Smart phone build. - Hardware Hacking General

Hi guys so recently i started looking at trying to fix my note 4 and when looking at parts and how they fit together i was wondering if there is a market or where to learn more about phone upgrades? I saw a doco on wired last year about shenzen China and marketplaces for hardware they have where with the right parts could build iPhone copies etc.
Like how the camera is built in and connected if one were to find a better spec camera that fit the housing and could be wired up would it work or are there software issues with this too for example?

It might but u have to be running rje same program the camera came off of

[Q] Android Tablet Question

Sorry Guys not a specific X10 question, but as an X10 owner I thought this would be a good place to pick your brains on Android tablets.
I'm Looking at getting an android Tablet to mount in the dash of my car for using as a sat nav, music player etc, There are alot of cheap 2.2 Android tablets for sale such as this Flat Pad one.
http://pcvision.co.uk/shop/product_...ium=product_search&utm_campaign=google-simple
Alot of them have USB ports for web cams etc, do any of you know if there are there any aps that would display the camera output so it could be used as a rear-view camera?
Can you plug in external HDD to the USB port so the memory could be expanded above 32GB supported limit for SD cards? (necessary if to be used as an in-car media center)
It also states "GPS Capabilities (when connected to wifi)" why would GPS not work without wifi?
Also listed is Skype. Is the android market different for Tablets. I know that skype mobile is coming soon for all android devices, but it seems that a version of skype is already out on Android Tablets.
Thanks in advance for your replies.
I didn't know such pad existed until you pointed out, so thx
From what I can tell from the description;
1. You can plug in external hdd
2. Android 2.1 not 2.2
3. The reason you need wifi for gps to work is because gps on android uses data, so you need wifi or it says you can hook up a 3g dongle, which makes more sense for using gps in car
If somehow you get this android tablet entertainment setup to work let us know and post some pics, would love to see them
Good luck!
If you are going to buy one, research it first. There are some very cheapo dodgy looking ones around, make sure it has good support and supports apps you need.

I know I have seen cameras that can connect to Android devices via bluetooth. Can't find them now, so might want to make sure they are available before getting the tablet.
You would need Wi-Fi with apps like Google Maps because it downloads the map as you're driving. Check in the market, there are apps such as Co-Pilot where all of the maps are pre-loaded, so you don't need an internet connection for navigation.
I'd wait for something like the Galaxy Tablet.
I bought a $110 7" Tablet (EKEN) out of curiousity Even with a lot of people customs rom to improve efficiency, they just suck. They're slow, poor battery life, tons of market issues and the screen response is poor. I'd wait for somethign reputable before throwing any money down.
I bought one made by Archos, its a 5 inch screen tablet. Cost me about $200 on Ebay but it has 1.6, Though it is a good product. it uses WIFI and is great for an internet tablet. I also think it has GPS built in, but cost money for the service.
Edit: I remember, not all archos 5 tablets are android. You have to make sure it says 'andriod'.
Imagine the idea of an xperia pad..........
Na hope not

Wait for the Notion Ink Adam, coming out Dec this year. The Pixel Qi display even allows reading in direct sunlight, which could be useful in a car.
I guess I need to do quite a bit of research first, prob best to wait untill they have been out for a while and there is a bit more info available. Battery wouldnt be an issue in car as it would be plugged in. When I do eventually get round to it I will be sure to post some pics.
Something that would be good for a tablet is an app that would let you run more than one app in split screen as there is plenty of screen space.

[Q] Is there an android head unit out there?

Did some googleing and didn't find much except for some maybes and some oddities that i'm not too sure about so I thought I might come to the experts. I would love to have a small 7" double din head unit in my car running gingerbread or better android on it and tether it to my phone. That way I could add pandora/youtube/siriusxm/navigation/market/fruitslice whatever...
Anyone know of anything out there?
There's a couple on the market I've seen. Many are out there as concepts. In the Barnes &Noble nook forums there is guy who did a write up on how he installed a nook in the dash of his jeep. It's a 7 inch screen and fits with a little Modding. I'm surprised you didn't find any on your search.
- this sig is just so I don't have to write 10char when on my phone -

