So, for my sake, and others considering to take the plunge, what are some real benefits of rooting? I have had my nexi for 6 days now and I need a real good reason to root, because as we all know, it voids the warranty. Agree?

Custom ROMs, certain apps that require root/su access, and custom themes. Whether those are real good reasons or not is up to you.
just a quick question, ive read the tut on rooting the nexus, what i do not understand is can u only do the root and not the rest of it, as it says to install this image then recovery, as i do not want to put custom roms on, is this possible,

Alright so another question for you my good man, how easy is it to achieve root? Because I literally had the hardest time on my magic. It got me so heated that I never tried again. And now in the tutorial for rooting it makes it sound amazingly easy.

unlocking the bootloader does NOT give you root, it simply ALLOWS you to root. Root access is part of a custom ROM (a modified kernel I beleive). You can leave the stock ROM on and just install the superboot image on top of it to get root access (see modaco's thread in development section).

The easiest way would be to unlock the boot loader, then flash Armon's recovery, then flash Modaco's rooted stock ROM(he made a rooted version of the stock updated ROM, no changes other than the root).
It should take about 10 minutes total if you are experienced and bang it out... being new, probably take about 20-30 minutes since I am sure you will be double checking along the way.
There are some great guides in the Nexus One Dev section, the best IMO is this one:

If you already have the full update flashed, you don't need to do the radio again.

by the way... do you have to have the Android SDK installed for this to work? because it says to type different commands in, but into what terminal..?

zach, I was in the same boat as you, and I was looking for an ultra-noob friendly walkthru for rooting. I found youtube to be the best source, as you can see the process on someone else's phone first. I was shaky reading even the walkthru on xda forums, but youtube cleared it up. Just google "nexus one root" and you'll get a boat-load of videos.

Oh man I didn't even think of that. Thank you so much for the idea.
The big reason I needed to root the phone was TETHERED access! Both wired and wireless.
I travel a bit, and more often than not I cannot get a decent WIFI signal, or I am in someplace that requires me to pay for access (like a hotel). Almost EVERY hotel in Las Vegas for instance requires you to pay for internet access.... but with tethering... I am golden and surfing the web for free.
I also use SetCPU for profiles for when my phone is sleeping, charging, etc. I can usually squeeze out a little more life in the battery this way. Also... CacheMate is a great tool (especially if you are not using Apps2SD) for recovering extra space.... it's a "root" required app.
If you are a App-o-holic.... and NEED the extra room on your phone... you will want or need Apps 2 SD... .. and will need to have root access to do this.
Hope these suggestions help.
Some of my favorite things about rooting are Cyan's High-Mem Kernel, doubling the memory available, Tethering, Themeing(I can't stand the standard notification bar), and setting my clock speed to stay between 998 and 768. If you think the Nexus is fast now wait till you get High-Mem and change your CPU Clock settings.

Hey guys,
I just got an Iconia for Christmas and love it to death. Seems like the perfect tablet for me.
I see a lot of stuff on this forum about rooting however and I'm curious what the practical benafits to rooting are. I origionally had planned to route the iconia because I heard it didn't support netflix but the netflix app seems to work fine on my device so I'm happy there.
There were a lot of things that made me want to route my phone (Samsung Epic) such as the desire to tether other devices to it and get rid of all the Samsung, pre-istalled BS and Touch Wiz which made the phone run slowly. Those considerations don't exist here as Honey Comb seems to be plenty fast and there doesn't appear to be many BS additions from Acer.
So, with all that in mind, what exactly does one gain practically by rooting the Iconia?
I rooted my a500 so I could connect to ad-hoc networks and use ntfs drives.

It is a very personal question in the sense that there is no one, single reason why people root. I for example rooted because I needed ad-hoc wifi, otherwise I could have well survived without rooting. Once I did root my tablet I did of course install CWM so I can take a full backup of the whole thing -- better safe than sorry, as they say -- and tried a few different ROMs too, though I then went back to stock as it was the least buggy.
Just ask yourself: is there anything I need root for?
I think I root for a few different reasons.
ClockworkMod for nandroid backup and other things.
Titanium backup for app/data backup and easy bloat remove/restore.
AdFree
overclocking and other performance adjustments
Cifs/Samba support - I have 3 androids with share links on my PC desktop for drag-n-drop file copying without wires.
Root explorer of course.
Drive mount seems to need it.
Oh and theming - I like to theme and make small code changes.
Essentially, if you need to ask that question, you don't need to root your device....

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I was all set to root because I heard that Netflix wasn't functioning on the Iconia and rooting was easy.
Now I find that Netflix works fine and apparently I shouldn't have let my tablet update when I first turned it on.
Guess I'll leave my Iconia alone for now.

