so, just networked my office pc and my living room media pc, just using ssh tunneling. all media stored on office pc, accessed via living room pc to go to tv.
both systems on ubuntu. office on 9.10, living room on 10.04
i highly recommend using remote droid (an app) for anyone else doing the same. lets me control the mouse on either computer from my couch, and the onscreen keyboard works just fine. from my couch, i drag and drop whatever files i want from one computer to the other, load any media i want, etc.
it's brilliant. i couldn't be happier
all you need if you have the setup is the remote droid jar file running. you can get it on the remote droid website. all totally free.

it isn't like phonemypc. phonemypc is an emulator like a remote desktop kind of deal, like logmein. this is just a remote mousepad/keyboard. you still have to look at the screen to see what you're doing. very handy though if you're on the couch. and, you don't have to do it in what i refer to as 'squintovision'.

ah. you don't need to set ports for droid remote either. just tell it the local i.p. address of the computer you want to control. very handy for me, since i use it on more than one computer. and gmote is nice, if all you want to do is goof with your libraries. i can do whatever with remote droid. move files, start up hulu, navigate the web, etc. anything you could do sitting at the computer, you can do with remote droid (as long as you can still see the screen, lol)
I can't figure out how to set this up in Ubuntu.

go to the remote droid website to get the jar file. you'll need the java runtime already installed on your computer (can get through software repository). once you have the jar file, just right click > open with > java runtime. then start up the remote droid app on your phone.
the default address was wrong for mine (127.0.1.1). you can find out your device address by going into your router (usually address 192.168.0.1, unless you've changed it) using a browser. your pc will be listed somewhere. google how to find it specifically within your router. then, plug that address into the remote droid configuration. should work like a charm
Is there a way in Ubuntu to setup a fixed IP address?
Setup Synergy (server) on your PC.
Sideload Synergy Android Client on your Fire TV.
The client can be setup from the Fire TV remote. Press "Right" from the empty textarea at the bottom to select "Connect".
The client will continue to run, even with the Fire TV is asleep. Just use escape to wake it, though you will have to reconnect after a restart.
I haven't found the right key combinations for Home or Menu, but ESC works for Back. I'll update this post if I stumble across them or someone posts them below.
For help setting up the server on your PC, see the Synergy User Guide.
Tip: I personally prefer to use hotkeys to switch between screens, rather than moving the mouse off screen. If you choose to use move your mouse from screen to screen, I highly recommend setting up a hotkey to bring your focus back to the main screen, for when you lose track of your mouse.
Note: An older version of Synergy is still available to download for free on SourceForge, though I haven't tested it with the android client.
I also ran across ShareKM (Share Keyboard & Mouse) in the related threads when posting this, but I haven't tested it, either.
Using a keyboard and mouse does not require root.

Relax guys, he is just pointing out options. This would be useful say for someone that does not have a stand alone mouse or keyboard but has a laptop they can use to make the random selection here and there.

I haven't been able to get it to work for me. It just tells me I wasn't able to "Failed to connect to Wolvey:24800" on the firestick side. I changed the computer name to Wolvey since the previous one was the LAPTOP-;kjasdf and I was too lazy to sit there and try typing that over and over again. I restarted my computer after changing the name as well. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Also, I was wondering if DeskDock was tried out as well since it seems to be considered to be a more stable alternative?
Thanks

Has anyone been able to install a torrent app on a unrooted shield? If so which one because I have not had any luck sideloading any.
I used fluid to get a linux iso to recover my laptop so I could root. That should work fine.
utorrent works just fine!
A downloader. I just use the green "lite" version. http://android-a.com/

Yes, try uTorrent.
uTorrent works, but I gotta do what I can not print to an external hard disk.

I use Ttorrent Pro and it works a charm. If you create a directory /Android/data/hu.tagsoft.ttorrent.lite or /Android/data/hu.tagsoft.ttorrent.pro on the usb hard drive (depending on your app version) you can select this directory as the save path in the app. I think the lite version also works.
hi guys
how to fix 'file too large ( write to disk)' error message in utorrent download?
im running on lolipop rom for my galaxy note.
tTorrent works fine and has remote control support (web and Transdroid).