Those are the main ones people have been "keeping an eye on" since last year.
After talking with some friends that are in to car audio, I've deemed them all to be subpar for my needs so i just got a 32gb sammy tab plus, 64gb microsd card, and a $30 dash kit that i will mod for mounting. I think the three key things that a real head unit has over mounting a tablet are: 1) easy back up camera solution 2) satellite radio 3) built in bluetooth handsfree. 1 and 3 are possible, just not the easiest, and i have no use for number 2 since i dont subscribe.
*edit* - just realized i had subscribed to the thread boborone is referencing Nook Color in Jeep Wrangler
There is also the more mainstream AppRadio from Pioneer. Search it since I can't post links yet.
I have the Erisin 777A for the past 4 months, generally quite happy about it but wants better sound quality.
Clarion has announced an android head unit, the mirage, http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/28/clarions-android-running-mirage-ivi/
This one has potential, maybe upgrade is in the works for me.
I have been search and I have decided on mounting a tablet as well I just wish there were companies who make custom mounts to make it look OEM

Has anyone tried any of these or know if they would be any good hardware wise?
How about the possibility of custom roms or even rooting them?
This one seems the better choice in the fact it's a removable tablet. Not because I want a tablet but because it would be easier to bring into the house for flashing purposes. Never heard of it's CPU mind?

This one is quite a nice looking one with non removable screen. Has a Cortex A8 which I've heard of at least
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121016519547
So what's your views and opinions?
So no comments then? I'm really hankering for an Android unit in the car. Will beat the socks off the crappy 2din wince unit i have. The software on that is so cumbersome and doesn't match throughout the different modes.
Ok just found this Parrot Asteroid 2DIN. Looks very good but not available yet.

Also after watching some video's of the unit with pad I posted previously it seems that most of the main functions are handled by an internal process in the unit (maybe wince?) which then outputs video and control via the tablet. This has kind of put me off a little bit.
So after watching some other video's of the Ca-Fi I think I am going to go with one of these. The new one is upgraded to 2.3 Android, capacitive touchscreen and a 1ghz processor. So saving my pennies now!!!!!

Okay all this talk of android double din, well I have a double din unit in my car, all self fitted, it has 2 sd slots, 1 for GPS and the other for sd card for media, but was wondering if any of these slots can be used to "install" new os onto the unit.
How does the Os get installed onto these, there must be a way.

Hey guys,
There's a bunch of Android-based devices out there in the market. I'm looking for the best one that's available - are you able to recommend some unit?
I was hoping to buy the Parrot RNB6, but it seems it's an abandoned project.
Has anyone ever seen any specs on pre out voltage on any of these units? Or even better a digital out? They seem to be all about software on the specs minus the 55w x 4 channel spec, the biggest gripe I have the with main manufacturers of hu out there right now is you either get a nice ui and imo poor pre out voltage or a really terrible ui that is almost unbearable but high voltage, which in turn leads to higher volume and clearer audio. This is what I have found at my price range anyways and am not really willing to drop $2k on a head unit at this point. Anyways i am trying to look through all the links on this page but any help would be appreciated
Edit: guess it's 2/2 pages and not 22 pages haha, guess I did check them all

I have Audi S6 C5 and just need a regular 2DIN unit - it will fit. However, the chinese stuff I'm looking at other threads in this forum seem very crappy and of low quality.
Is there something that can be really reliable, working fast and with good audio quality?
headunit 4.4.4 quad core 3188
I have had mine for more than 6 months
Sound is great ram is only 1gb so app installs stop after pandora and waze, and one or 2 other items
I use a wifi hotspot, on tmobile, $10/month no limits.
pandora now works no matter who drives car, and NAV youtube etc
Not sure newer version of android would help, more ram would help more

Woot, Got a DS5 for 40$, So hello and checking in. =)

