Any kernel that eliminates fingerprint Reader lag? - LG V20 Questions & Answers

because of androids new doze mode, it takes forever for the phone to wake from sleep now.. even if it was just put to sleep 30 seconds prior. are there any kernels that help this annoying wake delay?
Sent from my LG-US996 using Tapatalk

Try different governor and scheduler settings using a kernel editor. might get better results without having to change your kernel.

you can adjust the stock kernel?
Sent from my LG-US996 using Tapatalk

im pretty sure stock kernels contain different governors and schedulers. they wont be aftermarket ones but you can have a couple different options to try atleast.

hmm interesting. I just wish doze wasn't so stupidly aggressive. like it's so aggressive yet I see no battery savings at all compared to phones on 6. 0 and even 5.0

Doze isn't stupidly aggressive, the way LG has the firmware setup/not setup is slow. Of all the devices I have owned, the V20 seems to have the worst fingerprint unlock speed. Luckily, it should be something they can fix in firmware, should they ever decide to push out firmware updates lol. It's very much like the S7/Edge. With the stock firmware and lockscreen, it's wretched, yet you could install Good Lock, and it would be significantly faster. I am hoping the issue lies with the LG Lockscreen.

Not sure about anybody else but I just got a V20 yesterday (H910) and after doing two factory resets (because I'm odd that way) and then putting in some fingerprint images - and I removed the thin clear plastic that is/was on the fingerprint reader disc, that might help but I can't speak for anyone else on that - what I've noticed is that it's probably 1/5th of a second to go from unlocked to the Home screen on this V20 I have.
Is that fast, or is it slow, I guess I can't say but it seems awfully damned fast to me. Sometimes I'll barely graze the reader and figure it won't work and voila, it unlocks even when I'm using the very tip of an index finger (along the actual top edge) and I really don't think that should enough to unlock it but again it happens anyway.
Pure stock device, apparently it's still on the 10L build from December - I'm not an AT&T customer so it looks like I'll be stuck on that for a while as I'm still considering unlocking the bootloader/rooting and as I understand it that requires that build, haven't decided yet. Overall it's a nice phone but I'm really disappointed in the camera quality, I mean really disappointed - after owning a G4 I swear no other smartphone camera has even come close in my opinion, I really miss that device.

My fingerprint reader used to be WAY faster until I rooted. It was just as fast using the Reserection Remix ROM but I had to go back to the NotSoStock ROM too many bugs for me. I've tweaked my CPU Governor to the best middle ground I can get between performance and battery life. Still having lag with the Fingerprint reader but not as bad.

it's related to how LG uses doze. because the phone doses immediately when screen is off and it cuts power to the scanner. this can be seen by shutting screen off then immediately going to unlock with finger scanner.. it's incredibly fast. then, wait 45 seconds.. and try again. incredibly slow. it's shutting down the process into doze mode and it has to wake when it senses a finger. it's annoying
Sent from my LG-US996 using Tapatalk

I've had my v20 since October 27th. Never been reset and my fingerprint reader is lightning fast no matter how long it's been sleeping. Does it matter if you have the 2nd screen always on? Mine is. And as long as it's on the reader is instantaneous.

mines always on too and it'll take like 5 seconds to register from a deep sleep. unlocked us996 here

Is your OPT feeling pretty slow?

Hey all,
I bought a One Plus 2 yesterday (coming from the Galaxy S6) and immediately noticed how unbearably laggy the Oxygen OS was - am I the only one experiencing this? I get a few moments of fluid animations but then things just get choppy, especially compared to the Galaxy S6. I've since put the Chinese Hydrogen version on and it seems a lot more fluid but I just feel like it should be a lot faster? I've been considering just selling it on but this phone is perfect in nearly every other regard.
I was thinking that maybe this is just how things will be until some decent updates come along? Unless I'm the only person experiencing the choppiness.. Then I suppose I should be pretty worried indeed. As a point of reference, I've also used the Moto X 2014 and Z3 Compact which both seemed considerably smoother in operation. Some input from you guys would be great, along with any tips you might have to get the most out of this amazing phone.
Thanks.
Lol coming from an s6 you think its laggy? I switched from an s6 and compared to that this is the fastest phone I've ever had
Sent from my ONE A2001 using Tapatalk
Yes it is laggy as oxygen is still on beta, but you should wait and give time as it is a beast, give some time to one plus and they will fix the issues
You did update it right? The build it comes with is as dog**** as the home button is
Just update to 2.0.2 and u'll be fine.
Sent from my ONE A2001 using XDA Free mobile app
Yup.. It usually lags when you switch to airplane mode.
Sent from my ONE A2003 using XDA Free mobile app
Phone is brand new. OxygenOS is in beta.. Let some development happen man, these specs dont lie
I updated and just got mine! Excited but it is slow. Some things up
Seems fast to me. I showed the OPT to my coworker who has an S6 Edge and he was impressed. He said it was faster than his S6. I didn't even ask him that.
Lol you obviously didn't use the fingerprint sensor to turn it on then or try to go to the home screen pressing the sensor home button. Jk
I've had several phones with fingerprint scanners and this one is by far the fastest so far and the phone is quick. Home button works great also. Maybe I just got lucky.
Yeah mine's pretty slow. I went into a phone store today and tried out the Huawei Mate 7, which on paper looks way behind the Oneplus 2, and it KILLED my OPT when opening apps.
I often get lag here and there, but this is less of a problem for me. My mane gripe is how long it takes to open an app. Like, I hit the Phone icon and it literally takes up to a second to launch. That Mate 7 was practically instant.
What gives, Oneplus?
A lot of the issues I initially had with oxygen were fixed after disabling hardware buttons, including excessive battery drain, heating up, and lag similar to what you're seeing. Maybe it has something to do with grounding? Or maybe I just got used to it :S
This phone is just not meant to be a daily driver with the frustration it brings. If you want to be less mad install cm 12.1. Makes things much better than oxygen
Try flashing OxygenOS 2.0.2 again and then factory reset. You may see a bump in speed. I personally have no quirks with the fluidity of the phone. While it does have some bugs all over the place, never once did the phone feel sluggish. But with that said, the OS does need a lot more polish to really make it feel truly complete. Right now despite all the OTAs OxygenOS still feels incomplete, or maybe its because I'm too used to the versatility of a CM based ROM.
It's slow for about a minute after boot but then things are really fast

