Always On Display - reverse portrait? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I can't believe that no one has been asking about this and/or is annoyed by this yet...
But the headphone jack is on the bottom of the phone
therefore if you stand it on a wireless charging stand, and listen to music - you need to have the phone upside down on the stand.
Maybe I am just anal but I really want my Always On Display to not be upside down when I am listening to music and charging
I have autotools and tasker, so I know how to force rotations and such.
Also I have Adaptive Auto Rotate which is a cool app that lets you do per-app orientation settings, etc.
But I CANNOT get the always on display to reverse portrait for the life of me.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I personally hate the wires charger because you cannot use the phone while it is charging.
Using wired headphones and a wireless charger sounds painful.
Instead of tweaking the phone as you suggested in your post, why not just invest in some wireless headphones?
Samsung Level U Pros are like 40 dollars on Amazon, I use them and I'm pretty happy with them.

In my opinion, wired headphones provide better audio quality - also you can get much higher end wired headphones with more choices, etc
Listening while plugged in and on charger is fine because whenever I want to do something on my phone, I just pick it up and do it - then put it back down.
Sure, you aren't charging during those moments when you have it in your hand, but oh well.
Also the convenience of putting the phone on a stand without fiddling with connections to charge, lends to putting it on the stand more often throughout the day - just as its "resting place".
So yeah, you can't do much while its charging (besides swiping and tapping without holding it) - but you put it down there more often as just a place to put it down - so I think its a "net profit" for the situation..
... Still hoping for someone with a potential idea in regards to my situation, not just a "don't do that"
Thanks!

I think this is why samsung start selling the pad version of the charger, not the stand like in s7 edge time,
They notice,
This gonna happen sooner or later.

Grounding Issue

If you put two devices on to charge (XDA or XDAII) and whilst holding one, touch the other with the back of your hand, you get an electric shock!
Also I've just started playing around with an FM transmitter in my car and if the XDAII is charging I get stupid amounts of noise which makes the music almost unbearable to listen to... if I unplug the XDAII charger the noise instantly goes and the music is crystal clear... anyone else experienced anything like this or have any suggestions of a fix?!?
I have a Brodit car cradle for my XDA2 which has a built in charger connected to the cigarette lighter in my car. I don't have any background noise or static / interference when it's charging. Only the occasional search n scan noise as I change cells to different cell sites.
Might be an issue with your particular unit, though I didn't have my 1 together with the 2 long enough to test the charging thing you experience. Have you tried interchanging your 1 and 2 for someone else's unit (if you know someone who has)?
Cheers
Anthony
Yeah... I work for a company who develops software for XDAs for the courier market so we have loads of them lying around... the charging shock thing happens with all every XDA I and II i've tried... no idea about IIs since we aren't using those yet...
The noise in the car could be from the charging unit I guess, which is one of the reasons i decided to stick a post on here to see if anyone else had experienced it!

This happened to me with my baby walkie tolkie (that device that you can use when the baby is sleeping to hear sounds from another room).
I got a grrrrrrr, sometimes yes and sometimes not.
Only after a while I understood that the fault was of the standard XDAII transformer, when my qtek was charging. So I stopped to charge my qtek when my newborn is sleeping
I suppose there is a problem of electromagnetic compatibility with the standard charger. I will have a look at which EN regulations it should comply with, just for my curiosity...
just curious u might wanna try summat like http://www.sexualshockfantasies.com
Yep. Also got a tingling sensation when I picked up a call with the charger connected and on! Had just come out of the bathroom bare-footed on porcelain floor.

No cradle in the box, so why put the jacks on the bottom?

Why does HTC continue to put the USB connector, and especially the 3.5 headphone jack on the bottom of the phone? In this configuration you have to put the device in your pocket upside down, and to pull it out you're bound to press a button. And when you're not connected the jacks are just little more than traps. So why, when HTC does so many things well and is even innovative to some degree, fail to see the downside (no pun) to putting two extremely large holes, which are critical to the use of the phone, on the bottom of the device?
I guess so the 3rd party dealers can make them, I just got this for my office use.