Hello. As an owner of a streak 7 I have on honeystreak. I managed to get a streak 5 for 40$, so I plan to play around with it and check these forums to see what this bad boy can do and if its worth keeping. So just checking, Is 2.2 better or 3.0 for ds5? (Doubt ICS is working yet here)
Also anything special I should know about the streak 5 that "could" make it better then the streak 7?
Anyways just thought I would say hi now on this side of the forums. =) Cant wait to go home and leave this hooked in my dock. =D (After I mod this sucker.. atm working on my G1)
I would definitely Recommend starting here to get some background information for the S5. Link to Everything you need to know
There is not a Honeycomb version, only Froyo and Gingerbread (I don't consider eclair useful day top day). It all depends on what you want to use it for. There are different flavors of ROMs out, and each one is designed to do different things, like Gaming, Stability, CM7, MIUI, Long Battery life, etc.
In my opinion it is best to start with the basics and then try all of them or a few of them to find out what you like and don't like about each one.
Yea thats the trick about every new android I mod.. finding out which is the best. Ok, I guess the MAIN thing I want, GB if stable, is good. Then the "must" feature I want, is a rom with cifs.ko kernel support (For network files and could watch videos from)
Good question about gaming tho, not sure if I would or not.. got my xperia play modded for that heh.
Streak 5 is really good for daily tasks you throw at it, provided that you at least root it and remove all the bloatwares, maybe use custom launcher, custom kernel might not be preferable cause some basic functions may not be working.
I've moved on to XPERIA arc S late last year, but I still help with settings/tweak for the Streak 5 --- I gave mine for my nephew, he mostly uses it to play games (as much as his father allows), and Streak 5 is quite good at it, newer HD games might not run, or require tweaks to run, but most games on the Play Store would not be difficult for it to handle.
The only rom worth trying other than official rom is CM7. it offers many useful functions.
The best official rom is probably the only 2.3.3 rom. But it consumes more battery than the 2.2 rom.
Im on streakdroid 2.4.4 right now. Seems to be fine. (I know the devs work from my DS7) Also has the cifs.ko support which is helpful for network stored videos. Add the dock, and wham. instant entertainment. (Or even without the hdmi dock)
My Dell Streak Story
nice score for $40!
I know how you feel. I got my first Streak 5 about 2 years ago on ebay for $73 because the guy lived out of town and no post, only pickup. He also listed it as Dell M01M tablet and not in phone or tablet section. Came with no charger or cables and seller couldn't tell me if it even turns on. Took a gamble and drove 2 hours each way to pickup. Didn't have a chance to get a usb cable to try it before pickup, so I butchered a lithium-ion camera battery charger and wedged 2 bare wires in the battery contacts and charged it from the ciggy lighter socket in the car! After a few minutes, I put the rear cover on and pushed the power button and got a warm fuzzy feeling as the Dell logo appeared on the screen. After a while, donut 1.6 fired up and Stage UI appeared and I was the happiest person in the world!
I am typing this post on that first streak right now!
2 years later, I now have 3.5 x Dell Streak 5 (.5 is one with smashed lcd for parts). 3 of them I paid less than $100 each. I paid $150 for one that came with a lot of accessories. I love this thing. It is without doubt, one of, if not THE best value android devices on the second hand market!
I am currently working on making a mounting frame to turn one into a carputer to fit in double DIN slot in the dash.
Out of all the roms for the DS5, I like the CM7 the most. I have a Galaxy S2 with ICS rooted without mods and it doesn't really offer anything useful that CM7 doesn't cover. A lot of the customisations in CM7 like the notification panel mods are way more flexible than ICS. I don't feel any need for ICS with CM7.
I switch between using the streak and galaxy s2 as main phone.
Got my girlfriend finally using a streak as her phone because she needs screen size to use a web page to book rostered hours for work and as she put it "using a normal phone to do it is crap!" She also prefers the bigger screen for playing Angry Birds!
Would go a galaxy note but at about 7 times the average price I paid for each streak, I'll stick with the streak!
Have you considered a S7 for a double din mount?
I hear it's exactly the size of a double din if you remove the case and side bumpers (or something to that degree).
A S5 would leave a lot of unused space, unless that's the plan so you can put something else with it.
carputer
I don't really want to strip the casing to mount it. I am trying to do a neat mount that only shows the screen and capacitive buttons and front camera. This means I need room in the frame to hide the dock connector and a button mechanism to press the volume/power/camera buttons which will be covered by the frame.
The other benefit of using the S5 over the S7 is the FM radio capability of the S5. S7 doesn't have the FM tuner.
I still need to get the FM thing going.. not got around to looking that up. Im still debating if I will use Miui rom or stay on streakdroid 2.4.
Luckily this isnt a bad thing to play around with.. since its not my main device. Thats my G1. Thats the only one I dont reflash every chance I get.

