Hello, i was hoping to get some advice with this choice i have.
I need a device to replace my old/dead 15" laptop. Bought years ago for £400, pretty weak AMD processor and integrated graphics i use it for browsing and entertainment purposes. Basically, facebook, news and watching films. It does rarely get used for work, mainly typing out a few documents and a quick spreadsheet if i am trying to work out some finances. Things i am confident polaris office can handle. I do also use the HDMI out when i want to play a film on a big TV, however usually standard def or occasionally 720p
I am in the military so i move about a lot! My current laptop last around 2 hours on a charge so i get very bored on an 18 hour flight as you might expect! I have a SGS II so i already have a nice catalogue of apps. So my question to you, owners of shiney eee pads now that the glaze of new ownership may have left some of you, do you think your device could replace a laptop for someone like me?
Can it output via HDMI port without making you tear your hair out?
How often do you have to reach for a windows device because your tablet/dock fails?
Does it power your external hard drives well enough?
If i bought one, it would be my only mobile device, is it up to functioning on its own?
Do the bugs ruin the experience?

But read the forum about the office ... some people don't like it ... and check out how to print with this baby ... I haven't a clue how, because I use Windows for that.
And don't worry too much about bugs ... I would be more worried about getting a TF without too much light bleeding in the display.

I bought my TF to replace a defunct laptop and would never go back to a laptop now. I originally bought an expensive laptop with alot of memory for playing games and as with most high end laptops it never got used for anything other than web, emails, documents and the occasional video. The ASUS can handle all this and much much more. Facebook is handled easily either through the FaceBook app or on the browser (I use the latest Opera Mobile which works very well), Pulse (free on the Market) handles News beautifully on a Tablet and Movies look very nice. I have never used it to watch high def movies but im sure it will play 720P fine as long as the movie is encoded correctly and the codec is supported on the Video Player. I use MoboPlayer which works alot better than the built in player and covers alot of codecs.
Trust me you wont look back and with the keyboard dock you can expect 15-20 hours battery life which would suit you very well on your long journeys. What I tend to do is use the tablet on its own until the battery gets low (around 9 hours normal use) and then plug the dock in to recharge the tablet. Once the screen is fully charged (takes round 3 hours while docked) you can then undock and continue or just use it while docked if you wish. The keyboard dock also makes a good stand if you want to put it on a desk and watch a movie.
The HDMI works perfectly with my Smasung 51inch Plasma. The first time I plugged it in it connected straight away and looks stunning. No problems at all although I think there are reports that new Panasonic TV's have problems but they may be isolated cases.
My tablet has only rebooted itself a few times and those times haven't been due the TF but to a custom kernel that had some bad settings. You have to remember that Honeycomb is still a VERY new operating system and there may be a few bugs but they will soon be ironed out as google are very good at updating Roms.
I have a 500GB external HardDrive (2.5inch with a single usb connector) and there is no problem at all with it being powered via the ASUS. You have to be docked as the USB connectors are only on the keyboard (so make sure you get one with the keyboard if you need this feature) but im sure you wont have any problems.
If you do get one (with the keyboard) then you wont miss your laptop at all if you are going to be using it for the things you mentioned. There is no laptop that can come close to the life of the TF and the screen is very clear and sharp which makes it ideal for movies and web browsing. The keyboard is very tactile and can hammer out documents very quickly and if you plug a usb mouse in you can even control it in the same way as your pc. A little tip, there is a button on the keyboard (top row, 4th in from left side) that turns the trackpad on and off which helps alot when you are docked and using your finger on the screen. My arm kept touching the trackpad making it do strange things and it took a while to figure out what was happening lol.

