I've been searching for a way to get usb mass storage enabled in Zenfone 3 but most of it through an app. Since it's an app I'm afraid it contain something unwanted like ads or malware.
Since we can get bootloader and root on this device, can we get USB mass storage option too? If possible, without flashing to a custom rom?
Extra question: if I root the device, it is still running in Stock rom right? And after root, I won't be able to get any firmware updates from Asus right?

I want to root my N7 to install stickmount and use external thumb drive. Already have the OTG cable.
But I have a few questions. If i root:
- Will I lose OTA update capability for future Android system updates? I think only custom ROM would break this, but wanted to confirm.
- Will I lose the ability to use Google Wallet? I have tried this in the past on my SGN and lost the ability to use it forever...! Get the dreaded secure element missing error message. Not complaining, just want to make sure that doesn't happen on my N7. I am still not sure why this happened on my SGN since others have reported GW working with rooted SGN's, only get a warning like 'Not a supported device', but still works for most of the users.
If I just root without custom firmware or ROM, I think i should still be able to use both the above?
TIA,
KG

First, let me say that I don't have my N7 yet, but I have a GNex and TF700.
With that said, the TF700 being rooted does not stop OTA updates, but you could lose your root.
Next, on my GNex, I did not lose the ability to use Wallet. It even knows i'm rooted and says "unsupported device", but still allows me to use the app. Whenever I use Titanium Backup, I restore my deviceID in addition to all apps and data. I have factory reset many times and my Wallet App continues to work, lucky I guess?
OK so I recently got my hands on an S4 (GT-I9505). This is an upgrade from my previous phone that was stolen; I had an S3 with CM11 installed. So as I have enjoyed CM11 previously I would like to use it on my new S4. I have a few questions:
Is the default boot-loader locked? What alternatives exist for this device?
If I root and install a custom boot-loader, would I be able to replace it later if I wanted to?
Broad question, but what security features does Cyanogenmod come with?
Is there a stock CM phone location service built in to the OS, i.e. like a tracker?
Can I encrypt the device storage with CM11 without installing apps to do this?
Can I encrypt the removable storage without installing apps to do this?
How do I restrict USB mounting of the media folders on the phone/removable media to a specific machine?
Can I restrict access to the ADB via USB to a specific machine only?
The stock recovery menu states CTC code applied "BTU" (I'm in the UK). Does the bootloader apply this setting so the phone knows which region to operate in and if so does the CWM boot-loader also apply this code too (I don't want to run into problems after where the phone won't associate to a network due to some issue with CTC, or maybe I've misunderstood this concept...) ?
I know, dumb questions eh.
You have more than a few questions there.
The only S4 devices that have locked bootloaders are ones purchased from the United States cellular carriers AT&T and Verizon. Current bootloader code includes Knox security software, which is not found on the SIII.
You don't install a custom bootloader. Custom kernels and recoveries can be easily restored to stock using Odin.
Your questions regarding CyanogenMod I can't answer, as I don't use CyanogenMod.
Encrypting the removable storage may be possible, but it varies from ROM to ROM. You'll have to read up on the ROM you choose to use.
AFAIK, you can't restrict mounting of media folders.
You cannot restrict access to ADB to one specific machine.
The bootloader has nothing to do with the CSC code. Where you're planning on installing a custom ROM it won't matter anyway.
The only stupid questions are the ones that aren't asked. But, most of this information applies to the SIII as well. Surely you had to have been aware of some of it, as the two devices really aren't that different when you get right down to it.
Thanks for your feedback.
Hi, I have a nexus 4.
it has stock rom, although i have rooted it and have tried different roms but as of now, it is on stock rom.
I encrypted the device using android's encryption.
I was under the impression that once the device is encrypted, no one can read the device contents when plugged in to a laptop via a usb cable.
But when I plugged in, I was able to read the device contents like the images , i could see.
can anyone tell me is there a way to encrypt the phone such that the contents can be read just on the phone, and not in the scenario where it is plugged via a usb.
if anyone knows a solution to this, kindly let me know.
Also, if the thread is not posted in the
its a google nexus 4 device with stock rom running android 5.1.1
You also have to set a pin/pasword/pattern. If your device is locked and you attach it to a pc, then noone should be able to access the data on you phone.
Hi all,
I'm just about at my wits end here. I have a Note 4 (N910W8) with a failed USB connection and I would really like to root it. The underlying goal is to remove/disable all samsung bloatware.
