I literally have both the exynos and snapdragon variants sitting in front of me right now. I am going to return one of them tomorrow morning. Which one should I keep? This is for use on AT&T. Indecisiveness at its finest.
If you want to root and use roms, keep the exynos. If you want good service use the Snapdragon. Exynos is also faster than the snapdragon.

For those of you who have enynos on AT&T, how's the service? For those of you with snapdragon, would you switch to exynos if you could for free?
Same question I have.. About to buy an unlocked s8 for use on ATT but not sure which variant/model number is best as far as ROM support.

I had an AT&T S8+ for two weeks while I waited for my UK S8+ to ship. Performance wise they are pretty similar. The Exynos version seems a bit more fluid in scrolling and transitions but not enough to base a decision on on that alone. With both phones configured identically the Exynos version gets slightly better battery life. Again not enough to be a decision point. Not having AT&T's crap on it is satisfying and I know it'll receive updates faster. There's been three already. The UK version of Samsung Pay works fine in the U.S. including with MST. The only thing missing is deals and rewards. But if you're going to root or unlock the bootloader you'll trip KNOX so it won't matter. The Exynos phone gets better LTE and Wi-Fi speeds than my AT&T phone - go figure. Warranty, insurance, and service will obviously be a lot easier with a U.S. phone than an import. So there's no real compelling reason to get a non-U.S. phone unless you want to unlock the bootloader.

Your post was really interesting so since I had them both in front of me I decided to test the LTE and Wifi speeds on both variants using the same sim......... the difference was definitely significant, here are the results for others to see:
LTE Speed Test:
Round 1:
Exynos:
Ping: 33ms, Download: 71.41 Mbps, Upload: 11.16 Mbps
Snapdragon:
Ping: 66ms, Download: 46.71 Mbps, Upload: 6.4 Mbps
Round 2:
Exynos:
Ping: 201ms, Download: 70.55 Mbps, Upload: 10.91 Mbps
Snapdragon:
Ping: 33ms, Download: 51.65 Mbps, Upload: 7.26 Mbps
Round 3:
Exynos:
Ping: 169ms, Download: 70.15 Mbps, Upload: 11.39 Mbps
Snapdragon:
Ping: 105ms, Download: 49.23 Mbps, Upload: 5.34 Mbps
It's kind of insane that an international variant has such better download and upload speeds in the U.S. compared to the U.S. variant which has more compatible bands.
Too lazy to type in Wifi results but each performed about the same, Exynos a little better.

GOD DAMN! I didn't know it was going to be that much of a difference in speeds!
Yet again, I purchased a Docomo SH-04F in Japan and I was only able to get H+ speeds here in the states on AT&T - a LOT faster than my Nexus 6P which was on 4G LTE.
I personally bought a Exynos Samsung S8+ off of eBay and I haven't had any issues with it on AT&T. I just slipped in my SIM card and off I went.
If you want VoLTE You'll have to flash over the AT&T CSC with Jesse's kernel. A warning though, when you flash the CSC you'll get SOME AT&T bloatware. But who cares, you'll be rooted!
I'm running Renovate ICE 2.0 with AT&T CSC and Jesse's Kernel. I have yet to try Android Pay out.

Yeah surprised me too! Maybe the radios are configured in a more efficient way or something. I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and go with exynos. :victory: Only one last concern, flashing the AT&T csc will trip knox right? What are cons of tripping knox aside from no warranty, are there any other negatives? What the heck does knox even do lol

Haha probably! I too was thinking about getting the Sanpdragon version but I'm more into flashing ROMs and Kernels so I purchased the Exynos variant.
Not too sure if flashing CSC trips Knox. I know for sure rooting, custom kernels and custom ROMs do (obviously haha ?)
The way I read things is Knox let's the ROM know if the device is modified or unmodified. With it 'tripped' data sensitive apps like Samsung Pay, Secure Folder, etc will stop working. Some say S Health stops working but mine is working fine, it reads my heart rate, stress levels, etc without any issues. I don't really care about Samsung Pay because you can still use Android Pay without issues.

They use different radios which could have something to do with it. Now that all the U.S. carriers have unlimited plans there's an incentive for them to limit the speeds of people accessing their networks. The U.S. phones were designed for carriers first and customers second. So that could have something to do with it although I have absolutely nothing to prove that.
Well, I have a little different story here as in this thread.
Basically my G950F is pretty bad with the cell signal and I never saw speed test as high as the previous post. Southeast Michigan.

