Decision Decision!! Need help - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I am still deciding on which one to buy s8 or s8 plus.
Do you guys think s8+ is going to be too big and awkward to use? Especially the fingerprint scanner on the back
BTW I am using S7 edge and it's perfect

I'm getting the plus and I'm going to mainly use the iris scanner instead of the fingerprint

If you have never use a Nexus 6P or something similar in size, you will find it huge !
I personally own a 6P and can't go under 5.7'' . S8+ screen is welcomed !

I own a S7 edge and I'll pre-order the S8. It's almost the same size as the S7e, so if you think it's perfect you should buy the 5.8 inches Galaxy S8

fyi S8+ has slightly better and bigger battery

Upgrading from the Nexus6p to the S8+ ftw...

S8+ because of the bigger battery and screen

From S7E to S8+ !
Apparently, the S8+ is more or less the same size that Iphone 7 plus...

I'm getting the 8+ purely for the larger battery, but based on the dimensions, I don't think size will be too much of a problem, compared to other phablet phones out there. The only awkwardness may come from the taller display - definitely not the width.

Can anyone find a size comparison or video review between the S8/S8+ with the nexus 6p?

I preordered the S8+ and after playing with it in store, I cancelled my preorder and got the normal S8. I hate the size of the iPhone 7 Plus and the S8+ is just a little more narrow, but still girthy to me. Granted I don't have massive hands and could probably live with the S8+, but the S8 just felt so comfortable. I have a G6 and a Pixel currently and I highly recommend the normal S8 if you're used to a smaller device.

I went to Best buy yesterday and held both, the s8+ didn't feel so big that it was unweildly, but nonetheless it was still a big phone, the s8 felt pretty perfect especially if you like the size of the s7e, but I cancelled my preorder for the s8+ and will wait to see battery life reviews, I'm hoping s8 will be on par with s8+

I also went and looked at both today, and purchased regular s8. s8+ was too tall.

I am now going to bestbuy as well. Will see how each model feels and then will pre-order .
Anything you want me to check guys??

go to phonearena.com and check out their size comparison feature....you can calibrate your screen based on your current phone and it will give you the option to generate an overlap or side by side comparison. This is the best way to figure out if you like the size as this is going to be the actual size of the phone and not just an eyeballed guess

There is no difference between two except size and battery. Battery wise you won't see much difference because of the screen size. So if you want bigger phone go with S8+ else you know what to get.
Personal, I got S8 for myself. Should be easy to carry in pocket as well.

S8 is a hair shorter and a little narrower than the S7 edge.
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/si...y-S7-edge,Samsung-Galaxy-S8/phones/9818,10311
S8+ is just a little taller and a hair wider than the S7 edge.
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/si...y-S7-edge,Samsung-Galaxy-S8/phones/9818,10312

Because the only differences between the S8 and S8+ are the screen and battery sizes (5.8," 3000mAh vs 6.2," 3500mAh) it comes down to personal preference. Like other people have said, the S8 is slightly shorter and narrower than the S7 Edge, while the S8+ is slightly narrower and taller than the S7 Edge, so either version should be find.
Personally, if you have smaller hands (like I do) and/or already struggling with the size of the S7 Edge, then go with the S8. If possible, go to a Best Buy and check out both versions there in their Samsung section. Feeling them in hand will prove to be MUCH more helpful, than anyone's 2 cents on the matter. That's what helped me figure out what color and version of the S8 I wanted to pre-order.
Just saying, even with smaller hands, I didn't have much issue with the larger variant. Heck, took me literally an hour to actually do the pre-order because I had trouble making up mind on which size, haha. XD That, and if you do have a Best Buy near you, do the pre-order there as you can save $50 on the S8, $100 on the S8+. Unless you plan on buying it outright, because you won't get the discount, at least that's what I can tell on their site.

Swapped my S6 Edge for an S6

So I got the S6 Edge the moment it came out
(Actually arrived two days before its official release date in Ireland)
its the first Galaxy I've owned since the S2
(Might be controversial, but I hated the S3,4 & 5 due to over plasticy feel and rubbish TouchWiz interface)
So getting the Edge....I was very very impressed with the speed of the phone, the camera, the battery life......very good
Except I quickly felt the 'Edge' is just a total gimmick.
Style wise its really nice...but none of the Edge features were useful in anyway to me. I also didn't need the 64GB of storage as I never put music on it.
But instead of moving onto another phone model (which I have a massive tendancy to do) I decided to swap for the S6(+cash) And I am still really happy with the phone.
I dont miss the Edge at all.
Any of you guys feel the same?
yes same with me I initially went to buy the edge but ended buying plain S6, it's just a gimmick with the edge.
I heavily contemplated the edge when it came out. After playing with both in store and factoring in the price difference, I went with the s6 and haven't regretted it one bit - in fact, I'm very happy with my decision.
Edge is real real amazing design but badly I need dual sims so only regular S6 to me, this is the main reason.
The Edge screen is also smaller in reality bcoz of the curve on both sides, that meant when you surfing the web only got around 4.7" ~ 4.8" reading size which is another unacceptable reason to me. Not to mention the Edge screen is always darker and will consume more battery at the same brightness level and the battery is already not enough.....
There are just too many disadvantages other than the price, so I go for normal one. I still very like the edge until now but real no way.
To be honest...that was also one of the reasons was the slight loss of actual screenspace
Theverge said it best, go in store and look at the Galaxy s6 edge, enjoy its beauty, then get the regular S6