I bought this to replace my very old 15" powerbook G4, thats right, I said it....G4 hahaha. I knew that in no way was this a laptop replacement. I understood that this was more of a multimedia/entertainment device than anything else.
Purchasing this product with that in mind has was the best purchase I've made this year. However, if I bought this with the assumption that it would function the same as my laptop, I think I would have returned this a long time ago.
Surfing the web: Can't beat it. I used to get frustrated with the stock browser always crashing on me but I found Opera Mobile 11 and I've never looked back. Sometimes I do wish there was a full size browser for the tablet instead of mobile browswer but yeah, Opera gets the job done.....I know there is Maxathon or something that offers a full browser experience, but I've had issues with it so I'll stick to Opera.
Movies: At first I wanted to throw my tablet out the window but thanks to the XDA forums I found the means to convert my movies to MP4s. And with the update to 3.1, movies are near flawless. I do wish that the tablet could support all media files and play as smooth as my desktop but I only watch movies on the road. If I'm at home, I havea TV for that. It's acceptable.
Reading: eBooks are great, but PDFs are teh suck! The MyLibrary app is complete garbage. I've tried other apps but loading PDF magazines are always laggy so I just get pissed off and don't even bother.
Music: The speakers on this thing sucks.....get a nice pair of headphones.
Work: I've tried to use Polaris Office to do some spreadsheets but it was super troublesome. I guess if I got used to the way Android operated vs thinking of how Excel and Word works in Windows it might be ok. What I do is I just RDP into my Windows computer and work off the full version of Office.

I also take flights occasionally and as you are aware...a laptop just doesn't fit in a modern airline seat space!! there is no lap left...but the TF is perfect!

It never fails but I do use the laptop every day due to an app that I need on android that isn't ready for prime time...if it was...I'd never use the laptop.

the ONLY weakness that I still have is the Office app...it doesn't have cut/paste capability. Once that's worked out....I'll be happy.

I have a TF,a rooted Nook Color, a laptop and a desktop. LOL, my desktop system might as well a doorstop at this point I never use it. My laptop is a decent machine but the battery life is dismal compared to the TF or the rooted Nook. I work from home a lot,love sitting outside and also really appreciate how cool running my TF and it's dock ar, no sitting in the sun while holding awarm laptop!
There are some windows programs I need to use regularly, I bought Splashtop HD and simply connect to one of my computers when I need to access these programs. Another plus with Splashtop HD is that I can use it to stream Netflix from my computer to my TF, I love watching a movie while lying comfortably in my bed and the screen on the TF is simply lovely for this purpose.

I highly recommend the AKG K319, which have a fantastic sound, nearly like a big high-end home headphone, e.g. Beyerdynamic DT-880. And don't get shocked by the shown price ... just google a bit ... I only payed 25 Euros
I was astonished how good the TF sounds with this headphones though it doesn't have an equalizer built-in.
Oh btw ... the K319 have a nice hardcase and an air plane adapter in the package. If I would loose them I would buy them again. But be warned, they need to burn in for about 50 hours to develop it's full potential. So don't get disappointed, when you first plug them in.
These are by far the best mobile headphones below 200$, no joke.

The asus transformers with serial number B4O.... Have been plagued with screen issues, from what I hear as long as you get a transformer with B6O, you should have no such issues.

I just got mine yesterday from best buy and it was in fact B60 with 3.1 update already installed. From what I've experienced these things sell-out pretty quick (at least thats what best buy told me) so they're always getting new shipments.
There is another thread on here regarding t different models, though I don't think there's much difference (my mistake) . Mine isn't terrible in that I only notice it in the dark (lightbleed) but if you're not on a budget, I'd consider the Galaxy Tab 10.1 as they seem to have better quality control. Do you're research though, I haven't done any digging myself.

Maybe, but if the tab will be your only PC, I think the TF is currently the best choice ... maybe besides the Arconia Tab, which doesn't have light bleed issues.
Another choice would be waiting until fall, when the next models will be available ... the Archos 3G e.g. looks promising.
Hey guys I don't mean to highjack this thread or anything, but I am probably getting the tf in the near future and I was wondering where I should buy one and what place has a good warranty where if I got a defective one I could get it replaced easily. And a little side question, I can make/edit/print word documents from this right?

It has Polaris Office preinstalled. From what I read, it can open MS Office documents. But so far I didn't find any hints how to print with the TF or if any printer wil be compatible on the USB. I think the printing topic is worth a new thread.
I found THIS to print to network printers ... I fear, that's the only way.

