Hey,
The 16GB Sandisk card that came with my HD2 is only letting me utilise 14GB of the space. Does anyone know how I can gain access to the full 16GB.
Thanks.

That is normal from what I have seen. The space is being used by the info the card needs to run. I have 3 16gb cards and after a fresh format I have 14.9gb left on both the class 2 and the class 6

you are seeing 14.8 gb on windows right?
That is correct for a 16gb card
Cards are sold by the bits, but when you format the card that is converted to GB and displayed by windows.
for instance since a kbyte 1024 bits
your 16gb card is actually 15,927,345,152 bits divide that by 1024 , but because of the way it is calculated, you have to divide the result again by 1024 and then once more. You will end up with 14.83349609375 which is how windows sees the GB
hope that answers your question ....
EDIT:
Just for reference why you have to divide it 3 times
The first time will give Kbits
Second time will Megabits
Third time will give you Gigabits
Alright awesome thanks so much guys.

No problem, it is just a marketing thing, has annoyed me for years ...
Just so they can say it is 16 gig ...
Well, I've been saving up for a new phone for ages and the Nexus 4 seems to be the best choice.
I don't have that much money for the 16GB.
If I buy the 8GB how much space will I "Really" have to use.
Some people are telling me I will have a FULL 8GB free to my self, others are telling me the OS takes up some space by default and I'll have like 2GB free for my self.
Can someone please tell me the truth.
You will have 6.9 -ish GB of memory.
Don't kill me if that's wrong, but no one knows the exact space, but surely you won't get fully 8GB
Your NOT going to get the full 8GB. No doubt about it.

I have a 64GB Class 10 Micro SD card +16GB that is in my phone. And I only have 28GB or so left.
Well I hope we have more than 6GB of space because I like to keep my music on my phone.
5.42gb free on 8gb model. Lower than I had hoped, probably going 16gb now.

I think 2 gb will be reserved for App and 6 gb will be available for use. .
I heard about 5.5GB (if you search some reviews I believe there are some screenshots of the storage screen), can anyone else chime in. Will the full 8GB all be the same speed? Any idea how it will be partitioned? My One X has about 2GB for the system/firmware, about 5GB classed as internal storage and then about 9GB classed mSD card, so I don't know if it is one 16GB 'chip array' running at the same speed.
It's too bad the phone is already so long. It'd have been nice to make / buy a case that had a built in battery and more storage via usbotg. Hell, it still might be a decent idea. I can't live with one battery.. 8gb I can probably manage.
8 gigs is really not bad. I will use my phone for calls, text, pics so on so on. My N7 with 8 GB is my PlayStation has all my games, Google drive will help me upload all my photos. Its really not bad once you put things away
#Galaxy Nexus HSPA+
On the Nexus 7 8gb it is 5.92gb free after mandatory system files. Thats with Jellybean 4.1 though, 4.2 might be a little bigger (or smaller).
I would expect around 5.5gbs of space left on a stock phone.
Afaik, with this nexus, there are no partitions. So the 5.5gb you get is not restricted to 2gb for data, 4gb for music etc.
At least there's one positive. Although, I also think that 5.5gb out of 8gb is on the low side.

Honestly, for $50 more, just the get the 16GB. Whats $50 when your already spending $300?
I wonder if there is an error here, because I was expecting a 16Gb device but what I got has only 8Gb? Where did the other 8Gb go? :crying:
Well...Just contact service support of samsung
Its gone no where, samsung has filled it with their own flavor known as bloat.

the internal memory is also used for all the apps that come pre-installed, not to mention the OS as well. its 16gb on the phone, but a lot of it is used up already thanks to Samsung and T-Mobile

Maybe but I came from S3, but isn't 8Gb too much for just bloatware? On my previous S3, the total available internal memory was 11.25gb. I would understand the 4.75Gb reduction because of the OS (I already have removed some bloatware) But 8Gb?
Why manufacturers even makes phones these days with 16gb internal memory is beyond me.
Some games these days are 4gb each! that gives you enough space for 2 top of the line games on your phone, ridiculous!
I can understand back in the day of the Galaxy S and S2 having 16gb but not these days. Also Samsung really shouldn't claim 16gb when half of it used up already!! It's very misleading. We do not have 16gb available at all.
It was understandable when the OS and system apps only used to take up around 2gb, but saying the device has 16gb storage when 8gb is already taken doesn't seem right to me.

It's not an "issue" as such, it's just the way it is.

