side loading. Thanks
The service provider will always show AT&T even if you flash the U1 (carrier free) firmware or T-mobile firmware since the phone originally shipped as an AT&T branded device. That won't stop you from receiving updates.
It sounds like your firmware completely reprovisioned after you switched SIM cards so you should get OTA updates from T-mobile.
When I bought my S10+ the AT&T firmware didn't reprovision so unlocked users needed to flash non-AT&T firmware in order to receive OTA updates.
