Hello, I've been tablet shopping and i found an A500 for $300 refurb. Best deal i can find around.
I want to buy it, but i'd like to ask a few questions first.
First off. It advertises as a Honeycomb tablet. Will there be an OTA ICS update waiting for me when i set it up?
If so, How is ICS on this device? Is it buggy? does everything work? Or will i be constantly rooting/roming to get it to work properly?
If i have to root/rom, How is it? Easy? difficult? oneclick? I know my phone was a pain, but another one i did was a snap. Wanted to know how easy it is to rom this device?
How is video playback? One of the main things i wish to do is play movies/videos. mainly; Netflix, Streaming, and .avi and mp4's. How is playback? I can't stand choppy video or audio-lag. So this is pretty important to me.
Also, Some basic performance reviews would be great. not the main purpose of this thread, but hey, any information is helpful.
I was looking between this and the EeePad transformer. Basically within $20 of eachother.
Thank you.

depending where you live you will most likely have ics waiting for you most places have it now ics runs nicely hadn't had any bugs with it so far the video playback is great the only time it starts to lag for me is when 1080p is being streamed to a TV ......rooting and romming is easy enough after root flashing custom roms is about 3 clicks from cmw lol rooting i cant say now i mine was rooted before ics but there's lots of tutorials performance wise it can be over clocked to about 1.5ghz but even not over clocked i hadn't found a game that will make it lag yet even N.O.V.A 3 with its online multi player and sweet graphics xD
Its not all amazing though there are some problems
1.some tablets don't have the best wifi saying even in the same room as the router they get one block of signal i think to be an old Gen problem though....i have surprisingly great wifi connection????
2.The Video recording is TERRIBLE on honeycomb not the video but the sound is all congested and gross, but if you do update it there has been BIG improvements with ics
3.does not like Bluetooth headsets with a mic input it will pair but not connect with most of them ,but some still work xD...
One more thing there is also built in GPS not needing wifi and great for gaming and modding so i think...external 3g Hawaii usb adapter have had success working micro sd works up to 64gb and external hard rive up to 2tb xD good luck hope this helped

You can beat that price easily. The last one I bought was auction style and got it for $210 shipped. It was the 8gb version. The 16gb can be had for a little more than that if you don't mind playing the auction game. Personally, I'd never pay more than $250 shipped for a refurb. I expect the refurbs to get to the ~$200 price point by the end of the summer.

As far as the rest... What Gears said.
Thank you both for the replies.
The WiFi connection concerns me a bit. But not a deal-breaker for sure.
Glad to hear video playback is good. As that's most likely going to be my main use of this tablet.
I don't use bluetooth headsets, so not too worried about that.
As for beating the price. Here in Canada, That's literally the best price i could find. Newegg.ca has it for $268. so after tax/fees, it's $301.
I'm not a fan of buying used electronics off ebay. Too much risk. and a boat load of hassle with returns/paypal. well, almost all are final sales. And i don't want to get screwed.
At least with sites such as newegg i get a warranty.
Even with that being said. I used your link and found one on ebay. Currently winning at $122. But with 6-days left. I doubt it will be a good deal. my max is $225, so we'll see how long that lasts.

FYI & I don't know if they are available in Canada, but a friend & I each picked up refurbished a500s from the referenced "Official Acer Store" on eBay. They came with a 90 day warranty. It was about 4 months ago and they were $267US then. Upon receipt both appeared to be brand new. Mine has had absolutlely no issues. My friend's developed a couple of horizontal colored lines after about 3 weeks. The Acer Store folks quickly arranged for a prepaid return and sent him another immaculate appearing unit in about a week. It has been flawless. None of the 3 units had any difficulty with Timmy Dean's v3.2.1, HC downgrade , the ICS OTA, or bootloader or ROM mods. Whatever you decide, goodluck. The a500 is a super piece of hardware and these forums are a goldmine of information and hours of reading pleasure!
I bought mine around valentines day off eBay for $280 refurbished, a 16gb version. Got the square trade warranty for $40. The tablet was fine for about a week and then my screen started coming up along the top/bottom edges. So I shipped it back. The second one has had no problem. I rooted, installed recovery, custom rom, and backed up on the first one. When my 2nd tablet came I was able to just root, install recovery and recover from my SD backup with no problem.
I love this tablet! Personally, I choose it over the Asus ones that were out at the time I got mine. From what I've heard, the Asus and other tablets don't allow a constant HDMI out like the Acer. They only utilize it when an app calls it. That could have been a stock rom issue, but even then if u have a newer tf101 u can't unlock it like its older model. As stated above, all games run flawlessly. I can play Shadow Gun then load up GTA3 and switch between the two without either game lagging.
You'll be happy with your purchase after the first minute of playing with the Iconia.

