External speakers after update - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Ok what in the actual f*** has happened to Dolby Atmos after this update B02, they fixed the EQ, well fixed it to work as well is it didn't work before anyway, so that's something.
But the sound quality....Omg, it sound like it playing out of an old tin can now, all the tone has gone, there is no bass, it just sounds awful. It's damn loud I'll give it that, but sound with Atmos off is better by a mile now.
Someone please tell me I'm missing something.
Mike

Are the sound with headphones and dolby off better or worse than on B01?

I've not tried with headphones yet, but the external speakers are crap now, louder but quality is nothing like it was.
Unless this is all my imagination, but i don't think so.

Same boat. Atmos works from Spotify, but that's it.

Well Atmos makes a difference when I turn it of and on, but it sounds like garbage.
Lets pause for a moment to take on board what's actually been going on, so we went from MM to Nougat, but the only way to upgrade that was by downloading the update to SD, then Nougat came along, the promised raw mode was missing, daydream was missing (one of the big sells for this phone) Now moving onto 7.1.1 Google play not working, I mean how is it even possible to release an update with something this fundamental not working?
Dolby Atmos, literally the entire phones audio reputation resting on this feature NOT WORKING with the EQ, and now the lastest B2 update with broken Atmos once again!!
How is it even possible for a release to be made with such massive floors, is it really possible they don't even try these features out on the phone model before release, because it's literally the only conclusion I can come to.
I'm quite blown away by how ZTE can miss things as large as these, what's next, touchscreen not working? I think anything is possible now...

[DT2] Speaker Blown

Anyone kill the speaker in theirs yet? My daughter was watching Netflix the other day, now the speaker sounds like crap, pretty sure she killed it. I'm gonna take it in to Verizon and see if I can get it (the phone) replaced.

No, but I had the original droid turbo and the speaker sounds better than the speaker on the turbo 2.
Original Turbo speaker had much more bass sound and was more balanced whereas on the turbo 2 it's mostly treble you hear like someone is pounding on cymbals with very little bass in the background.
I listen to music a lot on my phone and this is a deal breaker for me. The speaker is very tinny sounding so I am not surprised it blew up. Also, I do not know why there is only one functioning speaker of the two at the bottom of the phone. Looks like Lenovo is compromising quality on some things. Shatterproof screen but crappy speaker. I'm impressed. Not.
EDIT: Poweramp app from playstore fixes speaker quality issue. It has graphic equalizer that allows adjusting the bass and treble settings on the speaker when playing music. My music sounds much better now.
Yeah I saw the tear down, speaker is on one side, mic for the phone on the other, would have been nice if we had two. Mine sounds bad when it's ringing even, pretty sure it's blown, anyways, off to Verizon on my lunch break today.

Mine arrived like that, and there are so many different volume controls, I thought that it arrived with speaker blown as I could go t barely any volume. I urns out if you turn up the volume in accessibility and then find the hidden built in equalizer, then go through all the different audio apps and set all their volumes and their built in apps, works great, but they all interlock in some weird way. There is literally your normal sound settings, then audio effects, then some of the volume controls in accessibility need to be turned up, then you need to fix the audio and equalizer settings in both the amazon audio app and google play. Then there are 5he same settings in the mx player (good luck, I only found it once and can't again), and it has its own mp4 music player hiding in there too. Plus there are controls for sound and volume that seem separate from the rest in your moto set up area, where you set up the moto stuff, and probably in the damn devices area too, I just don't have anything to control with that, so I disabled it.
Once you get all the various volume and equalizer controls set in sync, volume works fine. Well, as fine as any phone ever has before, but I can hear my phone now, so it helped. Good luck, hwve fun, let me know when you find those two players, I need to make a note of where they are, mx player, and a music player separate from all the rest.

Is the Dolby Atmos "EQ" a little too wonky/too sensitive to adjust for anyone else?

Is the Dolby Atmos "EQ" a little too wonky/too sensitive to adjust for anyone else?
Does anyone else think that the EQ is too "wonky" when adjusting, or is it just me?......For example, I get it set *almost* how I want it - about half a song later I'll go in and try to just add a touch more top end (last fader on right)...But as soon as I touch the fader, all the other faders seem to reset to default, or just change to a new random position? So, now I have to start all over. I know I've got like 5 seconds to make changes before they're saved, but most times it takes me a couple songs to dial in the EQ.
Am I missing something, or just not understand how to use it? I'm the sound man in my band and we have four 31 band EQ's in our rack that don't give me this much trouble, Lol.
Does your axon remember the custom preset? Mine keeps going back to music after regular intervals...
@tele_jas yes. And it's not just this Dolby, I feel on the few Dolby ports I've used on my previous phone HTC m8 it's been the same. I have used viper4android or Poweramp if I want to adjust e q.
I usually set the e q to flat or open and use the options I just mentioned. For me I'm just having Dolby on for the sound leveler and the surround enhancement libs

No, mine always seems to go back to "Music" randomly.... It also doesn't seem to save any adjustments to "Music" after a while? I'll go in and check it, and it's all reset to default.... And this is just randomly? Sometimes headphones cause this, sometimes a reboot causes this, sometimes I'll hear it switch from one song to the next.