Well for starters noone can give you an answer since you have given no indication as to where you live. If you want to get it from a shop then any large electrical retailer should give you good customer service if anything goes wrong. I cant comment about buying it online until I know what country you live in lol.
You can easily create and edit word documents using the included Polaris Office app. There is no default app to let you print but you can either use an app called PrinterShare (or similar from the market) or look into google cloud printing.
EDIT: Google cloud printing works extremely well. Just go *HERE* and install Google Chrome on your pc. Then enable Cloud Printing from Chrome and print a test page to make sure its set up using the email address that your Tablet is set up with. You then need to install an app which supports cloud printing such as PrinterShare or Cloud Print BETA and you are good to go. Tested this with both PrinterShare and Cloud Print BETA and both work fine.

Well I live in Pennsylvania, I have best buys, targets, blah blah... and for online, as far as I can tell amazon has the transformer for 400 which is the lowest. But idk how good there Warranty and easy there customer service is? Also I wanna make sure I get the newest model, which I understand to be the B60?

Amazon has very good customer service from what experience I have with them and is usually quite quick with replacements if anything goes wrong. Their warrany will be exactly the same as any other online retailer. The only problem with buying online is that you wont know what model you get until it arrives at your door.
If you really really want the B60 model then your best bet is to goto a store and ask to view the product in the box to make sure of the model. Some places may not oblige but most should. Saying that, I have the B40 model of tablet and have had absolutely no problems with it so far (touch wood).

i'm about to purchase a new tablet and i have issues deciding which tablet i want. i would like the ipad because it can run at least 95% of the apps in the app store. i like the iconia because it has built in hdmi port, usb port,external microsd,and a lot more features with in the os. but i'm afraid that most of the apps i want or need will either be not available or won't be compatible with honeycomb. Either or i like the way the acer looks and the price is cheaper than the ipad. i have an android phone Samsung Vibrant 4G and i'v had the iphone before...which is the reason why i'm debating on which tablet i want. i've seen youtube videos regarding the ipad vs the iconia but its not enough for me to make my decision. I much rather ask the experts and users of xda to get the final desicion. so what should it be?

So far, all android 2.x apps i've tried are working on android 3.x
The two problems are
* they are not necessarily compatible with the resolution of the tablets
* the app UI might have been designed for smartphone use (small screen, mobility)
Regarding the resolution issue, android 3.2 is fixing this by adding the new "compatibility zoom" feature (not tried yet, still waiting acer to release android 3.2 on the iconia )

I was in the fix like you when i was buying tablet, i opted for iconia but i am regretting now. Iconia is not at the fault but apps, cause not many apps are available for bigger screen.
That's why go for IPAD 2, it has so many more applications.

