10.1.2014 versus Sony Xperia Tab Z

I've seen lots of discussion comparing with the various iPads, but not much discussion on the Sony Xperia. I was pretty much sold on the Note originally as I LOVE my S3 phone, but I must admit I do see the reason behind all the negative Samsung reactions in terms of bloatware. Man do they put a bunch of junk on there! Luckily I have my S3 rooted and have successfully turned off bunches of bloat, and the phone is now massively faster . . . . . even on the stock ROM.
The more I play with the Xperia and read the reviews, the more I like it. The biggest 2 drawbacks in comparison are (1) lower screen resolution and (2) no S-pen. Neither one of those are deal brakers for me, but they do factor into the overall decision.
So, I know I'll get lots of pro-Samsung comments given the forum I'm in, but I'd like some honest feedback. Has anyone had lots of time with both tabs that can give some user level insight as to which way they would recommend? I have no doubt both are quality devices. Just trying to make a smart spend with my hard earned $. :fingers-crossed:

P.S. The new Kindle HDX is sneaking into the discussion, too. It has a *whopper* of a set of specs at a great price point. Root and install a well-built custom ROM, and maybe it kills all of them??

I love the resolution and feel of the 10.1 2014 but hate lack of root (0x0) and the physical button. S-Pen is a must for me or I would probably just go with the upcoming Nexus 10 refresh.

Are you saying root and custom Roms won't be possible on the 2014? THAT would be a deal breaker for sure! Haven't looked much at the N10, but I guess I should. When is refresh product due out?
And on the Big Orange, I firmly believe Butch is the man to get it done. Our true freshmen have shown some "sparks" here and there. Just don't have the exp or conditioning to bring it for 60 solid minutes. I remain big time optimistic we are finally headed back up. Goodness knows we mist definitely bottomed out over the last few seasons. Wow.

what refresh? as far as i know nothing has been announced and rumors say there wont be another 10 inch nexus this year

The Xperia Tab Z was my first choice was as I have an Xperia Z1 phone, however I ended up returning the XTZ after a couple of days and getting the new Note 10.1.
The biggest issue with the XTZ for me was the video playback quality. When viewing 1080p movies it seemed to be dropping frames, and as well Netflix and Youtube playback was no where close to my iPad. I didn't want a situation where I was only able to use the tablet for some things and then had to go back to using my iPad for watching movies or reading ebooks. There is also the issue of the Bravia engine on the XTZ which seemed to be putting too much contrast and sharpening into all of the videos and images. I can understand why they are using Bravia as it does give the illusion of a slightly higher resolution display, but it's no where near iPad quality.
The XTZ is a great tablet though, and if the Note 10.1 didn't exist it would be the Android king without a doubt.
The best thing for me about the Note 10.1 is that it is capable of doing everything with pretty much state of the art quality. I've had a few jaw dropping moments with it where the display truly give the illusion of looking through a window. It's fantastic for video playback.
It's been a long time coming to finally get an Android tablet that matches or exceeds the iPad and I'm so far pretty thrilled with my 10.1.

What are your comments on the bloatware and all the built-in Samsung apps? Did you delete or disable a bunch of those? And I doubt I'll be doing much movie watching on the tab, but I do like to play some of the higher end games every now & then. Currently read a lot of e-books on a rooted Nook Tablet, but hoping the new device will ultimately replace that as well. And I agree that one of your obvious goals is one of mine. Use 1 tablet for pretty much everything outside of phone & texting with my S3.

I also remember now why I punted the Nexus . . . . . no SD card. That plus constantly changing connectors plus the "do it our way or not at all" mentaility is the main reason I moved away from Apple products. I used iPhones up through the 4 models, and then made the Android switch. Haven't looked back on that particular decision!

Truth. The display is the best I've ever seen on a tablet. At full brightness it's absolutely incredible. The functionality of the SPen was the main draw for me with this tablet though. If you're a student or work in a setting that demands a lot of note taking then this tablet is the way to go. If I didn't need these functions, I would have waited for the new Nexus 10, which I'm sure will be superb as well. The ability to use this tablet as a virtual notebook for all of my classes made this the right choice for me though, even though it was quite expensive.

