Buying s8 from Clove UK to Canada - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Do I need to pay for Duty + Tax (provincial + federal?) once it is shipped to Canada?
What about shipping with Royal Mail as oppose to DHL or Fedex? Would one not charge duty vs the other?
thanks!

Just assume that you will pay both, the guy with the great hair wants his cut too you know.

You will have to pay both as well as not be able to do warranty stuff easily.

He can warranty just fine. Clove/Samsung gives a 2 year warranty on all devices and will act as the liaison between you and Samsung.
You will however most likely not get the device until after the 28th. Seems they still have no stock and haven't began shipping

Easily is the key word. Will Clove send your device to a local service center for evaluation/replacement or will you have to return to the UK?

[Q] Best Buy - Sales Tax

I'm not sure how sales tax works in the USA, but with Best Buy do you pay the same sales tax in store and online (for pickup at that store)? The store I am thinking of is EVERETT MA, 162 SANTILLI HWY.
Yes. It'll be the same tax either way

Sales tax is the precise reason (or at least large part) why I decided to purchase my 32GB grey GT10.1 from Amazon and not Best Buy. Well, in full disclosure I decided to take my business to Amazon because I purchased a presale on the GT10.1 from Best Buy and the store GM guarenteed me I would have it on June 17. Low and behold come June 17 at around 7:00p I walked in to pick it up and they said "ooops, sorry but we do not have it yet and no, we have no way of telling when they will arrive." (Okay, I'm done ranting now).
Anyways I decided to go with Amazon because there was no sales tax and they guarenteed I would get it in 1 day with the 1 day shipping option. Sure enough my GT10.1 arrived 1 day later and the beauty of it is, the fastest shipping option from Amazon (1 day) was HALF the price of the sales tax I would have paid at Best Buy. Sales tax would have racked out at $45.43 and the 1 day shipping option from Amazon was $19.
Simple math, simple decision. That and I would MUCH rather give my business to a company that will actually follow through on their promise. Thank you Amazon.

I would rather pay the sales tax which in this case is $37.50 as I have the option of returning it to the store if there is anything wrong with it. The tablet is being brought back to the UK for me next week so I need the quick turn around, rather than having to post it back to Amazon etc.

Yeah, tax is the reason I ordered mine online...of course, I'm sitting here without my Tab right now because I had to return it and get another one.
I just spoke to Best Buy in the USA, and apparently they have international warranty, so their UK branches will cover any devices that go wrong. I wonder if this is actually true...

yes I use to think that way also. But if you have problems and need to return if for what ever reasons. Then it's a problem.
Hello everyone. I'm about to buy the galaxy tab and was also deciding to pay the Best Buy tax or not. I noticed everyone said they didn't pay tax on Amazon but I am being charged $44. Could this be because I live in NYC? I noticed Newegg doesn't charge tax. Has anyone purchased their tab from them? Thanks
Edit: Nevermind, I just googled Amazon's tax page and NY is subject to tax. Guess I'll buy it in Best Buy.

Err, better read the fine print on that "supposed" international warranty, as there's nowhere it stipulates that you can walk into a bestbuy say in the U.K or BestBuy Canada for example and they'll service it. Doesn't work that way.
The so called international warranty the sales person is salivating to sell you (also known as Geek Squad Black Tie Protection, GSBTP) is a REIMBURSEMENT PLAN, insured by an insurance company. YOU Re responsible for having it repaired at your cost and then contacting a 1-800-number to file a claim. Either mail or fax your paperwork over and you are then REIMBURSED for "qualified" repairs. Accidental or physical damages are not available for "international plans", so even if you're suckered into buying the plan, at least don't let them upsell you on the extra accidental damage protection.
How do I know all this? Used to work there at a store located in a high tourist area and used to weep inside at the foreigners suckered into "international warranties" that were all but useless, even on some products that CAME with worldwide warranties like some Asus laptops, Olympus and Casio cameras and so forth. I still know all the tricks and trade secrets.
Sad really.

I think this should help you decide. This is from Amazon Q&A.
The amount of tax charged depends upon many factors, including the identity of the seller, the type of item purchased, and the destination of the shipment.
Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington are subject to tax.
For sales tax purposes, electronically delivered products (e-books, e-documents, and electronically delivered software) are considered to be shipped to your credit card billing address.
No sales tax is charged when purchasing gift cards; however, purchases paid for with gift cards may be subject to tax.
Let me help you out a bit. If a store/retailer has a physical presence in a state it must charge sales tax so since best buy/ walmart etc have physical stores and shipping facilities in almost every state they have to charge sales tax online and at the store. With this rule online stores like newegg and amazon get away with not charging tax in states other then the ones they operate in. For example amazon has a large shipping and distribution center in Kentucky so it must charge taxes in that state.