Anyone try sideloading this on a Sony XBR55X850D tv?
I use Zetatorrent pro on a Nexus Player with an old USB 2.0 hard drive I had lying around(HDDs still hold up best to frequent writing) as adopted storage. I keep the Nexus Player in commission just for that and let the shield go to sleep when I am not using it. Besides that I only use it for storage eating Android games that don't require a lot of processing power. You might need a mouse to deal with some of the settings but any standard USB mouse will do. I use a wireless USB mouse for gaming on my Shield(despite NVidia's best efforts to make PC games controller friendly, some still just work better with a keyboard and mouse). A Bluetooth mouse will probably work too. Otherwise, I was able to control the client with the Nexus remote which is more simplistic than the Shield remote, but I seldom even did that. Just install transdrone on your phone and enable the web interface in zetatorrent. You can now browse and add torrents right from your phone and manage everything in an interface that's very friendly. Want even more? Zetatorrent can automatically copy the files to your NAS after the torrent is completed. I absolutely love that feature for this application
Hi guys,
I am facing a lot of difficulty in trying to mount a samba share on the shield TV (16gb model).
It's freshly rooted with busybox, supersu, se linux mode and patched cifs manager.
No matter how I try to mount it, via terminal or via the patched CIFSManager, I always get an error saying "cannot access a needed shared library".
su --mount-master -c busybox mount -o username=shaf,password=android,rw,noperm,iocharset=utf8 -t cifs //192.168.1.1/android /data/media/0/android
The network folder is perfectly accessible through ES File explorer & I've even tried formatting the network drive as ext4.
I have checked in proc/ and the cifs files are there but I'm not sure if I need to load a cifs.ko kernel module, I assumed it was loaded.
I would be very grateful if someone could help me out here and point me in the right direction.

hey guys. im not much on networking. trying to figure it all out myself, but i found this app awhile back called servers ultimate pro.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.serversultimatepro
they do have a 7 day trial to test things out but through this app i was able to create a smb/cifs server with windows 10 being able to map it as a network drive. At least on windows 10, i had to google and eventually found a few registry tweaks to make windows actually see it.
Currently my issue now is speed transfer isnt all that fast. its usable for my needs, but i average about 5-10MBps during transfer with an external usb 3.0 HDD plugged into the shield tv, transferring files over the network between my windows 10 machine. That is an issue im currently working on fixing, but i was at least able to create a working server with this app. The authors have a forum on xda as well but its looking more and more that it might become abandoned (servers ultimate pro) as the author(s) havent been responding to forum questions or even emails.
either way, just thought id let you guys know.

Ive actually tried that one amongst others, was one of the best tested at the time, even had, if i recall correctly, tasker support which is a must, but my shield for all intense and purposes, will be free of the google eco system, hence why i wont/cant have apps that require license check.......i dont like the artificial dependancy on other apps/services such as google services
On the lookout, hopefully, for an open source alternative with good tasker support.

Hey thanks buddy,
I think I had a look at that before but ignored it temporarily as I wanted to fix mounting samba shares first thereafter focus on making a script so it mounts automatically on boot but I don't see a problem with skipping straight to using the script.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to check/test the firetv script until next weekend, what problem do you have when trying to use the script?
I'm tempted to install the full android version with a tv style home launcher and check if I can connect to samba shares as this is driving me nuts lol.
Check out the thread 'nVidia Shield Android TV - Post your home screen' and see andrewthecoder's post, need to ask him if he's able to mount remote samba shares.
BTW guys, I think there's some confusion, my intention is to use the shield tv as a client, not to host a samba server lol.

