Mounting Samba/CIFS shares on Shield TV - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I am facing a lot of difficulty in trying to mount a samba share on the shield TV (16gb model).
It's freshly rooted with busybox, supersu, se linux mode and patched cifs manager.
No matter how I try to mount it, via terminal or via the patched CIFSManager, I always get an error saying "cannot access a needed shared library".
su --mount-master -c busybox mount -o username=shaf,password=android,rw,noperm,iocharset=utf8 -t cifs //192.168.1.1/android /data/media/0/android
The network folder is perfectly accessible through ES File explorer & I've even tried formatting the network drive as ext4.
I have checked in proc/ and the cifs files are there but I'm not sure if I need to load a cifs.ko kernel module, I assumed it was loaded.
I would be very grateful if someone could help me out here and point me in the right direction.

hey guys. im not much on networking. trying to figure it all out myself, but i found this app awhile back called servers ultimate pro.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.serversultimatepro
they do have a 7 day trial to test things out but through this app i was able to create a smb/cifs server with windows 10 being able to map it as a network drive. At least on windows 10, i had to google and eventually found a few registry tweaks to make windows actually see it.
Currently my issue now is speed transfer isnt all that fast. its usable for my needs, but i average about 5-10MBps during transfer with an external usb 3.0 HDD plugged into the shield tv, transferring files over the network between my windows 10 machine. That is an issue im currently working on fixing, but i was at least able to create a working server with this app. The authors have a forum on xda as well but its looking more and more that it might become abandoned (servers ultimate pro) as the author(s) havent been responding to forum questions or even emails.
either way, just thought id let you guys know.

Ive actually tried that one amongst others, was one of the best tested at the time, even had, if i recall correctly, tasker support which is a must, but my shield for all intense and purposes, will be free of the google eco system, hence why i wont/cant have apps that require license check.......i dont like the artificial dependancy on other apps/services such as google services
On the lookout, hopefully, for an open source alternative with good tasker support.

Hey thanks buddy,
I think I had a look at that before but ignored it temporarily as I wanted to fix mounting samba shares first thereafter focus on making a script so it mounts automatically on boot but I don't see a problem with skipping straight to using the script.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to check/test the firetv script until next weekend, what problem do you have when trying to use the script?
I'm tempted to install the full android version with a tv style home launcher and check if I can connect to samba shares as this is driving me nuts lol.
Check out the thread 'nVidia Shield Android TV - Post your home screen' and see andrewthecoder's post, need to ask him if he's able to mount remote samba shares.
BTW guys, I think there's some confusion, my intention is to use the shield tv as a client, not to host a samba server lol.

Yeah sorry, i did actually realise you were talking client side, i went slightly offtopic with server side talk
Honestly, i didnt really put much effort into it, just quickly tried to see if it worked first, second, third try before giving up, waiting on more info on the xda thread, or maybe even an app to do this more simply, or an alternative working method.........im playing the, keep my ears to the ground, waiting game
Plus, ive not found any confirmation on which android samba servers are confirmed working for this kind of mount, so i have the worry, that the script may work, but fail on a non standard samba server.........again, waiting on confirmation on what works and hopefully a guide.........looking it up every now and again

Haha no worries man, yes I'll try messing with that coming this Friday evening, did you use script manager, SManager?
Ah damn I did not even know there's different types of samba servers! ?
Lool I'm the complete opposite, too impatient to wait, that's why I'm really considering installing the full android version. It would be such a delight to have the dreamcast and gamecube roms running of the NAS drive as well as 4K files in the future.

For mine I found that the utf8 bit was throwing it off. I removed that and added sec=ntlm and that worked for me. The only downside is apps can read from it but can't seem to write to it. Give it a go and see if that helps though.

Ahhhhh, now were getting somewhere
Thanks for that luvley bit of insight, and the thread maker for starting the subject in the first place........hopefully, a write solution will show up and find its way to this "network storage mounting" thread..........