Actually, the problem is because 2 google apps are using your CPU way too much. Disable the sheets and the slides apps in settings and you should be fine. CPU usage dropped by 40% in cpu-z after disabling these apps.
Update:- actually the CPU now has really less usage after disabling (5% after disabling.).

That's something new.. I anyway just remove these apps from my /system..
Im on OOS 2.1.2 rooted.. Having xposed and AK kernel.. No lags.. Super fluid..
For those complaining about the slow app launching, download a 3rd party launcher and you'll see instantly the difference in app launching. I prefer google now launcher to maintain that stock feel.

You see, I saw some lag and I went to developer options>show CPU usage and the most of the CPU usage came from the sheets and slides apps.

Should I update?

Is it worth installing the new update that was released a few days ago? I really haven't seen any good discussions about it.
Has the battery life fix been included or not? Will updating ruin my chances of getting root (if it is ever found)?
I have the same question. I have been holding off on updates since I got mine in hopes of root. so far, not taking the updates has not caused any issues...so I would only install them if there was some advantage in them....better battery life or something.
Honestly...since i started using Samsung pay on my S6, i have not had root. there are definitely things i would love to have root for...but i don't miss it as much as i thought.
so anyways...back to the original question...update or not? I figured i would hold out until i was forced to update (like on the S6...you lost Samsung Pay unless you updated). But...with root not looking likely and me really not missing root all that much....if the updates significantly improve anything...i would consider it.
what are you thoughts???
Your choice is this basically:
1) update and get better security (may security patch) along with a few other things (bad one is DT Ignite, disable it immediately)
2) hold out and hope maybe someday you'll get root, but probably not until after you buy a new phone.
I've noticed my edge is doing good on latest update, battery life is as good/slightly better.

the only reason i did it was because now there's INSTANT wake when you press power. no more SD card wake lag. my 128gig card wakes instantly, sot hat's good.
however, i can't use double tap to sleep in nova anymore, which annoys the piss out of me. they updated some security BS so that whenever you do that, your fingerprint won't unlock it anymore. you have to do fingerprint THEN pin or code. it's REALLY annoying.

I've never used double tap to sleep, but I hear it is pretty cool.
I REALLY want to root this phone to remove ads and to use that dual-speaker mod that sounds amazing.

I just learned that the latest update fixed one of my biggest cons about the device: no support for USB audio. My FiiO Q1 now works flawlessly!
I've been running adoptable storage; I'm concerned that this update will break that. Anyone that can comment?
When the update first rolled out someone said they were unaffected. I actually plan to do that when I get home and have time to set everything up again. I really want here maps offline and adoptable storage seems the only logical way to go with that being nearly 7.5 gigs of data.

Smart Stay missing on ATT version?

I have no Smart Stay feature on my ATT V20. Is it called something else and how do I turn it on? There is no option for anything like it under the Display settings.
I'm tired of the screen turning off on it's own and having to constantly touch it to keep it on. Yes, I know I could turn the timeout to something higher, but if you're reading something and the timeout limit is reached, the screen will try to shut off.
Also, my research online shows that the V20 (international model, maybe?) has this feature. So why doesn't my ATT model?!?!

I kept getting battery drain from the apps (according to the battery usage list), so I gave up. I'm considering going back though, because now I'm wondering if the apps were only showing up because not much else was draining the battery.
Ill try again later this week and will report back. I first need to test a real battery drain that may have been caused by something else I installed.

Actually, if you want to try the apps out too and see if you get any battery drain, that'd be great. It'll give us something to compare.

