I am facing issues with Google Allo, the notifications do not alert me to a new message either unless i have the app open or quite a while later. Tried the usual fixes but nothing resolve this, i dont think this is rom related as all others work and i have adjusted all settings including battery optimisation.
Any ideas would be appreciated
Do you use any apps like Greenify? that could be a problem if the app is being forced to sleep..
Or maybe take a look in Settings > Device Maintenance > Battery
there is a few settings in there that maybe putting it to sleep
scroll down to the bottom and add Allo to "unmonitored apps"

Usually restore from titanium backup, however in an attempt to fix it i did uninstall and reinstall from fresh and this also had the same effect of delays

Hangouts crashes trying to send SMS after 4.4.3 upgrade. 3rd Party apps do the same. As soon as you start typing hangouts crashes.
You disabled "Messaging" before the upgrade and can't re-enable it. "Enable" is grayed out in the Settings->Apps menu.
Solution
---------
In the Settings->apps menu - the 3 dots menu has a "Reset App Preferences" option. It re-enables ALL disabled apps. This will fix sending SMS/MMS. You can't have it disabled in 4.4.3 safely.

Happened right after 4.4.3 upgrade. I tried to clear hangouts data but to no avail.

Also it sounds just like this here: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/hangouts/4i6nKG-d2_M
But I don't have delivery reports and I can't enable messaging. It's disabled in settings->apps.

Sorry, can you move this to Q/A? My bad.
OK I found a fix. In the apps menu - the 3 dots menu has a "Reset App Preferences" option. It re-enables ALL disabled apps. Not ideal since I'll have to re-disable the others I don't want. But at least it gets messaging re-enabled.
That makes SMS work again oddly enough. Just need to deal with having a "messaging" app in the drawer that I don't use I guess.

Nice! Thanks for posting the fix, could come in handy for me once I switch to 4.4.3 as I have 68 services/apps frozen =P
I also had this issue. I factory reset, which is usually a decent idea after updates. It definitely had something to do with messaging being disabled and I couldn't reenable it either. Glad you found an alternate fix, loving the update so far

Yeah if I had been rooted and done titantium backup recently, that would have been my approach too. I didn't want to have to redo all my apps and settings etc. Glad I didn't have to.
I didn't use TiBu to restore. It's weird but this phone is the first that I don't really back things up like I used to. Mostly cause I have no risk of breaking stuff via flashing nightlies and the like. I've had iffy experiences restoring old data on to new builds so I started from scratch. So far so good.
Yeah I had this too. After the update, i could receive but not send SMS/MMS. Had the stock app previously disabled and then the enable button was gone. Drove me absolutely crazy last night and most of today. Tried half a dozen SMS apps and even downloaded two entire Roms to get their MMS.apk and try to install them (which did not work at all). Even deleted all my messages with an SMS backup app. Nada. Moto support (obviously bad idea) said to clear cache for entire phone, which totally could have worked but was completely unhelpful. I did dozens of Google searches about it and came up empty every time. I was just about to give in to a factory reset, which I consider the my last resort, and I checked the action overflow in the disabled apps section and found the "reset app preferences". Then just browsing XDA for battery tips a few minutes later, I came across then. I even checked the Dev section earlier. But I guess I should have checked general. Thanks for putting this out there for others to find.
Thanks for this solution. Made life better for me. I guess 4.4.3 doesn't allow us to disable the messaging app.
You are the man! I thought I was the only one having the problem. Thank you! :good:

hi,
firstly there are different kinds of wakelocks.
Also its just not that simple to disable any wakelock
You have to id which app / setting, is causing said wakelock.
then take the necessary action.
eg Google location, in settings, (if you enable it,) drains battery quite badly, and it creates certain wakelocks that wakes device as it is necessary, to id you location. Fix in this case is to turn off Google location.
i would if i was you install Better battery stats app or Wakelock detector app and take it from there to id the culprit
good luck

I have disabled a lot.. Example i have deleted S Voice, BlurbCheckout, Flipboard and i can't ever remember. And yeah, you can uninstall with Titanium Facebook, Fb messenger, whatsapp, instagram etc. and then install back from Play Store that then they are installed like "user apps" not as system apps.

If you are using without any lock method (no pincode, password or fingerprint) then it's fine. But if you are using any lock method you need to modify with app setting app called Keyguardtestactivity and change dpi to 640 and checkbox name "Apply res to widgets" and then reboot. Also if you are using Xposed framework please take a look this one because there is some weird problems when you are using Xposed Framework on Note but this one fix it.
well..if u still can't use whatsapp..try to delete the whatsapp from titanium backup and then search for whatsapp+ v6.15..not the new one..i think the new one is 6.26..that one is always crashing for me in my note 4..don't know why..seems a bug..but if using 6.15 it will work fine..just delete the whatsapp and then install v6.15 whatsapp+ and restore the data via titanium backup..

