PSA: USA Bootloaders WILL be LOCKED!!! - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Guides, News, & Discussion

My DM with a T-Mobile rep.

Any chance you can ask them to list the actual bands the phone supports?

I'm glad I'll be the recipient of the Exynos (unlocked) version. However i can get with the whole security aspect in regards to Google wallet & Samsung Pay/android pay. Like you mentioned though i NEVER and will EVER use this service, it gets disabled from the moment i get the phone (plus my bank doesn't support it anyway lol).
You pay a premium it should be up to the user as to what he does and yes what he/she risks.
I am very much against taking away the option of root and custom ROMs because of a service being forced upon us.

I second being against them taking away root and ROMs and forcing services upon us. If there was less or no fragmentation in android with regards to updates, I could perhaps stay stock..

LOL! Sorry but, how old are you? I'm as disappointed as anyone, but you're acting like a child. You think that because YOU'VE been with T-Mobile "since VoiceStream" T-Mobile should change their decision? Ridiculous. The guy you were talking to can't help you, cannot make any executive decisions and sure as hell isn't passing along your "concerns" to Legere. He also doesn't give a damn that you're cancelling a whopping THREE (3!!!) device orders. Did you think he was going to crumble to his knees, beg you to keep your orders and run tell boss, "we must change our bootloader plans because Mr. VoiceStream is simply NOT having it?"
You were just whining to yourself while he typed, "I understand how you feel" and rubbed your shoulders a bit.

Agreed, complaining to a underpaid rep that probably hates listening to people complain all day everyday is not going to get bootloaders unlocked.

You know the bootloader is locked before you buy the device. Deal with it and move on.

LMAO...Yea, sure he did.

Useless thread. This is not a surprise and is something we already knew.

I ordered two from TMo and I'm sure that a root method will pop up soon after release.
Motorola had bootlocks on the Bionic and it was still able to be rooted. I bet within a month we'll be rooting with the rest of them.:good::good:

Samsung has officially lost by business. Been a samsung guy since the S3 and I've stuck with them in the years since. It's such a shame that they choose to do this. I don't need Samsung pay, as I have a wallet. Awful that they force these programs down our throats as they're nice to have but are completely unnecessary.

The Galaxy S7 came out in March and it took three months to even figure out how to root it. We don't even have a bootloader unlock for the GS7, and it's been a year since it's release. Might want to lower your expectations as devs are moving away from locked down devices like the Galaxy series in the U.S.

Wow this is like posting water is wet.

I stopped rooting my phones, but I'm still against taking away the option. I just never could pull the trigger on losing Samsung Pay permanently.

Rooting & Contracts?? From The Horses Mouth

Just spent an hour on the phone with Sprint, talking about my account. Awesome rep, really knew his stuff and helped me save some money on my bill.
Anyhow, I told him I wanted to talk to a supervisor and give the man props for being good at his job.
In passing, I brought up the threads on here about Sprint tracking rooted phones and cancelling contracts.
From the supervisor's own words:
"Sprint cannot and will not cancel a contract due to a device being rooted or modified. Sprint can only void the warranty. Also, they do NOT have the capability of knowing if a phone is rooted with out physically examining it"
Now, a certain troll started some BS here a few weeks ago about the OTA and Sprint knowing if you're rooted by whether you accept it or not.
THIS IS FALSE!!!!!!
"Sprint cannot force an end user to accept any updates"
End of Story!
Thanks, the dude on the other thread claims the he ran RUU, but I think he forgot to flash s-on, so that is how the sprint tech department knew that he had root. I was very shocked by his statement of packet sniffing and root checking etc.
EDIT: the other thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1137063
The other thread is an example of what happens when 16 year olds root their phone and thether xbox 360.
Now he got everyone paranoid, a day before E3d launch.
Boehner.....
Also under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 if you are rooted only your software warranty is invalid (bootloop, and 4G key loss for example). If your USB port breaks they still have to honor the hardware warranty.
An exception is if you root your phone, load the wrong, or a defective ROM which causes the CPU to peg then overheat causing the CPU chip to China Syndrome into the system board.
i knew they couldnt cancel your contract b/c your rooted! thanks for the info hipkat!