One word really - titanium - there is just no better way to make a full backup.
But having said that - with all the rumors of ICS withing maybe weeks - rooting may not be such a good idea right now ... most OTA updates do tend to have issues with rooted devices.

while i understand why people say only root if you have to, if you've made your way here i'd suggest you do it anyways if only for the clockworkmod recovery while more or less makes your system unbrickable. when you start looking at custom icon packs, gps, wifi and lag fixes, optimized filesystems etc. it gets a lot more appealing.

Havent seen a reason yet to root my A500 as it does everything I want, possibly if I got a wildhair and wanted to install a custom rom. On the other hand I bought a Kindle Fire and I rooted it and had a custom rom installed withing a week, primarily to make it more like my Acer.

Unbrickable? I keep seeing threads of peopleeho havd just bricked their systems while trying to foot. It's the main reason why imhesitant to root.
I just got mine and always thought I would root it, but I don't see the point yet.
I rooted my Evo so that I can remove bloat, increase battery life, and most important wirelessly tether with my tablet.
The battery life on my tablet seems amazing, honeycomb seems fast and the bloat doesn't bother me as much.

i rooted and installed thors rom, its awesome.
No real reason either, I just know from past experience every device is made more enjoyable with the right rom.
Plus with ics coming soon ill have to be able to backup my data to survive the upgrade.
I find out About Rooting (or unlocking) before I buy any device
#1 Freezing Apps (like Deleting, only safer -Titanium Backup)
#2 OverClocking to 1.5 Ghz and still being stable (up to 1.64)
#3 Under clock (216,245 mhz) (saving battery life)
#4 fun to be "ABLE" to tweak out something.
#5 Example : -a new trick to get better Wi-Fi or 3G Signal, or better GPS (you'll need ROOT to edit system data)
KNOWING that you can always get back to stock in under 5-7 min (if you have to bring in device)
Leaves you a better question.

I just got this tablet for Xmas, well the Packard bell one but from my understanding there the same. I still need to root mine. I've heard that you can connect a ps3 control if your rooted. Is this the only requirement?

I currently have a rooted SGS2 so I know about rooting but I would like to know are there some cool features with root vs stock? Also which rom and themes (I love themes) do you recommend for stabilty and great battery life? I would like to keep all the features like snote, multi window etc.

Here is the biggest reason why you should not root....... Because rooting will void your warranty.
Everyone says just use Triangle Away and reset, well that is all fine but If it needs to go in for repairs because it will not restart or hangs at start screen you will be sorry.
I would play with your note for a month or so before you root because there are many apps that let you modify your tablet without root.
Here are a few that I have used that can make your tablet look very cool and backup data without root.

For me........ I can not afford the risks that comes with rooting my $500.00 note 10.1.
I purchased my note for its great productivity ability and the s-pen option.
I do agree with you about the power and funtion that you get when you do root an android device, that is why I purchased a used kindle fire for $70 bucks and rooted it. The kindle fire has given me countless hour of entertainment loading many different ROMs, backing up the images, loading scripts and anything else that I could think of. I almost bricked it a few times also, some of my crafty experiments left me without the use of my tablet for hours at times and I came darn close to bricking the device for good a few times but was saved by XDA kindle pages and a micro usb dongle.
Yes, the power of root does become addictive and newbies need to be warned of the potential consequences and risks involved when rooting.

+1 for this. This was what did it for me. Other than that, I was already quite happy w/ the stock rom, so I kept it. I don't use it on this device, but you can also freeze or uninstall bloatware if you have root.

What if you run triangle away right after flashing a new ROM? That way if it bricks or hangs at the start screen, the flash count triangle will still be 0. Would that work? Is there really no way to remove the triangle through USB and a computer?

Triangle away will remove any counter trip. And if you're worried about rooting and warranties, you can just as easily unroot. Rooting can save you some headaches, since it's much easier to back up apps and such (titanium back-up, for one) and as you mentioned the ability to flash nice themes, such as kalagas.
I haven't flashed a custom rom yet, tho I have flashed Kalagas. Nice look!
Do some reading and enjoy your note, it's a great tablet with lots of potential to personalize it and make it your own. (check out some of the home screens in the Apps and Themes forum)

As stated in the Triangle Away Description on Google Play.
"Please also note that some devices set the counter to 1 at every boot if you are running a custom kernel or recovery. On these devices, Triangle Away may always display 1 - make sure to check the counter in actual download mode".

Friend of mine bought a Note 3, he has no plans to root it though and I can't blame him because unless things have changed the triangle of doom is not removable... Right?
Anyway, can you guys list some must have tweaks for a stock phone? I am so used to having root on my Note 2 that I take it for granted - I mean, I honestly can't imagine not having SU access and all the goodies it brings to the table. Nova Launcher is the obvious place to start, as well as SwipePad (to save hitting the home button), what else?

Foe me, it will always be a firewall. the rest I have no need for, but I am probably in the minority.

Before I rooted mine, the most fun I was able to have was jumping on the XDA forums and reading about all the people who did have root.......