Honestly, i didnt really put much effort into it, just quickly tried to see if it worked first, second, third try before giving up, waiting on more info on the xda thread, or maybe even an app to do this more simply, or an alternative working method.........im playing the, keep my ears to the ground, waiting game
Plus, ive not found any confirmation on which android samba servers are confirmed working for this kind of mount, so i have the worry, that the script may work, but fail on a non standard samba server.........again, waiting on confirmation on what works and hopefully a guide.........looking it up every now and again

Haha no worries man, yes I'll try messing with that coming this Friday evening, did you use script manager, SManager?
Ah damn I did not even know there's different types of samba servers! ?

For mine I found that the utf8 bit was throwing it off. I removed that and added sec=ntlm and that worked for me. The only downside is apps can read from it but can't seem to write to it. Give it a go and see if that helps though.

Thanks for that luvley bit of insight, and the thread maker for starting the subject in the first place........hopefully, a write solution will show up and find its way to this "network storage mounting" thread..........
Theres another potential, i stress, potential avenue to mount local filesystems beyond jellybean...sshfs
Easysshfs
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.nsu.bobrofon.easysshfs&hl=en
https://bitbucket.org/bobrofon/easysshfs
Ive attempted to test this, sshelper server on the shield, easysshfs on the tablet with no success.......im thinking theres kernel modules involved( fuse.ko) , mind you im no expert. (Easysshfs logs makes mention of "fuse.sshfs is not in proc/mounts")
If modules are indeed involved then this is not an ideal solution (unless kernel moduling becomes universally compatible somehow), as i'd prefer any future purchases of stock android to have the ability natively, minimum, instead of waiting and hoping someone can release a solution
Sshelper
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arachnoid.sshelper&hl=en
http://arachnoid.com/android/SSHelper/
Edit
Well holy moly, i got it working, i just randomly decided to put admin as username instead of leaving it blank and hey presto....mounted.........quickly tested a file manager without network support, opensource "amaze", to browse and play a video on my tab from a usb stick on my shield........excellent
So for those interested, a simple two app install plus configuring (username, pass, mount to, mount from) and you have network mounting.....on lollipop.........excellent

Yes I am sharing a "server of sorts" (Desktop in den with video and audio files stored) with multiple setups .
Shield with Kodi
Laptop with Kodi
Laptop with VLC
Samsung Tablets with Kodi or VLC
Sharing permissions need to be set to allow "Everyone" read/write access on server
I use a "MOVIE" folder, a "TV SHOW" folder, and a "MUSIC" folder then add source under files in KODI,select scraper for tv,movie,or music and it will also add covers and details to list. Kodi will detect files and add a MOVIE ,TV SHOWS, and MUSIC tab on home screen after scanning. I also set "scan on startup" " in systems settings so I only need to reboot to update libraries.
https://kodi.tv/ use wiki if you get lost
Hope this helps

It appears you are sharing your media from a server to the Shield. I am trying to use my Shield with Kodi as the server. I have an external drive attached by USB to the Shield and need to connect two other computers to it. I did this previously with OpenELEC and Xbian, but I can't get them to recognize the Shield/Kodi on the network like I'm used to. Any assistance would be great. Thanks!
I should probably mention that I am not rooted and would like to not root my Shield so I can get further updates rolled out by NVidia. That's kind of the problem.
I'm trying to run a Samba server on the NVidia Shield without root that has read/write access to external storage (external hard drive).
So far, I've been able to get FTP servers running on it, but nothing allows access to my external storage. I'd much prefer SMB to FTP though.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
AFAIK it is not possible to run a Samba server on Android without root since SMB uses port numbers < 1024.
Rather than attach my external drive directly to the NVidia Shield, I attached it to the router and have all my computers (Linux and Windows boxes) and the Shield connect to the shared drive and all folders. That works great!