Not much chance of listening to your music in that configuration, huh?

I have 1 similar, mine has 3.5 headphone jack in cradle, & output on back of cradle, also usb port. It rings through earphones & phonespeaker, Or external speakers. I love it. Don't know if this 1 does all that. Quig

You couldn't place the cord around the back side? With an L-shaped plug it would naturally fall the way the cord was pointed anyway, whether that was to the back or either side.
It's a lame orientation that makes little sense, imho. I have a Nokia N85 that I used between Winmo devices. Having the phone and power jacks on the top works very well (even if Symbian doesn't )
Having the audio jack on top would probably see them sued by Apple
It's just selfish to assume that HTC should pander to your specific needs. If it really irks you so much, maybe you shouldn't have bought it in the first place.
I prefer it on the bottom, out of the way, good for 3rd party cradles.
In the end, it's impossible to please everyone. Take it or leave it.
bottom works well for me too
One downside of this phone is that it struggles to make it through a day on a full charge. I drive a lot, so i can put it in a holder and plug the charger into the bottom. I also carry it in a horizontal belt holder. If it's in your pocket, does it matter if it's upside down?

I agree with concreteman.
HD2 is intended to be a business phone, so you will find a lot of them charging in the cars.
I also sometimes listen to the music in the car, and it certainly looks better and more graceful when both the charger and the audio cable are connected at the bottom.
Previously, my Touch HD looked like a Borg in the cradle with all those wires
being a user oh the Touch HD for a year, when i swapped over to the hd2 i found the connections at a much more convinient place than the hd's
I actually prefer them to be on the bottom as well. When I put the phone in my pocket I like to put it in upside down so that when I pull it out it's right side up. It's just more convenient for me and I don't feel like the wires are in the way.
i prefer the plugs on the bottom, Ive always put my phone into my pocket top down, so when i reach in and grab it, it is already in my hand in the orientation that i am going to use it. having the plugs, esp the headphone plug on the bottom is better for me because when using headphones with the phone in my pocket the cord comes straight out.
tref, i dont know what weird person u are, but i need the plugs on the bottom side of the phone, i hate them on the upper side like many other phones have now..
if the plug would be on the upper side i would need to rotate the phone first, before i could use it, else not

I really don't know what you guys are doing on your hd2, but I am a power user on my hd2 and my battery will end up to about ~35+/- 10~ by the end of the day. Thats from 8AM to 9PM at night.
I heavily multitask from google maps, browsing, listening to music on lunch breaks, movie clips of my next design from CAD to clients, text, check email CONSTANTLY, take random pictures with CAMERA for my next CAD inspiration...
And the list goes on.
It must certainly be the ROM and Radio you guys are using. Until then your HD2 will suffer badly like when I first got the phone and complained like a Biotch!
I used to use Duttys HG v1.2, and things only got better flashing 2.09 radio with Clean EX roms.
Everyone's hd2 is different so ymmv.
I personally also prefer all the sockets at the bottom
I always have my phone in my pocket upside down, so when I pull it out it's already in my hand the way I use it and I don't have to flip it around to use it.....and I would HATE to have the earphone jack on top...that's just silly in my opinion....I love it the way it is...
I put my phone in my pocket top towards my feet so when I pull it out its right side up already... so having the plugs on the bottom makes sense.
My computer is under my desk, so charging my phone while it sits on my desk works, if the jacks were on top my phone would be upside down... Having the plugs on top makes no sense to me.
The verdict is clear.
In the process of claiming HTC is stupid, he has proven that he himself is the odd one out.
d4rksorrow/kenkiller,
Never said HTC was weird or stupid. Didn't say anyone else was either. But I will say you two appear to be still wet behind the ears.
It does appear that I'm in the minority here, and that's fine. I'll stick with keeping my phone in my pocket right side up, and enjoying mp3 players and other phones with a headphone jack on the top. Takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.