There is no such thing as an "AT&T network." There are a bunch of different regional networks acquired through their many acquisitions. The network hardware and bands available vary by region. Performance at the time a test is run is going to be greatly influenced by proximity to a tower and how that particular tower is configured. I travel a lot and can say I saw a pretty consistent positive variance favoring Exynos in cities where I speed tested both phones.

I understood and agree with most of it. I would think the bands of a major carrier (without tower/band sharing) are quited limited. It surely varies among that small pool throughout the carrier's coverage area. And does ATT have any major acquisitions after the Cricket one in recent years?
On the other hand I am not all stationary, nor have the impression about signal behavior based on only one location.
Totally possible that it's just the whole sub-urban area I stayed at for the past few days, or my sole (bad?) sample of the S8 unit.

First of all, hello everyone.
I am on Rogers with the Rogers/At&T version of the Nexus One.
I'm not getting HSPDA speeds on my phone.
The best speed I've got is about 1Mbps, which is not HSPDA speeds, or at least not as fast as it should be.
I live in Montreal,Quebec and Sherbrooke,Quebec. Which both cities are covered with hspa+ from Rogers.
rogers.com/web/content/wireless_network
when I go in settings, about phone,
Mobile Network Type : UMTS and HSPDA ( depending if it's on on or the other, i see it in my status bar 3G or H, cyanogen mod)
I know network speeds are slow when there is more people connected to the towers, and this is my point, I travel enough to understand when there is or not a lot of people using the tower. ( Sherbrooke is a relatively small city compared to Montreal)
I also get slightly better speeds in Sherbrooke.
What can explain these slow speeds
I am with Rogers in Vancouver, my download speed is 3.2 mbps at daytime and can up to 5 mbps at night. I heard that there are lots of nexus one from T mobile with diff band and can't receive the 3g network. Are you using the latest Korean Radio as well, its helps to boost the download speed as well!
I never got to 5 mbps.
maybe 3 mbps at night never more.
my radio is : 32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04
I live in the Okanagan in BC, and I can get about 2Mbps down/500Kbps up from Rogers on HSDPA with my N1. My wife, with her N1 can get in and around the same on Telus. As minniecafe mentioned, when I'm down in Vancouver I can clear the 3Mbps mark. It really all comes down to where you live and how crappy the Rogers equipment is there.
I get crappy speeds in the day in Ricmond Hill Ontario, but it picks up at night. my build.prop file is edited which helps. something you can search around for.
I'm on Rogers in Montreal and I also get 3 during the day and 5 during the night.
In Quebec City with Videotron, I get 5+mbps with my N1. Also, Videotron is much cheaper. Glad I switched from Rogers.
The reason you might be getting crappy speeds would be because Rogers' network is now oversaturated with all those iphone users. Doesn't help that Rogers' network is old technology now. They've been having random 3G outages like crazy over the past few months since the iphone 4 launched.

I average anywhere from 1.5-3.5 Mbps down and 1-2.5 Mbps up.
Interestingly, my friends get about the same on various Android devices && newer BB's. However, friends on iPhone4 are averaging 5-6 Mbps down consistently. Since both Nexus One and iPhone 4 do HSDPA 7.2 Mbps on Rogers, I find it suspicious that iPhone4 is so much faster on their network :\ Unless there's something I don't know about the iPhone.

I'm on 1700/2100 Mhz but heh, same thing.
My phone came stock with 5.08, I updated to 5.12 and I seem to get faster speeds and a bit better consistency...
You simply have to get a flashable zip file (check in cyanogen forums - download section for stable nexus one) and flash it in the recovery...that it, if you don't have an unlocked bootloader.
No matter the way, both are safe as long as you are using a decent recovery (newest clockwork or amon_ra) and as long as you VERIFY THE MD5 HASHES!
If you do that, the chances of bricking your phone are so small that we can completely ignore them

Thanks for the time you took to give me the blow-by-blow, but the specific info I need still eludes me: are the radio updates safe for 850/1900/2100 (AT&T) models? I'm afraid of -that-. After that, updating the radio itself is, to be honest, trivial.

I see, well I wish I could give you concrete proof that it works...but all I can say is that I have seen a few AT&T frequency Nexus Ones with newer radios...I hardly think they are dependent on the type you have since they come with the OS updates (for example, 4.06 came with Froyo)...these OS updates go on ANY Nexus One...Now these newer radios are korean, but I highly doubt it is any different...
I do understand your worry though as this is one of the only things that can brick a Nexus One...Hopefully someone can post actual facts...
I live around the Toronto downtown core, and I average around 2mbps - 3mbps.
However once at a friends house (who lives close to a tower) I managed to get 4.74mbps while on his SIM card (Bell) I was getting 5.32mbps.