I've got both, and switch between them regularly. There are some things the iPad2 can do that the Acer cannot (some Citrix connectivity with my company), there are some things the iPad2 simply does better (WiFi reception, battery life). Then, there are places where it's a toss up. Then there are things like widgets and ability to control my user experience through settings, root applications, etc. that Acer delivers on. The SD card and USB ports are, of course, in Acer's favor.
On the whole, I find myself reaching for the Acer more often through the day, unless I know that the iPad is necessary, or if the Acer's battery is low. This, however, might be because I've owned an iPad (1 or 2) since early in the iPad's life (not the launch of 1, but close) and I've only had the Acer for a month, so there's a newness/novelty to it. The experimentation with ROMs, kernels, etc. also keeps the Acer more interesting from a tweaker's perspective, of course.
The Acer provides homescreens that are much more useful through their customization and dynamic screen content. The iPad gives an overall smoother interaction. Typing on onscreen keyboards goes to the iPad, I think, despite using SwiftKey, which offers word prediction, etc.
Screens are pretty similar in my uses, although the Acer is glossier(glare) and shows fingerprints more readily.
If I had to choose only one at this time, and money was not an issue, I'd probably stick with the iPad2.
Note, I use an Android phone, but I don't know that the integration is really better in one over another, using gmail and corporate accounts and calendars. In my situation, my corporate account did require the use of a third party exchange application due to some weird security issues. This may change if you were using an iPhone with iOS 5 coming with the iCloud system, who knows. But, if you had an iPhone, I would guess you'd already be heading to the Apple store.
i must say the acer changed my opinion of android tablets. Its fantastic! I bought mine second hand on craigs list. Well worth it.
After rooting the usb ports support all my usb drives, keyboards and anything else that ive tried. Thr battery life leaves something to be desired, but its still good enough.
Its my remote for xbmc, managing utorrent on my server and just putzing around on the web.
Im sold on the acer. Get the 16GB with the 100 dollar gift card and you will love it.
I also have groove ip installed and can make and receive phonecalls without having to find woorkarounds to make it work.
I have used ipads, just not enough to judge them. I did have a touch 4g but was never pleased with what it took to get it set up to do what this does.
I also love rooting and flashing different rom.
I have use of both via work, and have also used both for work and for home. They both have their strong points and weaknesses. I also use Citrix for access to work applications - multiple times per day - and I actually prefer the Iconia with 3.1 over the iPad 2 for this purpose.
IPad certainly has more apps, and some are phenomenally good value (including Apple's own ported apps like Garage Band). Some are mediocre, and quite a few are poor. In real life, however, unless you collect apps just for the number you own, most things can be done with either tablet.
The clincher for me is Steve Jobs personal aversion to Flash and Java. One of the main cloud-based professional apps I use is written in Flash. With the iPad2, my only work around that works (but very slowly) is to VPN into either the office Mac or one of the PC's. The Iconia runs it natively, quickly and effortlessly.
For entertainment, the Iconia won't easily run Netflix yet (it is possible via a hack only), but it effortlessly streams media from my home media server (Serviio on Ubuntu server, on an $70 Intel Atom board), including video, pictures and music. The iPad won't work with it (though it will with some other servers).
The Iconia scores hands down on connectivity. USB input/output. HDMI out without dongles. SD card expansion without dongles and with far les limitations on use. Bluetooth that will connect with stereo headphones, keyboards, mice and other devices while the iPad2 Bluetooth is deliberately crippled to not allow serial devices without jailbreaking and add-on apps from Cydia. That includes no normal Bluetooth GPS connectivity, and the iPad 2 doesn't have one built in (Iconia does).
Although I use an iMac much more than I use Windows, I find the reliance on iTunes for everything concerning interconnection really annoying (though there are ways to work around it, if you look hard). You even needed a PC with iTunes to wake up the darned iPad 2 when it arrived...
So it depends what you really want, and what you need. Personally, I'm finding that I carry the Iconia a lot more than the iPad2.

Ports isn't THAT big an issue cos u can get attachments that give u hdmi out etc on iPad 2.
If you want to do weird and crazy things, then Android.
If you are a 'normal' user (ie surf, read, tunes etc), then iPad by a million miles.
Much much much nicer experience on iPad2 for everyday use.
Working with my Acer Iconia since one week. Never want to miss a fully functional USB Port. You can do so much more than with ordinary Tablet PCs or the Ipad .

I disagree on the 'normal' usage being better on the ipad. Surfing without flash and the need to sync your media through itunes makes both a poor experience. At least poorer than with the iconia.

For those considering battery life : remember the iconia is almost 100€ cheaper and got a LOT more connectivity than the ipad 2. And I heard about Acer lowering the price soon.
The lack of flash player and the inability to sync media without itunes makes the ipad2 worst than the iconia for me.

