Do I really need a screen protector? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I recently wasted about 20$ on screen protectors. First was coming off the edge because the adhesive was poor thus I had problems with my screen responsivity in some areas. Second had better adhesive, although it wasn't case friendly, and was coliding with my thing case that was just pushing it a little bit from left and right. Similiar touch problems occured. Now I am not sure if I should hunt for some curved glass again or give up for now. All of them are crappy becausw adhesive doesn't cover all the glass panel, only the edges top and bottom. I have to admit that I take care of my phone, never put it with my keys in pocket, will Gorilla Glass 5 be enough?

Waste of money IMO. Get a good balanced case and use that beautiful screen in all its glory.

First phone I'm not using a screen protector and I have to say, it's so liberating LOL!

This screen is easily scratched and easily broken. I my self use the cheap screen protectors and the loca glue. The gorrilla glass 5 is softer than 4 supposedly for better impact resistance which I find to be crap. So with the softer glass it's easier to scratch as well which in the end can compromise the integrity of the glass. Imo I wouldn't skip a temp glass

Completely Naked?

Is anyone using this phone completely naked? No case, no screen protector, no back protection? I asked this another way a little earlier; only one response. Very curious. I'm looking at the Z5 Compact and the Samsung S6 Edge. I prefer the specs and size of the Z5, but I know 2 people who use their Edge without any protection. After several months, they still look good.
All opinions appreciated.
Thanks.
Not very old but I use mine with a tempered glass screen protector that you'd never know was there anyhow... Phone doesn't have a mark or look worn
Any protection on the back?
Nothing on the back, it's not glass like the Z3 Compact...

Well, it is glass at the back, it's just frosted.
I have screen protectors both sides. Usually backside gets more hits
I just put a tempered glass screen protector on mine and am debating getting a $3 aluminum bumper from eBay until the Devilcase is released. I like the look of the phone naked and have had it that way for a few weeks, but I already have a few tiny nicks on the poly carbonate ridge along the backside. They're hardly noticeable, but the phone hasn't taken any hard drops. I'm thinking the PC won't hold up long term without getting damaged.
I've been using the phone without case since one day.
I'm just worried about the camera glass. I'd put a ring a bumpon or something to lift up that area a bit.

Doesn't feel like the glass backing of the zc compact to me, it doesn't slide off the sofa either
Completely naked here. I am worried of dropping the phone, cause its damn slippery...
By the power of Sony Xperia Z5 Compact
i never used any kind of protection for any phone i owned.
why should i make it ugly to save it from getting ugly by time?

Does not change the fact that it still is glass at the back.
If you do not believe us google some reviews.

I'm not saying I disbelieve you am I? Just saying it doesn't feel like it does on a Z3
It's kind of matt glass. Very good for me, no visible finger prints
Running mine naked but have only had it for a day. It's the smallest phone I've used in awhile and I've almost dropped it a bunch of times. I have a tpu case coming today to help with the grip.

Completely naked. Have a little scratch on the back, looks like a discolouration. I will get tempered glass for both sides if I can find it in a store where they can also attach them for me.

I've only owned two smart phones in my life. The very first one, I got a silicone case and a SGP (plastic) screen protector. I've scratched the screen protector maybe twice, not sure if it would have scratched glass. I owned it for 2 years
For my second phone, I saw some videos about how silicon cases and bumpers don't really protect against drops because of how thin they are. I decided I didn't need the case but still got the protector since it has no affect on clarity, feel, thickness. I've had it for three years. Scratched the screen protector three times. I don't know how it happened but I did get a tiny crack in the bezel. Since it's black its barely noticeable.
I've dropped my phone plenty of times. Usually not from far, like 2-3ft onto carpet.
I just ordered the Z5 Compact. I decided to try the tempered glass protector. And I also ordered the Orzly Fusion bumper case. I figure the hard back might actually protect something. I figure the slippery body and sharp corners make it more susceptible to damage. Also, I'm paying full price for this phone so I'm more inclined to protect it.
I read about people that use their phones naked all the time. Maybe it really isn't needed but I don't want to take the chance with my own phone.
One other alternative I can think of is to buy insurance for your phone. Something with a low deductible.