Theres another potential, i stress, potential avenue to mount local filesystems beyond jellybean...sshfs
Easysshfs
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.nsu.bobrofon.easysshfs&hl=en
https://bitbucket.org/bobrofon/easysshfs
Ive attempted to test this, sshelper server on the shield, easysshfs on the tablet with no success.......im thinking theres kernel modules involved( fuse.ko) , mind you im no expert. (Easysshfs logs makes mention of "fuse.sshfs is not in proc/mounts")
If modules are indeed involved then this is not an ideal solution (unless kernel moduling becomes universally compatible somehow), as i'd prefer any future purchases of stock android to have the ability natively, minimum, instead of waiting and hoping someone can release a solution
Sshelper
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arachnoid.sshelper&hl=en
http://arachnoid.com/android/SSHelper/
Edit
Well holy moly, i got it working, i just randomly decided to put admin as username instead of leaving it blank and hey presto....mounted.........quickly tested a file manager without network support, opensource "amaze", to browse and play a video on my tab from a usb stick on my shield........excellent
So for those interested, a simple two app install plus configuring (username, pass, mount to, mount from) and you have network mounting.....on lollipop.........excellent

Have you gotten this to work? I had it working on a previous OpenELEC box and an Xbian box, but I can't get it working on KODI on the Shield.

Yes I am sharing a "server of sorts" (Desktop in den with video and audio files stored) with multiple setups .
Shield with Kodi
Laptop with Kodi
Laptop with VLC
Samsung Tablets with Kodi or VLC
Sharing permissions need to be set to allow "Everyone" read/write access on server
I use a "MOVIE" folder, a "TV SHOW" folder, and a "MUSIC" folder then add source under files in KODI,select scraper for tv,movie,or music and it will also add covers and details to list. Kodi will detect files and add a MOVIE ,TV SHOWS, and MUSIC tab on home screen after scanning. I also set "scan on startup" " in systems settings so I only need to reboot to update libraries.
https://kodi.tv/ use wiki if you get lost
Hope this helps

It appears you are sharing your media from a server to the Shield. I am trying to use my Shield with Kodi as the server. I have an external drive attached by USB to the Shield and need to connect two other computers to it. I did this previously with OpenELEC and Xbian, but I can't get them to recognize the Shield/Kodi on the network like I'm used to. Any assistance would be great. Thanks!

I should probably mention that I am not rooted and would like to not root my Shield so I can get further updates rolled out by NVidia. That's kind of the problem.
I'm trying to run a Samba server on the NVidia Shield without root that has read/write access to external storage (external hard drive).
So far, I've been able to get FTP servers running on it, but nothing allows access to my external storage. I'd much prefer SMB to FTP though.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

AFAIK it is not possible to run a Samba server on Android without root since SMB uses port numbers < 1024.

Rather than attach my external drive directly to the NVidia Shield, I attached it to the router and have all my computers (Linux and Windows boxes) and the Shield connect to the shared drive and all folders. That works great!

