Hi all,
As you already know, in the last quarter of 2016 bug/vulnerability was explored called "DirtyCow" which was in Linux Kernel for 9 years
Google fixed the vulnerability in upstream devices with latest security bulletins but the vulnerability is still affecting billions of devices (from android 2.3 to android 7.1) unfortunatly
And with "DirtyCow" new rot techniques were developed, (e.g LG V20 rooter and universal rom debloater)
*** And if you wonder "DirtyCow" vulnerability affects your device or not here it is, you can check it yourself by using this simple app "DirtyCow Checker" :good:
Google Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oguzhan.mordred.testdirty
No root is required, no ads, its free, if you like my work , you can support me by rating app in here and playstore thanx
EDIT: google strangely removed my app from playstore (i explained better in the above replies, you can look) here is the apk file of latest build: http://www.mediafire.com/file/6tjakn1nn33i1sv/Dirtcow-Checker.apk
I did my review!

Hi,
Yep, i was strugling with Google play team in past week, they removed my app from playstore for unknown reasons, they said they are not allowing to exploit vulnerability in device(even if it is just to test/check vulnerability that my app does) :/
and strangely they allowed same kind of vulnerability test app which developed by NortonMobile https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.symantec.android.nfr
and they are still refusing my app...... probably my fault is to be not high prestige company enough....
Here is the apk file of latest build: http://www.mediafire.com/file/6tjakn1nn33i1sv/Dirtcow-Checker.apk
Enjoy
wow. no single comment here? what's going on
have to try and remember how to connect to adb over wifi cause it's been 2 years and then let's see where i get with this.

Tried this and it shows my device is vulnerable.
So, I tried using dirty cow exploit to gain root access but getting the below error. Any help will be appreciated.
C:\platform-tools_r33.0.3-windows\platform-tools>adb shell /data/local/tmp/dcow /data/local/tmp/run-as /system/bin/run-as dcow /data/local/tmp/run-as /system/bin/run-as

this is obsolete, will release another Nexus S version soon
Interesting project. Thank you fit sharing. So when you mean "security enhanced", this ROM can protect our Nexus S from possible malicious attacks, including malware apps in the play store, if such apps do exist, as well as possible attacks from malicious websites online. Am I correct? Also, aside from being secure, are you planning to keep this as close to stock UI as possible or are you planning to add mods like status bar widgets, volume wake mod, etc? Again, thanks for your contribution. Cheers!

Problem in enforcing SELinux using your ROM
I successfully used your rom on the android avd emulator but when i installed SEAndroidAdmin.apk and SEAndroidManager.apk it is showing that SELinux is disabled and clicking on it forces the app to close. So how do I enforce/enable the SE Linux on the rom ? Pl advise
Can you compile the kernel with voodoo sound patches when you do a user production release? I am gonna use this on my nexus s as a wifi only MID/Media device.
this is something really interesting !!!
hello ! you can build with the last update ? https://android.googlesource.com/device/samsung/crespo/+/android-4.1.2_r2.1
Hi everyone,
The problem I encounter is easy to describe . I'm developping an app for Android and this one is already present on the store for beta tests (only).
This is a part of the manifest.xml, with the well known lines:
Code:
<uses-sdk
android:minSdkVersion="6"
android:targetSdkVersion="17" />
Once I publish my app on the store, this file is read by the system and the field minSdkVersion should give information about the minimum required version to install my app (if I have well understood). In my case, with the API 6 as the minimum SDK, it should appear on the Play Store, version 2.0.1 as the minimum version required. But it doesn't happen like that...
It shows that the required version is the 1.6 or newer...
Has I misunderstood anything?
Thanks a lot for your attention
I guess 2.0.1 is AP 7
Sent from my GT-S5302 using Tapatalk 2
Resolved
No, the API 6 is version 2.0.1. And my problem is now resolved since I have published my app in production (it was for beta tests before).
Probably a bug of the store...
Noticed the same thing

