Galaxy S5 Battery Draining quicker than normal - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I flashed my SM-G900V a few weeks ago from 6.0.1 QB2 to 5.0 PB1 and I noticed the battery life is worse than it was before. The battery life on 6.0.1 was not the greatest in the first place. I was only able to get 3 hours of screen on time, if I was lucky I could reach 3 hours 30 mins. Now I am averaging about 2 hours 30 minutes and if I am lucky I can reach 3 hours. I took a look at the battery stats and I noticed mdnsd is the first thing using up 13% of my battery. What is mdnsd and is there a way to improve battery life a bit? I do not want to revert back to 6.0.1 as I want to root my phone in the future, 5.0 was what came with the phone when I got it in 2015.

Pb1 is and order stock rom qb2 is one of latest updates from g900v

Yes my S5 was running qb2 until I flashed it back to PB1.

Yes, older versions of the OS had worse battery life.

I went the other way about two weeks ago. Battery life on PB1 was never great and over the prior ~2 months I kept getting these episodes where something would go into turbo and crush the battery. I'm now on QB2 and it is very good.

That's about normal.

Worth rooting and using xposed?

Seeing some threads seems like root is not stable yet. Can people share their experiences on if it is worth rooting the s7 edge and what are the pros/cons u notice after rooting and running xposed. Example - significant increase in battery life.
Debating if I should root or not. So far getting 4 hours of average SOT.
Thanks

Root for g935 IS NOT stable and the Engineering boot is ment for the repair of software issues. Most users find that the con of poor stability outweighs the desire to root the device. However. If you happen to not like the AT&T or rom of your carrier you can install the Samsung branded unlocked device firmware (G935U). The stability of stock for me is key, and until I get a rom like Cyanogen or similar custom rom and unlocked bootloader I'm personally not changing a thing about this phone. I love it! Though I am following the development, pretty closely at that.
Hope this is useful mate, cheers.

Honesty not worth it, I had it for about 1 week and random soft bricks started to happen, extreme lag, and many components becoming broken.
You should wait for a more stable root.

I'm just itching for a reason. I've been checking these forums incessantly (came from nexus 6) to see when root would be achieved at which point I'd make the switch. Loving this device, but am excited to get into flashing roms in the future. For now, I can wait.
I'm rooted, and aside from when unlocking my phone, I don't notice any measurable lag.
Smooth sailing with xposed as well.
IMHO, just take it for a test drive when you get a chance, and see how ya like it.
Ive been rooted for almost a month now. Using this Method :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...-to-notes-root-install-xposed-unroot-t3411039
If you root and use the DeBloat and Performance .Zip included in the OP it should work just fine. The only issues ive found to happen are when I installed the Xposed Framework. For some reason the libraries in Xposed dont agree with the Eng Boot. That being said once i rooted and ran the debloat and performance fix zip ive been running great so far. ive managed 14 and a half hours of steady, stable use with about 53 percent battery left at the end of the day.
I had Xposed installed for a week or so. Not sure if it was the modules I had or what, but it killed my battery life quickly. I wiped my phone, flashed stock, updated to new PG1 Fw, then rerooted. Since not having Xposed, my battery life has been phenomenally better. Just my experience.

How did you manage to install Xposed with FlashFire?
I've been using 935 U that used to be a 935 A ROOTED , flashed exposed with flash fire and enjoy a ton of fun modules , I finally have embraced my s7 into my heart, and if a new ota comes out for 935 U I can odin flash back then take the update , I will say adaway youtube , and background playback alone are worth it , many other great mods working with this as well, lag go's away after a few minutes and I have to sign in to my wi-fi after each reboot, first thing I did post root was freeze security agent log with TIBU.
---------- Post added at 09:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:12 AM ----------
i downloaded the custom 85.1 manam build and flashed it , used exposed installer 3.0 alpha 4 and bingo !

I will agree battery was up and down when exposed was installed, but 98% of modules ran flawlessly , anyone know when an ota update may be coming to 935-U?

I came here to say basically this. My phone is totally stable and fast. As far as the wifi password issue mentioned, refer to this post for the fix:

Make sure to thank the poster!
My battery life is also great. Standby drain is better than any phone I've had. I get just under 1% an hour with AOD ON. Best I've ever managed before was 1% per hour, I could never break it until this phone with root.
what other good roms are okay with the ATT variant. I am getting big time android usage.

if you don't mind missing root, and other AT&T perks like VoLTE,...etc., flash 935U firmware.
Is that the only one? No note 7 ports?

At the mean time, AFAIK, the only international version has an unlocked bootloader for custom roms.

Downgrade to Marshmallow , Which model?