No Prob. I had him specifically say, with no uncertainty, you cannot be cancelled for rooting your phone and they cannot magically track whether you're rooted or not from a remote location.
Now he DID say that if you are abusing by having 45 gigs of data transfer a month, you are definitely getting a red flag, and I cited the post in this forum when I asked him about it.
From what Ive heard the new phones will be have an OTA with a boot loader. I have also seen that you can uninstall sprint apps on the new EVO 3D without root. This, to me, says that sprint will have to be ok with rooted phones whether they like it or not... Also, if someone is using that much data, that someone needs to lift their head up and put the damn thing down for a little while.
Deep down, I think we all knew this to be true. That other dude was just careless

Which is EXACTLY why I put this thread up. I just got tired of seeing this fear mongering being spread over the forums, and since the rep I was talking to was super cool, and knew just how to hook me up on my account, I knew he'd be a guy to ask, then when I talked to his supervisor, I just laid it out with a direct question; "Will Sprint cancel an account because of a rooted device and can you see if my phone is rooted from a remote location?"
Well, now y'all know the answers
Do you know how many people would be purposely rooting their phones just so that they could leave Sprint without an ETF? Especially the week iPhone 5 drops?
HipKat, when I get back home to my PC, you've got a push on the "thanks" radio button from me coming. All these trolls come in here to stir up trouble. They must work for AT&T or summin'.

Returning my Galaxy SIII (Verizon)

it is with a very sad and heavy heart that i've decided to return my samsung galaxy s3 to Verizon today. it's by far the greatest cellphone i've seen.
i had shattered my Thunderbolt a couple weeks back, and wanting to keep my unlimited data plan, i was more than glad to pay full price for this device. it's really that incredible.
unfortunately, upon receiving the device, i learned of +Verizon Wireless' locking of the bootloader. they were the only carrier to do such. this has soured the taste in my mouth so greatly, that i am forced to send this incredible machine back to Verizon.
a truly sad day to be a geek.

i am, when i preordered the device there was no 'developer version' (and there's yet one to be for sale on Samsung's developer page)
when it goes live, i'll pick up one, though it makes me wonder just how much Android developer support will be on the Verizon model. not too many devs are willing to pay full price, the community is likely to be very small.
Imo your better off sticking around and waiting for Adam Outleter to finish unlocking the bootloader. I doubt too many will be getting the dev gs3. Dont see much point in a developer edition when there wont be much development on it...

Try to refrain from posting in it. Just read and follow along with all the smart guys. Some have already post the "omg you guys are so smart" stuff in there and Adam specifically asked no one to do that. I hope as this link gets out there people can follow the rules.
The locked version will have 10x the dev support Imo. I wouldn't get the dev device. That and you can already flash aosp roms on the locked version using kexec. I think you are making a mistake.

To the op... I feel ya.. In fact so much so I canceled my pre order and switched to tmobile! So happy I did.. I'll save $50/month and have a fully unlocked device. [Q] Verizon version capable of root?

So I've started researching the Note 3 as of recently as a replacement to my S4. What's got me worried is all the talk about how Verizon has taken extra steps to lock down the Note 3. I know the talk isn't anything new since Verizon has consistently tried locking down our phones without success, however is there anything new to cause concern over this phone in particular? Are we confident that the Note on Verizon will receive root with s-off? Not having root would definitely be a deal breaker so I'd like to nail down the facts before I pull the trigger. Also another side question, what is the version number for the Verizon version? Thanks for any help provided!
Found the answer to my second question. The Verizon version model number will be model SM-N9005
That's the same lte model that they are already rooting overseas. The criteria being the bootloader is unlocked. I'll be around to supply cheer and encouragement