I am going to China on the weekend and was actually thinking of returning my samsung taking the Sony with me and then trying to find the 10.1 LTE version in Hong Kong on my way home so on a side note does anyone know how much the LTE version will cost in Hong Kong and a good place to buy it thanks

I loved my Z while I had it. My only complaint was that bad boy was a fingerprint magnet. I haven't yet tried a Note 10.1 2014 because there is no development for it or the Note 3.

As far as I know, 10.1 2014 is not yet available in Hong Kong.

So far all I have done is install Nova Launcher and turn down the animations to 0.5 in the developer settings. This makes it more than fast enough for me and I am not going to root or flash until we get a look at more finalized OTA firmwares. I know there are a lot of early reviewers that say this tablet lags, but since the first OTA update it has been running as quickly as one would expect it to.
I'm completely thrilled with this tablet, I can finally get rid of my IPad.

I've had the chance to own both for a while and there's pros and cons to each. The xperia was light, quick enough, NFC, DLNA, etc. Screen was good for movie watching. Expandable memory. Water proof. And it seemed less bloated although it really does have a crap load of Sony stuff on there. On the flipside, as one user said, it was a finger print magnet. It also felt extra long in portrait mode. Luckily it's a light tablet so it's not super uncomfortable but it does create a weird experience in portrait. Also, being a snapdragon s4 chipset, it's significantly slower during intense operations or even if you put a live wallpaper like ditalix live wallpaper on it.
The note has all the specs necessary, minus NFC. S pen is great just like my note 3. Screen in gorgeous. Relatively light in the hands. But again, as another user mentioned, the physical button is quite annoying in portrait mode and for a tablet so expensive, there should be no stuttering. Rooting is a fix for that though.
Although, neither was meant for portrait use, Web browsing feels more natural in portrait mode, much like the ipad. I still own both tablet, along side the ipad air. Note 10.1 2014 is my productivity beast at work and I travel with it. The xperia is my wife's favorite because she can read in the pool with it without a care, and takes it to the beach. The ipad is my favorite at home. Perfect for browsing the Web, chromecasting content, watching videos in bed, reading magazines, etc. Although, the note can do those things perfectly fine, it just doesn't have the same feel as the ipad for me when I'm in lazy mode.
Basically, if you u spend a lot of time outside with the tablet, xperia. If you need productivity first, note. If you want an all around great experience without all the bells and whistles, ipad.

To echo this, I would go into Best Buy to play with the tablets all the time, coming closer and closer to pulling the trigger to purchasing but stopping. When I read the specs of this tablet, I had to bite and I've been rewarded immensely for my purchase. I've had those jaw dropping moments as well. I ask it to do so much and it's almost like it's mocking me, tackling everything I throw at it with ease.

Between the Note and the Xperia, it all comes down to the screen. The Note wins, hands down.
I do like the whole waterproof thing, and it's a touch lighter than the Note. But the large bezels really make it feel clunky and less weildy in landscape mode. Samsung's decision to trim the bezels really pays off in usability. It feels closer to the iPad in portrait mode even though it's still the same 16:10 screen.
BTW, another area where the Note wins hands down is reading comic books. It's the closest thing to the printed page. I am awed by how great comic books look on the Note, even though the pages are less resolution than the screen itself.

I was looking at buying the xperia but decided to wait for this to come out. I tried both of them in a shop and the xperia was too bezzly for me and the screen of the Note was unreal. Anyways I just got my Note about an hour ago and the screen alone makes this awesome.

I have had a Xperia Tablet Z since it was released and its very nice. My wife loves it as well. The thing that is nice is that its extremely fast and has no lag. I am very impressed with the build quality, and battery life as well. I am not a fan of the case I have on it because it is a el cheapo leather case that is not that impressive. That doesn't detract from how happy I am with this tablet.
I am going to get a Note 10.1 2014 through work in the next week or so. When that comes in, I will give my wife the Xperia since she loves it. I think the Note 10.1 is going to be better for what I do than the Xperia. I am most worried about lag or response time with this device. I am going to use Nova launcher for sure, and root the device if possible.

