My partner is looking at getting a new phone, and we are looking around at different models. We want one that we will be able to upgrade and flash custom ROMs on for obvious reasons. For the AT&T model, what's the status of the bootloader? I have read that someone had an unlock method a few months ago, but I've also read that new models have an update that breaks that method. Also I have read that there is a safestrap method to install custom ROMs without having to unlock the bootloader.
Can someone summarize the status of the above for me? We would be buying a new one from AT&T. Would we be able to unlock the bootloader, or use safestrap?
Thanks!

The best place to find the information you want is in the threads you said you read. There is nothing else to tell more than what is already in those threads.

Most of them haven't been updated in a month or more, or are dozens of pages deep. If you aren't going to be helpful then just don't comment. I frequent boards for other phones and try to help people with questions instead of condescendingly telling them to go trek through the labyrinth that is the world of Android development.

OK, continue being rude and lazy. I'll leave you to it.
Here's some help, your partner is probably going to get mk2 firmware. It's bootloader locked and probably always will be. You can use the right version of safe strap and flash a few roms.
Anyone:
Is TWRP being developed for the Samsung S7 Edge?

We need more than root to use TWRP. The bootloader has to be unlocked. It's not very likely that you'll see any Samsung US versions unlocked, they've been locked down pretty damn tight for years.
I'm looking pretty hard at the Pixel XL.. I miss flashing roms every other night lol.

Oh but it most certainly does.
IF the OP managed to crack the bootloader THEN we can progress on the TESTING phase of a TWRP recovery. If he didn't unlock (or crack) the bootloader then thus it is locked, right? Which only answers the question.
One could easy argue that he didn't realize that the bootloader was locked. Okay. So let's do that. We'll assume as such. So let's wonder together now. Why would a device considered the best (and most popular) Android phone on the market not have a custom recovery? Hmm. That doesn't make sense! So instead of posting the inquiry in the appropriate How To Root section... another thread is opened about it. Undoubtedly, if the OP had read about it (s)he would have found that the bootloader is locked. Right? Because what other explaination could there be for the most popular Android phone on the market?
It really just means that every question has an answer but not every answer can *only* be found by starting yet another thread.
But... maybe... just maybe... he DOES have an unlocked bootloader. Wouldn't that be neat? Wouldn't we like to know how? The absence of such is the very reason we don't have TWRP available. Again... a little reading would lead one to discover that very minor detail. Of which the OP clearly didn't do enough. So... the moral of my point is...

A simple search would have answered his question before he posted his/her question.. yes we all started out asking questions and we all have been told the same thing. Search first before asking questions. Its as simple as that. That is what google is for and the search options in these forums..

I don't get how else should do it. It prevents a load of other threads being created. If we tend to be soft on people who don't use a function that was created for a reason, we would be having threads over threads of asking for something that has been answered NUMEROUS times.

How was I being harsh by inquiring to procedure in which he had used to unlock his bootloader?
Once we are all able to unlock ours then we can develop a fully functional recovery.
I know how you say it.... hey noob topic starter man (just kidding ) that question has been asked a few times already, do a search if you need more information. The same questions over and over tend to clog these threads up. But what clogs them even more, is the multiple flaming responses with no answers or guidance. . Or better yet, you can say... I have a link it's right here vvv.Heresyour answer.com/post710
Well this is TWRP built for Snapdragon S7s but won't boot because of locked bootloader.
First i wanna say that it's my first huawei phone and i never flashed one but looking around in this forum i notice that it's really different that other manufacturers phones.
I'm now with l21 on b161 and saw resurrection remix... I wanna flash it but can someone help with twrp (with version) and all that stuff because i saw in comments that lot of people have issues flashing it and my phone is fresh i get it in last week because of that i don't have root or anything else... If someone helps really thanks
And other thing i heard that official android 7 will be for this phone when it will be out can i get it with that 3 button method(if i will be on resurrection remix) or what i will need to do..(idk everyone talks about that method in this forum and it sounds really easy) if someone reads all of this and actually helps then i wanna say you thanks before thats why ..Thanks

Just ignore him, he had troubles flashing firmware and now he tells everyone to stay on stock. We are on XDA lol
First of all, you have to unlock bootloader witch tutorial can be found on Guides subforum. It isn't difficult and you do not risk to brick your phone.
After you managed to unlock the bootloader, you have to install TWRP, you can find download and How to install it here:http://www.meticulus.co.vu/p/twrp-for-huawei-p9-lite.html?m=1
Then download RR and the latest Gapps Arm64 6.0 and follow the instructions from here:
http://www.meticulus.co.vu/p/hi6250-custom-rom-installation.html?m=1
Do everything is written, the procedure to flash RR is the same as CM.
Huawei devices are a little complicated with encryption stuffs so be sure to read carefully every single step of the tutorial. If you follow all the instructions you will not have any problem, good luck!