I'm planning to downgrade to MM due to the hideous Android OS and Android System battery draining. Getting hardly 2 hours of SOT with very light use. Anyway I know that I'll have to flash the factory image but there are a lot of model types and I don't know which to download. So how do I know the variant and is there a difference between them and is there a certain model famous for the battery drain bug while the others are working fine?

If you are going down to Marshmallow surely just go to the last version of MM
https://developers.google.com/android/images#angler
Grab - 6.0.1 (MTC20L)
I don't think battery drain was that much of an issue on MM but could be wrong, someone else may recommend a different build but i'd go with the last build. before nougat.

There have been rumors about a bricks while downgrading?
I am not rooted , no custom recovery, unlocked bootloader. So that should be okay right?
Can't see how bricking is possible. Unlock, flash, lock. Done a thousand times.

I downgraded using the listed build with no issues. Battery issues appear to be resolved too. Can't get over how poorly optimised 7.1.1 was.

You will be fine use the instructions on the sticky by Heisenberg and just use the files from that zip of the build i mentioned.
Hey, guys.
I want to downgrade to MM too because of the same battery drain reason. I'm running the latest PureNexus 7.0
I was on RR before. I'm rooted, unlocked, latest TWRP. Can I just flash my old RR Rom and the MM vendor image?
Holy Hell... I come here periodically to check whether battery drain has been solved. One of the reasons I chose a Nexus for was to get timely security updates. Tying them to a sub-par version of the OS ends up negating the advantage for me. How can Google mess up battery so much, after all the talk about battery life improvements with Nougat?

They were to busy with the pixel to care about providing to Nexus owners.
On topic I used the above factory image to downgrade my completely stock, locked, and not rooted 6P without issues.

For the record, I just flashed the MM vendor image and RR rom via TWRP and everything booted just fine and is running smooth. Didn't have to flash the stock rom. I'll just leave this here in case there's someone else looking for a solution

Seriously bad Battery drain

My s8 is super super disappointing! After trying 3 different roms I've gotten the same result.... Without a Sim, SD card, newly flashed rom without any accounts or apps battery stays up for around 10 hours. I've noticed that the cell signal (broadcast) has been draining the most so I put it in airplane mode to see if it's the problem... I did help but just by Abit, in 6 hours it drained 35% without touching the phone. I downloaded gsam battery monitor waited overnight and I noticed that Android os and the kernel are the most things that have been draining my battery. What can I do to help this?
I'd get your battery looked at or if look at your usage of the device
Flash new software... Or clear the cache from recovery

Lol thank your own post ? you can try it just holds battery stats tho.
OP you won't loose waterproofing if you take it to sammy.
Well I tried to flash a new kernel and my phone got stuck on the s8 splash screen.... So I flashed the king rom with the king kernel, didn't install any app or sign in to anything, did a battery calibration kept WiFi on without aod and without a Sim overnight. From 100 to 85% is that good enough or still something odd?

definitely not normal, flash stock ROM from Sammobile, and run it for a few days to check, then try custom ROM again, I took the plunge a few days ago and rooted my S8 (after being stock for 2 months), I'm running Batman ROM and have no issues with battery life at all so far, I'm getting 50+ hours between charges and about 6 hrs SoT which I'm happy with.

Clearly something is not right so a full wrote massy be better, just backup your data with Smart switch on PC, then you can restore after going to stock.

@Jostian Well I tried to flash stock firmware, all went well, Odin gave me the green light but the phone kept on rebooting straight to recovery. Did a factory reset in stock recovery and still didn't help, so I tried to flash a different firmware (because i thought the first one could be corrupted) flashed it and still the same thing and noticed I ran into a "software brick" (dm-verity error code 0x02) which I couldn't find any solution for it anywhere on the net except for returning it to Samsung..... So I flashed the factory binary, booted in it then flashed twrp through Odin then restored my full twrp backup, booted it up to my restored ROM then flashed again the same firmware I originally had downloaded the first time and again it rebooted only to stock recovery but this time when I did a factory reset it booted up!! Yay!! Anyways it took me all night (6hours) only slept 3 hours and went to work without the phone. I kept WiFi on no aod no sim no accounts and no apps and in 8 hours it went down only 2% which I think is super normal now! Now my question is should I flash a new rom like Batman etc?
Sent from my Redmi Note 4 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I rooted and flashed BatStock ROM this week, and am loving it, will go over to BatMan ROM after they have the Oreo update, for now the Nougat BatStock is brilliant as is their BatStock kernel, I was happy with Stock (unrooted) but gave in to the ability to 'play' more with the S8 if its rooted. and am very chuffed, battery life and responsiveness is indeed perceptibly better with BatStock ROM 1.6 (final release).