IMO
If you want boring interface get an ipad
If you already spent a ton of money on apps through iTunes get a ipad
If you plan on using the web browser get an android (I remember the joy I experienced with my ipad when trying to browse to local business web pages and not being able to see anything)
If your not using iTunes to buy overpriced music get an android
If your business requires Skype calling maybe you should get an ipad. (Guess Skype figures android tablets don't want the support)
If you want to buy extra dongle to use USB devices you already own get an ipad (sorry the USB port is a big deal to me)
If your a normal user get an android more out of the box support by a million miles
If you want to video chat with family members that only have a computer and webcam get android atleast with gmail in the browser they won't have to buy only one type of computer(which is ten times easier to get going then having mom trying to install software when your not around to do it for her)
If you want hook your tablet up to the tv by only using a five dollar cable get android
If you might prefer a seven inch tablet get an android
If you want to mange files on your tablet with a computer then get an ipad (perhaps someone can inform me been awhile since I used an apple product are users allowed to delete music of phone\tablet without the use of iTunes)
If you love excel spreadsheet and want that kind of experience get something you use can use iTunes for
If your already on XDA and know your way around adb and stuff get an android
If you want reply on message boards and claim that android are only good for doing crazy weird things then get an ipad
All and all the two major platforms are becoming more the same anywho. Android just meet all my minimum requirements where the ipad did not
In the end you need to decide for your self if your work has requirements well I say make them buy you whatever they require. I myself have been burnt by apple to many times and all apple users I personally know act like asshats about their device(most of the time getting excited about features already available on other platforms)

If you plan on using the web browser get an android (I remember the joy I experienced with my ipad when trying to browse to local business web pages and not being able to see anything)
If your not using iTunes to buy overpriced music get an android
If your business requires Skype calling maybe you should get an ipad. (Guess Skype figures android tablets don't want the support)
If you want to buy extra dongle to use USB devices you already own get an ipad (sorry the USB port is a big deal to me)
If your a normal user get an android more out of the box support by a million miles
If you want to video chat with family members that only have a computer and webcam get android atleast with gmail in the browser they won't have to buy only one type of computer(which is ten times easier to get going then having mom trying to install software when your not around to do it for her)
If you want hook your tablet up to the tv by only using a five dollar cable get android
If you might prefer a seven inch tablet get an android
If you want to mange files on your tablet with a computer then get an ipad (perhaps someone can inform me been awhile since I used an apple product are users allowed to delete music of phone\tablet without the use of iTunes)
If you love excel spreadsheet and want that kind of experience get something you use can use iTunes for
If your already on XDA and know your way around adb and stuff get an android
If you want reply on message boards and claim that android are only good for doing crazy weird things then get an ipad
All and all the two major platforms are becoming more the same anywho. Android just meet all my minimum requirements where the ipad did not
In the end you need to decide for your self if your work has requirements well I say make them buy you whatever they require. I myself have been burnt by apple to many times and all apple users I personally know act like asshats about their device(most of the time getting excited about features already available on other platforms)

I'm glad you mentioned the weight, I wanted the ipad 2 initialy, especially after trying one for a few days - I was comfortable with ios, since I have an iphone. Also you can hack them like any other device, plus plenty of apps.
However, I bought an Iconia, because of connectivity, expansion, Flash, and price, and I was keen to try Android, now that it has matured somewhat.
I love the Iconia for all the reasons I just mentioned, but I am shocked by its weight, I know there is only 165g difference, but it just feels really heavy, something I never even thought about with the ipad, so I did'nt take it into consideration when choosing a pad.
Bottom line is, if you are going to use it in your hands all the time, get an ipad, if its going to be used on its stand, and/or the weight does'nt bother you, definately get an Iconia

The TF101 is a great device! I've had it almost as long as it's been out and I still love it. If you are having a hard time finding a use for it then you either didn't really need a tablet in the first place or are not looking at its full potential. I use mine for everything, it has totally replaced my laptop. Android has tons of productivity and office apps, apps for sharing documents and other work, loads of games, eBook reading apps, etc., etc.
Any device can be written off as not necessary, after all people can get along just fine with no electronic devices at all (I used to work and live in a wilderness training camp myself). The key to revitalizing the shine on any tablet is to start using it for everyday things and to try changing the look and feel. Try doing something on it that you would normally do on a laptop or PC, after the initial shift in feel you may find that you like the tablet more. You could also try a new ROM to change the look, feel, and performance. If all of this seems like too much work then maybe you should just sell it and move on...tablets are not the answer for everyone.