Lol, ehat if I tell you that my xperia arc has only 420 mb of internal storage, the os takes 200 mb, but I have 359 mb FREE, I don't know how
Samsung should be reported to trading standards. It's clearly not got 16gb free for the user nor is there any warning that half is already used.

well true, but it has always been this way. not sure of any phone with internal memory that wasn't partially used by the phones OS, even non-android phones are like this, even iOS
Same issue with windows and Mac computers lol. But yes, I agree that 32 Gb should be new min standard because of app size increases as the years go by.

Partially used is ok. Not 50% used. Big difference. And there needs to be a warning apps/games cannot be saved on the sd card - forget tweaks that's for tech geeks not the average person.

Well they neber stated 16gbs free or 16gb useable...so what woupd report them for? You expecting more?
Every device is like this...some more than others. But even blank hardrives/flash drives don't have as much as they claim...buy a terabyte blank hard drive and your actually only getting 9XXgb hard drive
And you cant really base it off the s3 as every year the system partition gets larger taking up more space...due to more features/bloat being added. The worst part is not even debloating will increase your free memory as the whole system partition needs to be changed if you want more user space
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
So now we are justifying why it is ok for companies to do this? surely not. So if the S5 is 16gb with 4gb free that will be ok then?
no, its not ok, but you can try emailing samsung instead of beating a dead horse here
but here's the thing. hard drive manufacturers have been doing this for decades. when they say 16gb they dont mean gigabyte, they mean 16 billion bytes. there is a difference.
hard drive makers use base 10 in computing hard drive sizes, so when you see 16gb it really means 16 billion bytes which is less than what you think you are getting. those who understand binary know the difference. in base 2, if i say kilobyte, that means 1024 bytes, but on a hard drive, it means 1000 bytes. see the difference?
on my wife's Tmo S4 she has 9.62gb free from her 16gb internal memory, a lot yes, but not half
I have been in touch with Samsung. They blame Google. I've responded and awaiting a further response.
The available memory varies dependant on carrier. 9.62gb is the UK average I believe.
The other issue is Samsung doesn't sell the phone. It gets orders from carriers and wholesalers. The carriers and wholesalers all chose 16gb since they all thought the memory was expandable with sd card along with apps and games being able to be saved on the sd card.
Maybe a few months down the line we will see 32gb versions being available. I am hopeful.
Hello,
I'm ordering an SD card 64g series 10 right now. However, has anybody got other practical tips to survive only having the 16gb?

well, you can now move apps to the external SD. That should help. Data will probably remain internal, and if any apps have widgets, they will only work if in the fully internal ram anyway.

I guess I'm a bad manager of space at the moment and will need to improve. My S3 currently has 29GB total space and only 5 and a bit GB Available. Apps 1.9gb, pictures and vids 500mb, downloads 2.5mb, Misc files 3.8gb. I'm using a series 4, 32 GB chip. So I expect that I'll pack the new 64 gb with my pictures a lot of the apps, downloads and (not really sure what I have at 3.8gb ... DAta or ROMS?) Misc files, I should be able to still enjoy the experience, right?
If the Note 3 lags when saving things on Ext SD or if it is not even an option, I'll be a bit miffed. But it would probably serve me right, for being impatient and not waiting till 32GB N9005's reached Mainland China.
I'm using HK N9005 with 16gb (a little sad)
I relief this problem by buying 32gb of external sd
and root the device for mounting internal storage to SD card.
This is no problem
If it saved me 100 bucks, I'd go for it.
I'd do things no different than I do now, on a 16GB S3. All media (films, music, photo's, videos) on a MicroSD, and keep the internal memory for Apps only. Navigation maps and other such massive files also go on the SD.
I have a 32GB MicroSD that's almost full (1.2GB remaining), and internal memory has 8GB free. 202 apps installed. (Downloaded only, not counting stock, that's a total of somewhere in 290, last I saw during OTA.)
I'd live with it just fine, I think.

So I switched over to Boost Mobile in order to get my hands on this phone. I really like it but my version only has 4GB of ROM, so after the OS and bloatware I'm left with less than 3GB of usable storage. I contacted Boost about this and they said that they only sell the 4GB version. I haven't seen anybody else really mention this problem so I'd like to see if anybody here can let me know how much available space they have on their phone that they ordered from Boost Mobile's web site. Thanks!

With all the apps I have installed (1.2GB) I have 2.8GB free, so 4 GB useable seems to be what I have on my Boost model I also purchased online. I don't remember the exact amount after first boot, but it was about a couple hundred MB used already.
Maybe doing a factory reset can fix it?
bought mine at bestbuy on boost network and in storage mine says 4GB total also.

That's why everyones wanting an unlocked bootloader or root, to get rid of all the crap on internal and make full use of the 128gb external for apps and not just media. Once this phone gets a break on either of those this phone would be a powerhouse for media, till then were stuck patiently waiting.
