Poor voice quality of caller. - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Only had my G5 Plus a week and have had problems with the voice of incoming caller. It sounds over modulated like it is going in and out. Sometime while on the same call it comes and goes. I used my sim out of my Turbo 2 to activate it on my Verizon account. I have done a reset of network settings. still no help. It doesn't do it all the time. Help me out here give me some ideas before I send it back. Thanks

We had this issue on my sister's phone and we sent it back. Another one will be here tomorrow. When you say enhanced 4G LTE, are you referring to HD Voice. If so how do you turn it off as I believe it was greyed out on the one we originally had. I went into phone settings using the dialer code and provisioned it off, but that wouldn't allow the phone to connect to the Verizon network at all. Why is this happening in the first place? I'm getting a little irritated with Lenovo at this point. No Android N for my Moto X Pure yet and now this nonsense.

I have that same setting on my MXPE so I will check for it when we get the new G5 Plus. Please let us know if you have luck disabling this feature and getting the call quality to work. My sisters phone was terrible, you couldn't even understand the person that called you. Of course her voice came through on my end perfectly. She was telling me about it and when I finally had a chance to troubleshoot it for her it was far worse than I expected, it was complete garbage. I have never heard call quality that poor before. If the second one is as bad, it will be returned and I will be moving on from Motorola and Lenovo. Once Lenovo acquired them they have gone down hill from a quality perspective it seems. I do like my MXPE for the most part but do wish it had an AMOLED display like my Galaxy S4 had.

I have reset Network Settings,then a factory reset. Both no good. I have turned off the Enhanced 4G LTE Mode will see what that does. I have a replacement on the way from Amazon. All in all I really want to find out what is causing this problem.

After turning off Enhanced 4g LTE and changing preferred network type from Global to LTE/CDMA this morning, I had no call quality issues the rest of the day.

I would try turning enhanced 4G back on and leave it with LTE/CDMA and see what happens.

So we received my sisters new phone and initially while she was over at my house the call quality was fine. She went back to her place and the first call she made was back to messed up. I had her disable the Enhanced 4G LTE mode and restart her phone and the call quality, although not HD Voice, was once again okay. She is going to test it again as she is travelling up the road a bit away from her home. I will report back the results of that test. I find this ridiculous and if Motorola doesn't release a fix within 30 days, this one will be going back too, and I will be done with Lenovo / Motorola. This issue is really a big deal since you can't use data while on a call with Enhanced 4G LTE turned off.

Did the same thing only I turned on the Enhanced 4G LTE back on. I also wiped cache using recovery mode. i have not had the problem return ,Yet

Idk if this will work but you can go into your verizon account on their website and turn off HD voice (voLTE) individually for the lines you have. This will force HD voice to turn off.

Anyone think Moto will actually fix this issue? The phone is working as long as Enhanced 4G is turned off, but that means no data while on a call. That is ridiculous in my opinion, and not an actual fix by any standard. So my sisters device is basically on a 2-3 week trial and then it will be going back if this issue doesn't get addressed. Very sad.

In my experience enhanced 4G did not cause the problem. Callers voice was still distorted with it off. Sometimes the distortion would come and go during the same call. I now have a replacement phone ( love Amazon) and I got a new SIM card for Verizon. So far no problems .. still holding my breath.

For my sister, turning off Enhanced 4G fixed the issue. Is it possible that a SIM could cause this issue? We bought a new SIM when she received the first phone. When we sent that one back and got a new one, we used the same SIM. That is the only piece that didn't change between the two handsets.

With a new replacement phone and sim card the problem is still there. only doesn't seem to be nearly as bad. I could still understand the caller. I might try and turning off enhanced 4G just to see what happens. I don't talk on my phone a lot so it takes awhile for me to test it out.

Sorry for my ignorance, please tell me what is the dialer code for this phone?

I have the problem of my phone doesn't ring. First time it is silent second ring is louder third ring goes straight to voicemail. I've had my carrier check it and they couldn't figure it out. We tried every setting. So this phone is going back. If the phone part doesn't work...it's not a phone. It's a "tablet"

I know this thread is a bit dated, but I jsut got this phone and have had it a week now. I am experiencing what seems like someone is hitting the mute button, and it happens on both sides, where it's like signal drops, and one side or the other cannot hear each other for abut 3-5 seconds, then comes back.
Example: Friend is talking to me, it suddenly goes dead air in mid sentence, and about 3-5 seconds later they are back only they are at the end of the sentence.
When this happens one side can hear, the other side cannot, so it's not a dropped call or dead air, it's just a cutout on the phone itself.
I have tried the solution of turning off "enhanced lte" so that option is not on in settings, and currently I haven't had any issues, but it's only been a 1/2 a day.
I'm curious though if anyone has found a resolve on this call issue, or if it's still on going or not.