WiFi works quite well under Gentoo for me. On Honeycomb, it was sightly buggy at times. The changes in ICS seem to have gotten rid of this issue, for me at least.

Agreed i havnt had any wifi issues at all since ics
what specifically do you want to do with a tablet? That should help narrow your search , do you need root? do you need custom roms or is the stock fine? are you into testing? If your squeamish about "tech" stuff ,root /rom wont be your thing ,the stock roms offer alot in these tabs ,just having ICS doesnt ensure you anything over HC , most people have this problem about worrying about updates , getting antsy over it , if you go custom rom it all depends on what your comfortable with , you might change the rom daily ,or you might be totally satisfied ,I have a Windows phone 7 that has a custom rom I installed back in december , havent changed a thing since , On my Acer I couldnt tell where I was a week ago ,everything gets changed between a few days to a week !
Read the dev section , anything by skrillax ,civato ,vache, blkthdr (thor if you can find it) and Moscow desire to name a few and you'll be on the right track and as civato says "dont be a chicken, just do it" otherwise stay stock and wait for Acer............

Well I read so many threads about it but it got complicated after the 4th sentence and I don't understand a thing.
I have 1080p LG HDTV 37LD420-ZA bought in 2010. I have no idea about Miracast, what it is or do I have it. Can I even set up this stream or?
Thanks

Holy crap I swear the lack of information on miracast will be its demise. Its seriously pathetic that one can't even simply search for 'how to use miracast' and find simple answers. Miracast is seriously the equivalent to a unicorn at this point.
Somebody PLEASE prove me wrong. Its my most anticipated feature of 4.2.
What you just said is completely right. I tried many sources but nothing :/

Bubble up player is great to stream from the tablet..
I use it because you can pick the device where the files are at. Say on a network computer share folder. Stream them thru the tablet to a Tv on the same network..
You can also select where the video is rendered .. Local ON THE SHARE Device or on the ..
MY Samsung shows up as a DLNA /Media device on all my networked devices . Its great feature..
YOU just have to play with the settings to find what works best with your tv and network shares.. There is also a SAMSUNG ALL SHARE App and program for windows pcs. that does NOT Require a samsung device..
As far as miracast who knows if or when....
The thing is, I don't want just DLNA playing to another device/computer/television. I want mirroring. I want exactly what Miracast is supposed to give me. And even now if you Google how to use Miracast you will find *nothing* about actually *how* to use it. You see a whole bunch of hype about people saying how it's going to beat AirPlay and how it's the best thing since sliced bread -- yet nobody has actually used it.
It's appalling how biased people can be without any evidence of the feature working (short of a video given to us by the friggin manufacturer). I feel like I purchased an iDevice. This feature is a ghost.
Exactly, feels like there are more Andro Sheep than iSheep. For now, 4.2 only brought amazing Bluetooth-NFC connectivity. As well as some UI stuff which there are plenty of custom on Android.

What good is it without dongles easily Googlingable? I G+'d a collection of certified devices a while before 4.2. Ain't been able to find a one. And Samsung's AllShare Hub thing wasn't one of them.

Well I, for one, wouldn't even be connecting it to a TV. My home theater PC, however, should easily be able to have some sort of software running on it that would be able to receive the signal. The problem is that the functionality is only half-baked at this time no matter where you look.
And without any device currently on the market, how can people swear by it?
Before we all start a witch hunt, remember miracast is still in development. You can't have something that hasn't had an official release yet.
Android Central has had a few articles on it, so far there are no official streaming devices for it (although some companies have claimed their upcoming streaming devices will support it).