Had the same problem as you. Yea the alpha and beta tab shows 1.6 and up, but when you put in in prod it sets the right version.
Introduction
Though CyanogenMod always claimed to be open-source, there were only few versions that had an open userspace (Some drivers and firmware have always been proprietary, but it's not CMs fault).
The first CM version I ever installed on a device was CM7 and it contains koush's proprietary ROM Manager app. CyanogenMod 9 seemed to have no proprietary parts, but since CM10 they included Google Analytics Client library (libGoogleAnalyticsV2.jar) within cmstats in the settings app (so it's not even possible to disable it). In CyanogenMod 10.1 CMAccount was included. It relies heavily on Google's Cloud Messaging service and includes the proprietary Google Play Services Client library (google-play-services.jar).
There are some people here at xda (including myself) that installed CyanogenMod because it does not ship GAPPS and is a fully (except vendor files) open-source and free rom. Since i noticed it's not, i started building CM without these closed-source stuff, but it's a pity to do so. That's when the idea of freecyngn started.
What is freecyngn
freecyngn is a tool you can run from recovery, that removes some known proprietary things (or apps relying on proprietary extensions) from CyanogenMod. At the moment this is Google Analytics (from CMStats in CM10/11), CMAccount, LockClock, SetupWizard, Voice+, VoiceDialer and WhisperPush.
Installation Instructions
Copy or download the zip file to the sdcard of your android device
Boot your device into recovery.
If not already done, install CyanogenMod as usual from recovery - DO NOT REBOOT
Install freecyngn as if it was a rom, but DO NOT WIPE /system before
CyanogenMod 12/12.1The version for CyanogenMod 12 should not be used on nightlies before July 9, 2015!

How it works (technical stuff)
freecyngn disassembles (using [bak]smali) the CyanogenMod settings app and removes the proprietary Google Analytics component. It then replaces it with NoAnalytics, so that existing bindings from cmstats do not break and reassembles the settings app.
FAQ
Q: My recovery hangs while flashing?
Q: Why is this script so slow?
A: freecyngn need plenty of time and is sometimes even slower than flashing the rom itself. This is bcause most recoverys underclock the cpu, which is no problem for just copying files from zip to partition or format a partition, but it is a problem for disassembling and reassembling, which are cpu intensive tasks.
Q: Do I need to apply the patch after every update?
A: Since v0.3.1 this is no longer needed. Patching is done automatically.
Q: What's about other custom ROMs?
A: AOKP is patchable with freecyngn as well. Paranoid contains Google Analytics in the proprietary ParanoidSettings app instead of the system settings and thus does not work with this patch. OmniROM does not contain Google Analytics. Note that some slimmed-down CM/AOKP-custom-builds will not work with freecyngn. If you use such, check the log file /system/freecyngn/log after flashing.

Pretty interesting stuff, I didn't knew you could assemble/disassemble dex files on the device. Anyways, I wanted to tell you, you can just boot the cpu freq to make it faster.
just grep cpuinfo_max_freq and use that number for scaling_max_freq
This is really cool... definitely going to try this out,

I'm aware of this method, but I don't think it's a good idea in general, because on some overclocked kernels cpuinfo_max_freq could be really unstable.

It's not removing CMStats completely but only the Google Analytics part. Sending stats to stats.cyanogenmod.org will still work.
Moreover, you can't really say if Google Analytics is disabled. Due to it being proprietary code, it could do nearly anything and the class initializer code is called, even if CMStats is disabled. (I assume they're not doing this, but you can;t know and they always could add this in a future version)

First: This does not remove Google Support in general. You could still install GAPPS afterwards, but it would be kind of senseless.
Second: Some people think, that Google is not this "don't be evil" company they're proposing to be. And some people like the idea of privacy and not getting totally tracked by Google, so they do not install GAPPS. If this is not the case for you, then this is just not targeting you. I'm not going to try to convince anyone that privacy is a good thing

Thank you for the info. I would not have thought to look at the Settings app for undesirable activities.
Found the following activities for Settings in Sys Tuner:
UsageStats
Settings$AnonymousStatsActivity
DeviceInfo$StatsReportReceiver
cmstats.ReportingService
Will be flashing your zip for a 'cleaner' solution than sys tuner in the near future.
And yes google is evil . Their handling of adblock and similar apps shows they're motivated by money and I wouldn't give a corp like that free reign over my device. But that's just me...
Ran this script on my rooted stock KitKat ROM @ Nexus 4 & 7, so far no abnormal activity observed on my devices...
So if we run this app, can we still use gapps or is that considered one of the tracking apps that will be removed?
flashed it on my 4xHD, will see how it will behave
i had really quick install of the zip file, like i would install kernel
that is normal or ?
because in op you say that install will take some time
Do you know if this will work on all cm based roms or only actual cyanogen?

