I was hoping to learn the differences between certain backup methods. The most common i saw is via recovery (in my case twrp), via titanium backup and another via adb command even without root which i saw in one of the threads here in xda.
First, in terms of "backup coverage" how do they compare to one another? Secondly, which among the three would most put ur phone back the way it was before u wipe or factory reset it
I hope you could input your opinions on this and suggestions.
Thanks in advance!

A backup through recovery is a called a nandroid. This backs up everything on your phone including your ROM, kernel, apps, settings, etc. This will allow you to restore back to the previous state of your phone after doing a full wipe.
Titanium backup only backs up your apps and app data. This is useful when you want to switch ROMs and restore your apps in the new ROM.
Usually when switching ROMs I first use titanium backup, then I create a nandroid backup, and finally I flash the ROM. If I like the ROM I use titanium to restore the apps that I previously backed up, and if I don't like the ROM I restore my nandroid

Doing a backup with twrp, cwm or thru adb (nandroid backups) are basically image files of your phone at any given moment in time. If you restore one of these backups your restoring your phone to exactly how it was at that moment in time. Titanium backup and Helium backup just backup cached data at that particular moment in time. Using these apps will only restore the data you specified when you did the backup and nothing else. Say you borked an install of a ROM, Titanium backup would be of no use in getting your phone working again as it only has data and not a system image. You would need the images backed up by twrp to get the phone working again then you could use the titanium backups to restore any newer data saved if say you used an old twrp backup.
whoah! thanks guys! I was supposed to quote you but since both of you really helped me understand it now, this thanks goes to the both of you.

One last thing, when using a Titanium backup ( im using the pro version), how do i backup to make sure I cover all that needs to be backed up? There are a lot of options im not sure which to select and what to do. I hope you could enlighten me on this one as well.
Thanks again in advance!

With the pro version u can run a batch backup of all apps.
To do this open the app, press the menu button in the top tight corner, and select Batch.
Then choose Backup all user apps. From there you can select/deselect apps. When you are done choosing the apps that you would like to backup, click on the green check mark in the top right corner to start the backup.

I stopped using Titanium and switched to Helium a while back and can't really remember how Ti works exactly. I do know you should never restore system apps data just user apps data so I don't even bother backing up systems apps. I think with Ti I would just do an initial backup of all user data and apps and then periodically do a backup of newer user data and apps, or something to that effect in the menu. I do like Helium better as its interface is better, never could figure out how to backup or restore sms, call logs and the dictionary using Ti. Helium is much more straight forward and simpler (not as many options) and it does backups on a set schedule to my box account. I'm sure you can do all that with Ti too it was just not a very clean app.
thanks again for the replies..
@ chromium96
i think it is the same as clicking the box with check icon beside the menu, it brings me to the page the same as where you are leading me to but in just one click. Though im not so sure if it is really the same one.
I did a backup now but made a user app + system data.
kzoodroid mentioned not to backup system. Should I really not backup the system? Im quite confused with the terminologies of TI coz it says backup "user apps". Does this only refer to the apps and not the settings or data in my phone? does the backup "system data" refer to the settings and other data on my phone? if I choose only backup "user apps", would this only backup the apps and nothing else?
@ kzoodroid
could you explain further why I should never backup systems apps?
Lastly, is Helium really better than TI? or it depends on user preference?
Thanks again!
there are 2 kind of apps stored in your phone, system apps, only accesible with root privilege, and user apps,
system apps are phone, browser, wallpapers, etc, this are the basic apps to make your phone to work
user apps are all the stuff you, the user, install on your phone
the first one can be found, via file managers on /system/app
user app in /data or in sdcard for apps can use this option
the user app back-up, via Tb or others create a back-up of /data and apps you choose to install
restoring a system app via Tb is dangerous cause if you've switched rom the /system/app can be different, so restoring can cause trouble or misbehavior on your phone
/system/app back.up can be used only if you, before deleting a system app, want to have a copy to restore in future, but only if you still on the same rom

