CDMA compatible standalone smartwatch - Other SmartWatches

Ok first time posting here. In looking for a standalone smartwatch that is compatible with cdma. I use boost and want one I can switch to in weekends when I go places with my kids. Make it easy not having to carry my brick.

You'll wanna look at the Gear S line of products. There's really not a large selection of stand-alones, and an even smaller scope given Sprint and Verizon and their CDMA limits.

GSM vs CDMA

First of all, thanks to all who have already done what I have not been brave enough to do...which is purchase a Shift without the assurance of definitely being able to make it a cell phone. If this device was talking out of the box I'd have one already. Now that it seems like regular voice calls are going to become possible, which Shift would the experts recommend? I wonder how HTC is going to interpret the spike in sales once calling is a reality!
GSM v CDMA
Personaly i'd go GSM... (in fact i did)
mainly tho because Australia doesn't have a CDMA network anymore

Thanks for the replies. I'm leaning towards GSM since I already have AT&T service and I seem to get better coverage than some of my Sprint friends. I guess what I'm really interested in is if the Shift Project Members (SPM's!!) are working with GSM or CDMA units. I would assume GSM, since they came out first...would a CDMA unit to tinker with help the development progress?
They are using GSM versions.
I understand the keyboard layout is much better for americans on the CDMA version. I'd be interested to know when a USA GSM version is planned on being released.
More questions...
Aside from the cosmetic differences, (color, attached case), and the keyboard layout, I've been hearing and reading about build quality differences too. Some reviewers who have had an opportunity to test both models say that the CDMA version feels a little more solid than the GSM. Could this be due to small build revisions or maybe just be happening by chance? Anyone here gotten their hands on both?

Using a droid 2 in Canada?

Hey all,
My buddy managed to get his hands on a Droid 2 while at the MAX conference this week. Unfortunately for him, we are in Canada. If I were to root his phone could I just use the Telus radio frequencies that I use for my milestone on it?
Thanks!
I forget which Canuckian carriers are which, but if you have a Milestone, then Telus would be GSM and the Droid 2 won't work at all. You'd need to use one of the CDMA-based carriers to even have a chance.
Next is provisioning...all the programming for your carrier. I am not sure if the current level of unlocked-ness allows for other carriers' provisioning or not...someone with more knowledge in that arena would have to chime in, but I am leaning toward no, as I have not seen any discussion about converting a D2 to work on Sprint, etc.
And even if that works, the carrier will determine how easy it is to get going. They may activate out of network ESNs with no fuss, or more likely they will not allow it, in which case you have to go more illegal routes, that IIRC are not even allowed to be discussed on here.
FWIW, I used a Droid Incredible in BC (Vancouver, Victoria, Whistler) this summer. Worked fine, for the most part. However, I have a Verizon account and paid for their Canada roaming and international data packages. So I did not work directly with any Canadian carrier. But at the basic technical level, the phone CAN work in Canada.

Thanks guys ^^ I'll let my buddy know his phone is really just a android touch in Canada.
Hey all,
Instead of making a new thread, I figured I'd should just pull this one back since it's the same question.
I've been seeing talk about a droid 2 global. Is there now a way to make a droid 2 from the states work in canada?
Thanks

Can the Epic be used in Europe and India?

I plan to sell my Epic to a friend who travels and spends a lot of time in Europe (the UK) and India. I want to make sure I do everything so the phone works in those places outside the US. I have been reading mixed answers about whether the CDMA technology will work in Europe and India. Could someone with experience and knowledge about this topic comment?

It might work. You'll have to call sprint and ask if they have service there. They'll probably refer you to this other company that sells world phones and ridiculous 2 dollar incoming and 3 dollar outgoing per minute plans. That's what they did for me when I asked about Afghanistan

Most other countries use gsm. That's att biggest advantage over any of these other carriers. So slim possibility for cdma depending on where your going.

I think there is CDMA in India, cuz the old miui dev lives in India and has Airtel and used our epic on that and has since gotten an Evo 3D. IDK about Europe though. If you wanna talk to him, PM ahmgsk

There is plenty of cdma coverage in India. Only Eastern Europe has CDMA. However getting to work is no cakewalk and could permabrick your phone (all sorts of QPST nastiness).
Personally, I would just buy a used Captivate on craigslist for $100, then unlock it yourself and use that with a local carrier. It's less messy (phone wise, GSM only requires you to pop in a sim) and really isn't that much of an expense in the grand scheme of things.

I second this. Also if your friend doesn't need data then find a friend who has a an old tm/att razor they will give him and he is good to go.

Will work in India, not the UK
As noted, there's lots of CDMA in India. I just used my Epic there last month. But the UK is out of the question as there's no CDMA there in the frequency bands that Sprint uses.
All the other options to try and buy GSM phones are not something I can use, as I am trying to sell my friend my phone, an Epic bought and used in the US, so I can move on to another phone and use that money. The question was whether this phone can be used in India and the UK. Some of you said you have used it in India. Did data and everything work? How did you get it to work? I will also pm ahmgsk, the dev in India, but I would appreciate your input, too.