One area where the Note beats the Xperia hands down is remote desktop. The MS app defaults to 1280 x 800 on the Note and is very fast. It defaults to 1980 x 1200 on the Xperia and chugs along with lots of tiling with tiny touch targets. The SPen allows you to hit touch targets too small for your finger and allows you to hover over links and menus. It's a fantastic rdp implementation on the Note but almost unusable on the Xperia.

Is this phone touch screen latency really so high?

Hi.
I've just bought this phone, and couldn't help but noticing that the touch screen response is noticeably slower than my Nexus 5.
Is it the hardware, or the software?
I'm afraid it's the former, especially considering that this is a china phone, but still, is it possible that not a single reviewer noticed this?
What about you guys?
EDIT: added video to make clear what I'm talking about.
EDIT2: tested the N4, N5, and P9 lite, and I'm 100% positive they're all that much more responsive than the Mi A1.
Does anyone know a way to improve the touch screen response?

Near three months with the phone and I must say that I haven't noticed that this far...

I am facing stuttering while I play fps games, and it's terrible.

You need a phone to compare with.
Ask a friend with a "western" phone to let you try his, and try scrolling up and down on settings page, and you should feel the difference.
It seems like the responsiveness is quite low...I didn't expect this from a 200 € phone.

I didn't either notice any latency. Maybe you can ask a friend with another Mi A1 and try scrolling up and down on settings page, and you should feel if there is any difference.

I don't know if You try to be smart but anyway...
This isn't my only phone at the moment so I can compare with few other phones.
Compared to almost any "western" phone" (whatever that means) within same price range the difference isn't visible for normal eye...
But as I'm not playing games or scroll up/down on settings page as my hobby so the "latency" Yoy are referring to doesn't bother me.
And I can assure You that if the "latency" or lag was common You would see it all over the forum...

I wasn't trying to be smart, I just thought you were using it "by itself" rather than comparing.
I'm not playing any games nor scrolling up and down all day long either, but I immediately noticed a much less responsive touch as soon as I started using the phone.
Maybe if it were true I'd see it all over the forum, but the same happened to me with my old oppo find 5: nobody mentioned anything about the touch screen latency, but it was mile behind the nexus 5, and even the nexus 4.
It's not too much annoying, but I admit it makes the phone feel slower and cheaper.

I agreed with you. And you're right about that issue.
I noticed that thing while playing some games and on some app it's barely happen. I noticed that on Fleksy keyboard ( not idea other keyboard work fine or not) I seen the same question asked by someone in this forum but he or she talk about the games.
I didn't seen that issue with my galaxy s2 i9100

Sir I can assure you that your unit must be defective or your eye is playing a trick on you(or you are very sensitive about the lag you are talking about.).
I am using both N4 and A1, and I frequently change those two for daily use. I didn't feel any difference in responsiveness.
Just to be sure, I compared those two side by side just now, and I couldn't tell any difference. Just to be more sure, I gave my friends those two and encouraged them to try out. They also couldn't tell any difference.

Not sure what do you exactly mean by touch 'latency' but I can confirm that the touch sensitivity on this phone is a little less than other phones. I used mostly samsung phones in the past, the S and Note series, and also the LG G4 and I can safely say that the touch on a 2014 phone 'Samsung S4' is better than Mi A1.
It feels like you have to push in just a little more effort than usual to register a touch, especially in the bottom right corner of the screen. All this fuss was significantly noticable in the first couple of weeks but now its been over a month with this phone so I'm getting used to it. Muscle memory has gotten a hang of just how much pressure you have to apply to get your touch registered.
I tried third party apps like touch calibrator and SGS booster but they haven't helped! Will wait for the feb patch, if it doesn't fix then will go for a root method to increase the touching sensitivity by manipulating build prop.