They both drain the battery. I used them for a couole of days back on my G4 and uninstalled them and dealt with the fact I was gonna have to retrain myself.
I think we took smart stay for granted. I don't miss it.
Either learn to read faster or learn to tap your screen every 29 seconds. Just kidding.
Honestly, it was nice on my note4 but haven't missed it at all. I may go back to my note4 anyways. This phone makes a bad ass DAP with android and all associated features and multitasking to boot. Those dedicated DAPs made by Cowon, Onkyo, A&K and other brands are nice and probably give you slightly better sound and more features to tweak, bit for the same price you get much smaller screens if they happen to use android and not a proprietary UI.
Its weird cause some links have directions on how to activate the feature. I have the verizon variant and cant find it. I personally miss the feature.
Does iPhone 7 have smart stay?

Thinking of buying this phone but...

I have checked this phone in two different stores in retail mode. Both phones presented a weird slowness when coming back from an app to the home screen. Not always but sometimes. It took 2-3 seconds to load the home screen and icons. It was very weird from an otherwise snappy phone. Have any of you experienced this?

I second this. Hardware is top notch including the display. All the bells and whistles included.
Can you buy from somewhere you can return if not happy.
Slow has never been associated with the Mate 9. Software design is their main issue nowadays. They change/remove things without any real reason. Getting better with every version.
Lag, Stutter, freezing. Definitely NOT an issue with this phone. Best phone out. Buy it.

I've came from Nexus 6p, OP3T knowing there wouldn't be much development as those phones had. But I would say this phones software isn't that bad, or as heavy as Samesung or LG. Ive rooted and returned back to stock which I am using now on the US version. It's an amazing phone as is and the camera blows out the OP3T and screen size is a must. I hate little phones (personal preference I know) so yeah the Nexus and OP do have the development communities but for the price and how well the phone is made and the smoothness of which the processor handles the work load it is definitely a great phone.

It was probably running an early build. My Mate 9 has had 3 updates since I got it. No lag whatsoever.
Same here, no lag in any situation. Buttery smooth. Though I got rid of the stock launcher as soon as possible.
I get it sometimes. Coming out of an app and the screen will be blank for a couple of seconds (just the wallpaper) then the apps appear
Lag is normal on my 156 fw. No double tap to wake up. And other things. But one is fine battery.
No issues here. Smoothest phone I have ever had.

S8 is much slower than the Google Pixel?

Hi all,
Just switched to the s8 from a google pixel.
Beautiful phone, but if is noticeably slower, in many ways:
1. Poor screen responsiveness of the keyboard. Typing on SwiftKey is slower on the s8 than the pixel. It seems that take a split second longer to recognise the touch.
2. Scrolling stuttering. The pixel's scrolling is buttery smooth. The s8 seems to be seriously slopping frames for something as simple as scrolling a page of text on chrome!
3. App switcher. It's really very jelly compared to the buttery smooth Pixel.
Anyone else experienced these issues, and /or have any thoughts?
I had moments yesterday where my S8 had skipped or stuttered, but it's been perfect today.
No issues here, and I'm no samsung fan boy. I've got iPhone 7 plus, zte axon 7, lg v20, and I've owned nexus devices. But with My track record with samsung I'd know for sure in 2 weeks lol. Happy so far
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Has been butter smooth for me and I have not noticed any lag on the keyboard or in any screen. Not sure why you are experiencing such poor performance.
Pixel is bare bones and Samsung is full of features and customization (some useful and others a waste). Samsung is know for bloatware which slows the phone down, but my S8 is fluid.
I noticed the same thing
I noticed a delay with my s8 compared to the pixel xl when I happened to switch between apps on both. To test it out I opened up the same two apps and double tapped the toggle window button. The s8 is slower and not as smooth. There may be an animation speed setting that makes it faster but still seems like it wouldn't be as smooth.
Typing this in noticing swift key going slower too.
My battery is at 15% so maybe something is optimizing it and slowing it down...
Started having problems again. Ironically, similar to the problems that caused me to switch from the S4 to the S8 and to what the OP mentions.. Freezing of apps and high battery draw. Stuttering and slow to switch apps and unlock. Problems with keyboard not recording keystrokes. Then it goes b as back to being perfect again.
There is an update ready, but I'm having flashbacks to the update that locked the S4 down. I know this phone is already locked down more than the S4 ever was, but still...
No problems here. It's really fast. Faster than my old S6 Edge.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to get rid of it. (Yet) I'm pretty sure once you set it up to stop updates it doesn't show up. But same with my case I didn't know the update was going to break bixby button so I stopped it when I found out. I'm getting stuttery scrolling across various apps. Some are smooth though, and others more like a mid-range phone from a few years ago - not what you'd expect from a flagship device today.
I'm experiencing the stuttering apps. As mentioned in this thread, disabling window animations has helped with this experience.
This is my first android phone since the HTC one X.
Can we expect any custome ROMs? Or updates to improve performance?

Not all apps are created equal, some are smoother than others simply because they're written differently.