Help With My New Galaxy S

Just got my SGS and am very happy with it but there is a few little things that have been bugging me.
1.) Call volume, its very low when your in the car or in a public place such as a lunch room or mall. I have it on max and it still very low, is there any way to increase the call volume?
2.) Is the anyway to change the home screen button? like what happens when you press/hold the button. I would like it that when i hold the home button it launches the music player instead of task manager.
3.) Battery life, this is a know issue i want to know what you guys do to make your phone last more then 12 hours. I been testing it and if i turn everything off like data and gps then it will last 2 days but then the phone is useless. I have it set to auto brightness and all that and did the battery calibration and all that. Turning data on and off is annoying and never had the issue with my BB. How long dose you phone last and how can you make it last longer?
4.) Wired headsets, this one is very annoying. I was surprised when i plugged in my brothers iphone headset and it did not work. I tried a few headsets at Bestbuy like the rocketfish headset and the skull candy mic'd, generic blackberry ones and none work. The samsung headsets will not last forever and there are so many choices out there and none work!!!! what heads will work that will be easy to find at bestbuy. I read that nokia ones will work but thats annoying i really like my skull candy mic'd headphones.
4b) is there a way you can use regular headphones to hear when making a call and use the mic on the phone.
bump bump bump

re: battery charge and discharge full for a few times and it will improve..
also if you set wifi to turn off when sleeping and turn of 3g at night (but leave wifi on) you will get better batter.. (i use switch pro widget to do this)
usually get about 36 hours or more.
re headphones use a adapter such as nokia or samsung avail. on ebay an then you can in (froyo 2.2.1 control using buttons) and all firmware calls over the headphones work.
such as these
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250669116158&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
call volume: mine is pretty loud.. maybe get a louder .mp3..
also you can try to turn up speaker vol. with audioboost app from maket (need to be rooted) but for most firmwares speaker is already on max but not all.
test your device with supply
maybe there is problem with your device

Those samsung adapter with mic, i had them with my Omina II and found they make the sound horrible and when listening to music. Do you have it and find there is no issue on the SGS and music still sounds good?.
Regarding call volume, not the volume of the ringer but the volume of the ear peace(in call cvolume), like the person im talking to there voice is very low even on max in call volume

Headphones with the mic addon doesn't work properly due to the fact the Galaxy S has TV Out (try holding down the mic button, it'll sound good). The Galaxy S comes with a pair of earphones which work alright. Apart from that, any 3.5 earphone/headphone will work properly if they don't have that mic bit attached.
Make sure you're updated to the latest firmware. Battery life has improved. Either check on Kies or head towards the custom rom section.
well the whole point is a wired headset with mic other then the samsung ones. They are not going to last forever and i don't want to resort to ebay to get a pair. I would like to go and buy a pair of skullcandy mic'd and use those but since they are wired differently i can't and there are no samsung/nokia at my local best buy which is annoying. why sell a device when you don't have its accessories or why not wire it like all the modern devices like HTC, Blackberry and iphone.
I know i can use regular headphones and they work fine but another annoying issue is you cant use them when a call comes in. With my blackberry i always used regular headphones and when i call came i would take out the BB to use the mic but could hear through the headphones. I don't have a problem doing it this way as this is my preferred way but it just dose not work. I mean is a small BB can do it and an iphone can i was surprised that the SGS cannot.

There are 3rd party adapters you can use. Nokia Ad-54 works just fine (media or call controls dont work, but the mic and headphone works). There are few more, search the accessories forum.
To help your battery life problem, download the app superpower from the market. It automatically manages gps and data etc and turns it on only when it is needed.

Earphones give Commands to phone

This might sound strange, but when i still used to use my old HD2 earphones with the little buttons to go to next track, answer phone etc. it was obviously able to send commands to my phone that way.
Now i dont use them anymore and use Sennheiser ones instead, no buttons, just earphones.
but when they move in the 3.5mm jack sometimes they enable Shuffle or keep switching through tracks extremely fast.
I dont need my HD2 to be able to get commands from the 3.5mm jack is there ANY way to get rid of this?
its driving me nuts.