I'd really hope so, but I'm afraid this is one way for manufacturers to keep down the costs, while keeping up the perceived quality, i.e, they save on digitizers and give you 4 GB of ram instead of 3.
About the N4 latency, I'm not sure because it's been quite a while since the last time I used it, but the N5 touchscreen response is way better than the M1 A1.

I'm not talking about sensitivity.
I'm talking about the time that passes between your finger touching the screen, and the screen registering your touch.
I wish my english was a little bit better, so that I could explain it well.

I'm not aware of any.
It can be approximated with a camera that records at high enough FPS and calculating the delay knowing that every X FPS a second passes, like this:

I have also Nexus 5 and haven't noticed any difference in scrolling in settings, apps (I don't play games). The only thing I noticed is that on certain screen protectors the screen is often less responsive.
About "western"-chinese phones, the build quality of N5 and especially for example Samsung Galaxy S8 is way worse then A1 or Redmi Note 3 Pro (speaking of my own experience).

You're right, the Mi A1 uses better materials (way better) than the N5.
My point is that Xiaomi is (probably) saving in other things.
A phone isn't just its case; in fact, a smartphone is a mostly a piece of electronics, and my judgement of it depends largely on the quality of its screen, its chipset, etc.
That said, I don't want to turn this into a war.
I'm not even sure that xiaomi is saving in its hardware (maybe it's just poor optimization).
In the meanwhile, I'd like to hear other opinions, and as I'm exchanging the xiaomi with the moto g5s plus, I'll report back to let you guys know how it feels once I receive it.

Well, I realized moto g5s plus doesn't support google camera hdr+, so that's a no-no for me.
I'm thinking about the moto x4, which is also A1, but I'm not sure if a slightly better camera, IP68, and a better touch are worth 100€ more.

Apsolutely not worth 100€ more. Btw still don't see any difference in touch screen compared to N5. Are you playing games and noticing this or ? What is your LCD panel manufacturer ?

Untill now. I dont know this happen for all mia1 or just some device like you and me. First, I think this is a bug of software from xiaomi, but try some custome rom outside but still so laggy. The last hope is watting some kernel heavy mod, may be the problem will solve. If not, it definitedly hardware issue, and no way to fix that.

Thinking of upgrading from a Sprint Galaxy Note 4. Camera quality comparisons?

I've had my Galaxy Note 4 for four years now, and it's time for an upgrade. The only two phones I've been eyeing are the Pixel 3 XL and the Oneplus 6T. There are some other good phones out there, but the others I've looked at are unrootable. I love the camera on my GN4, and was wondering if anyone here has previously owned a GN4 and can give me a picture/video comparison with the Oneplus 6T? I've seen the reviews between the Oneplus 6T and Pixel 3, and the Pixel 3 wins easily. Sad thing about the Pixel 3 is that it's so expensive and has smaller battery, but I do love the camera results! I just have no frame of reference to compare my aging phone with the newer ones.

Honestly,if you're pleased w/all things in general with the Note 4,you're giving up a lot of features not found on newer devices.
I definitely recommend keeping the Note 4 before switching to another phone (unless you have a trade-in allowance).
If you're not going to miss an SD Card Slot/3.5 mm audio jack/I-R Blaster/LED Notifications/No Notch, then,you have the gains of more RAM & a newer phone w/better battery life/overall performance.
The OP6T is a nice phone,but,honestly,I think an OP5 or OP5T is a better choice,the former if you prefer the navigation similar to that of the Note4.

I do have an OP6T, perhaps you wanted to quote the OP?
Comparing phones is subjective at best,just hitting on the features he'd be leaving behind in "upgrading" to either phone.
To some,those features are antiquated,others no so much.
Given the OP has held on to the phone for as long as he has gives me reason to believe the latter....
Too bad the prevailing trend seems to be getting less for more $$$, it's definitely a trade-off.