I'm not at all saying this to mock you, I purchased a TF101 myself and have the dock too. I use the tablet for Netflix, casual news reading and a little bit of playing games like Machinarium and Rayman Jungle Run. I intended to use it for Skype as well, but the mic volume was always too low so I gave up on that and went back to my laptop for Skype.
My three year old son uses the tablet a lot more than I do for watching videos and playing games in Zoodles Kid Mode.
The dock I use for one thing and one thing only: backup battery when traveling - what a waste of money! (for me)
I like having a tablet even though I'm far from a heavy user and I like my TF101. That said, I'm tempted to get a Nexus 7 and let the Transformer call it a day.
It's convenient, small, and can do everything... well almost. I mostly use it at work to connect to switches, serial ports, etc. That way I don't have to carry the macbook around. Then at home it becomes a remove for my TV device, a portable crappy-game station, a small OGT TV for streaming from the SAN, etc. There's so many uses!

I love my TF101. Best part is the "instant on" feature. When I need to quickly check something quickly on the Internet without waiting for my laptop or desktop to boot.
How about buying a Bluetooth OBD II adapter (less than $20 on Amazon) buy the app "Torque" and for $25.00 you have an excellent OBD2 diagnostic tool. I have one and it works great!

I just use my transformer to output video to my TV. Other than that, not many uses. Used to use it a lot more when I was using my Nexus S.
Now that my phone is more superior (in specs) to my Transformer, I use it a lot less and less.
Would I get another tablet? Probably not because it doesn't fit my needs. For some people, it fits into theirs. For me, I use my desktop a lot so a tablet doesn't necessarily replace anything for me. I find some uses for it when I'm reading on the go though, although this semester it wasn't needed as much--others it was more handy.
Just kind of hard to find the balance between tablet and phone usages, in my opinion.
Was extremely excited to flash ROMs and all that on my TF101, but now that the community isn't as active (most has shifted to other devices) this has gone downhill.

I only really use mine for bedtime surfing, youtube and occasionally Music. I like playing with different ROMs and now I'm trying to get Plasma Active (Ubuntu.... proper Linux) on it.
I use mine for a multitude of things, from inventory control, web surfing, submitting customer orders, receiving inventory, word processing, spread sheets, games, and more often then not when I am out camping. I go camping A LOT in summer here in Alaska, so it is a lot easier to tote around the TF101 then it is to tote around my 17" Toshiba laptop.
My tf also serves as my GPS in the car when I'm on the road visiting customers. Tethered to my phone just for the web connectivity since I did not get the 3G version. Honestly the TF has changed the way that I use computers and my work. Yes the "instant on" feature is very nice. But the portability and feature rich ability is the sole reason I wanted one.
Let's see: internet, email, netflix, crackle, remote into home pc and most importantly as a head unit in my truck, lol! Since it is my head unit, I use it almost everyday.

That is a genious idea!! So you plan to integrate a standard Android tablet into a car so that the front passengers can listen to music, make play lists play movies, use Google Maps based GPS (obviously this would only work for SIM card enabled tablets). I cant think of any other uses unless you really wanted to make serious modifications to the car.
Seriously, if I were you I would delete this thread until your idea has a patent or two because this idea is gold dust.