This is what pisses me off Suzook, I agree we have all been trolled and we all was hoping the 29th was the ship date. One of my best friends is a Verizon Corp manager and told me that Verizon was going to ship the phone out early so they wouldn't lose business to other carriers but there was some legal concerns about charging people cards earlier then what's posted on Verizon website. So they didn't sale early....
As for the guy saying he is going to unlock the bootloader he might be full of it and he might be telling the truth!!! There's 7+ billion people in this world, I'm sure it's possible that someone is either smart enough to crack it or has inside connections. Think about the S3, that was unlocked because someone leak an unlocked bootloader... Note 2 never received that leak, it was unlocked because Adam and Relake (I misspelled his name).
It's okay to be pessimistic, but lets see how this thing plays out instead of making rude comments. The rude comments serve no point and does nothing for the xda community.
If you would stop and reflect and compare your post vs your thanks, now look at my post vs thanks, you will see I have half the post but twice as many thanks as you... Why?? because I try to post comments with a purpose and not judge or say negative comments.

[Returning the Note 7 due to locked bootloader]

All 3 of my Note 7's are going back!
I'm curious to see how big we can get this thread and I hope it makes a statement.
Dumb T-mobile...becoming ATT and Verizon. Actually with the S7 and Note 7 stunt with locking the bootloader, they have...
Such a shame. We bought the phone so it should be ours 100% to do what we want with it. Wth is this? A lease program you're pulling?
Sorry, but I along with many others will not fall victim to your rubbish tactics. I will not be a slave to your proprietary bs.
Who's with me?
Not everyone uses Samsung Pay. No excuses can justify being okay with the fact of not having full control over a device we pay for. It's straight up communist.
I'm solving the issue by not buying one. Period. As much as I love the phone, I will wait to see the new Nexux.
Did anyone expect it to be unlocked? Lol

Lol, expected? Not really, that'd be a fantasy after seeing the S7. However, it could have been and having that sliver of hope is / was realistic. Reality? Obviously not the case.
Not saying it'll happen, but this isn't the first time we've been in this position with being faced with the impossible.

Yes I am seriously surprised at the number of people that thought it wouldn't be locked. It is like the whole S7 release all over again but this time anyone familiar with Samsung and especially members of XDA should have not been surprised at all.
Although i dont care about such things, i do think Samsung should unlock the bootloader. Once the phone is fully payed off you should have that option. I dont think anyone on a plan like Jump should have the option because those phones get refurbished and if anyone else has ever bought a rooted phone off Craigslist knows the pain when the seller messed up there phone and now is trying to pawn it off on someone else. Or maybe they put all phones that have the bootloader unlocked on a special list made to the public so people like me can avoid thise phones

I'm returning mine just because the difference between the note 7 and s7 edge is negligible. Not for $850

The word, "surprised" would only be valid to some, but to most of the enthusiasts, it's not really that we're surprised, it's just that with the international variant (SD820's being offered in markets where there is no Samsung Pay) and with the out cry of the S7, it's not unreasonable to have had a little hope for the Note 7. Long shot? Uh yea, of course...but like I've said, this isn't the first time at the rodeo where we've been faced with the impossible; that became possible in due time.
Come on guys... Seriously? I love rooting and tinkering just as much as anyone... But you are returning all 3 because the bootloader is locked? I'm amazed you bought them in the first place if this is a deal breaker.
If 1000 phones go back they lose a million dollars...Mine will be one of them as well.... If we stuck together in the first place they would HAVE to listen....Lock Bootloaders...whatever, but give us that want a solution one...Unlock for the Root Community...the most creative and die hard enthusiast deserve better than this

No not really, that is a potential lose but in actuality they will just go into the refurbished pool. 1000 phones is still nothing out of the 25+ million phones they will sell. That is based just on the Q2 sales numbers of the S7 \ S7E. The 1000 phones is only 0.004 % of 25 million phones.
Also returns are just part of everyday business and expected. Unless the return rate was a high percentage, it is just normal business to them.
Unfortunately our numbers and desires mean nothing to them compared to their own...