Hey guys!
I just moved from a rooted LG G4 running Lollipop to the S8 Exynos. It really seems to be a great phone but I'm having issues with WhatsApp.
Sometimes I feel like the messages aren't really coming up in time, I can open the app and see no new message, close the app, open it again and it will reconnect and show me new messages.
It is even more noticeable while using the WhatsApp desktop program on Windows 10. I see a lot of yellow messages saying I'm not connected to the phone OR when I send a messages I see the "clock" instead of the single-double check right away.
My WiFi setting is set to "Always".
I'm not using any battery save option from the phone.
I installed Greenify (not rooted) but WhatsApp is not in the list to hibernate
Any ideas of what is going on? I didn't have this problem on the G4.
have you added whatsapp into the 'unmonitored apps' section in battery settings?
Can you check BBS and see if WA is using crazy amount of sensor usage? Mine is. I had to turn off battery optimization for WA to work.

Sorry, what is BBS?
I've been playing and trying to figure out what is going on. I found out that my phone is running on "optimized" and not in High Performance, Game or Entertainment. Do you guys think this has something to do with it? It shouldn't be this way right? I also have WhatsApp set to ignore any battery save option, according to the app options.
Also, yesterday I turned off my router. I received a message just before turning it off and I saw the notification on the Windows program like I usually do but it took a couple of minutes for the phone to let me know I received a notification, even though the phone had no connection to the internet. lol what?

Thanks! I downloaded the app but I need to do the ADB thing and I left the USB cable at home lol (now I need to buy multiple ones and aren't cheap)
I also noticed that I do receive the visual notifications (like in the notification bar) but the sound and LED notification comes way later.
Anyone solve the sensor issues
I was finally able to solve this problem and decided to put how I did it in case anyone can benefit from it.
I did check that Whatsapp was listed as "Unmonitored apps" in the battery section of device manager, but still had the problem. After further internet research I noticed that people where pointing to the Android's Optimize battery section, which seems that is doing a very similar functionality but is accessed from a completely different place, so make sure Whatsapp is not being "optimized" from here either.
To find this section go to Settings-> Apps -> Click the 3 Dots menu in the top right -> Special access -> Optimize battery usage -> Select "All apps" from the dropdown menu. In here, make sure Whatsapp and any other app that you cannot risk to go to sleep unintended shows as disabled (not being optimized).
Hope this helps someone with this disconnections.
My Pushbullet and FB Messenger messages are severely delayed after I switched to the 8 Pro. I've made sure to disable RAM boost, also disabling any battery optimizations for said apps. Yet, most of the time, I don't receive any messages until I manually open the app in question. Not sure what else I should change or if this is a system issue. I never had these issues on my OP6 and used the same settings there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I've done that too. So strange that it didn't help. And seeing that it affects Pushbullet, Messengern and Whatsapp tells me it's not specifically app related.
I too have noticed issues with this, sometimes they come through exactly at the right time and other times I have to wake the screen before they then proceed to come through. It seems the battery optimisation settings are quite harsh on wake-locks out the box.
Remove each app from optimization. You should be able to find the app, and it's the settings app and then turn it off per app.

As I said in my original post, I've disabled the battery optimizations for the affected apps, but to no avail.
I may have found the cause and the solution to this, but it's still too early to tell. Most of my apps are restored using TiBu, coming from my previous OP6. I've uninstalled and reinstalled some of the problematic apps clean, not restoring app data with TiBu, but rather from the Play Store. I'm amazed that the app data is automatically restored upon app installation, given that the app itself allows it.
This seems to have done the trick, Pushbullet, Messenger and others seem to be giving me notifications instantly. I did have to disable battery optimization on those apps once more. I'll report back later.
Maybe a dalvik-cache and cache wipe would suffice, I have no idea.
The push notifications are extremely late if the phone remains quite unused, I have set the best but I cannot solve the problem. I need to take gmail emails in real time and this is a serious problem for me, have you found any solutions?
Hi all
I use my share location sometimes on way home from work, but it doesn't work, as soon as I open the app again it starts to work again?
Seems the app has to be open and running and on to be working.
Not an issue on previous phones, is there a way to allow it to remain running? Seems silly to need to have it on?
Try to not optimize the battery usage on WhatsApp. That may solve the issue. I have experienced delay in notifications with WhatsApp, so I removed that optimization. Normally this solves the 90% of the issues with location, notifications or background processes