Watching Video on your Xoom

Most of the information in this post is covered in various threads but I was recently looking for various options for playing video on my XOOM and found it frustrating having to look all over the place. I'd like to try and make this a comprehensive guide to playing video on the XOOM, including streaming over wifi, playing directly from the device etc.
Before you read on...
This isn't always a necessary step, but whenever you plan to interact with your device via USB you should ensure you have the latest version of the USB drivers from Motorola. In my case I was able to access the XOOM and move files to it without any specific drivers, but it's a good idea to keep them up-to-date to avoid potential frustration. Of course if you need to use ADB, you will absolutely need the latest drivers or you'll have no luck at all.
Playing directly from the XOOM
This is obviously the simplest solution, copying the video files onto your XOOM and playing them directly. This won't be the most appropriate solution for those of you with extensive digital media libraries, but we'll cover solutions for that later.
Plug your XOOM into your PC using a micro-USB to USB cable, one of which is typically provided in the box. You'll see your device pop up under "Computer" (Windows 7 & Vista) or "My Computer" (Windows XP).
Double click the device and you'll see that you're able to directly access the device's internal storage.
Double click that and you'll now be looking at all the folders and files on your device
You can now copy files to the device as though it was any other folder on your computer. Feel free to create a folder (I use one called "Files from Computer") if you'd like to keep your copied files separate from the system created stuff.
Choose your player! With all the files copied over to the XOOM, you're ready to play them but you'll first need a decent player capable of playing a range of formats. A couple of my favourites are:
vPlayer
Rockplayer
If there are others that should be added to this list, let me know.
You're all done - either of the above players should be able to play most video files, though I can't say I've really pushed them as most of my files are just XviD avi's. In my experience I've found vPlayer to be slightly better than Rockplayer especially when it comes to seeking, but Rockplayer's free version is an ad-supported full version and vPlayer's is just a temporary trial so it comes down to preference and willingness to pay for a little extra functionality.
Streaming over Wi-fi
This is going to be the preferred solution for many people, since it doesn't involve any copying/moving of files and will allow you to access that media library that you've spent so much time meticulously organising. There's a few different approaches here, I'll cover the simplest approach first.
Streaming from TVersity
If you already have TVersity set up, then you won't need to do much at all and you can skip straight to step 3. Otherwise, you can follow these directions to get it up and running.
Head to TVersity.com and grab the latest version of TVersity. I won't go through the setup and so forth as it's all pretty straightforward and is covered well in TVersity's own documentation.
Once you have TVersity set up, add your video directories to the library and (optional, but preferable) give your computer a static IP address on the network.
Open up your browser on the XOOM and navigate to "YOUR-IP-ADDRESS:41952".
You should see a TVersity page load up with various navigation options. From here it's pretty obvious how to drill down through your folders and locate any file you'd like to play. When you click a file to play it, you will be able to choose which media player you'd like to handle the file in. I've found vPlayer is capable of seeking and will play it quite nicely, but Rockplayer works well also, just without the ability to seek.
Mounting a Network Share
This is more complicated for the novice user (me, for example) but it works well enough and the end result is a little more user friendly once you get there. The major drawback with this one is you must root your device for this method. If you don't want to root your device, you'll need to use one of the other methods discussed in this post. This method allows you to mount a folder that you've shared over the network so that it can be accessed on the tablet as though it's actually a part of the tablet's file structure. This means that almost all video players should simply play the files without too much trouble (at least, theoretically; I can confirm vPlayer and Rockplayer as working with this method).
There are two apps capable of mounting shares, but before we get into that we'll need to ensure you have a CIFS module installed. If you're like me, you're probably wondering wtf a CIFS module is. When you root your device (I used the "one click" process described in this thread) you'll need to find a "cifs.ko" file that matches the particular kernal you've installed. If you use the aforementioned method, you'll find a cifs.ko file you can use inside the zip file (inside the "timat" folder).
Once you have the module use Root Explorer to copy it (or use adb to push it) to this location: /system/lib/modules/cifs.ko and then reboot your XOOM. If you have adb installed on your computer, you can use these steps to verify that it's loaded:
Code:
adb shell
lsmod
You'll be wanting to see the CIFS module in the list as a loaded module. If it's not loaded try typing:
Code:
insmod /system/lib/modules/cifs.ko
If you get an error like I did saying "exec format error" it means you've got the wrong cifs.ko for your kernal, so you'll need to poke around some more and locate the right one.
Congratulations, if you've made it this far you've completed the hardest part - the rest is easy.
Make sure you have an actual folder shared to "Everyone" on your network. Optionally, but preferably, give your computer a static IP address. If you don't do this you'll need to change your settings every time your computer gets a new IP.
Install "Mount Manager" or "CIFS Manager" from the android market. I'll give instructions for CIFS Manager but Mount Manager is just as good and works just fine if you'd rather use that.
Open CIFS Manager. You'll need to do this from the "My Apps" section of the market because for some reason it won't start from a shortcut or from the apptray - annoying!
Open the app-menu and select "Add New Share..."
Your share path should be: "IP-ADDRESS/FOLDER-NAME"
Your mount point will be the location you'd like to mount the share to on your internal memory. By default it likes to mount in "/mnt/cifs/FOLDER-NAME", but this is really up to you. Pick whatever you like here and then go to the next field.
Username/password will be a valid account you can use on the computer hosting the share. I just used my regular Windows 7 account here.
Click "Save Share".
Long-press the new share you've created and then select the option "Mount" when it comes up.
If all is well the icon on the right will turn green and you can now access your share by browsing to your mount point in your favourite video player.
Encoding video for optimal playback
-- COMING SOON --
Conclusion
As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I had a lot of trouble filtering through all the different posts on this topic and it took a lot of time for me to eventually find and experiment with each of these different options. Hopefully I've saved you all some time and helped out with some of the sticking points you might encounter. If anyone has anything they think I should add, just let me know.
I do plan on adding a section for streaming over 3G, but since I haven't tried it myself (I have a wifi-only XOOM) I can't really contribute to that side of things yet.
If you catch any typos or errors in the above text, please let me know asap and I'll fix them right up. This is my first thread here, and I haven't even made 8 posts yet so I couldn't include external URLs, I'll go through and edit some useful links in as soon as I'm able.