I've definitely compared what I would be giving up to what I would be gaining. My Sprint GN4 has been unlocked to work with domestic GSM (I have Cricket wireless now) and I have no LTE, and probably missing a few of the used frequencies (although I have never really checked). I love the screen and the camera on the GN4, but I'm stuck on Marshmallow and no security updates. I've tried Lineage OS both Nougat and Oreo, and both have so many bugs, it's not worth the headache. Not to mention it's getting harder to find batteries for it. Most I find now are "new" but end up being used. The GN4 never really did have that great of battery life, so that's one of the things that makes me want to switch to something else. Not that I'm a heavy user, but when you start using the video and taking lots of pics on the GN4, the battery tends to drain quickly. And I was hoping I would get Android Auto to work without having to plug and unplug it several times for it to connect (It's done it on Marshmallow and Lineage OS). It's almost as if it's not loading the applications fast enough for the handshake with the head unit.
I would miss my SD Card slot, that's why I was looking at the 256GB Oneplus 6T model.

You're definitely in the right place for root/ROMs,OnePlus phones get a good variety of development.
One other feature I failed to address (the elephant in the room, LOL) :
Is the S-Pen something you're using a lot of on the Note4?
If not, then this is the place to be.
Guessing you're aware of the current state of things with the newer US Notes & the pros & cons of importing either version (Snapdragon or Exynos).
If nothing else, most T-Mobile US stores have working demos of the OP6T to test drive, see if it's for you. ?

I was in your same situation. I had GN4 for 4 years and now i bought the OP6t. Honestly i didn't use the camera of smartphone so much and i cant tell you the difference right now but i will do a comparison tomorrow and post the results here
But regarding all other things, the OP6t is the winner. Better display, great battery life, fingerprint sensor is fast enough (never used on note 4 because it was unconfortable for me), there is also the face unlock and it is very fast; you will not see the lockscreen most of times.
The phone is very very fast and well optimized, no lag and didn't heat neither after an heavy usage.
Feel free to ask anything for the comparision

The pixel 3 if you care about taking pics, rest of the hardware and value go for the 6t.

I think in the 4 years I've had the Note 4, I may have used the S-Pen maybe 10 times. It can be handy sometimes, but not really a show stopper for me.
I had looked at the International versions of the Samsung devices (GN9, GS9+) and sadly, I would be missing some frequency bands on those devices too

A good camera is important for me. Although I'm not a professional photographer, it has been one of my hobbies for a while. I've managed to capture some really good shots with my Note 4, hence my particular interest in the OP6T as a cheaper alternative to the Pixel 3 XL. I managed to get a look at a Pixel 3 XL in person today and the notch was like a slap in the face. Although, I do know it can be masked out. I don't have any T-mobile stores around that I know of, so I can't check out the OP6T in person. I'm starting to feel like Sheldon on "The Big Bang Theory" where he tries to decide between an Xbox One and PS4

I used the auto mode on both as Note 4 doesn't have the pro mode and also i don't know how to use it on OnePlus 6T.
Well, there is also a port of the google camera for OP6t, I have to try it too, maybe i could take some better shots with it.
Hope this evening i can take some shots with low light and even try the night mode, i will update here if i can

Zekol, I can't thank you enough for those pics! Those were exactly the type of comparisons I needed! The camera's are very close in quality, except the OP6T tends to over sharpen the images just a bit, which may be able to be changed in the app or by use of another camera app. If you do happen to take some night shots, just take a few, no need to work yourself to death

