I was wondering if any one knows of any root for the Sprint LG G6 or if it'll ever will?
Having had rooted phones is there a reason why the G6 needs root? Seems everything works quite well and almost all the bloat can be deleted.
Yes, it will get rooted. It just has not been out long enough. just give it some time, I am also waiting for a good root as I want to to make a couple small changes but so far so good. its been a good phone
Yes, it is a really good phone and I'm glad I chose it over the S8 but a deciding factor in me choosing the G6 over the S8 is I knew the Sprint S8 will probably never get root just like the Sprint S7 and I know historically LG G lineup usally get rooted pretty quickly
I am as well I never got the s7 because the power of that device over the s6 didn't justify spending the cash. and just fyi you can root the s7 https://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s7/how-to/sm-g930p-root-t3410604

Oh I didn't know you could root the sprint s7, Thanks for that info, now I can have another phone to experiment with (besides my Nexus 6) until the LG G6 get root.

Yes!
1) I am unable to use Titanium Backup Pro.
2) I can't use the full features of SD Maid Pro.
3) A number of other apps will not work without Root access.

You can't unless you can get Root Access. I use Titanium Backup Pro to freeze apps rather than remove them. I don't mind them being on the phone; I just don't want them running in the background and using up my battery. Once you have Root access you can usually install Custom ROMs (the operating system that makes the phone run). Many of these have the Sprint and other apps stripped out.

Ok thanks, I think I may have gotten HotSpot to work..... But you must have your MSL or the ability to edit information on the ##DATA# menu. I have mines working after trying the old methods from the G5 and Galaxies... This method works after reboot and you can just switch native tethering on. But I Repeat I Was Only Able To Edit The ##DATA# with My MSL.

So it's kinda hard to get it from Sprint.

I went ahead and got the LG G6 and that's partially due to your optimism that it will get rooted. No, I'm not holding it against you if they don't figure it out. So far it's a great phone but I miss being able to freeze apps with TBP. Do you have any news on progress for root access? Thanks.
I'd love it if development mirrored the progress in for the Sprint LG G4 where it was possible to edit a hidden menu and enable Wifi tether. Would be awesome if that could happen with the Sprint LG G6!
Hi wtharden,
Could you please let me know how you were able to edit the APN?
I have MSL code from sprint; once i get to the APN screen, i have 5 items; internet, ota, pam, ims, and GSM.
It doesn't give me any options to add any new one.
I can select ota to edit, which it asks to enter MSL code, but still nothing after that.

Now if only had an exploit for Bill Saver to just disay a blank text url for the add at the top of the screen or something. It'd be even better if I could hack it myself so we'd get it ASAP. We'd still view the ad links, just reduce battery drain, data use, and general frustration and still save.

For some reason I thought I read somewhere on the forums yesterday that after a fresh Windows 10 install someone was having trouble with MTP or Send_Command. I've got root running on my US991 now! I seriously blew my entire night downloading root apps, tweaking things, etc. once I got it rooted. I also read over soooo much of this forum that I can't remember what I read where, haha. Good luck!

Windows 10 can be tricky. I've had issues in the past issuing any commands to DL mode with Windows 10. This dates back to using my G2. I got it to work this last time trying, but you might have to use another OS if you can't get it to work.

I'm rooted on the US Cellular US991 10c. After a few hours of installing apps, killing bloatware, tweaking the ui, and setting my dpi to 540 I'm also enjoying better battery life and, for some reason, I'm not heating up nearly as much as before I root. Loving it.
Got a chance to get it done. Easy peasy. WOOHOO. Thanks again to all.

Yes, it's legit. The directions are all in the dev section.
BTW, this is only for unlocked bootloaders. ATT and VZW just move along....nothing to see here.
You need to flash twrp and a custom kernel and then download supersu from the play store. Enjoy.
You can oem unlock(boatloader unlock) the T-Mobile version in dev settings and when turning it on it gives notice that protection features will not work when turned on. So guessing that yes it does disable Knox. Also guessing the OP rooted using a common root method and unlocking the boatloader

Now that we have root are a lot of you going to root it? If so, why? I usually root my phones to tweak them to get the best battery life and performance with custom kernels and roms and apps like greenify. But the phone performs great and the battery life is great after debloating. I guess we'll have to see what the developers come up with but I'm loving life so far without root for the first time in a long time.

So I just purchased the 6P and I have a few weeks to wait for it's arrival.
Was curious if there is a way to alter the build.prop so that I can use my 6P as a WiFi hotspot without keeping the phone rooted. Verizon doesn't allow me to use my phone as a "hotspot" with my Unlimited Data Plan, so I've always had to use an xposed module or something to deactivate the subscription check. My hope is that I can deactivate this check then unroot my phone.
I don't want to be fully rooted on a daily basis because I am hoping to use Android Pay.
Hotspot works out of the box without any build.prop edits.