Thanks for the reply! kinda getting an idea what you mean.. if I backup the system also, then i put a new rom and it may be different from my current roms system so it might mess it up. so just backup user app and restore this after installing new rom then it would be ok and back to how it was before i installed a new rom? Do i understand it right?

right man,
only back-up user apps and data, if you like you can also back-up call log and messages, I usually do this, so when I flash a new rom I usually restore apps +apps data, messages and call log via Tb

I found the ADB backup doesn't work as well as the other methods. I found some apps didn't seem to get backed up, and at least one didn't work after restoring (though this could be because I used Titanium Backup to restore the app from the ADB backup file).
Hi guys,
Today I updated my Note 3 from Omega V6 to V11, I got it wrong a couple times so had to full wipe twice or so and restart the process.
Beforehand I had done a titanium backup, cwm backup. I copied them onto my lappy, with the efs backup also.
Once I had Omega v11 installed I booted into cwm and tried to restore from my backup, this sent me into a bootloop so I started the process again. This time I tried restoring from titanium backup and it did a great job, but my picture gallery is missing alot of photos and photos I had in hide it pro are gone.
I tried restoring hide it pro and gallery in titanium backup as a single restore task/job and still didn't do the trick.
I'm guessing the reason why I go into a bootloop when I tried to restore from cwm is because my backup was from 4.3 and now I'm on 4.4.2?
Is that right?
The day before I actually went from v5 to v6 so maybe that's why my hide pro files are gone? because omega installed it again?
After I had installed v6 I deleted my v5 backup files and made new ones.
Unfortunately I didn't check my files after installing v6 and I deleted my old backups without thinking, so I'm not sure if they were there after a v6 install.
I know I should have done a manual backup, lesson learnt, I had alot of sentimental photos I was meant to share but hadn't gotten around to it yet..
Is there anyway I can get my files back? Or anyway I can restore from my cwm backup?
Thank you.
Go into titanium backup but mind that you will need the pro edition as long as i can remember, press menu key and see under special backup and restore
Extract from Nandroid Backup .
CLICK that and choose the backup you did using cwm and find your desire app
I hope this works for you . I hate it when VAULT or such apps loose your pics when you upgrade the app itself

not sure if this is the same problem that you have but it looks like my phone internal wipes each time I upgrade the Omega ROM where it takes out the internal.
Maybe teaching the 'sucking eggs' thing here but it isn't just a case of the apps are looking at internal memory instead of over on your extSDcard is it? Titanium and many other apps need to be told to save/restore to/from the extSDcard.- maybe it's all sitting there waiting for you to point the apps to the right place?

One more thing guys, I was just browsing through es file explorer and noticed my downloads folder is gone. Does titanium or cwm backup, backup folders? I just tried restoring "Downloads" in titanium backup and extracting from nandroid, and still no Downloads folder in my directory Just wondering maybe if the files are named something else?
Otherwise it was erased when I went from v5 to v6 and backed up the newly erased and clean v6 files, not realising my files are gone.
Thanks
When you switch ROMs, what's the easiest way to restore everything else? Android will restore apps (and their data?) but how do you restore all your shortcuts, folders and such?
There are so many cool ROMs on here to try but it takes me hours to restore everything, I usually just try one and end up keeping it.
Titanium Backup Pro, take a full system backup, after flashing a new ROM just restore the install missing apk option only, and other than text messages and call logs, everything will be restored.

I used to backup apps using ES and also install them back and finally after installing all apps, I used to recover my Nova backup, which would setup my homescreen, icons, widgets and shortcuts...
I'd recommend not to backup and restore app data for all apps as I see few people reporting issues with it

So, you DO NOT recommended using an automated system to restore apps and data?
What do you do instead? Do you just re-install all of them manually? That's so time consuming, it takes me almost a whole day!