For starters, there aren't alot of problems with it. The only issue is that the left side of the screen has some weird screen lift. It isn't noticeable unless you look at it at an angle and are really looking for it. Not all have this problem and it seems to be corrected in the newer units with the exclusion of 2 screws (the culprits).
Other then that, it is a great tab. Hardware wise, the N7 is vastly superior. The rubberized back is awesome.
Plus the iPad Mini is retarded. It isn't that much smaller then a regular iPad 4 that is a much better buy if going the iPad route.
I've owned an iPad1 and iPad2 (trying to diverse) but found that Apple products aren't very productive and useless outside of media consumption. I can get the same satisfaction out of my Android Tab with the benefit of actually using it for work. Once I had my fill of a few Apple specific games, I started to use it less and less and less. To the point where it would just sit on the charger for days without use. My Nexus 7 gets it's use. I use it interchangeably with my phone so much that my phone lasts MUCH longer and my N7 is needing a charger by midnight (from 8am). All of the games, surfing, XDA, facebooking, tweeting, etc is done on the N7. My phone is for calls, emails, and SMS/Chatting. Both are happy.
It is also very nice to have an Android phone and tablet since you can bounce between both using similar apps and really marry them with some great apps. DataSync automatically keeps my app data in sync, so my game saves are constant on either device. Apps and Games I buy for my tablet also work on my phone without a separate purchase. I use WiFi Tethering with my 4G Galaxy Nexus to keep them both on the same network with internet access. When Tethered, I can also use WiFi File Explorer to share files from either device.
Awesome experience. The small size of the N7 is really great. I came from a 10" Asus Transformer and I love the pocketable size. It fits in a coat pocket to free my hands or stows in a glove box.
I use a Portenzo Book Cover case and it's great.
I love my 32GB N7 had it for over a week and it's a dream to use, add the Tablet Talk app that's available from the Play Store and you can use it as a fully functional phone (but you have to tether to phone over WiFi or Bluetooth, and calls are routed through the phone speaker/microphone).

Well SMS is one possible benefit. When you are laying on the couch surfing on your N7 and your phone is on the charger across the room... sucks to get up. I keep my phone stuff separate from my tablet stuff though, but I can see several cases where it would be useful.
Phone calls basically works with having a bluetooth headset and essentially using the tablet as a "remote" to answer/decline calls from your phone.
At least this is my understanding.
Regardless, this is still a great benefit for having paired an Android Phone/Tablet.

At this point, just get another Mini. Google is showing that they can't even be assed to support their own flagship devices, and continue shipping out updates with broken Bluetooth and WiFi. These are not the actions of a company who cares about their customers.

I don't know, I only use the app to text from as it's quicker than having to pick my phone up to reply to a text, and the bigger screen makers it easier to type than on the small keyboard of my Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S.

They've said that they will be releasing a fix for 4.2 before December. That it's in 3days. They would be insane to not care about customers and to say get an iPad because the nexus update has a few problems that they are working on is not helpful really.

They released 4.2.1 today, the update you are talking about, and it has fixed a whole bunch of NOTHING in regards to critical systems. Woohoo, I can set a birthday but I can't use my bluetooth devices, and if I try the screeching and popping and skipping make them worthless.
So excuse me, but I am a long time Nexus owner and Android enthusiast. The changes they have made to the BT stack were unwarranted and unneeded as of 4.1, so why did they do it? I would be out of a job if my change control process were this piss poor.
Return that crappy ipad mini and pocket that extra kroner on a nexus 7. One thing you might miss is the back camera which is useful for barcode scanning, pdf scanning and other apps like that (for actual photos, it's silly though)

I assume once we find a camera that's compatible with the software making it work it will provide a crude way of upgrading any tablets camera! Oh the possabilities!

I'm wandering if I take a replacement camera from let's say an ipad or even an android tab with a respectable camera could I connect this camera and either compile a driver or nick the one from an existing android tablet who`s camera I will steal and ( providing I can work out which pin goes where... ) install. Of coure its a bit ambitious as I have no idea how anything works software wise but have a lot of exprience in making electrical connections that shouldn't work.. work. anyone interested in finding this out with me? I assume once we find a camera that's compatible with the software making it work it will provide a crude way of upgrading any tablets camera! Oh the possabilities!