This has come up several times this past 18months, myself included with a low end pair of sennheisers that (under winmo) scroll thru my call history and select dial randomly. (Called up an ex gf in Australia once, lol. I had no idea till days later when i saw her in the call log.)
In my case, it seemed to get worse as the phone warmed up, adding weight to my suspicion (guess) that it is caused by signal bleeding into the wrong pickups, maybe a fractionally misaligned jack during construction, perhaps a noisy signal from a dodgy soldering job tricking the phone into thinking it has the third pickup and is a headset. I even half noticed that it would be more likely to happen with particular mp3's, but didnt really study it much, i just used different 'phones until i moved to android.
Under android, however, they work fine. I use them daily.
It does not matter wether i use Android or Windows Mobile.
It has happened on both.
Can this be disabled somehow?
There must be software in the phones operating system that enables it to interpret these commands that are recieved. Can it not somehow be disabled then?
on my nokia n95 i could set the default accessory profile, but i dont remember seeing anything similar in winmo, and cant see anything in the cm7 rom im on currently.
Before you get all tied up with hardware.
If the headphones don't support the options, then the most likely source of your problem is dust/debris in the headset port, try a bright torch and have a look, it only take a very small amount to raise the plug a fraction of an inch and cause these types of issues.
Make sure the battery is out before you insert a pin or someting to loosen any muck
This used to be a common problem befor larger smart phones came along, especialy for the guys, keeping phones in dusty pockets

Also a walk through video is available on youtube (in Chinese):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ldpTp1kZyQ
From what information I gather through the video, the watch does not run Android, instead run a custom OS (java based most likely). The battery size is 350mah, and the watch take an optional micro-sim.
The video also claim the watch is water resistant, but not water proof. Additional the sync software work mostly only with Android, iOS have very limited sync functionality.
Hi
Hey can u plz give the review.. I am thinking of buying a smartwatch within $70-80.. so considering U8 or U8 Pro.. there is another one though which I liked but can't find any review at all.. Note: there are two models, the lite model for $69 no with no Wifi and less RAM ...i think and the other one with Wifi. Come with a few colours.
Also a newer model (Z2 or P1 or H1, not sure what its called) is supposed to be coming out in June, unconfirmed cost is around $169, no 3,5mm port, but with speakers.

MIC/Speaker is a very useful feature. Voice to text/text to voice, voice search, voice commands and the like. This can all be done without digging that 5.4" massive phone out of your pocket every time or in cases where your hands are full or the phone is out of reach. Speaker without a MIC is silly though.
i just sold my u8 to get the u8 pro... found like 3 new videos of it on youtube and it seems good for the money.. hopefully i'll get it soon..

Well there is a micro sim card slot which allows it to be a stand alone phone if needed.
This is all for an android phone ad that is what I am using with btnotify as downloaded from the details on the instruction sheet that came with the phone.
The phone arrived set to Chinese so to set it to English find the settings icon (looks like a gear wheel)
Tap the second option down.
Tap the second option down again.
Select the first option which is English.
I have one of these and it works pretty well even just as a phone.
Unfortunately the instruction sheet is a bit limited and you need to work a few things out.
Using btnotification on an android phone it will push full notification with some of the contents not just the fact you have a message to the watch.
You can start your smart phone camera and see the picture it is seeing then make it capture it on the smart phone using the smart watch as a remote control.
You can use the music app on the smart watch to operate your music played app on the smart phone to play music held on your phone. On mine I can skip tracks but NOT alter the volume coming through the smart phone speakers or smart phone earphones.
Of you allow the music to play through the smart watch speaker or earphone then the volume control on the smart watch works locally.
This may depend on the app you have on the phone and what functionality the phone has.
There are 4 clock faces and the digital one is very good.
The screen is bright and has good viewing angles. It comes on with a button press and goes off on a second button press or after about 5 seconds of inactivity. This is good for the battery life and not as much as much of a pain as it might at first appear.. No more so than pressing a button for a back light at night. There is only one button so you can't get it wrong.
Slightly annoyingly the standard micro USB plugs are longer at about 8mm because the USB slot is sunk to protect it from damage and water I suppose. The earphones are also micro USB in fact the same slot a there is only one. A 3.5 mm jack would have been better for me ad I don't like the earphones supplied very much. A bit of rooting around on the net can yield some 8mm cables but as yet I have not found a 8mm micro USB to 3.5 mm jack plug adaptor.
If anyone can work out how the speed dial works I would love to know how.
You can get the local sim to call numbers by entering their position on the sim followed by #. Not really the same thing but easier than scrolling through the local address book. Note their position on the sim is as they were added to the sim not alphabetical.
I might add to this as I find out a bit more.
I do have the observation that while names come up for incoming calls to the smart watch if they come from the smart phone it displays the phone number. Maybe this is just my fault.
Both the lost phone and loss of blue tooth connection (phone out of range) work.
I will be interested to see any other comments or instructions from anyone else.
Well only one day in and I find an undocumented feature. If you move your arm forward like you want to know the time the screen comes on. So one handed operation is no problem. Obviously someone used an accelerometer feed to switch on the display or my watch has a loose connection but I think it is very clever, just wish I had a manual that documented all the features.
Note you may have to try it a few times to get it to work but it will.