Our best hope is that Google enables Miracast in a future update, and that compliant Miracast devices are released. I'm not holding my breath, since I would have thought that they would have included it with the 4.2 update if they planned on including it at all. I could be wrong of course. It's still early days with Miracast. Maybe it can be enabled via custom ROMs.
It would have been awesome to be able to stream games to my TV. Along with a bluetooth connected PS3 controller it really could have been an awesome experience.

Lazy, bad reporting.
They don't mention the 7 in the article, just the 10 and 4. I don't mind living without mirroring (my phone has MHL, if I ever bother to buy the adapter), but the wireless mirroring was a selling point on this tablet for me, even if I have to go custom to enable it.
As a filmmaking student, the capability to control and mirror screens on, say, a movie set, or a classroom, without plugging everything up just so, sounds pretty sweet. And I'm personally just tired of collecting single-use cables and adapters.
Patience, however, is a virtue, and I am willing to wait for Google to get off their asses once the mob realizes the shortchanges they're giving us. -Ara

What I don't understand is why did they hype it so much? From what I understood, no ones TV even supports this yet. Am I supposed to buy a new TV for this feature?
And I also don't understand, how is N7 not mentioned in those articles? Official Miracast video says that this is going to be enabled for NVIDIA Tegra 3 devices. Only N7 has Tegra 3, N4 and N10 both have different stuff inside.
This thing lacks so much information.

Yeah, prob a mistake to hype it so much. I mean, wait until the ecosystem is ready. Airplay has been out for so long it seems. Get off your asses, Google!

Does anyone with a Tab 4 have HDMI out working and if so which cable/adapter are you using?
I have ordered a cheap ebay cable for a Tab 3 8.0/10.1 that is supposed to have the Samsung 11 pin MLH usb plug. Does the Tab 4 use the same 11 pin jack as the Tab 3? I also saw a post here about screen mirroring for the 7.0 but nobody answered....the specs for both the Tab 3 7 and Tab 4 7 on the Samsung site show NO screen mirroring, only 8.0 and 10.1. That fact alone leads me to believe the Tab 3 cable will work.

I tried it with a monoprice adapter and it did not work, I did not spend too much time messing with it though,
I think the screen mirroring built in is via DLNA to a Smart TV or other DLNA receiver.

The specs say wired HDMI also so I am hoping the Tab 3 cable works. Is your adaper 5 pin or 11 pin, powered or unpowered. From what I have been reading the cable MUST be plugged in to USB power in addition to the tab for it to work. This is the one I have on order.

Yeah my adapter is powered but I did not have it plugged into USB. I'll try it again.
So does the Tab 4 (specificly the 8.0) support HDMI out? I notice that the US website and Best Buy mentions HDMI, but the canadian samsung website doesn't mention it.
The MLH cable I got from China does NOT work. I do have hope for the future. There are no HDMI adapters available from Samsung at this time even though they say wired HDMI is supported with an adapter that they have not made available yet! I believe the hardware support is there but it is not implemented in the TouchWiz software.

Hi I tried several adapters ordered by Amazon including this one Samsung ET-H10FAUWEGWW but no chance of getting HDMI a signal out.
Therefore I contacted Samsung using the Smart Tutor app of samsung and unfortunately after remote examining the device, they confirmed that MHL is NOT supported by this device. However this might apply only to the European versions.
So what, now I am so disappointed?! Does anybody know if Samsung maybe deactivated this feature in their ROMs, if so maybe we could get
HDMI out with a custom ROM in the future.
kind regards