My Friend, you are driving a Model A, it's cool to look back on but this is a modern Corvette, AKA, a performance value able to whoop phones costing twice as much even if it is missing a few Gucci features. I type that having sent the Pixel 3 XL back and buying this phone instead.
The Note 4 was a little before Samsung really started getting good with their cameras, I'm not saying it was bad, I had one and in the day it was great but they got quite a bit more serious a couple iterations later and it shows; their stuff is top notch now. The 6T on the other hand is not top notch now, it's a second tier camera and you can really see this at night where the 6T camera is a fair bit more noise. In the day it's not bad at all though outside of pushing too much contrast outdoors in HDR; the picture will almost invariably turn out with a bright sunny sky looking darker than the reality. Overall though I doubt you will find the camera a downgrade. Portrait mode is actually useful for more than portraits, for example it can make a picture of something like a statue at a museum pop out of the background and it's a nice effect for such photos.
Performance wise this phone is going to be a whole new world of slick, no rom can make up for vastly more computing power elsewhere and you're going to feel it every time you pick up the phone and manipulate the GUI. You're also going to appreciate the little things that OnePlus has injected into the mostly stockish experience. You'll find that OnePlus tends to be an enjoyable ownership experience stock, they are the type of phone that grows on you. Dont want stock you can run dead reliable stockish roms, alternatively, greatly altered AOSP runs which may or may not be , ahem, dead reliable. But that's all part of the fun.
One thing you're going to notice is that the aspect ratio is comparatively sucktacular. The tall thin thing is great for girls but I would much rather have the older aspect ratios. It's annoying as hell when you're surfing the internet in landscape and the website header scrolls down as you scroll down because it can block as much as half the screen and with these thinner aspect ratios that doesn't leave much wihch sometimes making surfing a pain. I'd totally jump on a browser which blocked that behavior, also a phone that went back to the older aspect ratio but I'm digressing. You may not be pleased with the change, all I'm saying.
Minutia... Duel sim is an interesting capability allowing you to ditch a separate work phone, buy data from one carrier, voice and text from another, etc. I think more people would take advantage of it if they gave it a try. You'll be shedding your unholy attachment to chargers and day by day the anxiety you feel when getting too far from a power source is going to go diminish. How much you miss the S-pen will depend on how much you used it. You indicate that was seldom so it shouldln't be a problem. While you may be stepping away from many features I think like most you probably only used a small percentage of Samsung bloat and you're not actually giving up something you never used anyways. The feature thing is not so big as some make out.
All in all I think you're being silly. I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean you've clearly become much attached to what is an ancient device in cell phone terms and your attachment is clouding your judgement. New phones are substantially better in almost every way, I would be surprised if you aren't very impressed with whatever new device you decide to buy.

I loved my Note5 but having passed on the $500 trade in on the T-Mo Note 9 promo (still too expensive), I figured the $300 back on it for the 6T was too good to pass up. But I had many of the same concerns as you - I absolutely loved the screen on the Note5 and the picture taking quality, along with things like the headphone jack and wireless charging. But I bit the bullet because no more security updates for the Note5, no band 71, and I did notice that *maybe* Google apps were running a bit slower than they used to (figured maybe they were starting to be optimized for newer processors). But the phone was still buttery smooth otherwise.
I'm glad I did it though. It just seems so much faster, and that's saying something because I felt my Note5 was generally pretty fast.
The battery life is freaking phenomenal. That's the only reason I haven't missed the wireless charging. The screen is as good as my Note5, but the auto-brightness is not as "perfect" as it was on the Note. I read there is a tweak coming for that, but it hasn't hit the T-Mo version yet.
@krabman has it so so right with the aspect ratio. Sucktacular is a perfect way of stating it. It makes one-handed use very difficult because of how tall it is. But you get used to that part of it. Landscape is definitely less effective.
As for the pictures, I think it's kind of hit or miss. The low light is definitely better, and bright daylight is great, but I'm not convinced photos in moderate lighting is as good. I would still bite on the phone though. The prices they're getting for Samsung flagships these days are ridiculous. If you have other questions, let me know. Cheers.

OnePlus 8 discussion, what are you hoping and not hoping for.

I'm surprised I haven't seen any discussion regarding the OnePlus 8. The 7 Pro being my first ever device outside of Samsung universe, I'm extremely impressed and really want to carry on using OnePlus, even though they don't sell in my country ( Australia ) and I have to import it.
I am hoping that the rumoured punch hole display is not real, the screen being completely hole-less is one of the main reasons I change from Samsung over, I am not a fan. Even though I feel like it's true, I'm praying it doesn't have one

Flat screen, but we pretty much know that's not happening for the 8/Pro. 8 Lite is the only one rumored to have a flat screen. Punch hole is annoying, though I don't see it as any more annoying than the notch as long as there's a way to hide it from games, apps, etc like you could on previous models.

Light version means light in hardware. For me all the Lite phones are creap.