Thanks didn't know about SwipePad. It is great for the Note 3. Just discovered Swapps which is great for easy access to recent apps. Using both together now.
The most fun you can have without root is reading about those who have it :/ I don't trust myself not to screw up on the 'undetectable' roots..
I think it's emulating different portable consoles! N64, Gameboy, PSP, DS, etc. Installing launchers, changing icons, homescreen layouts, looking for the best apps in different categories. But hey, that's just me

also im getting great battery live even though im not rooted
no root? can't even imagine how lame that must be... 480dpi by default? wtf is this phone for blind people? (no offense to blind people..)
no firewall? no bloatware removal? no titanium backup?...people actually use android phones without root? why not just buy an iphone then - my world collapses =)

You know you dont need to install the latest firmware just for the sake of it?
On my old Note 1 I kept using CM 4.1.2 over 4.2.2 builds for a long time because I didnt like the new notification panel stuff and waited until aokp modded 4.2.2 to include traditional toggles etc. Plus it was more stable and things that I wanted to run actually worked better.
So all I'm sayin is, if you have root for rom x but there is an update to y, with no known root method yet.. then me personally I'd always chose the rooted rom over the non-rooted - unless there is something huge that youre missing out. And dont worry, root will eventually come to all the roms. (at least if youre willing to trip the knox flag)
But this is just my personal opinion off course - I just cant imagine anymore how it is to have no root for an extended period of time.. (my first phone without all this knox bs cockblocking was rooted by me right away and never lookin back hehe)
So I just rooted my tmobile gs7 running 7.0 and I have no idea what to do. I've been looking and looking. searching and searching and I can't find anything useful as far as apps or mods or even roms. I'm just wondering if rooting was a waste of time or if there is actually stuff out there? What's everyone else woth American models doing with their rooted s7? Should I just unroot and go ahead and upgrade to the s8?
It depends of you, if you root and don't need root, then why root?
I personnaly rooted it to have full control over my phone, install some mods and do some theming over system apps.

...it is really simple, one app will make a big difference now that you are root: AdAway (goodby ads)
And if you despice bloatware, go for Titanium Backup and get rid of all those stupid carrier and maker apps.
And if you need a little more performance and keep apps off your RAM, try Greenfy.

Thanks for the responses. I rooted simply for the fun of it. I remember back when I had my gs3 and rooted there was a bunch of roms and cool mods and apps to do pretty much anything u could think of. I thout it would be the same thing this time around but I ended up stumped when I couldn't find anything.
I rooted my phone so I could use an ad blocker, replace Samsung's emoji, and to properly install the Pixel Launcher. I was very disappointed that there's no TWRP or much in the way of custom ROMs.
Just out of curiousness. I am looking into rooting and now with this thread I have an idea of what I want to do. What method was the most efficient to root for you?

I used max lees method on YouTube. He has a site called high on android and another called galaxys7root.com (forgive me devs if him or his methods are banned) just make sure rooting is really what u wanna do. I say that because your phones performance will decrease. Even after tweaking the cpu and all that good stuff my phone still runs inefficiently compared to pre root. Best of luck

In my honest opinion it'd probably be better to wait. So far it's done more damage to my phone than it has helped and to make things worse I have yet to find a solid unroot method so now I'm stuck with a slow phone that force closes and lags all the time

If you'd like to unroot just simply flash a stock odin tar. If you don't want to wipe I'd uninstall any root applications and flash the csc_home.

That's the method I was,looking at. If you rooted already how's it holding up?
I rooted today and installed superman rom only problem i have is with my vr is jittery when i move my head

After rooting my phone for a couple of weeks I came to the conclusion that it's not worth it. Here's why.. the biggest issue I had was my phone was constantly over heating and the battery was draining much faster than when on stock. Yes I tried things like greenify and other apps that are supposed to help battery life and several cooling apps for the over heating issues, but none really fixed the problem completely nor even that much at all. Rooting also made my phone lag and run very glitchy. I was very disappointed because I really like using Xposed to customize my phone, switching emojis to iPhone style, and getting rid of ads but all in all, those things just didn't outweigh the issues that came with rooting. I think the root for snapdragon models is just very sloppy and isn't as good as it can be and until then, I would not recommend.

What carrier do you have for your s7? I've had to unroot several times and have not had any issues what so ever.
How about S-Health

I have a question, I had a SM-G930F, I rooted it and after, I wasn't able to use S-Health anymore. So I sold it and buy a new SM-G930V.
Will I have the same problem if I root it? or there is a trick to make S-Health work with rooted S7(snapdragon of courses)?

rooting used to be a way to hide tethering from your carrier. i have 14 gigs of hotspot plus unlimited data on tmobile so i dont need to hide it.
my main reason for wanting root is to debloat the phone. i would also love to install vanilla android but i doubt that will happen.

you dont need root really to debloat it you can flash the unlocked s7 variant rom thru odin theres also an app called package disabler pro which really helps as well.