This is only for CM-based roms that contain CMStats. The Script does nothing useful on Nexus stock or not-CM-based ROMs, these do not include Google Analytics in the Settings app (yes that's right: CM+GAPPS does more Google tracking than Google's stock)
The new v0.2 release creates a log file in /system/freecyngn so you can make sure everything worked great.

Finally! I know you've been waiting for official Xposed for Nougat for a long time, and here it is. You'll find the download links in the usual place (see first post). Make sure to also use Xposed Installer 3.1.2 (update is also in first post).
If you'd like to know what exactly you've been waiting for, check out this XDA article. Besides much background information on Xposed and its history, it includes a detailed statement by myself about what you'll get on top of the unofficial versions. You can find that statement right above the "Conclusion" headline, click the box to show it.
Note that I've also released new binaries for Marshmallow and Lollipop, although the changes are very minor. Mostly, they ensure that all releases are in sync.
I'd like to thank @wanam for testing and helping to fix the remaining bugs. He also tested it on the Samsung GS7. Also thanks to XDA for their continued support and for providing the infrastructure. And finally, thanks to you for being patient with me, coming up and implementing the new concept really took a long time (that I didn't always have).

I searched forum titles here for "xposed" and didn't get any hits.
I'm honestly more looking forward to getting Xposed than I am TWRP.
Not by much, but just a bit. I really, really need some of my modules back asap.
Most of all, root hider. Though that probably won't work with our current root and there are other options anyways.
Still though... Xposed watch for Nougat.
Latest update as of yesterday:

Current status for Nougat: Hooks are generally working now. However, they're still unreliable for inlined methods and when JIT is used (which is often the case). I had give a few technical insights here. I'm currently thinking about the different situations that need to be handled and I create unit tests for them. Then I need to fix those which are failing or even crashing the device - ideally without recompiling the whole ROM like in previous versions. Not sure if the latter is possible though.

A couple sad replies in the Xposed forum over the last day....
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed
---------------
[acejavelin]
Xposed is not compatible with Nougat, the truth is it may never be a viable option again due to security changes in Android. The developers have said that Xposed is on it's last legs, the changes in Android and the security are becoming impossible to work around. Remember last year at this time, the developers of Xposed had mostly given up and thrown in the towel and said Xposed was dead with Marshmallow, but they got lucky and found a work around just before completely giving up. They have not as yet found such a exploit to make it work, and if they do it will only be temporary as the next version of Android will probably close it again. They may get it to work with Nougat, or maybe not, either way best bet is to learn to live without it, because it will be gone before too long.
---------------
---------------
[C3C076]
Just to shed more light into this as I found it a bit misleading.
Making xposed compatible with nougat is not about "finding an exploit". It is about extending Android Runtime (ART) by adding additional functionality which is necessary for modules to be able to utilize hooking into runtime execution flow (e.g. to be able to hook on method calls).
Yes, security also plays a role but I wouldn't say it's a major contributor when it comes to Xposed development.
ART evolves and gets complicated over time which requires a developer to find new ways of implementing Xposed extensions. This process takes time and still it does not guarantee solution for full compatibility of xposed as we know it is found.
---------------
Nothing new from Rovo himself since his last post in November on the subject.
Still not looking awesome.

