Adblocker or other useful tweaks/apps for root? - Moto G4 Questions & Answers

I've just finished rooting my G4 and I was wondering what adblockers there are and whether there are some more apps or tweaks I could take advantage of using my root.

Root Explorer (paid playstore version) (free version is for un-rooted phones)
Titanium Backup - Root (paid playstore version is 10 times faster + more features)
There are other similar free apps which can do the same things but no where near as good and user friendly.
Good luck!

How to remove Samsung Bloatware?

Hello all!
I have a Galaxy Note 4 910C(exynos), rooted and using DN5, and I always see people talking about bloatware that comes pre installed and are useless.
I'm wondering what are acutally those and how do I remove them?
Thx in advance!
since you'r rooted, use titanium backup. You can try the app called Greenify or simply disable those apps your app manager.

For a rooted device, KNOX related apps are bloatwares since rooted KNOX disabled & can't be used on a rooted device.
The other bloatware is user preference.
Which app that you don't use is a bloatware

That's exactly what I mean, any apps that you don't need.
You can even remove phone (if you never use your Note 4 for a phone call ) & Touchwiz.
Rule of thumb, if you never heard of it & it's not inside the App Drawer, don't delete it
NOTE: TouchWiz is not in the app drawer
I do it in a simpler way. First I clear the data from settings and then using root explorer I go to system/app folder and I directly delete preinstalled apps that I never use for example- samsung push service, mobile print, chat on, hangouts, google books, yahoo weather, etc. Theres another folder called system/priv-app
WARNING: Don't delete apps you have absolutely no idea about. It can cause your phone's OS to malfunction.

This. I don't have a note 4 (yet). but I learned it the hard way on my nexus 4. thank god for TWRP and its file manager.
Usually what i do is backup the app before i uninstall it to see if i notice any system instability caused by uninstalling it.

What are you all doing after root?

Was hoping to learn what folks are using root for. I am using substratum but would love to have an advanced power menu but wasn't sure where to look. Would also love some ideas of what others are using root for, for ideas. Thanks!

Doesn't look like viper works for oreo either? So what yall do on oreo after rooting?
Tasker, adaway, root Explorer and deleting unnecessary apps?
There are a lot of needs...
And viper4android. But unfortunately I didn't install it (I'm used to use the Magisk module)
Anybody is running viper?
What are folks using for advanced power menu on oreo?
I was rooted on 7.1.1 for Substratum. I am on 8.0 and unrooted since Substratum works without root on Oreo.
Oreo, rooted.
•Magisk + testing Magisk modules that might work with Oreo
•RootExplorer
•Android pay
•Titainium Backup
•Light Flow + Light Flow legacy
•Substratum (legacy)
•Kernel Auditor
•Waiting on a working TWRP doesn't absolutely need root, but an unlocked bootloader, custom recovery and root seems to go together.
And whatever else fun I find to mess around with.
Root is a must for me. I like the full control of the device I own. And again, it's fun!

Yeah... I was going to say. Why root at this point? The only thing I can think of is doing a Titanium Backup so I can backup the apps WITH the data. I don't know of any app that can backup the apps with data of an unrooted phone, do you? Other than that... I dunno. What you think?

I don't want a phone that the vendor or carrier control.
I own it and I scold be able to do what I want.
The only thing on a phone that should ever be locked it the radio partition so they can control how the device accesses the network.
Other than that, leave my phone alone.
Greenify's best battery-saving features require both root and Xposed.
I also really like the GMS Doze Magisk module for battery savings.
And I never want to do without the ability to use EX Kernel Manager or Kernel Adiutor to squeeze some more battery and performance out of my device via scheduler and governor options. Some of the options for this phone (hexacore mode, adaptive low-memory killer) are pretty intriguing and can't be edited otherwise.

Your philosophy is flawed...
Xposed just being installed is an enormous battery drain in it's current incarnation...
You're better off without Xposed if you're looking for battery

A question

My last phone was a Titan or Moto G2 XT1068. In that, I rooted the stock ROM and tried uninstalling gapps but it went into bootloop. Only if I installed a third party launcher, uninstall gapps except Google, and then after a successful reboot I uninstall Google, it used to work. But mostly, the home screen never showed after uninstalling Google.
My question to you guys is
How can you get rid of gapps from Athene running latest stock rom? I tried System App Remover, but it kept failing. I rooted my phone with phh's superuser.
Pls help
Have you tried this debloater script in the Mods section? https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/themes/stock-rom-debloater-t3729594
As always, back up your device before using.

AFAIK stock ROM comes with Google Now Launcher, and removing Google app with cause force close to Now Launcher, (may be because of Google widget or side screen??)
You can remove google app from /system/priv-app or /system/apps (don't know exact place and folder name.)
Also remove google now launcher and install other launcher or use flashable launcher installer zip (like trebuchet or others) available on other XDA forums..
After it, wipe delvik and cache from TWRP, also take backup before proceeding to remove anything..

You cannot use Google keyword search and other things that you might want to use from Google. So easy way: freeze it, test everything, then decide if it should be deleted or not.

Depends what you mean with function properly... For example: Google play store is also a Google app. You need a third party app store like F-Droid or install every app separate per apk file.
Living without Google is possible, but you should decide. There's no yes or no in terms of recommendations. Only minor apps are outside the Google play store available.

Is the Convert User app to System app part of Titanium Backup Pro, or is it in the free version too? I'm not sure how up to date this page is, which suggests this feature is only in the premium paid version: https://www.titaniumtrack.com/titanium-backup.html

As per my title, I would like to know what other users use for blocking ads.

Will try that. I think what happened is that too many entries is on the hosts file. I am trying to use the masterlist from a thread here. I want to restore hosts file but ES file and root explorer can't delete or rename it
non-rooted using blockada with energized and steve black host scripts and adguard dns selected works just fine for me,However this non root thing is a bit new to me,I usually have always unlocked and rooted all previous devices prior to the 6T,but I don't see a reason to do so on the 6t so far.it is quick and great battery life etc..well with exception of missing TB and I more used to adaway.

I use AdGuard. Works great, full blocking with or without Root.

Non-rooted, using Torguard paid VPN with their ad blocking DNS set within the settings. Works very well. I was a compulsive rooter and was using AdAway butt this works fine and no root needed.
Firefox with uBlock origin, simple and effective, no root necessary
Energized basic list, no issue so far
Adguard. Just got a lifetime license for eight bucks for their holiday sale. Once you've got it set up, forget it. Works better than any other method I've used, because unlike adaway and others, adguard actually blocks elements in pages so you can't even tell there's an ad that's supposed to be there. You can export/import your settings if you reset or change phones. It has per-app settings, too. There's a reason it isn't free but it's worth every penny imo.
Is that holiday sale still going on? I need to find that link and get that