[XOOM 2] [INFO] Xoom 2 ME, Ubuntu Linux, and MTP

Thought I'd share some info regarding connection of the Xoom 2 ME. This may also apply to the Xoom 2 and Xyboards.
The Xoom 2 ME does not mount as USB mass storage, it supports MTP (and, I presume, PTP).
My laptop runs Ubuntu 11.10 with the GNOME 3 desktop. There is no file-browser or popup when the X2ME is plugged in, as there would be when a UMS device is connected. I suspect this is down to the udev config not having the USB IDs, so that's something to look into soon.
Banshee didn't detect it, so I installed the Gmtp application (sudo apt-get install gmtp) and this permits transfer of files to the X2ME. I got a rather poor upload rate of 2.5MB/s on a 1.4GB video file.
It was not possible to download a file from the X2ME using Gmtp -- I haven't yet tried any other apps.
The version of libmtp supplied with Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't recognise the X2ME device codes, though this has already been addressed by the developers. Maybe this will be in Ubuntu 12.04.
try this...that transfer rate is slow but is above full speed USB so the problem lays elsewhere
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1077572
Yeah, the syslog reports it as a high speed device, so my assumption is it's working at USB 2 speeds.
Just gave mtpfs a try. If we ignore some random and extremely long hangs of a minute or more, a file download ran at ~14MB/s and seemed to work OK. An upload ran at 40MB/s, but the resulting file was 0 bytes in length and was followed by a lengthy hang.
Will run mtpfs in debug mode to see if it shows why it's hanging. There are some other MTP utilities like gnomad2 that I might try as well.
A few quick updates. First, it seems that USB debugging must be enabled for MTP connectivity to work. When I disable it, the X2ME isn't seen at all by mtp-detect or other utilities.
Gnomad2 works, and was a little faster at upload than gmtp -- it peaked at an "astonishing" 4MB/s . Unfortunately its interface sucks for file access (it is, after all, designed more as a music transfer tool).
There is definitely a long delay every time libmtp connects to the device. This is normally over 1 minute and seems to consist mostly of USB device resets and then connection retries.
Enabling debug of mtpfs didn't flag up anything useful.
A useful aside, if you export LIBMTP_DEBUG=7 before running apps that use libmtp, it enables lots of debug output. Specific information on choosing the debug level are in the lib's README.
What I do is the following:
I have Root FTP on my Xoom which required also to install a script in my Linux Mint distro (would be the same for Ubuntu) and once I want to transfer, I can be via wifi or via USB cable; I just have to run the script in linux (2sec) and activate the Root FTP software on the Xoom and I can use any FTP software to remote in and transfer files to and from the Xoom.