If it's not recommended to backup and restore app data, then isn't it easier just to use Android's built in app backup and restore?
I have a 64GB Nexus 6P and am upgrading to 128GB. I backed up and restored via TWRP. I removed security before the backup. However, when I restore, I can't add a Nexus Imprint - it keeps saying enrollment was unsuccessful before it even lets me try to read my fingerprint. However, if I do a clean wipe & install, the fingerprint reader works fine.
Any suggestions?
seems to me something i borked in your backup. probably just going to have to start fresh. unless... of course... your backup contains a probram or xposed module that could be causing the problem. then it would just be a process of elimination to determine which one.

I've tried it twice (full cycle, backup, wipe, restore) with the same issue. I haven't installed Xposed yet.
I don't think this can be a program issue, I think Google added something at the OS level.
I hate starting fresh. Even with Titanium Backup, it takes forever.
That happened to me as well. Only way that worked was a complete clean flash for me.

I don't know if it's just my experience, but TiBu takes for-EVAR to restore APKs (not data, thats fast). Just forget it for any sizable app like Chrome or Facebook. So, I started using another app called AppWererabbit strictly for purposes of backing up/restoring APKs. With root privileges, it'll batch install over 100 apps fast. Then for a subset of apps that are non-trivial to set back up, i'll use TiBu to restore the data. Unfortunately AppWererabbit seems broken on Marshmallow for me. Also, Pro key is needed to do anything worthwhile.
I've looked into using TiBu's feature for creating flashable zip's to skip all that but it has yet to work for me a single time. I have, however, had promising results with some modest testing of this app called ZipMe that is in beta (also, tested on a Nook HD+ not Nexus6P)
Also, am I to understand you are trying to restore a nandroid for one device onto another?

Thanks for the app recommendations. I tried ZipMe, it didn't work. Or at least I couldn't tell that it worked... It processed for hours but there wasn't an output zip.
Yeah, not impressed with Titanium Backup right now, either. Pretty frustrating experience overall.

It's a bug with TWRP and the 6p, after restore in TWRP, use the TWRP file manager navigate to /data/system and delete locksettings.db file. Reboot and the secured lockscreen will be gone, just set up a pattern lock again and the secured lockscreen will work as normal with your saved fingerprints.

For this problem deleting locksettings.db is not working. This is different problem than you talked about.
It's been discovered in other threads that there is a hardware key associated with the fingerprint scanner. Which means you can't restore a TWRP data backup from one device to another. That sucks bc this is my main motivation for keep a TWRP backup. Hopefully, a solution will be found.

I don't know about transferring devices but restoring a backup and then using the twrp built in file manager to delete locksettings.db is what I do with my backups. And it works every time.
Right, that works for restoring TWRP backup to same device. But if you get another 6p for any reason, and then restore this same backup to it, the fingerprint scanner will not work.
Hey! I was asking if you guys know a good way to fully backup a phone (like cloning it).
I would try some ROM like PA and some other but I also want to be able to good back to the state I'm right now (fully configured, with all apps I need, and when restoring this backup I would like to have exact same app data, configuration, account, everything in fact).
I don't even know if it's possible x)

TWRP. If you are installing ROMs TWRP would already be there and all you would have to do is create a backup.

App data IS backed up by TWRP but anything you see in internal storage is NOT backed up by TWRP.
The way I do it is:
Titanium Backup for all user apps
An app called pairs for Bluetooth and WiFi backup and restore
Create a Nova backup for my home screen setup
Transfer any media (such as photos and music) to my PC
And then I go about flashing a new ROM/clean flashing my current ROM.
I do end up having to go through my ROM settings over again, as well as setting up system apps again, but it's not a huge deal to me.
This feels like the "cleanest" way to backup and restore, so it's a small price to pay! (For me at least lol)
Can you confirm that even chrome app data is being saved and restored? Eg: cookies
Thanks!