Shawn: Hi, thanks for reaching out to Samsung pre sales support. We appreciate your interest in Samsung products. How may I assist you today?
Visitor: I am wondering which of the tablets support HDMI output
Shawn: I understand that you are looking for the TVs that support HDMI output. Certainly, I will help you with the information.
Visitor: Not tvs that support HDMI, but Tables, such as the galaxy tab 4 10.1
Visitor: i mean tablets
Shawn: Sorry for the mis-communication.
Visitor: no problem
Shawn: You could use the HDMI adapter with Tab 4 10.1.
Visitor: Which adapter? None of the adapters that i have found say they specifically support that model. Plus, as I I trying to decide twich model (7, 8, or 10 inch, I am not able to find out which models support HDMI, and the adapter that is required
Shawn: Please check the below link for compatible devices that support the HDMI adapter which is used to connect the Tab to the TV.
Shawn: go to Samsung dot com /us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/ET-H10FAUWEGUJ-compatible
Shawn: Are you able to access the above link?
Visitor: Yes. If it states that it is compatible with the tab 3, does that mean it is also compatible with the tab 4? The tab 4 is not listed.
Shawn: Tab 4 has been recently released. Hence, it isn't listed under the compatible devices. It should also support the adapter.
Visitor: ok, thanks
Shawn: You're welcome. Is there anything else that I can assist you with?
Visitor: No, that is all, thanks again

You have to be careful in choosing an adapter for these. The following one did NOT work for my tab 4 10.1:
Go to amazon dot com/gp/product/B00ESM3Q7K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
But this one specifically says it does, and comments seem to confirm it:
Go to amazon com/gp/product/B00KGP5SEC/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have one on order, and I will post my results when I get it and try it.
Eric
I wish you luck with the second cable you mentioned, but I read all 24 pages of reviews for it and the Tab 4 is not mentioned as working in any review. Half the reviews say it doesn't even work with the devices listed!
Most CS staff have very little technical knowledge. I would not put one bit of faith in a CS rep saying, oh it's not listed in the adapter specs but it should work...lol.
I would lay odds that wired HDMI out is not implemented in the kernel we have now. There are a few reports here that people lost wired HDMI out on Tab 3 after the Kit Kat update.
Well, I would think that the tab 4 would be supported as the tab 3 was, but that is why I am getting the cheap adapter rather than the official Samsung one (that one is around $75 on Amazon, but $35-$39 elsewhere). Having been in IT, I have found that most of the problems that people have are self induced, i.e. they did not read the instructions, or took shortcuts. It is worth noting that there seems to be two Samsung MHL adapters, one for the phones and one for the tablets. I do not know why they would do that, it does not make sense to me, as it causes too much confusion.
Eric
Samsung has a history of changing cables and adapters for various devices as this page explains better than most.
http://blog.clove.co.uk/2013/03/28/which-mhl-cable-should-i-buy/
I figure that they want to sell some $100 AllShare Cast dongles before they introduce an new hardware keyed 11 pin micro USB adapter!
I can confirm that my Canadian Tab 4 8.0 has the Samsung 11 pin micro USB jack.
I tried again after reading the reviews of that cable.....reboot both devices...powered from Tab 4 power wart....changed HDMI inputs on TV....screen mirroring on/off......NADA.....
Well, the Tab 4 does not support MHL. At the moment anyway. My 10.1 does have the 11 pin connector, AFAICT, but I get no results when plugging a cable in. BTW macbroom, my last post was not directed at you, just those who buy something and don't read the directions.
Eric
I recently purchased a AUVIO MHL adapter ( male micro USB to female HDMI) for my Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 (sm-t530nu). It uses a external power supply and also included the Samsung 11 pin adapter. I had read on a website that it does support MHL so I didn't think it would be an issue. However, it did NOT work and I tried with and without the adapter. After some browsing I found a miracast/allshare dongle on amazon for 22$ with free shipping and it works like a charm for the screen mirroring. I did notice while browsing that best buy had a "accessory kit" for the tab 4 10.1 that included a wall/car charger, OTG cable, and a MHL adapter. It was a dongle that plugged into your TV HDMI port and had a USB port that you connected the tab 4s charger to. So maybe it does support it and they just made changes to the connectors pins. It may have just been a mislabeled product also, who knows.
HDMI for Tab 4s
I, too have been attempting to get my new Tab 4 10.1 to display via HDMI. And, like others, have had less than helpful information from Samsung's CSRs.
The setup I use with my Samsung S5 phone doesn't seem to work for my tablet, regardless of the order in which I hook everything up
I read elsewhere that the issue was related to the 5-pin vs. 11-pin connection, but adding an adapter for that in the mix didn't work either.
I'm not familiar with the Miracast/Allshare dongle - but that plugs into the TV, right? I had hoped to be able to display movies to a TV while on vacation, so won't know what type of TV (or associated ports) might be available...
I've found this EEEKit which is listed for the Tab 4 (bestbuy dot com/site/eeekit-bundle-3-in-1-for-samsung-galaxy-tab-4-10-1-t530mhl-to-hdmi-cable-otg-cable-sync-cable/1311158404.p?id=mp1311158404&skuId=1311158404&st=eeekit%20hdmi%20%22tab%204%22&cp=1&lp=1#tab=buyingOptions ) but no comments or reviews yet.
So, does this Tab 4 go back to the store?
As a side note: Does anyone else find that a tablet released several months ago is still considered "too new" to have accessories? Especially with a feature (HDMI and screen mirroring) that isn't new? Geesh!