Xoom 2 has no root access yet :-( . So this is not possible ... I have no trouble to transfer files to my xoom 2 me with smb network ... Thx for the infos Fluffy . I am trying few things now ...
Yeah, so far the simplest transfer method has been to use ES File Explorer to pull files across via SMB.

After having a quick play around for 5 minutes, iptables shows all policies as "allow". Services such as Airdroid are showing as bound to ipv6 sockets rather than ipv4 sockets, so I'm going to have a bit more of a dig around in that area.
For example, from "netstat -nlp" whilst Airdroid is listening on 8888:
tcp6 0 0 :::8888 :::* LISTEN
tcp6 0 0 :::8889 :::* LISTEN

This program is solve my problem and now i can wireless transfer files from my xoom 2 to my linux pc. Is not the most elegant solution but until now is the only solution that working for me ...
I finally solved my problem with airdroid filexpert and others similar apps by removing zumoservice from system applications. Probably this will create problems with motocast ( i can't check this, i am linux user)

xyboard
As far as the Xyboard is concerned it works fine for me on Ubuntu. When the device is connected I change from MTP to PTP. It's the second option under usb computer connection on the Xyboard. Once done, I've gotten access to the folders on the device and have tranferred videos, music, and documents. Hope this helps.

Hello
How has the uninstalling of zumoservice solving your Problem ?
I´m trying to mount my xoom 2 me on opensuse 12.2 with kde 4.11 and get an Error which could be caused by
the motocast installer cd which shows up on systems where the motorola drivers are not already installed.
This breaks the connection between linux and xoom. So i ask myself how i can shutdown this "service".
If this is caused by zumoservice i could uninstall it, but a deactivation by Titanium did not solved the Problem yet.
Thanks in advance! Michael
Try deactivate all applications you think that are related with motocast... I don't have now my tablet so i can't help you more, i will try later to find the list of all applications i had removed...

New from AppleTV-land

Hey All! So I got tired of waiting for either a root for the AppleTV3, or for Apple to man up and start allowing some of their App store love on the AppleTV. I was using both an ATV3 for Netflix and MLBTV and an old ATV1 for XBMC to stream SD content from a media server....
I got a discount on the MOJO, and it's been great, very easy setup process and rooting wasn't so bad either. Not nearly as cumbersome as the AppleTV was back in the day. Didn't realize I had an account on here from 10 years ago with a nifty Palm phone I had (Treo 700wx)... This was pre-iPhone mind you!
My challenges so far have been:
1) screen scaling - the edges of the screen are <just> off of my TV. XBMC on the appleTV had a scaling factor, and my TV doesn't have any options... I don't see anything in the App store either.
2) XBMC streaming just stops randomly from time to time, about 5 times per hour. I think it might have been the "full!screen" app. I'm going to keep an eye on it. I hope the wifi on the MOJO isn't to blame.
3) NTFS write: I have been able to unmount the stock android mount with Paragon, and then mount it back up with stickMount. But it doesn't happen automatic on startup. Maybe there's something in the startup "ini" that can turn off the stock mount? Then stickMount can run at startup...
4) "mirror" content - Rather than stream my content, I would like to setup a mirror, probably with FTP and Cloudberry backup.
But that's all gravy, basically I have been happy with the box. Happy to be here!

Glad to hear over all your enjoying it, can't remember the exact process but somewhere in the xmbc settings there is the ability to resize the display manually, I had to use it with my TV to remove the boarders properly too.

So that's interesting... If XBMC can do it, then it can be done in any other apps (or across the whole interface)... I saw another post about /sys/devices/platform/.../fb0 (http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?7948-SCRIPT-Modifying-Display-Scale). I checked that path on the M.O.J.O., but of course the hardware is different, plus I'm not sure if there are native methods to handle scaling. Something to look into more for sure. I'll start by finding the fb0 interface I guess...

Hi welcome,
#1 sounds like tv overscan
#2 I doubt it's a wifi issue, could be a XBMC buffering setting? (I don't use it much)
#3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52750447#post52750447, maybe more, do a search for ntfs
#4 I'm looking at the same, probably will just use filezilla

Has ANYONE got network shares to work???

