Hi and thanks for reading and answering.
I've got an HTC Magic vodafone (google branded) and have yet to receive the OTA donut update (I live in Portugal). When I tried the manual install it fails saying that there's no signature blah blah blah. The phone isn't rooted and there's a CRC1 code (don't know what that means)
I've tried to search for answer but every post reffers to cooked roms and I just want to make the official update.
So if someone could please tell me (in the most noobish way possible) how to do it I would be very much gratefull.
Also please don't use letter codes (like OTA for over the air) because most of them are unknown to me.
i dont believe your going to be able to update your phone manually without having root access
root would be like... say how if your on windows you have your "administrator" which can install and change things on your computer but a normal user wouldnt be able too?
thats pretty much what it is... just on linux the admin is "root" and because your not root(the admin) on your phone (your just a user) I dont believe you can do updates even though it is a release from android without having root access other than that you might have to wait for the update
Well as I said before, I'm really noob when it comes to android, so in case of your solution, is there a really big noob guide for rooting and updating (preferably without deleting my stuff)
I updated mine manually and i havent rooted my phone. So you should be able to do it, try downloading the file from another source
Them I happily accept suggestions to where to download the update
If you want a non-rooted phone and for your carrier to supply Donut, there's something wrong with the software on your phone, though it could be as small as a failed download and next Over The Air update will work again. Try erasing all your data with Reset To Factory (it's in the settings menu somewhere) and wait for OTA again.
(Are Vodafone even pushing Donut updates out OTA yet? I didn't think they were.)
If you want to root your phone and install a Donut ROM yourself, read around the FAQs in this forum. Essentially you need to get the Android SDK, fastboot Amon_RA's Recovery, perform a nandroid backup and install a ROM. nk02's Donut is just plain Donut with root, there are other options out there.
please close and delete this thread as I already receive my OTA update. everything is fine except Voice Search (it's not even there )
So i have been using eugenes initial build of the jpm froyo. Installed all the updates he had for it at the time using clockwork. It was kind of laggy so i was toying around with the oclf by ryan za. It asked to install/root through its own root feature. Now since i have done so. I lost root access. Does anyone know any way i can re-root my phone without having access to a computer. Losing root access has disabled my ability to flash any of the updates that have come out in recent weeks and its paining me i heard others have experianced this losing root glitch. And got flamed when i asked this question on eugene373s former rom thread.
Any advice.
Ps. ( having a blutooth keyboard and mouse hooked up to this phone on 2.2 Is the best thing since sliced bread)

Im assuming in the OCLF app now there is an option to "unroot" your phone? for ****s and giggles click that see if it didnt just get mixed up since you told it to root when you were already rooted. If that doesnt work download Galaxy S Rooter from the market and try that. if THAT doesnt work i would say wipe data and try either of them one more time. and if all fails youll most likely have to flash stock firmware and root from there
I have actualy tried both of those options. Haha, I'm looking at my final option of flashing back to stock via odin, but that requires a computer which I do not have access to. I figured id see if anyone had some other root reroot option I didn't know about.... or if there is a way to unroot from this semii rooted stage I'm stuck in. The phone thinks it rooted but when I try to use any program that requires root access it force closes the app etc.
FIRST. All credit goes to nathanlewan for putting all this together, I am reposting his post so everyone can find it.
SECOND
The unrevoked team is in the final stages of sending out an official Unrevoked package now, so this is for the EXTREMELY desperate folks who want root privileges now.

Without further ado, here's nathanlewan's post, confirmed to work by users in the thread.

I'm still new to Android... in fact, just got my first Incredible not but a day ago. In that time I have been trying to figure out how to get root on it so that I can enable the WiFi Hotspot without having for fork out more money.
With that said- am I to understand that Verizon issued an OTA update that disables unrevoked from working properly? I have been completely unsuccessful using that tool to root the phone. I either get hung up at 'waiting for root' or 'we didn't get root.'
Should I wait for a new release of unrevoked or am I doing something wrong?
Just wait for unrevoked to release the update it should be any day now the you can root your Incredible with it

sounds like you have no choice but to wait,if unrevoke isnt working for you then you must already be on the recent OTA that patched the exploit

Pretty much correct... If you applied the Nov update VZW pushed, and you want to use the Unrevoked tool to root & install a custom recovery... you have to wait, as the current Unrevoked (v3.21) doesn't work on the Nov VZW update.
This can happen with ANY firmware update no matter which phone or carrier. i.e. they "plug" the hole that was exploited to gain root. So the method to get root needs to be found/changed/updated.
While waiting for the unrevoked update this time, there are some other possibilities... see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9449867&postcount=250
BTW, you don't need ROOT to get the wifi hotspot feature... see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...ble/Guides&Tutorials#Tethering_out_of_the_box but remember the warnings... it does go against VZW's terms of service, so if you do this, you do it at your own risk!!
Just got a system update notification... taking forever to install... anyone know what it entails?
Edit: SO I see that Sprint ID / EW!!!) was installed, and my Firmware is 2.2.1, and baseband is S: P100.08 S: EB28, and Build is SPH-P100.EB28...
Problem is, I can't remember if that's new or not...lol. Damn me for not paying attention, and DAMN ME for thinking that the possibility of a HC release was possible... stupid hopes and dreams....
Edit II: Just found this report... compared to the rest of the updates, the SGT got the short end of the stick YET AGAIN!!!

"The Samsung Galaxy Tab update adds Sprint ID features."
I updated also and 2.2.1 is new, also ot updated the modem as seen by hitting the soft menu key during the update and looking under about phone, baseband. I would like to see if the update package had a whole modem.bin in ot but i installed the update before I got the temp file. The last update only had a modem file of a few kbytes so it just patched the modem. It would be great to get hold of a whole modem.bin as there are none for the sprint tab currently.