Great to hear. Can you report any enhancements? Better signal? Better speeds?
I know that Hspa+ is just a "faux"-g network, it's not even close to the ITU specifications, but I thought hspa+ would be able to go neck, and neck with WiMAX. I was wrong.
Perhaps I am being stupid, and back-haul hasn't actually increased yet, but I was just disappointed when I did a speedtest.
While WiMAX constantly gave me 6mbps/1mbps, and even peaked at 7mbps/1mbps, hspa+ only gave me 4.5mbps to 5.5mbps down, and the upload was horrendous, it was like 256k!
Fortunately the ping on the evo and atrix were both good. To a local server they got around 150- 200 ms.
But really, I expected higher than 5.5/.256 from Hspa+. It's not even close to WiMAX, which was the first 4g technology.
Is anyone else experiencing these terrible "4"g speeds?
in los angeles, the highest i've ever seen is 3.2 Mbps. consider yourself lucky.
have they rolled out backhaul to you yet?
i'm guessing not, although their coverage map says otherwise. it doesn't matter where in LA.... LAX, downtown, west LA, hollywood, east LA. max i've seen is 3.2 with average 1-1.5 Mbps.

Note how my wifi scores lower than 4g.
im getting 3.5 down on a captivate that doesnt even support hspa+, the speeds will pick up, the HSPA+ tech is able to get to 14.4 eventually, so be patient, eventually ATT will have up to 21.6 on 3G, but no device supports better than 14.4 currently
The HSUPA+ (upload) threshold is supposed to be 5.76, so you figure that will be even higher also.
The speed is coming, the devices are just ahead of the network right now, and before you blame ATT, look around, when it comes to speed nobody else even compares, WiMax is a dead tech, LTE is the way of the future. Its like having a HD DVD player, it didn't win as the main standard.

I just switched from Sprint to AT&T and I for one will tell you that data service with AT&T has consistently been better in my case.
I am not in a WiMax area (neither are the majority of Sprint customers) and I can say that AT&T's 3g absolutely destroys Sprints 3g service. I used to average around 750 down and 400 or so up with Sprint at home and work. Now I average over 2500 down and 300 or so up. I actually still have my Sprint activated and can say that I have noted this trend over the course of a month. Now that I am confident that AT&T service is going to work out for me, I am terminating my Sprint account.
Yes, my upload took a minor hit, but for daily phone use, my download has more than made up for that. I can only hope that when AT&T actually activates their true HSPA+ backhaul, I see the same improvement.

Actually, I don't think AT&T has ever said what their HSPA+ speeds are SUPPOSED to be. T-Mobile has said theirs is 21 Mbps, I'd assume AT&T is probably the same, but like you said, they don't have any phones that do more than 14 Mbps right now. The SGS2 will have HSDPA 21 Mbps support. But of course, regardless of what they are CAPABLE of, when was the last time you saw a cell company in the US offer as much speed as their spec allowed?

The Captivate doesn't have HSPA+, it has HSPA, and you're correct that it's 7.2 Mbps. Actually, HSPA allows downlink speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps, but I'm pretty sure AT&T had only deployed 7.2 for their HSPA, and the Captivate only supports 7.2. Not sure if that's even software upgradeable or if it's limited by the radio hardware.
Actually, I'm curious if the HSPA+ upgrade automatically upgrades the speed of HSPA to 14.4 as well. Even if it does they'll probably lock the speeds lower so they can make sure only their HSPA+ phones get faster service. It's not like they are going to give us 14.4 Mbps on HSPA+ anyway. (At least I doubt they will)
OK, I found ATT's Statement on expected speeds:
"Question:
Just how fast is AT&T 4G?
Answer:
With enhanced backhaul AT&T is seeing network speeds up to approximately 6 Mbps. Actual speeds experienced will vary and depend on several factors, including location, device, environment, and capacity. LTE is expected to deliver even faster speeds.
Note: 4G speeds require a 4G device and are delivered when HSPA+ technology is combined with enhanced backhaul. 4G speeds are available in select cities with availability increasing with ongoing backhaul deployment. For information on currently available 4G markets, see 4G Speed from AT&T and select the Coverage map."
Source: http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-...locale=&_dyncharset=UTF-8&solutionId=KB115947
6Mbps is pathetic for pseudo 4G. I've seen regular 3G (HSPA) devices do just as good.
If that's the best their "enhanced backhaul" can provide on HSPA+, their LTE service will be a joke too.
my friend gets 9 Mbps download and .6 Mbps upload on his G2 here in Minneapolis. i get 5 Mbps down and 1.5 Mbps Upload on my iPhone 4.
you know if HSUPA is finely tuned, it can reach speeds VERY close to LTE. I don't understand what the complaining is all about. For them to fully roll out the "4G" network; it will take them the entire year, also with the acquisition of T-Mobile, we will definitely see improvements later on. Just give it some time, we'll see significant speed improvements my guess by Q3.