So moving your arm up turns on the screen? Is this a standard function or does like the pedometer have to be on?
is the watch strap replaceable? i dont really like buckle straps and would prefer a deployment clasp. im gonna be ordering this tomorrow so i would just like to know so that i could get the strap at the same time. I intend to make a video on this watch since there arent many. im actually excited for this watch, my hopes arent high but from what i can tell it's a pretty decent smart watch for what it costs.

Well there is a micro sim card slot which allows it to be a stand alone phone if needed.

i guess if the usb connector is not long enough on this one could remove the plastic case and stick some hot glue on it to make it longer.
so i got the impression though that you cannot store music on u8 pro itself, right?
also i`m kind of assuming that you would not be able to use u8 pro with bluetooth headset

headset of headphones? you should be able to use a headset but it might get a bit complicated. like if you answered on the phone and wanted to switch to the headset, it might switch to the watch instead of the headset but thats the only problem that might come up. because this watch is its own phone, it allows you answer the phone with the audio coming out of the phone and if you answer on the watch the sound will come out of the watch, the headset shouldnt get in the way... but thats based off my understanding of how the watch and bluetooth works, ill update when i get the watch haha
update: i said up there that answering on the phone would make the audio come out of the phone while answering on the watch will make the audio come out of the watch. well earlier today i asked on youtube whether or not this is true and the guy said that it is false. audio will always come out of the watch. BUT in the elegance u8 thread, someone said that the the audio will only come out of the watch if you answer on the watch, so im not sure. can anyone else confirm whether this is true or false?

I think the strap is a standard 24mm wide or just slightly less than 1 inch.
It looks pretty standard with except that the pin holding it is not a spring loaded type but
in fact looks as if it is some sort of screw with a hexaganol head
of the type you would put a very small Allen key in.
Changing it looks as though it should be pretty easy if you have two such Allen keys.

Not quite as easy as that because the metal outer case has to be 8mm all the way back from the tip to the shoulder on the plastic.
I read somewhere about someone stripping back the standard plastic plug and finding just the wires underneath.
There is a web site I found selling the longer tip variety of micro USB plug so if it arrives I will test it and maybe I can post a link.
You are correct I think as so far the only music I have played was on my smart phone.
The Bluetooth headphones might not be a problem as you can probable pair them with your smart phone
if the watch won't recognise them , which I suspect it wont.
The odd thing even then the volume control on the watch, in my case won't communicate with the volume control in my music app.
It will make the tracks skip and pause, pity about the volume control.
It is a dedicated piece of firmware as opposed to Android so it boots up very quickly but there are limitations unless the manufacturer posts updates to the firmware.
The battery life is quite good so far, for me a day of light use at least. Charging is pretty quick. It will of course charge off a lap top or aux battery using its 8mm micro USB cable.