As much as I hate to say it, the new Tab 4 is going back to the store! I spent some time at Best Buy with their in-store Samsung rep, who made calls to *SOMEWHERE* to verify that the Tab 4 IS NOT COMPATIBLE with MHL connections. He tells me, the only way to disply your Tab screen on a TV is through AllShare Cast. Of course, he was willing to sell me their $65 connector! Since I've already purchased MHL adapters to use with my phones, I really don't want to invest in something else for the Tab. Just not that important.
Don't forget that the Allshare Cast dongle checks the flash counter and other things and thus will not work on a rooted Tab 4 or any other device. Sadly nobody has figured out how to patch out the check yet despite it being a problem for quite a while.

Ohh okay, you mean that Knox nonsense. No, sorry I didn't understand what you mean't by that. Sorry ive only owned a samsung for a few weeks. Ive only had a Atrix HD so im use to flashing until my hearts content with no repercussion. However, Towelroot doesn't change the counter on the TAB 4 so simply rooting shouldn't be a problem if done correct. That's pathetic however, they really take away someone's ability to cast their screen because they enjoy modding/ flashing their devices? Terrible road to choose for a company with such nice devices.
Well, the good thing is that Chromecast does work on the Tab 4's. The bad news is that screen mirroring is in beta, and only supported on a few devices, officially. If you search for 'Enable Mirroring from any device', you will fine a thread on how to mirror from almost any unit via chromecast. Even though it is beta, it works on my Tab 4.

Hi ppl.
I was talking with samsung support, they said that i can connect grand 2 to my hdmi tv. When i got the hdmi adapter, it didn't work. I must say its not a samsung original but still it didnt do the trick.
So my question is if anybody here ever tried or know if it can be done?

thanks anyways
the funny part is that i had a look at gsmarena webpage, looking on grand 2 specs and there it says that no support for MHL, which is the adapter name, and samsung support here claim that it is possible and the device support MHL so who is correct i can't really tell. all i know im confused.
the original samsung adapter here is sold around $30 and after spending already around the same amount for adapter that dont work, i wish someone can shed a light on this issue.
haha well what i think is that what ever happens samsung is ganna say yes we support this and that and that and if you ask about lollipop update they be like if an update is issued you will get notification haha well every body knows that so why cant you just tell whether lollipop is going to be launched for g2 or not so you cant 100% trust samsung so i will go with the gsmarena
Hello All,
I recently bought a Tab 4 8.0 (T-337A). I just wanted to know does MHL work with this? Or Miracast would be a better option?
I also have a Note 5. So an all round performer would be preferred. But the main goal is to connect the Tab 4 to the TV.

Ive been personally using chromecast and its good, havent found anything bad about it, my best 35$ ive spent you can put your tv show etc on chromecast and shut down tablet and watch it.
But i heard there are limited apps. And with Miracast you can just about do anything. For $20 more, you can get a lot more out of it isn't it?

There is also option to show real time device using but on my phone kt just crashed and rebooted phone, havent tried on tablet. It was beta test of it so google is developing real time streaming to tv. Also ive heard about miracast that it has pretty noticeable delay. Ive used chrome remote control and it has no delay between my PC and tablet, so i belive that google can make chromecast faster than miracast. At this moment miracast is better but it might change when update comes official and not a test.
Ok Cool! Thanks for the inputs!

afaik the tab4 is not mhl capable.
I think 10.1 is MHL compatible. But have not been able to find anything concrete about the 8.0. That is why i asked before getting anything.