I have tried just about EVERYTHING that I can think of to get the Nvidia Shield 16GB console to connect to a Linux server on my network, to no avail!! (This is an OpenMediaVault server that has all of my media files on it) I wanted to link the media shares on my home server to the Shield so that Plex could reference them; but no matter what I try it always tells me the user id/password is not correct! Even when I set up guest access and select the connect as guest option in Shield it still wouldn't connect... yet if I put ES Explorer on the Shield box and try to connect it to my server as guest there it works fine and I can see the folders in ES Explorer!
To double check, I shared some folders on my plain Windows 10 box and Shield couldn't connect to those either! Is there some 'secret' option or setting I am missing? I really would like to use Plex Server on the Shield but have all my media on my OpenMediaVault server... At least until Nvidia or Plex allows the movement of all it's internal libraries to adaptable storage.
I am beginning to think that connecting to any network shared folder is 'broken' in the Shield... Anyone else having these issues? Or knows what one has to do to 'set up' shared folders so that they can be connected to the SHield?
Frustrated....
Thanks in advance.

SMB does not work for me on Synology NAS
I have my Synology NAS in a domain. I've tried everything I can think of to get smb to work with no luck. It works fine from a Windows and MAC computer. Should I switch to using NFS? I had everything working properly before I put the Synology NAS in a domain and upgraded the NVIDIA Shield. I've tried local accounts, domain accounts...nothing works. Any suggestions? I have this wide open so it can use SMB1,2 or 3. I have encryption as optional. I'm going to try and see if I can debug this with the Synology logs. I'm close to just moving PLEX to a Windows computer and giving up.

User error...sorry everyone...i had vpn, pia turned on...
Hi, the recent firmware versions seem to have some serious bugs. I posted here about a problem formatting a flash card for adoptable storage(16GB model). The Nvidia forums were gracious enough to reply to me. If you scroll around there, it seems a lot of problems including this one that you post about started with more recent firmware. As they said to me over there, it's time to start flooding the help desk with these issues so that they feel more compelled to release a fix. I use an NAS myself and have been getting by with ES File Explorer Pro, which I already have owned for a few years. But you are not alone. I will say that I still love my Shield TV though. I was one who got sick of the PC upgrade race for gaming and has relegated herself to consoles and GeForce now is like magic to me. Most beautiful graphics I have ever seen on a little console, not to mention any noticeable latency at all. I mean the graphics are rendered off-premises, but the way they take advantage of the real-time decoding of the Tegra chip is just phenomenal, to the point that a bystander that you hand a controller to would never know you were streaming.
Hi,
I have a synology nas (DS414), and I fought with it for quite a while to make it work.
trick is the shield seems to accept only one sublevel directory, so:
\\NAS\Video will work
\\NAS\Video\Movies will fail...
Hope it helps!

That is crappy but explains what I had happen. When I logged in, I could see my user folder and other readable folders. When I logged in anonymously, I was able to see just the public folder that is read-only for people who connect to my network. However, I could not browse any of them. Mine goes \\NAS\User\UserRootDirectory\yadayada

Hmm... interesting... I wonder if I set up some Symlinks on my Linux box and limited them to only one sublevel, if that would work? I'll give it a go and let you know! Thanks!!