Care if you are importing the phone!

Hello, I made this thread because I ordered my Samsung GS3 int version on ebay (I'm from Canada) and they sent it with DHL... Now I have to pay 120$ for custom fees... Every ****ing time I used DHL for shipping I had to pay for custom fees even for something FROM Canada, maybe they are quick but having to pay 120$ + 50$ shipping + 750$ for the phone is a bit too much, for that price I could have picked the 32gb version... So yeah just try to avoid DHL, I'm not saying that if you don't take DHL you wont have to pay for custom fees, but if you choose DHL be sure you'll have to pay an extra

Because it was marked for fedex shipping on ebay but the seller told me it's because DHL option is not available on ebay so yeah, it was said somewhere on the item description (something like 500 - 1000 lines) but I haven't seen it.

I know it's my government but with DHL you have to pay everytime, with fedex I never had to pay for custom fees... You can type DHL custom fees canada on google and you'll see how many thread there is about that, they are not even trying to avoid custom fees they just don't care about customers.

If the ebay seller listed fedex and sent it through dhl which costed you additional 120 bucks, you are entitled to a refund as per buyer protection program from ebay.
call ebay and get a refund. They cover shipping also in buyer protection.

Where can I buy the G2 in Manhatten?

Im not sure when this thread belongs, so I will just throw it in the G2 help forum.
Im will be flying to Manhattan and looking to buy the device once I get there. I want to step into a store and buy the device, however the prices are much higher tha Amazon. For example, I saw a 90$ price difference between Amazon and Best Buy.
Can anyone tip me on where can I buy the device in Manhattan, but in Amazon prices?
Thanks a lot in advance
I bought mine on eBay for 300, it would likely be more expensive in stores. And knowing NY you have to consider the sales tax...Anyway you can find it at T-Mobile, AT& T, Best buy, Verizon, etc.

Manhattan isn't exactly a cheap place either, 3rd party stores here usually charge MSRP, not the prices you find online.

Another related question:
If I buy via Amazon and have it sent to New York, will I get charged MSRP somehow? Will it have to be paid to the courier?
If not, then why would anybody buy in stores when everything can be bought via Amazon who are cheaper and have great customer service?

Peoples want it instantly and don't want to wait for shipping, rush shipping typically boosts the price to similar levels, also returning an online item is more of a hassle.
As far as I know Amazon usually charges taxes for all or most items in New York. Before it was dependant on where the seller was shipping from but Amazon is large enough that it would bring governmental and legal oversight if they didn't charge tax.
I'd honestly just purchase it from an official Att and Verizon store just to avoid any future trouble or warranty issues. A lot of the g2's on Amazon are the unlocked international version.

If you still rather buy at a store, some retailers allow you to pricematch to amazons cost. Only some. But going amazon route is indubitably the simplest.

I would really rather just buy from a store, because waiting for a package to arrive to the hotel will be make me worry all the time that it will actually arrive on time before my trip ends, etc.
Do you know of some store in Manhattan where I can try this approach?

Yes, however, it may not be here in the states. I have heard conflicting opinons, one says it has to be sent back to the UK, another says that Sony US will cover it .... YMMV

I just received one from FedEx. Apparently, I don't owe anything, but sent me a record to keep.

Question on returns

I have a question for those that have returned their OP 5. Was there any fee or shipping associated with returning or did you get 100% back what you spent? I bought my OP 5 on launch day and all the accessories were out of stock. Now they are back in stock but they want to charge like $24 shipping and I cannot use my $20 vouchers since I'm not buying them with the phone. I was considering returning the one I just got and ordering a new one with accessories included. Any downside to doing this?
I've just started the process in the US. I'm paying for shipping to their processing center. Accessories can only be returned if unopened.
Sent from my HTC U11 using Tapatalk
Shipping back to them should only cost $6 or so usps priority plus insurance.
What is the address of their processing center?
I was in same situation and returned phone I bought on early drop....I had to pay $9 as shipping fee to Temple, TX and should get 100% return. They said they accept only FedEx though...not sure if that is entirely correct...but I heard if you claim in PayPal, you will get the refund for return shipping also...

You get a full refund if you return the phone within 15 days after receiving it. At least that's what it shows on their website. I had to pay for return shipping and hopefully i get a refund for that. I sent mine back as soon it arrived. I didn't even open the box. It took two days to arrive at Oneplus location in Texas. I got an email saying they received my phone and wait for 2 days to inspect and get processed. Good luck!