I think this GNote is HSPA+. My results from Speedtest in Atlanta, GA...(see below/attached).
I wondered the same before so scoured around a bunch and saw that ATT speeds can vary between 1mpbs - 7mpbs down, and .5-1.5mbps up depending on various factors.
It really depends on where you are. Most importantly, how many other AT&T customers share the same tower as you. Typically, in a big crowded metropolitan area, speeds are lower. My HSPA+ speed rarely exceeds 1mbps. Often in low 100kbps range.
That's why if you want speed, LTE is the only way to go. Even without counting on future proof, the fact that very few ppl are using the separate LTE network (no, it doesn't share the same network as HSPA+) at this time.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. That's why I want to know what you got before HSPA+ and after HSPA+.

That's unfortunate. I'm afraid I may be int he same boat. I don't feel I need LTE, but I need more than what my Captivate is giving me.
In DFW I usually get 6-8 mbps down and 1 up on my GNote.
On my skyrocket, which is LTE, I get 30-60 down and 10 to 15 up.

You should read this. Should answer all your speed questions quite definitively!
I typically get this sort of speed on H+
Something must happened with AT&T in South Orange County, California, I used to achieve max 1.3 - 2 mbps, right now I am consistent and getting 3.2 and sometimes in some places even higher, the highest so far that I achieved was in Huntington Beach Home Depot parking lot ;-) 5.7 mbps.
Best speeds I got at the end of my driveway, just north of Baltimore, MD was 8mbps down and 2.5mbps up. But my average is more like 4 down and 1.5 up. I'm using an ATT iPad Unlimited Micro-SIM card.
Never has speed issues with my Note on ATT. Here's a recent test.

That's what I am getting now (1.3) so hopefully I'll end up with 3.2+ with the note. That would be enough I think.
I'm in Philly and my speeds suck no matter what. Location is the main thing to look at here.

Is your captivate stock?
Some of the custom roms will do wonders for your data speed
Ran a few speed tests side by side against a stock captivate and it was not even close specially in uploads
Im getting around 600 to 900 KB over UMTS,HSPA+ is still being implemented in my area as we speak

Nope, currently running the AOSP ICS rom.
I own both phones. The AT&T 810 and the international 815. To my surprise every speed test that I have done the AT&T version is faster than the international 815. Can’t explain it I would assume that each phone had the same hardware. My 815 and my 810 running on the same LTE band and I have tried different speed tests in different parts of the city even when the LTE band changed. For data download the AT&T is much faster. Again I have tested both phones side-by-side over and over and I would have assumed the 815 would’ve been the same or a little quicker. Even when I ran the quadrant speed test the AT&T beat my international version, not by that much but it still was faster poster just.
On top of this, my wife has a S6 edge and it beats my 815 in all the speed tests, it’s comparable to my 810.

I have attached some pictures of two different tests. On the 810 you can ignore the 175 because that was accidentally on Wi-Fi.
A couple of things I have noticed in the carousel of homepages on the 815 I cannot scroll around and around you will come to the end of your homepages on the left or the right. On the AT&T 810 it will carousel around.
The AT&T screen has a yellow to it were my 815 is very white to the point I think something’s wrong with the 810 (AT&T). That I will be returning the phone for screen without the yellow hue to it.
That's a cool observation. On a similar note, I found my G4 to be faster than my AT&T G3 by about 3mbps download.

Do you have the 815 directly on AT&T service or through one of their MVNOs like Straight Talk or Cricket?

I have an 815 intl version on ATT in So. cal. , and trying Ookla speedtest all over town, I've yet to hit even 10mbps download, and about the same for upload. Is there a setting i don't have enabled? I'm using the nano-SIM from my Nexus 6 with an adapter to make it fit in the G4...but that can't be it, right?