That just happened to me today also. It switched from "H" to "E", then when I opened USA Today it FC-ed and the icon turned into a generic Android one like the app was on the SD card and unavailable (even though it's installed to phone) and then 5 more background apps that I didn't even know were running FC-ed (Amazon MP3, Finance, QuickOffice, something and then Facebook three times?) and the phone locked up. I was able to power off then back on, but data never came back even after waiting about 10 minutes until I powered off and on again. Quite odd.
I get the same issue where am connected to wifi and as soon as i walk away from it it doesnt connect back to the data network. I got a replacement phone coming so hopefully i dont have the same issue. Another thing is the random reboot and i get black screen a lot especially after rebooting

I've had the issue, but each time it appears to be related to JuiceDefender not properly enabling the radio. If I shut JuiceDefender off, the connection comes back, although sometimes its just easier to airplane mode it and be done with it.
I called T-Mo about it, they said call about a week after the inital release date and see if they have a fix by then, there isnt enough information kept since it hasnt been officially released yet.
I'm having the same trouble. Are you guys on the new sim card? I popped in the new sim card and the tech told me to not use it and just save it. I noticed when I put the new sim card a notification of a new voicemail came on. I didn't have any voicemail.

I constantly get the "check network setting, try again or cancel". My market wont load, browser says "unable to connect." This is getting stupid. When I call T Mobile it always start working and then cuts off shorty after hanging up. I've never had this isssue before. I live in the middle of the city. Only 3G around here. Its getting annoying.
Guys I'm afraid that it might problem with the antenna placement. Holding the phone on the bottom half will drop me from 3 bars of "H" to 4 bars of "G", then it will bounce back up to 4 bars of "E". If left on a desk then it will remain at 3-4 bars of "H". I notice this especially at a place where I have low-mid signal, such as my school (reinforced concrete FTL). When I have a strong 4 bar signal, it usually won't drop all the way down to edge but I do loose a few bars. I hope a simple software issue is enough to reduce this effect. I might be being crazy paranoid but I'm definitely noticing a lower signal than on my G1.
Try holding the phone by the edges, then hold it in a normal grip and see if the signal strenght changes (Menu->settings->status->signal strength)
I just got off the phone with tmo and was told its a known issue with the network affecting about 10% of users. The issue started for me yesterday on my hd2. He also said they have people working on it. I asked if I could get my buyers remorse set back 14 more days to ensure the issue is not permanment but he said that they are no longer doing extentions. I'm sure if I get tranfered to retentions the answer would change. I hope.

I'm also having the same issue. I just rebooted my phone, so I haven't had the chance of switching airplane mode on/off yet. I'll let you guys know if that works for me, either way, I'm hoping there's a fix from T-Mo.

Wow that's funny, my MYTOUCH does the same thing with airplane mode off/on. I also remember that the store demo g2 I played with last night had the voicemail icon in the notification bar, but when you pull the bar down, there's no option to connect and retrieve the voicemail. I found that even weirder since the phone comes preloaded with google voice.
Also experiencing the same issue here in Phoenix. Been having it since I got the phone on Monday.
I have been in an ongoing round of tech calls and will be having a follow-up with the tech who I spoke with last night... I've tried everything from APN resetting to swapping the SIM card to a total factory wipe -- nothing is changing this for me.
I *know* my neighborhood has full 3G access, but I am maxed out at 1 Mbps. (Before the factory wipe I was getting 0.35 Mbps.) If this doesn't change I may just return the phone and switch to Sprint to get the Epic 4G. I mean, I'm not getting HSPA+ coverage either way, and at least with the Samsung Galaxy S Pro I'd have a full 5-row qwerty...

called as well tech told me to turn off phone and she would refresh my signal and when it was turned back on i had all 4 bars and data returned and and its been on ever since without any drops in data....hope it stays that way .
ps...both G2`s had that problem and both cleared up as of now

If this happens, try going to settings->wireless->mobile network->network operators and see if you get an "Error while searching for networks" error as I did.
Reset fixed for me too. But it makes me worry.
I'm on a brand new sim card (switched to TM from ATT). I'm having some data issues too. I talked to TM tech support and they reset my connection but that did nothing. Now they're going to their android techs to see whats up.