8 pro will have wifi charging and better camera. Issue will be the price!
I would like edge to edge, flat screen. Curved screen is nonsense. 5g works in my network so i don't need wifi (i use it Very rare), bluetooth, nfc, infrared (Never use those). I like a square corners phone. A lighter slim phone.

If the hole punch is on all Oneplus 8 variants then I'm really not interested at all. I'll probably stick with 7pro until another manufacture releases a stockish android experience, with nothing on the screen except screen, and at least 90hz refresh rate, and a decent development community. Oh and under $650 so that counts out pixels to.

My progressive desires: a refined pop-up camera, 90Hz standard refresh rate, anywhere from 8-12GB RAM, latest version of UFS (3.1 I believe), the latest amoled panel from big producers (Samsung especially), continued iterations of OxygenOS, better cameras over time, no 3.5mm jack, a card slot (or 256gb/512gb/1tb storage options that still retain good pricing), Ultrasonic ID fingerprint reader, higher wattage fast charging (like SuperVOOC), no wireless charging (it's a gimmick and unnecessary imho), top-end SD+Adreno chipset, stereo speakers, standard 5G integration (that doesn't spike the price), and a competitive price point.
I know I've just described the OP7Pro with a few alterations but the phone was breakthrough as a flagship and a great base point off of which to build new models going into 2020 and beyond.

every single leak i've seen has a hole punch which means I'm absolutely not interested. I am absolutely stunned OnePlus would be so stupid to go from a fullscreen phone that is heralded as one of the best ever and move to a hole punch thinking that is an upgrade. so disappointed

I'm on the same boat.
Punch hole display is deal breaker to me.
As for alternative only Xiaomi MI MIX 4 could bring full screen experience in 2020 without thouse nonsense punch hole,notch etc and despite non stockish Android out of box, but after oneplus xiaomi devices have the second strongest development community and support.
Google Pixel phones is not at my choice Btw.

I check for news on the Mi Mix4 and found that it too looks like the punch hole will be present

I don't want a phone with a punch hole camera, makes me sad OnePlus is going down that road.

punch hole does not break it, but curved screen - yes. that is a dealbreaker.

Hoping for a persistent notification LED in some form (due to the LED itself being removed in phones these days) - for those times I don't hear my phone go off.
I'm not going to change my habits i.e. pick up the phone every 5 mins to see if I missed an important text, no. I'd rather just quickly glance at the phone without switching it on.

Waiting for OP8 but is it possible to buy it during this quarantine period...? But the reach of Oneplus 8 series will be huge as all of people are sitting home and scrolling news feeds...

OnePlus 8T+5G (KB2007) daily driver review

Let me start off by saying I'm coming from a rooted OnePlus 7 pro that I had for over a year. And I switched to the 8T+5G as a daily driver almost a week ago. Here are my thoughts...
Display- 5 out 5 amazing
Let me start by reviewing the display, this was my most hyped feature the 120 HZ display coming from the 90 that I already liked I was excited for the 120. First thing out of the box I compared my 7 pro to the 18 just by swiping around playing with the home screen and I saw an immediate difference I loved it! I also use a tool, jOnePlus Tools, app to force 120 all the time. I am not a heavy phone gamer but the little bit of games I do play I love seeing high refresh rates because it just makes everything so creamy smooth. I'm loving the flat screen I hate curved screens.
Connectivity- 3.5 out of 5 meh not bad not amazing difference
I don't live in a major city but I when I have been in the city I didn't notice a huge boost of speeds but checking with speed tests at various locations I've seen roughly 50 to 350 megabits down and a consistent 20ish up.
Hardware- 4 out of 5 pretty sweet
I really like using my phone as a connected android auto for my vehicles head unit and I have a bluetooth connected cobra radar detector so my phone screen is on for radar detector plus phone running AA screen with music and maps running. Now on my rooted 7Pro, this would heat my device and drain it while it was plugged in like it was going out of style, so much so I built a makeshift cooler using one of my air vents and cover for my dash mount to keep it out of the sun. Using this same setup I don't even need my air conditioning running and the 8T stays decently cooled, not cold but definitely not hot without my ac running in my car. I also love the 12gb ram, on my 7pro I usually ran with about 2gb to spare on idle and I never quite liked that it was so little. This is coming from the pc gamer that put 32gb of ram in his pc back in 2016 thinking it might not be enough....
Battery- 3 out of 5 pretty disappointed it doesn't last all day
Let me start by saying that I think this could be a lot better if I had this rooted and was able to properly debloat it. But as of now that's not an option and my review stands. With or without heavy use it does drain fairly fast during the day for me. I only have a couple of apps that are not battery optimized (basically the same setup I had on my 7Pro but without rooted apps and it did last all day with heavy use) I also suspect that forcing 120hz all day makes a difference as well but only time will tell. I also make a point to never fast charge my devices because I want the batteries to last as long as possible so minimal heat
Overall a 3.875 (f*** it call it a 4 out of 5)
So far it's been a good successor to my 7pro.