Yeah, I've tried several Dolby ports on my past phones.... Never liked any of them either. Yes, I love the way Dolby makes my phone sound, but it's a pain in the rear to keep having to set it up all the time.
I've tried a few audio mods, I may look back into them again. I don't have a $150 pair of earbuds, or a fancy car stereo....I honestly can't tell much difference in the hi-fi audio, as long as it sounds good through the speakers and what I have to work with, I'm good. But I've also had issues with V4A when I tried it on this phone too... It turns off randomly and will sometimes take a second or two to kick in when I start a song, so there is a noticeable volume difference once the FX processing starts. That's why I went back to Dolby Atmos.
I was going to start a thread about this until I saw this,
It is the same for me, It has been bugging me since day one and I really despise it. I love to listen to my music on a higher bass, so when I use the slider and slide up, it goes back down to 50% which really annoys me!, I can slide up and hold on it but I am not willing to Hold my finger on the screen while I listen to music, this seriously needs to be fixed, just makes me wonder is it a mistake from Dolby or are we missing something here?
If you slide up and hold on the screen then lock it, surprisingly it stays there, after locking the screen or clearing the Dolby settings from the RAM, it goes back to normal.
First ZTE Phone, have it for 5 months, not impressed.
wondered this myself how does it work. The slider just goes back down again

Crappy Sound from speaker after nougat update

i have really crappy sound after the update! Reallu notocieableble in youtube and notifications. It gets really distorted and noisy in the middle spectrum and i think it wasn't that way before, maybe they change something in the sound drivers. The problem come from the upper speaker i think. So far this is the worst update i have ever take in a phone, seriously consider to unlock bootloader and go back to MM.
Anyone noticed the crappy sound?
Here and video example, it sound like s**t:

I don't hear any difference

Equalizer broken with the new Oreo update

My P10+ vky-al00 recently got the Oreo and EMUI 8 update. The update is fine except for the fact that that it completely broke the phone's equalizer. Every time I use equalizer settings while listening to music via a pair of 3.5mm earphones, I get a high-pitched whiney distorted sound. This applies to pretty much every music and equalizer app on the Play store.
Does anyone also have this issue? Is there a fix?

The speakers work fine - with the equalizers and everything. It's the 3.5mm jack that's giving me problems. I didn't have this problem with Nougat and EMUI 5.1 so it's really annoying.

I've tried it with three different pairs, it doesn't make a difference. I suppose rolling back via HiSuite would fix it but I don't want to lose my data.
I'm having the same issues with my mate 9 after the Oreo update. Every equalizer app I've tried no longer works no matter the music service (google, Spotify, podcasts, downloaded music etc) whether using wired headphones or Bluetooth headphones. When turned on the music becomes extremely distorted. I had no problems before the Oreo update.
I get the same problem with Bluetooth loudspeakers.
---------- Post added at 01:26 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:58 AM ----------
Seems like it is directly related to the bass boosting aspect. I was able to get Equalizer FX to work and sound decent with bass boost turned off and just manually adjust the equalizer settings. The second the bass boost effect is turned on it gets all distorted.
I have the same issue with my Huawei mate 9. I reported the issue to Huawei official support center, but I do not know if the issue will be fixed.
My article about this issue:
https://qiita.com/discoheavan/items/eb800288717b9d44a4f0
I too have been experiencing this audio anomaly when using wired or Bluetooth headphones and I agree that this has something to do with the bass augmentation of a stand-alone equalizer app or player with built-in equalizer. Disabling it helps but, in my case, when I hit the next or previous song button during the song it happens again. If I let the song continue without interruption, the sound continues to be fine. Weird. I hope this is fixed soon.
Yes, its was happen to me also. listening music with equalizer apps, the so freak like singer whispering to your ears. But when i turn the EQ off, the sound normal. Before updating to android 8, the EQ apps work like a champ. Sounds really boosted. Heard android 8.0 having some bugs on audio.
Same problem with P10+ and using eq FX bass booster, and when search a new song or click next-button, th eq turns off and had to started again. Why an earth P10 models have no in-built equalizer :/