Sudden Loss of Data on Nexus S

Hey guys,
This is actually my first post here but I do A LOT of reading on this forum.
I didn't quite find anything regarding my question (or at least a solid answer), however, so I've decided to post it up.
Has anyone else experienced a sudden loss of data from time to time out of nowhere?
I go from having Full Green 3G bars to grey bars out of the blue. I've heard the green bars is to let you know that you are connected to Google services but I am not able to access anything that uses data.
For instance, when I open up the browser, I receive an error telling me there is no network connection. When I open up anything else that uses a data connection, Market, News, etc, I receive the same error about there not being a connection.
This would make sense if I was moving and going in and out of service areas, but it happens when the phone is simply sitting on my desk and not moving at all. I usually use it to listen to Pandora while at work and have noticed that the songs cut in and out due to this sudden loss of a data connection.
I went from a Nexus One to the Nexus S and have never, not once, lost my full 3G bars in this same exact location. I personally believe its a software bug of some kind and have high hopes for it being fixed in the future. The N1 had similar issues when it first launched and Google / T-Mo were able to remedy that for the most part.
I am actually on my third Nexus S because the first two had some type of hardware issue; the first one's back button didn't work or light up and the second one had a blown ear speaker and would sound like a blown speaker in a car. As an early adopter, I expected this, so it didn't bother me in the least bit.
ALL of them did the same thing, so I know it is not just limited to my exact phone. This is definitely something with the Nexus S in general (or the current build of Gingerbread).
Can anyone shine some light on this situation? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work here guys!

UPDATE: Here are a few steps that I have taken in order to solve my sudden loss of data issue. I'm not guaranteeing this will work for you, but it has worked for me and a couple of users here on the forum.
Do the following:
Activate / Use the Sim Card that came with the phone (this is to ensure you are using the latest sim cards)
Make sure you have a 4G internet plan. (No t-zones, No web2go -- FULL internet only)
Call T-Mobile and have ask them to Reset your phone with their Towers
Here's a more technical explanation posted by Johoja:
1) Having network selection set to manual ( i.e selecting 302490 or TMOBILE) will result in No Service on a reboot. Solutions: - Have to cycle airplane mode to get it to pick up service (can be done with automatically tasker) - OR Use automatic network selection. (you can force wcdma only but that will reset the SMSC which is annoying if you go in and out of wind away/home areas and you want to roam.)
2) Being in a area with no service for extended periods of time 5+minutes(subway, basement, etc) will result in a dead baseband, meaning once you come into an area with service the phone will not reacquire signal, airplane mode will not work as the baseband is now crashed, cant maunally search for a network. Have to reboot to get signal. Solutions: -Use tasker to cycle airplane mode on and off when in no service areas i.e) search signal 4 minutes, airplane mode on 10 minutes. I read one users response on a different thread regarding something similar to the issue that I am having.
They said T-Mobile told them to get a newer sim card and that this may remedy the problem. In my case, this has been the only constant in the 3 phones that I have been through. I have had the same sim card for about 3 years or so now.
I will try activating the sim card that came in the box with T-Mo to see if this remedies the problem. Since I'm at work right now I will have to try when I get home later.
Does anyone think this will have any affect what-so-ever?
The galaxy s phones when first released, all variants, had issues of signal dropping from full to zero bars while sitting in one place. I remember because there were YouTube videos of it All over and it was shortly after the apple antenna issue.
Not sure if or how it was ever resolved. But it seems that Samsung may just have this type of radio baseband performance if we see all these individual units doing this. I don't know maybe others can respond.

I travel to the same location weekly with NEXUS ONE, signal never drops in the T-MO Country here locally, and streaming CNET POD CAST never a hiccup, however, with the new NEXUS S, I would lose DATA Connection only, while the 3G will show full signal. I had to reboot the phone to get the DATA back.

If you have T-zones or Web2go or Phones 1st web, you will have problems
I had the same problem too, now I fixed the problem. The thing was that had the wrong data plan on the NS, i had my old web plan from my hd2 which seems like different from the one for the NS. I restarted my phone after 5 mins off and now i have my internet working beautifly. A T-Mobile rep said that it was an error in the system that made the phone think that that was the right plan for the NS for a few. A glitch you may say, but all you have to do is put the right data plan that all, easy. Hope this helped and have a wonderful holidays everyone.

this is happening to me too, last night for a little while and today for about hte last 4 hours can't get connection back. i have full white bars, with 3g icon but can't access anything
So I activated the new sim card last night and I'm still having the same problem. Albeit it doesn't happen as frequent, but it still does it nonetheless.
I will call T-mo again to verify my plan. I am on a 1500 Minute Family Plan which includes unlimited data and messages. I will see if they need to tweak something and let you guys know if this remedies the problem.
Ok, it seems like the issue has been resolved after I spoke to T-Mobile earlier today.
The rep on the phone verified that the data plan I was on was in fact the correct one. He said he was going to reset the signal from the towers to my phone to see if this would resolve the issue. He asked me to turn my phone off for about 15 seconds after we hung up.
Since then, I haven't seen the problem arise again so my guess is that it somehow fixed whatever was going on.
I'll let you guys know if this changes and the problem occurs again.