How weak is the back panel of yhe z5

We will have small accidents for sure and this issue the remaining gripe before buying this phone. Any thoughts or experiences?

I use tempered glass front and back protectors, from devilcase.
Together with the grey devilcase aluminum bumper which is rock-solid.
The tempered glass protectors won't scratch as fast as foils; i use them for almost a year now and no single scratch even when looking thru a magnifier.
The aluminum bumper will prevent bending in pocket when something heavy lands on my phone in my pocket.
They are quite expensive (for a case) but in my opinion definitely worth it.
Google it, devilcase

Did all your devices, with or without any cases, survive drops?
i have dropped my z5 a load of times by this point and i have yet to notice any damage on anywhere but the metal band around the edge of the device
also i use my phone without a case so i have to say the z5 is way more stronger than my z2
Mine fell 2 times on my hardwood floor from 1-1.5 m, not even a scratch. Then I bought and used this spigen hybrid case, never dropped since.
alrightie. I might get this phone over the XPerformance before the end of the month. Cheers!

hi fellow pinoy hehe
yeah get the z5, i have it for 3 months already and dropped it several times and thankfully no scratches or whatever. It looks so nice I sometimes just look at it and hold it for a whole minute haha
I use a case though, just in case (pun heavily intended hahaha)
I wish I had the same experiences everyone else here did. The day after I got my z5, my phone slid off a very very slightly tilted work surface (the back of the phone is extremely slippery) and it fell about 3 feet onto a linoleum flooring. The back is now all cracked. Found out afterwards that lots of people recommend tempered glass front and back for the z5. I have them on now haha
I think back panel is not that much weak the problem is camera lens side of back panel. it straches very easily as Sony used very poor material at this part

indeed, it's stupid considering that plastic scratches that easily and is that vulnerable ( /me squinting at the LG V30 with its reinforced glass lens)

P9 Lite uneven screen with a tempered glass protector

Hi all, any one here having an issue with their tempered glass protector not fully adhering to their device?.. This https://youtu.be/iYmX8hXtXNI is what is happening to mine with a tempered glass protector on it... This is not a one off as I've put two different glass protectors on my device and they both do the same!.. Do you think I can send this back to either manufacturer/retailer for a replacement?..
Thanks for taking and replying ?

I had a similar problem several times in a few minutes I held squeezed with fingers on the screen and I think that helped. So far it is OK sometimes diverges but after 1-2 minutes holding is again stuck, we'll see how long
Afaik this is a common issue that is due to the fact that the edges of the screen are slightly rounded. Because of that, air gets between protector and screen.
Your best bet is to try another protector that is slightly smaller than the screen. Most P9 Lite protectors are designed so they do not cover 100% of the front because of this.

Yes but that is just a simple foil. Not comparable with the protection that a good tempered glass provides.
The factory foil is doing well for me, but it is slowly getting some air bubbles on the sides after 5 months of use.
Would a foil hold better than glass on this device?

The problem isn't the screen per see, it's the screws that hold everything in place.
If you remove the back cover and slightly unscrew the 2 screws by the usb port (or other parts like the top) you will make the screen flat and the protector will fit just fine.
I've done that to my phone and the tempered glass protector fits perfectly now.

Just unscrewed 2 screws near USB port, and screen protector is 100% flat. No bubbles at all.

The only thing that needs attention is the nfc antenna, you need to be careful with it. Sometimes it stays stuck to the battery other times it gets stuck in the plastic housing and it is easy to tear it.
Another side effect of this "mod" is that the glass is under less stress and is less prone to cracking on drops.