Yes. That is what i want to do.
Basically, i developed a board and it works. Now, im thinking new features and going to complete the work. One day it may come as an open design for Android fans.
Internet on the way is possible as 3G connection(USB dongle) is ready. Google street view is an interesting app for driving.
# feature is a quality wifi antenna.. reasoning being if its parked near my house it can connect and sync media, etc. External USB ports and Host mode.
Outside of that it all really falls on software I think. One would be the ability to mount MTP devices, and find media on them to play.
I have been thinking about this for years, and originally I was just going to use a browser based UI on top of a very minimalistic linux install. At this point just a tablet minus the form factor and some of the performance (has to be snappy but no need to play angry birds at 200fps), for a bit less $ could make a killer head unit.
I love the idea of android in the car. But don't waste your time re-inventing the wheel, essentially building a custom tablet that will surely be out of date(both in hardware and in software) long before the product makes it out the door.
Compared to technology, cars last forever. *The only way to keep car electronics from feeling dated by the time the car pulls out of the lot is to have a "Dumb" car which can seamlessly integrate with user-replaceable off-the-shelf electronics.
Focus your resources on creating a device that does nothing other than act as an interface between an off-the-shelf tablet and the car. Then all that is left is a one-size-fits all frame for the console that permits you to drop in any (or a wide range) tablet the user wants. Inside the frame you could provide either both power & data over USB or power over usb and data/control over Bluetooth. Spend all of your effort in making the interface compatible with as many makes / models of cars as possible and working out how to get as much data and control over the car as possible. Don't waste your time on anything else..
Make this data/control available via a openly published API and let other developers build apps to display/use/control things and let Samsung/Asus/Apple/whoever build the actual tablets.
This approach is best for everyone. Less work for you on so many levels. And for customers it is great because it is future proof. In a 5 years (or 5 months) all you have to do to upgrade to the latest and greatest hardware is stop by best buy and pick out a tablet.

I agree that is the hard part. Unfortunately that hard part cannot be avoided, weather you use an off the shelf tablet or build your own - it still has to interface with the car.
Really the ones who should be providing that open interface is the car manufactures. But they will never do it. They want to charge you $10,000 for an upgraded electronics package and then rely on those electronics feeling dated after 3 years to persuade people into buying a whole new car. How can they do any of that if it was easy to upgrade/replace the built in electronics for the cost of a cheep tablet.
The good news for you is because of the overpriced nature of manufacturers options if done right(sufficient polish and access to sufficient data and control over the car) you should be able to sell your interface device for big $$$. If the manufactures electronics option costs $10,000 and people are willing to pay for that, why would they not be willing to forgo the manufactures package pay twice that much or more for an aftermarket one that will never get old. Or better yet, imagine how much it is worth to someone considering spending buying a whole new car because their current car feels old.

There are some good voice control apps in google play. Hardware should link to an internal or external mic for the apps.
Here I put an external one for better performance.

Your early adopters would definitely be those who are already putting in custom stereos. The main thing is that you want quality audio connections via RCA connectors, and avoid ground-loop noise like the plague. Even if what you created was just a a Bluetooth transceiver in the trunk...

It works but you may need root for certain things although I don't think a mouse would work as it is a touch device.

A lot of apps have been improved and look better than before but not all, although I haven't found any apps that look horrendous.

I find the battery is awesome, also a custom kernel/ROM can have a big impact on it.

I use the poetic slimline case, there have been some issues with it not fitting properly but mine is fine, not sure about docks/stands

I use the usb otg cable and a four port usb hub. Keyboard and mouse are just plug and play. Which is the case for all the android devices I've owned. I've been rooted since the moment I bought it so I'm not sure if you need root for thumb drives.

I personally love the device. I had a Asus Tf101 before and this is a far better product.

The apps are improving quite well and even the few non tablet apps that I use don't look horrible. Not sure if you can see the online play store in your location but if you can there is a tablet filter that can give you a better idea of the available apps.

For the most part I use my at home after work. I find that it can easily last me three days.

I have the iblason black faux leather case and the brown suede bear motion case off of Amazon. I'm finding now this i prefer the iblason which is about 18.00 on amazon.

I personally recommend it, based on it`s specs, it`s still the best bang for the buck. But it also greatly depend on your needs from a tablet device.

Given the high resolution screen, yes some app do look blurry or pixelated if not optimized for tablet. For me, i can live with it, we will get more and more tablet optimized apps for sure.

unfortunately no stand or dock at the moment from google. but the cases do make it stand. Just get a case that suit your needs.

The stock unrooted firmware doesn't mount usb thumb drives when connected with OTG. The "Nexus Media Importer" app from the play store provides a smooth workaround for that, well worth the 3 or 4 USD I paid for it.