What's with the CAPS? ?
On topic: i have a captivate and I can confirm that all galaxy S phones had droppend data. An official ota update fixes it so maybe you guys need to wait for something official. Isn't there a new firmware for the nexus S already? Try flashing that and see if you still have issues.

@timur525 Yea, I'm already on 2.3.1.
I manually updated the first hour it came out hoping that it would solve the issue. The problem was still there after the update.

I have exactly the same issue as the OP. Extremely annoying to reboot the phone every time it happens. One thing I have noticed is that my phone doesn't know its number. If I go to settings, about phone, the number says unknown.

That shouldn't affect anything. My number shows up in status.
I had this issue resolved a few months ago as the push-to-talk app Tikl requires this in order to use it.
I was having the problem even with my number showing up. Call T-Mobile and have them reset you with the towers like they did for me and see if that helps you too.

I posted about this same issue on wrong section of the forum. Ive had this issue ever since samsung vibrant. I have applanet installed on my phone and some of the app that i installed accessed my apn and totally changed my apn setting to "Sirious application disabled.epc.tmobile" or something like that so i wyped everthing off from the phone and so far i havent had the issue ever since yesterday. Also i had the locale and language setting to korean so im thinking that might be causing it also.

That's what I remember too. I think its just an issue with the radio Samsung uses in all their phones. Might not be a way to fix it if even their new phones like the nexus s still have this issue. They prob would have tweakdd it by now if they could.
Same problem here. Xmas eve on shift and I have a phone that had no connection whatsoever (not even phone capabilities) this may be the one thing that takes the phone back. (If it happens again)

Have you called T-Mobile to see if they can give you a reset to the towers?
I had this done yesterday afternoon and haven't had the problem again since.
Also, if you'really using an old sim, I would suggest activating the one the phone came with just to be on the safe side.
If that doesn't help you then I would at least wait until just before your return period ends to see if there will be an update to address the issue.

[Q] Loosing Data Service

This is my 3rd Sprint S4 over the past few months. All of the devices are loosing the 3g icon but will show bars. Voice and text works fine, data and 4g does not, i have noticed it usually happens when i leave a WiFi area and it has trouble switching back over to cell data. I can reboot the phone and about 80% of the times it will return to normal. I have used odin to reload to factory. I had my phone rooted only and recently install the Triforce rom to see if it was a software or Kernel issue. Same thing is happening on that rom as well. It doesnt matter where i am so i dont beleive its a tower issue. Any idea?
This happens to me as well. Just Sprint being crappy. Try turning airplane mode on and off, same effect as a reboot but faster.
I tried the airplane mode toggle but didnt seem to fix it. If i use even the "Hot reboot" option in triforce rom that doesnt fix it either.
Assuming this this is the same issue I always experience, there is no fix. It's a network thing. Is there 4G in your area?
What happens to me is my phone will be on 3G, then start receiving 4G, but it doesn't recognize that the data service is now different, so nothing works for 15+ minutes or until I toggle airplane mode on/off.
I take it you've tried just turning WiFi off?
Haha, yea, welcome to Sprint. Enjoy losing data when it's least convenient (such as when you need to use navigation or missed your exit and need to be rerouted). Oh well, the price we pay for unlimited data, right?
I have noticed the same thing since I activated my LTE radio. LTE is expanding in my area so I constantly go in and out of 3G and LTE service. Sometimes when this happens data just ****ing stops working until I enter airplane mode and then come back out of it (a reset works as well). For some reason (or it is just a coincidence) The problem has amplified since installing 4.3. Has anyone else noticed an increase in this problem since upgrading? This is absolutely a Sprint problem? Do we know that people have this same issue with other Sprint phones?
I have the same problem. From wifi to f data takes a little bit of time for it to switch over especially since the data toggle is gone with the 4.3 update. Unlimited plan is water downed from my experience compared to tmoblie. But tmoblie service was horrible.

Well Sprint's speed has always been an issue for most of us. That is no surprise. I at least expect to to work AT ALL which apparently it is incapable of doing recently.

If wifi is on 3g/4g is not there,, turn off wifi and you should see icon,, if you see bars it's most likely working :sly:
Edit just re read your post, I have the same issues sometimes and as posted above toggling on and off typical works for me,, good luck
Also is your network set to
CDMA/LTE/EVDO? Just throwing out ideas

I get this issue all the time & I have to do a battery pull to get my phone working again. Anyone flash a new modem which fixes this? The SGS4 is 10x worse than my HTC EVO 3D was with this issue.