There was another thread were Verizon users on unlimited data confirmed. I'll have mine Thursday so I'll check as well.
personally i've seen mixed reports. i'm beginning to wonder if there were a "later" batch of SIMs issued that forced some VZW bloatware to be installed. i'm not sure if these rumors were true or not, as this will be my first non-vzw device.
as for the OP - if you end up needing to edit the build.prop, you can unroot after making the changes.
I have had mine since Friday and I can confirm that you can use the built in hotspot function with my unlimited data package with no pop up at all. It just works. I don't know why but I am not complaining like said above.
Great news, thanks guys!!
Now if we could just get November 18-20 here faster...
I'll have to avoid XDA all together as the draw of custom ROMs could cause me to abandon Android Pay, but tethering and no root is great! Only other thing I use root for on my MotoX is Greenify which should be nullified by Doze.
PSA: First thing you do with your phone, unlock your bootloader! Regardless of rooting or not, you want the flexibility to not have to wipe your phone if you choose to root.
I spent the better part of yesterday reinstalling everything because I chose to finally root. Android Pay works with root, you just have to disable Superuser to add payment methods.
Tethering also works with Verizon out of the box. I have unlimited data and not paying for hotspot.
Got mine today. UDP on VZW. Tethering works right out of the box. It's GLORIOUS. Used to Android pay to pick up six pack at the liquor store tonight. This may be the first phone I DON'T root LOL. I've rooted EVERY phone I've had. Who knew it would take a Nexus NOT to root HAHAHAHA
Seriously Tethering is the first reason for rooting. There are many others....but Tethering was my main reason. With it working out of the box....I'm going to let the Devs. work their magic before I go near messing with it. I left my wallet at home, but saw the wireless pay at the register....cha ching!

not only that but some adblocks work without root as well. i've become used to nine as my exchange email client, so replacing the exchange.apk isn't even necessary any longer.

So I got a notification that there is an update as of today 3/29 and I wanted to know if anyone here has received it as well and went ahead and updated. If so does your hotspot still work? I have done the MSL/DUN trick to get hotspot and want to make sure that installing this update won't break my ability to use the DUN trick. I do realize I will probably have to re-add dun to get the hotspot working again after the update.

I always look back to my iOS days, don't take updates unless they shove it down your throat. Yeah, I think this is what breaks the dun trick. I see I have an update available as well. I won't take it unless they force it. My hotspot is working fine using the dun trick.
My gig bucket plan includes free Hotspot, so updating now
Yeah I got the update also. Will wait until others install before I pull the trigger.
For me, the update broke the free hotspot trick that involved modifying the APN settings. They're completely locked down now.
Now my hope is LG G5... If same, I stay on S5 for a while.

Can't APN info be edited thru a program like CDMAtool? Even if it is disabled in the ##data# with MSL? I haven't needed tethering yet since I've had the S7, but it is nice to have for those times when my ISP decides to break.
Nonetheless, I am withholding performing the OTA even though most of the new stuff sounds good. I tried to capture the OTA's URL thru a logcat but it seems that Samsung/Sprint are too smart for stuff like that, or I'm too dumb or lazy lol. I wanted to get the zip from the server since you can't read /cache without root permissions. If someone can get a .zip of the OTA pulled, that would be great. An unlocked bootloader would be better. I don't really regret keeping the S7 (yet), but probably will get the HTC 10 if it doesn't have crap like the S7.

Couple days. If bootloader is locked, then we are out of luck more likely.

S7 took a day
It's already been confirmed that the T-Mobile G5 will have bootloader locked, I'm guessing this will apply to all us carrier versions
I can also confirm Hotspot broken. APN Settings greyed out. I hardly used it. But it was nice in an emergency. So if you need your free hotspot, do not update. I'm experiencing better battery life. But others have complained about bad life. I've remove and disabled all the apps I do not use as well as use power saving mode on most apps.
Can't wait for Root. Pretty sure I am not the only one willing to chip in a little to help get it going on ATT.
Yes, we NEED root, but we also have to get some money together for a dev. Take this post to the top! I have $50, anyone willing to match or add to?

I did not know that damn that sucks. Why just not ATT? Other Note 5s had root. But every phone I have had in the last 5 or 6 years has gotten root. My galaxy S2 on boost mobile I had root. My LG G pro on Att with locked bootloader got root. Same with my LG V20. They said oh no the bootloader is locked it will not get root.. It got root. When a phone first comes out everyone starts freaking out about root and someway somehow it gets root. Now you did throw a wrench in the machine about the Note 5 on Att. Hope I am right and we do get it.

I hope I'm wrong and we get root on Note 8 like on S8 and S7 versions.
The real problem is that root is not full root. It's always based off the engineering kernel/firmware now (for both the S7 and the S8) and it severely limits the performance of the device.
The S8 can only charge to %80 once it's rooted, it also breaks Netflix, and most of the Samsung apps. Also the bootloader is still locked down tight so there is no way to flash AOSP.
It's really not worth it. There are ways to get almost everything without root now.

yup, I can deal with no AOSP but not the 80% limitation of battery and breaking of apps.

Agreed. Practically everything I used to root my phones for can be done now without root. Theming, ad blocking, disabling bloatware, etc... It's great.
The only thing I will miss is Titanium Backup

I had to reset my phone the other day and I backed up my phone with Samsung and it did not save any of my settings all it did was put my apps back on my phone with no data for them. Can you do that with switch? Will it save my apps with the data and all?

It saves how your phone is setup, but, no, not data. I think it works fairly well though. I am enjoying the note 8 without root.

I just restored my s8+. Most of the app was restore, but not all. I don't know why. Launcher settings are all back include wallpaper. I like how cloud works.

Its best not to. Better to just log back in to everything. No old crusty data to cause errors on your new phone flash