Yep, that's a good download speed, and likely because you have the actual ATT version. I have the unlocked intl 815 version, which supports all the ATT LTE bands, but doesnt seem to be using them. I may try getting a new sim tomorrow, instead of using my old nexus 6 sim.

Also, were you on wifi? Those two numbers sound like wifi ratios. LTE uploads are usually closer to the dl speeds than that, but not always.

The 810 shows 4G LTE icon. The 815 only shows 4G.
How are you verifying the 815 is actually getting LTE? As the images don't support.
My S7 Edge G935FD (dual SIM international version) gets only "4G" on T-Mobile in the San Francisco Bay Area, and never "LTE". Is this a "4G vs. LTE" naming issue, or does it lack the band T-Mobile requires for LTE? It also gets "H+" often, in the same location that my old S5 had full bars LTE.
Speed tests with the SpeedSpot app range from 17Mbps to 33Mbps down, and 3.75 to 7.5Mbps up on "4G", but only 5Mbps down and 1Mbps up in H+ areas.
I bought it from tropical_mobile on eBay.
I think 4g and lte are the same..

Just naming issue with international version.
@kvsandeepreddy is right.
LTE means LongTermEvolution which is the so called 4th generation of Mobile Networks. So LTE is 4G
1G = Analog mobile Network, I think
2G = GSM and EDGE
3G = UMTS and HSDPA
4G = LTE
FD version is released for asian countries... back in india we use 4g instead of lte
Poorer connectivity on S7 than S5

Well, that means that the S7 dual-SIM gets poorer reception than my old single-SIM S5:
In the same spot in the building (at my work desk), I'd get full LTE bars on the old S5, but only H or H+ at best on the new S7 Edge dual SIM. In practice this means ~6x slower downloads and ~7x slower uploads. Pretty ****ty.

No that's not what it means. The g935fd version is meant to be able to switch to any international firmware version. There are several different modems for each region. You are going to just have to flash different modems in Odin and see which one works best for your region. This does not trip knox or void warranty as long as you do it right because you are flashing official modems. As I said in the other thread you were in, do your research.
Can someone link me to the best modem to used on the dual sim model in the states?
Which modem did you end up using? I am also wondering which version is best in the US.

I'm just using the UAE firmware that the duos came with. It's updated with the June security patch. Only issue I've had is slower than normal download and upload speeds on at&t. It's not that big of a deal, just annoying. I think it has more to do with atts provisioning on their network. I'll post a solution if I figure it out, whether it's a different csc, apn settings or some device setting on my account.
4G is called LTE in USA. If you are getting 4G. That means you are getting LTE.
Cheers.

Yes, you are correct. However, I should have clarified that my statement is based on connection speed tests not on network symbols in notification bar. My slower speeds are in comparison to other 4g devices being tested in the same location on the same network.

Yep. I can confirm the same thing. I have 2 s7 edges. One is a DUOS and the other is AT&T branded. Tested both repeatedly and found that the AT&T branded device is getting way faster speeds than the DUOS. In my particular area the AT&T phone was reaching up to 60 Mbps while the DUOS was only hitting 30-40 Mbps. Very curious on how to fix this since this phone has all the necessary bands to support LTE in the states.

At least you're getting that. My speed tests are consistently in the .72 to 5 Mbps range on the DL and 1-7Mbps on the upload, which is basically about half to a third of what my other AT&T devices are getting in the same location at same time.

It's not just the bands. AT&T is known for prioritizing their branded phones vs. BYOD phones. It's done by EMEI ... they have a list of all their branded models in a DB and they get priority. TMO doesn't much care. I tested my Duos yesterday and TMO gave me 59.4/12.8 network transfer. It's as good as my 6P. My AT&T sim is in sim1 and is restricted to 2G which is fine since I need calls and texts only from it since it's a work #.
And it does support most of AT&T's bands except band30 which is really new. 4G everywhere else is LTE here as was said in other responses in this thread. It's most likely AT&T deprioritizing the phone as it's a BYOD.

It doesn't have band 12 so I'd save your money. Band 12 is just the deeper penetration 700mhz anyway which around me (SF area) can't be found. My Nexus 6P which has band 12 never connects to anything but band 4 .. ever.

I noticed this as well with my 6p. Supposedly band 12 was to save us all but my phone prefers band 4. I only got a glimpse of band 12 the other day then the phone switch switched back to band 4 when I toggled wifi on and off.