Is it really "that" much better than say 7t pro 5g that can be picked up for 1/2 as much right now? I'm still on 6T right now, but was looking to upgrade. Still not quite sold on 8T, given how its cam is not exactly getting good reviews. thanks for this review.

I'm surprised the sensors are the same as 7! However, people on the camera thread are saying GCam helps a lot. Oh, plus they are going to improve the camera on each ROM update of course.

Coming from the 7pro, I definitely think it's worth the upgrade. The ONLY thing I could say the 7 pro was better was the screen resolution BUT I'm still happy with it on the 8t especially with the 120hz

I had the 7 Pro...great phone...never had an issue. I now have the 8T...great phone...no problems so far! I think the fingerprint reader on the 7 Pro was a "little" bit more accurate. I have to be more cognizant of placing my thumb dead center on the reader to get an unlock on the first try. It seemed that the 7 Pro was more forgiving on the placement. Signal bars on the shade appear lower...but the reality is not how many bars are showing but the actual signal strength itself which can be viewed in the settings. When looking in the settings they are both the same. I have not had any lost signals or disconnects so far. I liked the pop-up selfie on the 7 Pro because the screen was clean with no punch holes. However, I HATE curved screens...and I hope I never have to buy one ever again...FLAT all the way! I am not one to hold the phone 3 inches away from my face so I do not care, or see, any difference at all between the two when doing normal tasks. 120 refresh rate does make the phone "seem" smoother, but in most real world use running the 8T at 60 is perfectly acceptable. A few years ago the description "buttery smooth" was used extensively on phones that "only" ran at 60...so to me it's more of a gimmick than something necessary to a good phone. I am not thrilled with punch hole selfies...I rarely take any pictures at all and even fewer selfies...but I use a dark wallpaper so you don't really see it anyway. I wish it was centered instead of on the side but that's more of an OCD thing. Does the 8T work better in day-to-day functionality than the 7 Pro? NO it does not! They are both fast, smooth, competent phones that can take pictures, make phone calls, and communicate using email, and texting. So, for me, the deciding factor was the flat screen VS the curved screen. As I mentioned already I hate curved screens as I think they serve no functional purpose on any phone other than to weaken the shatter resistance of an already fragile glass screen.

Thanks. I've researched the 7t pro 5g and development is definitely lacking (no twrp support even). Though I don't customize much these days, having a custom recovery has always been a must. Thanks for your thoughts, guys.

Is Oneplus8T and Oneplus8T+5G has the same codename kebab? As the only difference between them is the IP68 and memory option...

From what I can tell it's the same device. One is just sold by t-mobile the other isn't

It is weird on gsmarena says the KB2007 T-Mobile version has got IP68 certificate and the rest of 8T does not.

They all have the same rubber gaskets covering the ports and sim card tray. They are identical with internal hardware components. Only difference is that OnePlus didn't want to pay the extra money out for IP68 certificate with the non T-Mobile versions. Meaning that T-Mobile wanted this certificate to get customers to buy the device from them. A marketing gimmick both OnePlus and T-Mobile saw profitable potential in.