Why can't we just flash the unlocked w8 bootloader? N5 was always interchangeable, and w8 is also sd820, so why not? Someone should try...they may have left us an out...

lol I know man, this is how I felt when I got the S7E. I said I was done with Samsung and would never buy a locked down phone. Well here I am with my Note7 knowing it was locked. I would prefer to have the option to root and flash custom roms if I wanted to but I decided to just stay stock which is why I was fine buying the phone.
There just isn't another phone out or soon to be out from what I have seen to match this. I am still keeping the Note5 for the wife so if I really get the itch to flash something, I can always do it on that one.

I am sure there is more to it than that but it is a different scenario than what we had with the S7. I would think that this is the most likelihood of the T-Mobile version getting unlocked. BUT with the reports of the F model getting the update that locked down it's bootloader, I think there is a good chance that they will all be locked down before long.

If this will work now that's all we need...flash the bootloader from w8 and don't take any ota updates...they can't force us to update...

True, once rooted the update can't be forced. The value of the rooted phones could really go up since the supply will start to dwindle.

Root for Note 20 Ultra US Version ?/!

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned at all on this forum, unless I'm reading it completely wrong.
https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-note-20-ultra-root-us-unlocked-snapdragon-865/
Now, full disclosure, I haven't actually done this but it is very interesting. I haven't tried my device since the note 8, and is have to get more comfortable with knowing how to unroot before I attempt this. In addition to the details installing custom recovery, I'm just not ready I guess. I'm talking myself up though lol
What do you guys think?

Didn't try it but glad to see there's an option for it now, even if it costs $150

Yeah price is a little steep but will be worth it. I never use samsung pay so losing it is no big deal. Just hope there are some devs out there to cook up ROMs, kernels, etc!
Hey guys, I've been out of the loop since the Galaxt S2 lol... Is it a possibility to pull the unlocked/rooted image off of one phone and use it for others?

You have to unlock your bootloader before doing anything. That's where the issue is
Interested in seeing the results for somebody
That's a bit too much for something you have to wait for someone to have the time to do it .
It comes from China and have to use teamviewer and what about a refund if it doesn't work? Think I'll just stay stock for the mean time, no telling what might get installed on your phone.

Well, I already have WeChat installed so if they are gonna get me, they did long ago lol. Besides, if you root your phone this is a risk you're taking right off the bat. There's a reason Enterprises don't allow rooted devices to connect thru Microsoft/Exchange Activesync services.
Giving superuser access is a risk.
Edit: it also clearly states there is no refund if it doesn't work.

I know the risks of root been doing it for years, just think the risk out weights the advantages with China involved!

No the token is special to each device
---------- Post added at 07:07 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:04 AM ----------
The guys doing it are legit. So all the nasty comments can go up the road. It's either pay it or don't. If you don't. Don't whine about it. Cause obviously you don't know
This method also works for the Canadian variants as well.
Personally I'd probably stay stock but I can see many take advantage
of this method to Root their smartphones.

Ye sir, I agree with this sentiment. Please don't take my sarcastic response as an insult to China. It's 100% the opposite. More skeptical of a product/service purely because it originates in China? What a joke.

But the question in play is development. You pay and then no development hurts too. Thats why I try to stick it with known models if at all possible
i rooted my U model
will cost you 125
that's not something you'd spread on xda

More then likely somebody will copy it and either charge money as well or just release it to the general population. Stuff leaks happens all the time and seeing that they are making what seems to be good money gives even more attraction to those skilled enough to copy it.

I suppose my feelings about paying are: if I want to root bad enough, I'm gonna want it $125 bad. In the scheme of things, is not a huge amount. Not if you can afford a $1300 smartphone, or even ~$800 with trade in.
And yes, it's also worth supporting development.
Edit: also agree, there is a lot going on in China. I've worked with colleagues in China and have friends there. Is a different culture there, there's so much more job competition than here. There's not room for half-assed efforts.