Seems like a hardware problem based on your description. I am fully convinced that this whole flashing modems things is just a feel-good measure for people who have exhausted all other options. It was big in the Galaxy S2 days, but I have never seen any measurable difference between modems in any meaningful metric on that device. At least not one that could not be attributed to other factors such as signal quality and network load, and nothing consistent. A different modem isn't going to fix a hardware fault or magically improve Sprint's awful service.

[Help?]Verizon S5 - Can't Receive or Make calls.

I'm having a constant problem with my phone. It seems like any time I leave the house and return, I'm unable to make or receive calls, until I reboot or switch airplane mode on/off. I still receive and send text/mms just fine, it's only calls. Anyone experience anything similar or have any ideas what may be going on? I have a constant 3-4 bar LTE signal.

Same problem
I am also experiencing this problem. I can send texts and otherwise use data to connect to websites and such, but cannot make or receive calls. When someone calls me, it goes straight to voicemail. When I make a call it does not even start ringing, or beep at the start of a call to indicate the connection.
I had this issue when i first got my phone. i had to call verizon and they updated something on their side and reset a few things.

Part of me thinks this wouldn't be a bad thing to have, just in case that pesky Ex decides today is the day she wants to call you. lolz
Nothing Worked
If anyone else is facing this problem, I would like to say that all Verizon could do was send me a refurbished phone. Even after a factory reset and resetting the network (on their end) worked. I hope this problem doesn't affect too many people.

I had an issue with my S5 connecting to 4GLTE (Because of something stupid I did playing around). Chat give Verizon a ring (or chat with them on their website) and they will have you do the following:
1. Turn off WiFi.
2. Power down your phone
3. They will resync the signal (and do other secret things)
4. Power up your phone.
5. Your phone will reconnect to 4GLTE, the radio will then recycle, then connect back.
I've had zero issues since I did this a few days ago. Wouldn't hurt to try. Have your IMEI number ready for them incase they need it.

Didn't work for me unfortunately. I ended up going back to Costco and swapping it out for a new one. Back in business....for now. Thanks for the help.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5, 4G LTE, Verizon it can make calls and send text fine the problem is that it cannot receive calls and text. Grateful your assistance in resolving this issue.
I haven't had the issue for a while but I had to get a new phone from Verizon .

LTE keeps dropping

I was just wondering if anyone else has problems with their LTE dropping to 3G out of the blue. This happens when I am at home in a really strong LTE area. My wife's Nexus 6 doesn't do this, it stays in LTE. This only seems to happen to me when I am at home.
I am running the latest PN ROM, latest vendor and gapps, and I have tried numerous kernels. Both my wife and I are using the Verizon sim through Straight Talk.

I've made a post that mentioned this. There is a issue affecting only the Nexus 6p Phones. Google supposedly fixed the issue. Although Some seems are still having issues. Apparently it's stemming from the GPS. They have a workaround that's helping some. Have your carrier clear your location, disable your GPS, Reboot phone. Uninstall updates for Google connectivity services, and try to update it. And again reboot.
I continued having issues even though they fixed it, so I went cleared out system reflashed stock images, rebooted, via mskip toolkit. Been running pure stock except root, and been working fantastic with no issue. Hope this answers your question. Good Luck!
This has happened to me like... Once or twice since I've owned my 6P (~7 months) on Verizon (Non-MVNO VZW). Flopping airplane mode, Forcing the modem to reassociate would get it to jump back on LTE. The issue I've had more frequently (20-30 times since purchase) is the phone just falling off all data completely.
If VZW LTE coverage in your area is good (It's insane here in Florida) I'd recommend trying forcing LTE only.
Dial *#*#4636#*#* from the phone dialer. Then under the "Phone Information" menu. Hit the drop down that should currently say "LTE/CDMA/UMTS Auto (PRL)" and set it to LTE.
This is going to cause one of two things.
1. It'll fix your problem, Meaning it was actually some kind of provisioning/priority issue. Your phone for some reason couldn't hang on LTE, So it fell back to 3G to maintain connectivity. Even though it would've worked if it would've tried LTE again.
2. You'll still fall off LTE. But this time, Instead of falling to 3G, It'll disconnect completely.
If it ends up being #1, I'd try swapping SIM's with your wife for a day or so, Just to see if it follows the phone or the sim card.

I also just upgraded to the August security path.
Well my calls dropped out 3 times, On Oputs network Here in Austrlia and i was on 3G and good signal, Lastest Pacth and Stock anroid.