I was just going to as if anyone was able to grab the modem.bin. Hopefully we get luck and someone is able to do so.
What about root status? I'm hesitant to update if it breaks root because of the issues I've had with the stock gallery app (removed it via a root file explorer).
I updated my rooted Gtab and the root seems unaffected. I use mine without a data pack - wifi only. I used the root to get rid of the activation nagger in the notification bar - and it's still gone and SuperUser is still operating.
However: Sprint ID only works through a Sprint Subscriber Data Pack - not over WiFi, unless you have a company "Keyword". Alas - I don't like Sprint ID anyway.
sprint tv
i installed the "sprint" id, and it says in the description about sprint tv. i had this on the evo, but i feel like i'd make better use of it on a 7 inch screen. any ideas how to get it on the tab? i searched the market under the sprint tab and had no luck finding it.. any suggestion would be great
I got the OTA shortly after trying to install clockwork and patching an overclocked kernel. I wasn't expecting the OTA until Monday, but I went ahead and try to install it (it failed, of course).
I managed to pull the downloaded zip file out of my cache and check if there was a modem.bin. Unfortunately, once again, there's only a modem_delta.bin, so no luck there.
I tried running the update again manually after rolling back my kernel, and apparently I still had a modified boot.img, so after doing a full wipe, rolling back to DJ30, and then manually updating to EA24, I was able to get the EB28 update installed, with all of its Sprint ID goodness. It's very late now so I don't have time to actually play with it much, but I'm actually happy to be back to an official build. I'm hoping they fixed a few of the bigger issues I had with EA24, but I somehow doubt it.
Previously I was rooted and had the Bauxite kernel. I flashed the original kernel back and then installed the EB28 update. I lost root, so I tried superoneclick again. It said it rooted but superoneclick locked up while "Remounting system with read-only access..." My tab is unresponsive but the buttons are still lit up.
Update: I finally got it to reboot and I am rooted again.

Would you mind attaching your file for the original kernel? I forgot to make a backup when flashing Bauxite.

I applied the update last night and can confirm that root is still intact, so the super one click method should still work if you haven't rooted your tab prior to this update.
Unfortunately, what is also intact is my long standing issue with the stock Gallery app (rogue sensor usage causing massive battery drain). Ah well, removed with Titanium backup, replaced with Just Pictures, problem fixed. Again.
Other than the addition of Sprint ID, this seems to be a pretty minor update. Could be my imagination, but it seems a tad snappier than the EA24 update. Could be the incremental increase to Android 2.2.1. But other than Sprint ID, there are no major new features.

Thanks for the useful info. I was hesitant to run the update after the previous hassles. I've just updated mine without any noticeable detrimental effect.
regards,
Tony C.
Root was not intact for me after upgrade. I tested with root explorer, and font changer. Both failed after trying to get root permission. I just used SOC after upgrade. All was good...
@lloydcabraham
Here is my backup kernel prior to the new EB28 update. Sorry for the delay, I've been engrossed in basketball.

Thanks I really appreciate it!
I was previously rooted with SuperOneCLick (rageagainstthecage method). I did not unroot prior to the upgrade. The upgade said it failed but a look at About Phone proved otherwise. I would suggest that people unroot before the upgrade but it did not matter for me.
After the update I no longer had root access. But I was able to root with SuperOneClick again. I have had no problems since the upgrade/reroot. There are no interface differences that I have spotted so far.
Can someone please post the application name for the Sprint ID so I can remove it. I had gotten rid of all the Bloatware and now after this update I get this which I will not use.
By the way I was rooted with Super One Click and using the Once Click lag Fix and after update I did lose Root. Just re-rooted and am fine now. Got scared because the orientation was not working and I thought it broke it. Sohow the update set the orientation lock.
Also I deleted a couple files hoping these were the new Sprint ID update.
Does anyone know what they are and if I need them can somone please post them? I will take the best guess of what I remember them being called.
Perhaps someone can post there Sprint file names.
SprintAndroid
SprintUpdate
Thanks,
Mark
Can someone post the update.zip for the update? I got the OTA notification but when it attempted to install (using Stock recovery), it failed, somehow.
Thanks in advance.
I need the update.zip as well.
Hell, mine still tries to update my tab to EA24 which always failed. Can't even get the notification for 28. Time to go to Sprint and raise some hell....

My sprint galaxy tab was updated the EB28 the day I got it (two days ago), today I was trying to get CWM on the tab, got stuck at Samsung screen, so I used odin and flashed back to DJ30 (without baseband, which is already at EB28) and have been trying to get back to EB28 since.
Can any of you kind gentlemen who updated to EB28 do a roto backup and upload the file? I think this is the only way I can get back into EB28 at the moment.
Many thanks!
So I've searched around the net, and am not 100% sure what to do. Here is my situation.
I "rooted" my phone awhile ago, or so I thought, but now despite having superuser and trying to do the fix and update for it, it doesn't work, and no app can gain root access, however when I try to run droid easy root, it says i'm already rooted.
I'm running GB with build # 4.5.1_57_DX5-35 (if that helps).
All I want to do is re-root or whatever and install a rom (miUi specifically) over the default gingerbread motoblur one. I'm on a Mac btw and don't know much about this stuff...Any help is appreciated.

use the zergrush (aka doomlord) method posted in my signature, should fix you right up
edit: eww just saw where you said you were on a mac, not sure if this will work for the mac, i know that superoneclick also now uses the zergrush method. perhaps there is a mac version of that.
I'll try it out using VMware fusion and my XP partition...Hopefully it works. Might have some questions on the process if there aren't detailed instructions. Thanks.