You may wish to consider an Asus TF700. For example, I have the integrated keyboard, an USB non-powered hub, a laser printer (hooked to the USB hub), Bluetooth speaker (powered by the hub), multiple USB hard storage devices (for moving large volumes of data such as movies between devices), a microhd 32 GB card (up to 128 GB possible), in addition to a regular SD card. Shortly I will add an USB ethernet adapter for additional speed when using it at my desk. All of this is with the stock configuration and is well integrated into the tablet experience. The TF700 may not be as fast as the Nexus 10- but I have found the speed very good with the optimal mix of apps. My impression is that the TF700 is a more versatile device if you need multiple storage/connectivity options ala a netbook and find the Android OS suitable for your needs.

When rooted, you can use the free StickMount app.
Some custom roms may mount USB sticks for you automatically, but I haven't experimented with this.
Dontvbe worried about software ... There are very inteligent developers outhere that work for this device . eventualy all the software problems will be resolved . be worried about the problematic hardware side and how to be able to return the product more faster process problems free .

I had problems with Stickmount (can't recall what now). I've been using 'USB OTG Helper' which is a great app. As for how phone apps look: it's not that most of them look bad; they're just not optimized to take advantage of the extra screen real estate. But I'm finding more and more of my favorite apps have a separate tablet version, or install a tablet-optimized one if a tablet is detected.
I also recommend the Moko Slim-Fit leather case (Amazon). Very well made.

The reason why I'm not considering the transformer is because it isn't running stock Android. And I'm not sure how the dev community is for it. Plus it's almost a year old and a new ones coming out soon, I don't know if I can wait.

The Asus Transformer series is comparatively minimalist with regards to Android customization versus other brands- though bloatware is an issue. There is quite a bit of 3rd party developer support. TF Android stock and custom updates have been prompt- though I am encouraged that Asus was cautious with 4.2. Of course, newer models will offer better performance- and where the need is not critical- it might be better to wait. Again, the hybrid market seems to be in rapid transition and the Transformer series is hardly the only option- for example, Windows 8 hybrids from Asus, Lenovo and others. I only made the suggestion because you focused on expandability- not a core strength of the Nexus 10. But the Nexus 10 has a lot of other strengths- though it to will probably have a faster replacement or hardware refresh soon...

Sorry for re-opening an old thread, but it seemed relevant to my situation.
Hi guys, finally decided to take the plunge and shell out for a Nexus 10. This will be my first tablet purchase, so naturally I want it to go as smoothly as possible.
Although a lot of what I've read from purchasers here seem to suggest it's anything but a smooth process with Google. I've terrified myself half to death with some of the stories here. I should probably also mention that I've never had to RMA any device before, but I'm almost fully committed to the fact that I'll have to with this, after all I've read about it.
So. What are the main problems are that people have experienced, which required RMAs and are they still present in the newer batches, seeing as it's almost 6mths old now?
I've looked around these forums for the past half week and found what I believe to be a fairly conclusive list and their possible resolutions. Is there anything else beyond this list I should be watching out for?
RMA for sure
- battery issues - less than 6hrs
- faulty usb/hdmi socket
- constant wifi drop
- speakers buzz
- no sound via hdmi
- crap stuck under screen
- loose to touch/clicky camera lens
- light bleeding (only RMA if excessive)
SOFTWARE UPDATE
- constant restarts with stock rom
BEARABLE WITH CASE
- creaky back cover
Also, is it easier to return to Google or Samsung should I need to RMA?

Damn I'm lucky. Not one problem with my nexus 7 well the wife's now that I went and got a 10. And not a problem with my 10. And I picked my 10 up from a guy on craigslist for 375 for a 32gb.

Well mine just arrived 20 minutes ago. So far none of the issues I've seen around these forums. No creaky back. No creaky camera lens. No crap under the screen. It's on charge at the moment, so I can't check the other things like light bleed etc.
Oh and for reference it's an R32D model if that helps anyone. I'm in the UK too, for anyone questioning if UK is getting new or old stock.