It does not work in europe which is gsm but it does work in india on rcdma provided you know someone who can get the meid registered in their database, I am using it on rcdma.

He or she must not be a very good friend.
Anyone who tries to do what you are describing would be tearing their hair out trying to get their phone to work.
CDMA makes it very difficult and possibly illegal to move phones from carrier to carrier.

Lol I wanna see america or india try to prosecute an american in india using an american phone on indian airwaves
I doubt they would bother to go through all the diplomatic hurdles that entails just to issue a 50million rupee fine which is like a dime lololololololol
But nah seriously, there's only a handful of countries that implement a form of cdma like japan, south korea and india
Most of the world is gsm. If our phones were world phones....oh lawdy lawdy lawd

Either way it's tedious and requires you have an indepth knowledge of QPST.
The legal way requires the Indian Telco to accept your ESN (which they probably won't).
The only other way is either personally knowing someone who works for the telco to add your phone anyway or cloning which is even more tedious and possibly illegal.
With GSM, buy a sim, pop it in, go on with your life.
Yeah but we need ways to sell this phone.
I'm sure op is down fr some qpst time
There's a thread in here to get it flashed to metro, boost blahblahblah so try that out and instead of using mtro or boost parameters, use the indian telco info

I am using it without cloning or anything of that sort, OP you need to PM ahmgsk or someone else who knows what to do, if you PM me can help.

Verizon Galaxy Tab 7.7 Voice hardware

Has there been any investigation or progress into whether the VZW version could eventually be hacked to work with voice plans somehow? The hardware may just be 100% data only, but not sure and we do know the others are phones also.
Verizon nor ATT will ever come out with a tab that will allow voice and data. If you a voice capable tab you are better off getting an unlocked import and either use ATT SIM or Straight Talk SIM. I know a lot people want the Verizon tab for the LTE speeds but as they say you can't have your cake and eat it too.

I understand all this. My larger question is whether it's been verified Samsung made this a 100% impossibility with how the actual hardware was actually implemented or if there is a chance a software hack of some sorts could enable voice plan provisioning and use. With ESN and IMEI based authentication of CDMA stuffs of the older tabs I figure even if it was possible VZW could have blocked it. With a SIM though I am not sure they could if Samsung left a door open to do it.
I would really like to see Samsung or other OEM just make LTE open devices available for us at full price as is supposed to be possible under the spectrum rules. I'm guessing they make agreements with VZW not to do this in order to get officially supported and marketed devices sold by them, but I am a customer that would like OEMs to try and get us out of the contract cycles so they don't have to rely on the carriers for sales so much. Not to mention people with grandfathered unlimited plans are quickly going to be VERY interested in such things as they try and force us into limited plans to get subsidies since throttling on 700mhz C-Block is going to be harder to justify in general than it has been on other spectrum.

Question for lg g2 users

Has anyone bought the (at&t or T-mobile) version because of the back buttons were different than the Verizon version but than used the phone on Verizon service?
i want to continue using Verizon but there version of the lg g2 sucks!.
is it possible to use the one of the other versions on Verizons service?
if i can is there any bad sides to doing so?
thanks to anyone that can help :good:
The vzw version sucks because of the buttons? Lame! Sounds like a user issue.

verizon model does have exclusive wireless charging built in
Haha well I can get use to the buttons on the back that Verizon has but the other versions just look so much better. I don't use wireless charging either
The style of Verizon's buttons arent going to stop me from getting the phone I just like the other version better

Technically you should be able to use it since they are world phones and have radios for both GSM and CDMA. The problem you are going to have is getting Verizon to allow it. AT&T and T-mobile will allow you to use your Verizon phone on their network. All you have to do is give them the MEID. They will even provide the APN settings for you if you ask and they are on their website.
Verizon however, is reluctant to allow ESNs that are not on their list. Same with Sprint. It isn't impossible, but you will have to jump through some hoops. There are forms to be filled out, similar to the one's to reinstate an ESN that has been flagged. It's been a while, but I believe you're looking at about a 3 week wait to see if it's approved, if they even allow you to submit the forms. I know people that have moved their Sprint phone over to Verizon, but in the end, they all agreed that it wasn't worth the hassle and they would never do it again.
EDIT: Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not 100% sure if the AT&T and T-mobile versions have CDMA and LTE antennas. Verizon's version has them all. It doesn't really make sense for Verizon's to get GSM antennas while the other's don't get CDMA or LTE. Then again, Verizon's was a modified version to allow wireless charging, so it wouldn't be out of the question.

Thanks, I never knew much about switching phones to new carriers, but now I don't think I'll take that route.

You can't use the ATT or Tmo versions on sprint or vzw. Different radios.

I would quite prefer the vzn version with metal buttons they are smaller button but I hadn't touched the buttons outside of booting from off and vol up occasionally

Thanks for clarifying. I looked it up myself. The AT&T and T-mobile versions lack CDMA 900 and LTE 13. Makes sense since the new nexus also skips the same bands thanks to Verizon being money grubbers.