Linux On Dex - First Impressions

So, I am at work and I showed off Linux on Dex to some other Developers and Engineers here.
Impressed they were, but it's time to really dig in.
Here is what I love about it on first look:
Great to have a fleshed Linux experience on my phone
Great dev tools come with the image (IntelliJ and also Visual Studio Code and more)
Has plenty of apps to get you started and it's pretty thoughtful
Looks great at 1920x1080 as well as 2560x1440 resolutions on a monitor
Switching between Dex and Ubuntu is pretty snappy
Things I didn't like:
Just a LITTLE bit laggy sometimes
Need to either use ARM compiled apps or compile them yourself
The Default 10GB partition size was too small, so I would suggest using 15GB at least, after updates/upgrades (Ubuntu OS updates that is), you'll still have about 35% free space with 15GB disk
You cannot "install" this on the SDCard, only internal memory, so keep that in mind if you have the 128GB model and tons of apps
Once installed, you cannot delete the 3GB+ zip file you downloaded, so there is that wasted space as well (ok, I have not tried REALLY hard to delete it yet, but Google Files won't delete it, nor do I know the repercussions of deleting this file too)
I'm still trying to work out how to access the files on the device (outside the Linux container), not sure if it is possible, but I have not had a lot of time with it as of now
BONUS!!
When you are not in Dex mode (normal handset mode), you can still launch Linux on Dex, but you cannot get the full desktop experience.
Click on the Terminal icon under the RUN button and you can drop into the Ubuntu Shell and still use commands (like SSH-ing to servers using your certs and stuff).
Of course, the down side, small screen. Hey, in a pinch, when I am on the road and needs to SSH into an AWS instance and run a couple commands, I won't complain!!
All in all, I think this will be great for Dev's to play with, not sure how useful it REALLY will be, but I know from a DevOps/Architect/Engineer, it's nice to have as a backup to be able to actually take care of things without having to drag out the whole laptop.
All this, with a $20 adapter.
Any other thoughts for those that have used it?
Hello friend, I have mine installed on my 128gb Sdcard.
How did you get it on your SD Card?
Thanks!

Move the file from LoD folder to the SD card and reassign the file location in the Linux on Dex app, it worked for me but moved it back to internal storage to ensure best performance .
My impression? They will poorly maintain it and I suspect it will be discontinued without any real notice. Registration was broken for well over a week before signups ended. You cannot get in contact with anyone from the team. Care doesn't even know it exists.
I am yet to find a use case that improves upon remote access to an Ubuntu 18.04 VM running on a cloud or at home, but I'm not a developer.
Perhaps if you are stuck somewhere without an Internet connection and feel like coding somewhere in the mountains or in the jungle.. But then you would need a handy monitor, keyboard, mouse and a power source..?
I think I can sum this up in one simple sentence - "Because I can..."
It's like having linux on a PS3, because it could.
Haven't had a chance to use it yet but looks promising. That doesn't mean it will be supported very well, time will tell.
Hardware wise it should work very well, and there is ALWAYS a good reason to have a handy (mostly) self-contained PC with you in case you CAN'T access the net...
Would be great to get an idea of some real life use cases..
Would be very happy to see this project pick up some community developer attention, the platform is only as good as the tools developed for it.
In the absence of an official LoD forum for developers perhaps that community should be developed here.

I got this installed on my 8GB Note 9 today. I didn't get registered for the beta, but download the app and the Ubuntu image and got it all up and running today. My only complaint so far is it won't run full screen on Dex. That may be because I'm running the Pie Beta. Not sure how it operates on Oreo Dex.
I'll play around with it more later. I basically just plugged into my monitor and opened it up today.
Well, here is a real-life use case that saved me a TON of time and effort.
I set up the Linux on Dex with many tools and configs I need to be able to do my work (Sr. DevOps Architect/Engineer) on my AWS servers. I had an instance that was having some issues and was notified via the monitoring platform and was able to get my phone out, run the Ubuntu Shell and SSH/Fix the issue without ever having to pull out the laptop and tether it while on the train headed home.
There ARE some use cases where this will come in handy, but I do agree that these are real "edge" cases too. No "normal" user will ever really find this helpful.

Full screen on oreo.. Have you tried Dex max app?
planning to install LoD and curious if it can actually decompile and recompile apk's as a laptop would..?! mostly I'm interested in Themes for Samsung.. using few apk as templates to swap files, images and recompiling the apk, will it be able and will it properly sign it ?! and if so which way should I go?! do I need to install java, SDK, plugin I saw there ?!
any advice would be great.. thanx..

I think you need powersupply as well in the adapter for it to work.