The one I have has a 32gb micro sd card and 2 usb 3.0 4tb external hdd's connected, I use it mainly for running kodi, and for streaming the external hdd's content to other devices at home that also have kodi installed. For my type of usage, by priority, this are the things I would like to see fixed / implemented:
- We already have suspend and reboot, but I would really like if there was a simple turn on and off / remote power off option without having to phisicaly touch the console, I don't like that the external hdd's are always working;
- Better system / app compatibility with external drives, currently I can't even make a simple kodi library backup;
- Option to auto-start a certain app after boot, by exiting that app it would go back to launcher;
- Better mouse support, those who use es explorer know how hard it is to do even the most simple actions without using a mouse;
- More theme / launcher custom options, possibility to choose only what I want and the size I want it to show on the "desktop", change wallpapers;
- More app compatibility from play store, there is a very limited number of apps currently available that are compatible with shield whitout having to use sideload launcher.
I don't know if there's already a solution for any of the things I mentioned, especially the first two, if so, please let me know, thanks!

controller/remote can already wake up the Shield.
AFAIK, the USB mass storage protocol doesn't have disk-specific instructions for spinning up and down drives. So it's up to each drive and/or enclosure (case+usb<->sata controller) to provide this functionality.

best way if you want a specific app to appear in the TV store is to contact the author of that app.
anyway this is a design/philosophy problem.
go for alternate ROM if you don't like the design/philosophy of Android TV.

True, but the current standby / sleep mode is a little like locking the screen of your phone (or even less because everything is still working, just the "screen" is turned off), I wanted the option to acctualy shut down shield with the remote, currently it can only be powered off by holding the power button on the console for about 10 seconds, after that you can't turn it on again from distance with any remote / controller.
The two external hdd's I'm using on shield are self powered 3.0 usb 4tb Verbatim Store `n` Save, when connected to any other device (wd tv, laptop, etc....) after a few minutes of not being in use, they will enter standy mode / shutdown, even if the device where they're connected to is still on, if you need to access any of it's contents (just open the hdd root folder for instance) they will power on automatically, this doesn't happen on shield and I don't think that this is any of the hdd's fault, I also don't know if it's in any way harmful for the hard drives to be on all the time...?

The reason why I want to backup kodi's library is exactly because, in order to root, I need to unlock the bootloader and, in doing so I'll loose all data...

I use a logitech k700 mouse + keyboard combo, but the mouse stops working after some time (I believe this is a known issue on shield), I don't know if this is due to leanback launcher, it does this with every mouse I tried so far...

Which launcher works best on android tv without being "sidelaunched"...? I ask this because the one I tried didn't open on shield startup, I had to open if afterwards on sidelaucher. I've also read that the opposite can also hapen, that certain launchers (xbmc launcher for instance) won't let you go back to leanback or access shield settings...

I have nothing against the design/philosophy of Android TV, I just think that if a certain app or game (Sine Mora [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.digitalreality.sinemora] works flawlessly using the controller) is fully compatible with shield, it should be accessible without the use of sidelauncher.
Thanks for the help

im having the same hdd wake issue, only difference is mine seems fine until the satv sleeps. the hdd doesnt wake when satv does... so far my search for a fix hasnt gone well, hoping the M update will take care of it.
might give HAL launcher a try if you dont want to sideload, if you havent already. iirc it had an option in settings to be used as default launcher. i tried it about 6 months ago and went back to leanback.
there dont seem to be many good alternatives atm
and AutoStarter should work for autolaunching apps, also has a start to foreground and delayed start options, havent tried it on the satv though

you can backup your library to the cloud or a network server with ES File Explorer.
or with a PC (win/mac/linux) and adb (you dont need an usb cable, just activate debugging & network debugging in the Shield then "adb pull" the files you want to backup).

AFAIK, Sine Mora is accessible from the web play store , you don't need to sideload it but you need another device to access the web play store to push it to the Shield (or sideload a browser in the shield 1st since you have a mouse).
If Sine Mora doesn't show in the Shield Play Store it's because its editor didn't opt-in to do so. Try contacting them to fix that, some developers are just unaware of Android TV until someone ask them about it. The fix can take less than 5 minutes usually. The opt-in can't be automatic for a lot of reasons but mostly support (even more if it's a paid app).