Telling on XDA to not flash a ROM is like to go in a church and tell "do not believe in God". (It is just an example, don't take it personally. I respect everyone's religion).
If someone ask how to flash a ROM/Mod it means that he is aware of the eventual risks. If you just want to say everytime "it's better to flash only official firmware/wait for OTA update", yeah you are surely right. But you must understand that lots of people want to flash custom ROMs and Mods and accepts the risk of having problems. These people are 99℅ of XDA community.
If you keep go around the forum to just tell people to not flash anything it's normal that we become a little rude. I hope you understand, have a good day.

Actually it's not that simple...
You don't get to come here and ask for all of the work to be done for you. Otherwise it happens like with the Galaxy Grand 2, where the phone had a very good dev community but noobs with no interest on spending some time just ruined it to the point that literally only a couple of devs stayed and released CM14.
Also if you ask for someone to send you the exact guides that you need, you'll probably not read anything, and you'll get a beautiful DFU brick...
Do this: First do your homework. Memorize the model on the back of your phone, see if the software model matches the one on the back. As a tip, there are 3 models, the A2017, the A2017G and the A2017U. If you use a file that's not for your model you can start saying goodbye to your brick, or else you'll probably be days trying to fix it (or months like some people). Look at the problems that may come up when rooting and see the way to avoid those. Then look for a guide that suits your model. Download all the files, ensure that all of them work (you'll need Windows on a 64-bit PC), and THEN proceed.
If you have any doubts you can PM me or maybe the maker of the guide, but at least try to do something for yourself! I read more than 10 pages on the guide that I used just to see the problems that may arise and stuff like that. You also should be able to do that. And if you aren't, it's best that you don't try. This is not a Nexus device for you to write 'fastboot oem unlock' and basically finish unlocking the bootloader, this is MUCH more serious...
Use my toolkit: https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/tool-axon7toolkit-t3573108
No need for any guides
Just make sure you read all the main posts as there a couple snags
Hi,
Since Huawei closed giving away bootloader codes,
and I've blowed 60 USD on dc unlocker,
is there a way to get the bootloader code hash to decrypt it with hashcat, for example?

Yes but don't know how to get the bootloader code
Downgrade as low as possible and give it a try.
haexhub/huaweiBootloaderHack: Huawei-unlock-bootloader (github.com)
Edit:
First Download This -> SkyEmie/huawei-honor-unlock-bootloader: A simple tool for managing Huawei/Honor devices to unlock bootloader (github.com)
then grab unlock.py from haexhub and replace it. Then its a 'All-in-One Package' - no need to install anything.

THANKS A LOT M8!!!!!!!!!!!
I've started the program but i am just curious how many different codes/how many attempts can there be in total?
Thats a good question, im sure u can find the answer in one of the 2 repos. One is endless (pure bruteforce) vs IMEI + HASH.
I'm still too lazy to Downgrade my Phone to give it a try (with out rebooting every 4 attempts), because no clue if its worth all the effort, as Huawei modding / hacking seems like almost dead.

Ok thanks I've started the brute force the day same as u shared the github links and it's still on attempt around 97k so I'am still trying...
But do u know if it's possible to copy the WHOLE boot partition without unlocking bootloader?
Oh wow! Didnt expect that it might take this long.
And no, sorry. But i doubt that its possible, otherwise some sneaky hackers would found that gloryhole already.

I have just successfully unlocked the bootloader lock by the Taobao service CNY30. It is done by PC remote control. My P10 phone (VTR-AL00) was firstly downgraded from my EMUI 9.1 to EMUI 5. Then the operation was very fast (ROM firmware loading time was long) & I can't see clearly. At last it was successfully unlocked & the guy gave me the unlock code also. If you guys want to do this, you need to ask a friend who know Chinese writing to chat on the net. Then I upgraded the phone using Huawei official upgrade from the phone to EMUI 9.0. Then I flashed the openkirin ROMs successfully. I've tried all four ROMs (RR, OMNI, AOSP, AEX). All of them have some bugs. One important one is the phone can't be charged when powered off. It will go to bootloader mode when plugged with the charging cable. You need to charge when the phone is on.
Install testpoint drivers ( https://files.dc-unlocker.com/share.html?v=share/18B15B9D02C945A79B1967234CECB423 - these worked for my p10 lite), enter download mode via testpoints then use PotatoNV - https://github.com/mashed-potatoes/PotatoNV , i just did this two days ago then installed twrp and rooted with magisk, fairly simple and insanely useful, only drawback is you need to open up your phone back cover to do it. Works without downgrading on Emui 8
THANKS GUYS FOR ALL YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT <3
I've succesfully opened my phone with dc unlocker
You may want to try the testpoint method. Worked like charm for me. Check potatonv git and YouTube..
Once we find the code, bootlocker unlocking factory reset it?