Rovo... said:
It seems that more and more people get nervous about whether (and when) there will be Xposed for Nougat or not, so I felt I should say something.
Why does it take that long? Because with every release, I try to ensure that Xposed integrates nicely with the improvements in the new ART version. The step from Lollipop to Marshmallow wasn't huge. It was an evolution, some things even made it possible to integrate Xposed in a more elegant way. On the whole, it was mainly careful porting than rather innovating.
With Nougat, something fundamental has changed. If you're using Nougat already, you'll have noticed that installations are much faster now. That's because APKs aren't compiled immediately (AOT), but start in (slower) interpreting mode. Sounds bad, but they have enabled JIT, which will quickly compile those methods that are used very often. That will restore the well-known and constantly improving performance of native code. Besides that, ART keeps a list of these frequently used methods ("profiling"). When the device is idle, it finally does the AOT compilation, but based on the profiling data. After that, you get the great performance right after starting the app. JIT is still waiting in case the usage patterns change, and I think it will also adjust the profile and improve the AOT compilation.
That results in various different compilation states and more complexity. Besides that, there were many issues in the past caused by Xposed's need to recompile the whole ROM and all apps: It sometimes caused boot loops when the odex files were too heavily pre-optimized, it blocked quite some storage space to store the recompiled files, and I needed to disable some optimizations like inlining and direct pointer calls. I hope that I can make use of the JIT compiler to avoid that in Nougat. If Xposed knew from where a method is called, it could invalidate the callers' compiled code, so that they would temporarily use the interpreter. If they're important enough, JIT will recompile them.
I have already done a lot of research and experiments for this and I'm currently trying to implement this. But as you can imagine, all of that is much effort and can easily take hundreds of hours. That's net (working) time, not real time. If I worked on Xposed 24 hours a day, that might be done within a week or two. But, in the last year or so, my "time for Xposed stuff" was about 5 hours a week, sometimes more and sometimes less. You can do the math yourselves... There are just so many other (non-technical) things that I need or want to do. If you substract the time it took me to build the new installer version, move the repo to a new server and restore compatibility with the Nov 2016 security patches, that's even less time for new stuff.
So yes, I'm still working on Nougat support, whenever my free time allows it, but I don't have any idea when it will be done. Once it's done, you'll know.

Awesome, I just got home and read only a blip about it so far while I was stuck in bumper traffic.

Not working on Pure Nexus 7.1.2 with Magisk 14.2 for many people. Not complaining by any means, super happy that I have my phone pretty much how I want it with PN and Magisk, just letting others know.
Rovo89 (the Xposed creator) says it works on his Pixel?

XDA form member @Zacharee1 created an app name "RCTD Remover for LG" and released it on XDA Labs at https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.zacharee1.rctdremoverforlg . Unfortunately, the software is no longer available on XDA Labs due to the host suddenly being shut down.
I seek and request the latest version of the app. The last versions available on XDA Labs had the following characteristics:
Display Name: RCTD Remover for LGPackage Name: com.zacharee1.rctdremoverforlgVersion: 10

Thanks Mysticblaze347. However, the version you posted appears to be much older than the current version. My impression is that it is the initial release version of the software.
@Zacharee1 has the next version, version "7" available at his Android File Host repository space at https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=745849072291699579 . Newer versions, unfortunately, seemed only provided an XDA Labs (which is gone).

It appears that version "8" is embedded within the Oreo ALPHA OMEGA ROM "A-O_US996_UNIVERSAL_20F_1.0.2.zip" flash file ( https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=11410963190603909837 ). I still would rather have newer versions.

I tried looking and v 10 seems impossible to find so I re wrote a script (.sh) that can be ran via a script manager to apply on boot. It stops the rct.d service
I don't know what version this one is, but I got this one from XDA labs back in August 2018. Didn't think too many people would care about this since I'm assuming all recent custom ROMs have some form of it already built in.

My impression is that the main complaint about LG Root Checker Tool with LG V20 is that it was rather buggy on LG Android Nougat firmware and could result in severe performance problems. The problem does not appear to manifest on LG Android Oreo on my LG V20 US996 using the US99620f firmware (Android Security Patch level is November 1, 2018).
The RCTD Remover for LG software is supposed to work also on other LG devices, and not just the LG V20 family, and should also remove other things such as Triton (not sure what that is) for devices that use it, so its might be more valuable for other devices. I think it a good idea to retain a copy of it should one need it.