Xiaomi Mi A2 scratch very easily

I was surprised to see the screen seemingly scratch so easily. I have 2 weeks since I bought the phone and already has scratches on screen. I put it in the casing without harsh objects in my pocket. Feel pretty daft, as I really liked this phone, and I normally take real care, but that included case was much sleeker and comfortable to use than the chunky one. Feels like I have permanently damaged it (scratch won't 'wipe off', and can physically feel ithe groove of the scratch). If someone with Xiaomi Mi A2 has the same problem, please share here.
mine-s fine for now (used it for 3 weeks) you live near a beach? sand is the worse enemy of screens...
L.E. maybe add a screen protector anyway, you wont feel the scratch any more. (and probly not notice it either)

The Mi A2 has gorilla glass 5, so keys or steel objects cannot scratch it. Things like granite countertops, diamonds, or sand can easily cause scratches. Theoretically the glass is just as scratch resistant as most flagships. I made sure I was getting some form of gorilla glass in my phone because many times I keep it in my pocket with my keys (just not thinking about which pocket has what in it). I haven't had a scratch on it yet.
I used mine around 3 wks and no scratch so far without screen protector. I normally put my phone in my pants pocket. Maybe you can check where you put your phone whether there's any sand or something hard that might scratch the phone screen

I haven't. I am waiting for my glass screen protector to get in anyways though. I recommend a glass one. They don't scratch easily and are really cheap. If you are concerned about scratches you should probably buy one. I got a 3 pack for 4$ on gearbest
using it for 2 weeks now. .screen looks fine no scratch so far but i'm thinking putting a screen protector just to be a safe
I can confirm that micro scratches happen very quickly, had 2 after 3 days of careful use. Very much doubt this is gorilla glas.

According to this and other threads it's the oleophobic coating of GG5 which scratches easily:
https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/micro-scratches-on-corning-gorilla-5.742823/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4Wtm3h4LdE
the redmi note 5 pro and the mi a2 have the exact same screen/front
like several phones... for me :
- screen protector and
- flip cover
Guys, please stop rage on this phone.
Oneplus 6 i had also scratches on the phone without a screen protector on my mi 8 to.
It is because gorilla glas 5 is softer than gorilla glas 3.

I read it's just the coating which keeps away the fingerprints that scratches easily on GG5

Nobody here is raging, just letting people know and yes, I've noticed the same on my phone as well, but I'm waiting for my screen protector to arrive anyway, so the scratches will be filled by the adhesive.

Back camera protector film

Have anybody tried these back camera film protectors? I dont know how, but My note 10+ got a tiny scratch near the center camera, even though that I put an aluminum protective ring to exactly avoid this, after this scratch happened, I am afraid it will happen again, but also I think that the quality of the pictures may be impacted, any one has tried them?
Leave it. Protective film can make photos worse. For me it's better to fix little scratches in PS than have problems with light, colors etc.

I don't have anything other than a wrap on my camera. There's nothing on the lense directly above the camera sensor, but it keeps things from touching it as easily/often . Most wraps include a piece for the camera as well as the phone, I've put wraps on my last few phones, and haven't had an issue with any of the cameras. Slickwraps and Dbrand both have quality wraps. I have Slickwraps on my Note 8 and 10+. After 2+ years of being on my Note 8, the camera wrap came off a month ago only because it was peeled off in one of my bags while traveling.
That honeycomb pattern looks nice!
I know this is an old thread, but I thought people might wanna learn a few things about these camera protectors. I got one made of glass. I applied it pretty easily, though I needed to make some postapplying adjustments. I don't see any impact upon pictures, during the day or taken at night with the LED on.
There is no way you can remove scratches from the camera glass as any attempt to polish it will have negative impact upon camera performance.

Oh my...
Not needed and it will degrade the image (refraction is one way). Adding uncoated optics is a big no-no especially.
It's not glass*, it a polycarbonate I believe and not the camera lense; it's a protective cover for the camera assembly below it.
The rear cover factory protector is cheap and easy to replace after you remove the rear cover.
A Zizo Bolt case gives good raised guards to protect it.
Keep your fingers off it and clean with a microfiber cloth as needed. Use a blower bulb first to clear loose sand if present.
I live in the desert, very windy with lots of sand and grit. After over a year and a half my 10+'s rear cam factory protector has no mars or scratches.
*you can polish mars and very slight scratches out of glass optics with a dry finger or palm.
Takes about 30 minutes or more. Any type of glass polishing more aggressive than this would likely deform it to the point of noticeably altering its optical qualities.