WRT the USB, I have tried adjusting developer options, *#0808#, updating drivers, changing cables, changing PC's, etc. I've tried everything I could find online. Recently, I took it to a local shop and learned that the problem is not with the USB port/board, but the motherboard itself. I'm not going to pay to replace it. I have googled far and wide. As far as I can tell, this phone will never again connect to a PC via USB. So, download mode and Odin are out.
I have tried TowelRoot, KingoRoot, and other apk's, but I am on Android 6.0.1 (MMB29M/GLW-N910W8VLS1DPK1) so all of these exploits have been patched.
I am able to boot into (stock) recovery mode, so I thought I'd try recovering via SD card, however that doesn't work either. First I get a loading screen of the mascot with a spinning wireframe polygon in his belly and the message "installing system update". Then after ~15 seconds, the mascot is on his back with a red warning symbol over his belly, and the text "No Command." is displayed. I'm not sure what that's all about, because I have the latest update installed.
Any attempts to install CF-Autoroot or another recovery firmware (ie https://samsung-firmware.org/model/SM-N910W8/region/GLW/ , or https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/snapdragon-dev/trltecan-n910w8-aoa1-stock-rooted-t3025538, etc) from SD (in recovery mode) have been met with the same error messages:
E:footer is wrong
E:signature verification failed
I'm not sure why because at least some of these recovery firmwares claim to be official builds. Granted, they are older versions (downgrades), but are signed nonetheless.
I have tried installing TWRP or CWM so I can disable signature verification, but AFAIK the device must already be rooted to install these (which seems like a bizarre catch-22, but maybe I'm confused) so that's a no-go.
It certainly feels like I have explored every possible avenue, but I have one remaining idea. Perhaps if the phone doesn't want to downgrade, I could force its hand by carefully soft-bricking the current rom in a controlled manner, then performing a recovery from SD with an official 4.4.4 KitKat build, and finally, using the towelroot/kingoroot/etc exploit to gain root access.
I mean, why else would there be a recover-from-SD option in the stock recovery menu? There must be a way to get it to accept a recovery build...
It's a last resort. But I'm willing to try it. The phone boots up, but is so bloated and laggy that it's practically unusable. Still. Am I missing anything? Surely there's some way to skip the USB / Odin method. What do you guys think? Is it time to go hulk on this thing? Is there any hope left? Curious to see how much further this rabbithole can go.
Cheers and thanks guys.
I've searched for ways to soft-brick, but have not come across anything. The bootloader appears to be locked, which is odd because I thought that only applied to Verizon variants.
I have recently downloaded an ADB/fastboot package for windows so I could attempt ADB over WiFi, however I can't establish a connection. I thought I'd do some more poking around on the phone side, so I installed some Wireless ADB apps. They all indicate a root is required, so I think that might be a dead end. I also connected to a ubuntu machine. Nothing. The phone charges, but both the PC and Ubuntu machine show zero signs of any connection at all.
There has to be some kind of SD-based solution to this. You can boot a computer from an SD card / USB stick and use that to access files (on an unencryped partition), and I'd be happy to do that here and delete those bloatware APK's directly... but I guess phones don't behave like other computers.
I've picked all the low hanging fruit. A part of me believes that there are some sneaky hacker ways to get at this without USB (ie some sort of rootkit) but that's way beyond my abilities. I'm going to take a break and attack this again once I have fresh ideas.
I'm in the same boat (busted usb port), does your phone still fast charge? Mine stopped fast charging.
I too have the same problem, except with the Note 10.1 2014. I know that is a different forum, but if you find a solution, it might be adaptable to my problem. I too have exhausted all other options as described above. Please someone, there must be a way to root via SD card instead of Odin. Help us please!
Me too. I have a Note Pro 12.1 running Lollipop. USB is busted and I've already replaced the port and ribbon, so it must be the motherboard. I mainly need it for Titanium backup, so I don't have to reinstall large games over my limited connection.
I have the same problem. Note 4 N910H. Not recognized by pc, stopped fast charging shows usb charging in battery settings. AFAIK I just re-rooted the phone before it went bust. There is no solution except changing the motherboard. Also this problem seems to be quite common.
Currently my device doesn't support USB debugging, file transfer etc. for some weird reason. Hence, decided to reset it to factory settings and then root it. It is updated to the latest version (Nougat). Kindly help me by laying out detailed steps to root my phone and install custom roms (preferable OREO) so IMEI and other functionalities won't be lost. Also, kindly guide me how to take proper precaution like backing up stock rom and other settings, in case something goes wrong and I need to unbrick the device. TIA
Sadly, still can not access any menu from notification area, and hence no USB debugging