Same problem for me also, but i have Honor 8 Pro (EMUI 8.0), with Equalizer FX pro. if i enabled the Bass Booster option some kind of serious noise is coming. And i tried with many other equalizer app on play store, but no use same distortion sound is coming. But on Nougat it was so fine.
it is the problem of all EMUI 8.0 users, but here only few peoples are complaining about this. how the Huawei going to take this as serious problem.
Audio effects in Oreo seems to be seriously broken. Major League dsps (v4a, jamesdsp) aren't working either. Seems there is no way to load them, until now at least.
I've got some basic Jetaudio effects/equalization to work, but still pretty far of what I expect...
So there's been no word from Huawei about a fix? That's a bummer. I can't enjoy any of my music without a decent bass boost.
Today new fw was released VTR-L29 8.0.0.365(C432) -still not working.
1st official fw release VTR-L29 8.0.0.360(C432) not working.
because equalizer is too important for me, I have to downgrade again to
VTR-L29C432B185(last nougat version)
at least its possible through Huawei Firmware finder, but You need to have backup from High Suite. (downgrade will wipe all your data and phone will be set as new device)
Got an Huawei P Smart out of the box with Emui8, i also can't use an equalizer, i always used EqualizerFX to, if turn on Bass booster i hear almost nothing of the music is playing
I had write to dutch support of Huawei but didnt get a proper anwser, so asked them again why i can't adjust the bass, and i think there is no nougat rom for my phone, was thinking for replacing for another phone
Confirm and no solution

I can confirm, that problem with equalizer is still the same - Huawei P8 lite - I tried a lot of apps - equalizer with headphones or bluethoot not working (only high noise). Android 8.0.0., EMUI 8.0.0.
I have same problem, high pitch sound after instalation and enabling the equalizer.
WTF ?
Huawei P10 Lite
I confirmed the malfunction of bassboost was fixed on my mate 9 by updating OS to android pie.
Perhaps the other huawei devices may also work fine with the latest OS. Has anyone confirmed?
P10 lite eq
There is a reasonable way to get your oreo updated device which is missing eq, to function in acceptable parameters. Download stellio player and merge it's functional eq and bass boost with eqfy, which is Spotify official equalizer. Find the best settings and enjoy. It's not perfect but it's much better than nothing, and no pitch sounds.

Does official LineageOS affect the in-built speaker sound quality?

Since there is no objective way to measure speaker sound quality, I cannot tell for sure but, it kin of feels that the speaker quality is worse with the official LineageOS ROM when compared to the official Samsung ROM. I have turned off the equaliser and the Dolby Atmos in the settings.
Does anyone else who use LineageOS ROM feel the same thing, or am I wrong?
Yes. But recent version has improved it. Still not bassy and rich sounding tho.

That's a shame. Does speakers need a proprietary driver? I wonder what is causing this.
After installing the latest (September) update, I could not feel any sound improvement. So, I reverted the tablet to the stock ROM today. After the initial setup is done, I immediately played the same song that I had played on LineageOS, and yes, it sounded much better.
I had installed LineageOS because it was version 12.1 (12 enhanced for tablet, as far as I know) and Samsung stopped the official ROM at 11. But frankly, I could not find any useful tablet features in 12.1. I at least expected a volume slider (like the one on iPad), but no. The only thing that was remotely useful was double-tap status bar to turn the screen off, but that was LineageOS's feature, not Android 12.1's. Android 11 is still very useable, so I guess I am just going to use the stock ROM. I use tablets mostly for media consumption so bad speaker sound was just not bearable.
Let this be warning to future people who want to install LineageOS. Do not install it unless you don't use internal speakers.
While I never used stock ROM, I noticed some speaker peculiarities while watching youtubes (on NewPipe). I tried to set my volume at a considerate level, not blaring which could annoy others nearby but loud enough to hear. When a speaker started talking in a low voice it inexplicably became completely inaudible. I could not understand what they were saying at all. Then it would get normal or too loud when the speaker spoke up. I had to turn the volume at annoying and unacceptable levels just to hear what was being said.
I tested the videos on another device with the same version of NewPipe and it was not an issue.
DOes anyone with cRdroid rom have this issue? I don't use it much for videos/audio so I don't care too much but reading this thread it seems to be an issue
If you want equalizer you need
PowerAmp Equalizer
It does all multimedia apps but games not yet.

I have been using crDroid 8.10 and I do notice the volume fluctuates, someone in a post said he thought it was magisk 25. I'm not sure yet I'm still looking into it.