Yes. I purchased the Edge kept it a few days then found it to be a waste of the extra cash so returned it for the S6 and am a happy camper. The Edge is stunningly good looking but truly over priced. The 32Gb versions are 150.00€ difference in price. I could not justify that.
The S6 is vastly outselling the Edge per unit. I ponder what Samsung make of that?
Ryland
they have been advertising the Edge a ton on TV around here, the format to me doesn't make any real sense. Never even considered it.
Absolutely, the S6 edge"s" makes the phone look narrow and you lose screen real estate. Awful gimmick. Regular S6 is gorgeous for me.
The Edge is stunningly good looking but truly over priced.
I couldn't stand the light reflections on the edge screen when watching youtube videos.

Well i picked up white S6 after couple of weeks of launch and then i played with both edge and regular and just felt that edge was too expensive. Also thought S6 felt better after a month or so i was regretting of not getting the edge but it seems that not many useful features have been added to it so now i feel better for going with the regular. I do feel it was too expensive to begin with.
I was dead set on getting the edge until I held one in a store. I opted for the standard S6. I felt the edge was slippery to hold, looked thinner, had light reflection. Prefer the feel and look of the standard S6.
I would have probably picked the regular S6 even at the same price. With the Edge being so much more expensive, for me getting the S6 was such an easy decision.
just so u didnt know, edge is far more durable than a regular s6.
look around youtube, s6 edge vs s6 drop test
Yeah, right. All you need is a proper case for your S6. You can find excellent choice of good cases for just 15$.
i got the normal s6 over the edge and must say more than happy with it

Anyone dropping their phone is putting their phone in the lap of the gods. A normal drop from head height shouldn't be bothering the S6 or the Edge though, barring scratches.
The main problem I had with the Edge is the grip. The sides are so thin that the phone doesn't feel good in hand.
I ended up buying a 920F without any carrier subsidy like I've done with all my previous phones, and the price for an international Edge was just ridiculous. I couldn't bring myself to shell out that much for a depreciating asset. Anyways I'm happy with my normal s6, I did think the Edge screen made it look smaller and like others didn't like how it felt in the hand. Kinda important for something that you're holding all day every day.

help me pick s6 edge plus over note 5

so i think the Edge 6 plus in gold just look phenomenal but there's something in me that says the S pen on the note 5 is more practical then the edge ticker. i went in the VZW store yesterday and i couldnt get the edge info ticker or other options to work right, but im attributing that to the VZW demo that kept popping up on the screen. I know the edge screen doesnt do much, but does it work like it's supposed do?
i know the phones are almost identical besides pen and edge....
any other reasons i should pick the 6+ over the note 5?

no trying to decide
Samsung S6 Edge+ Plus is faster in benchmark
Gold colour is the best
screen looks more beautiful, curved edge on both sides. 3D effect
better battery life
edge s6+ is more lighter. not heavy for its size.
are you going to use the S pen for 1 or 2 weeks then never use it again?
.
Just swithched from N5. Love the looks, form factor and the screen is more accurate.

If you want the Stylus and its features go Note 5. If you want the sexiest design in market go Edge+. The Edge+ is slightly faster on benches and has slightly better battery life due to the lack of all the stylus features that run in the background. Do not expect features for the edges they are there for sexiness and design and I love them. Swiping from the edges feels really good on them. The Edge+ in Gold is really dope and eyecatcher all my friends ask me immediately what's this phone and want to touch it. Also the Edge+ feels more compact on hand and despite its screen size it's really small. If it feels slippery on your hand and the Edges are hard for you to grip on I will suggest you to use a transparent TPU case which will not hide the sexiness of the phone and will help a lot the grip. Despite their design differences and the stylus internally those 2 are exactly the same.
I bought the edge 6+ because I couldn't find a 64gb Note 5. I looked at both, the edge is sexier.... At a price. It's an uncomfortable phone to hold, this after two months of it. It's so beautiful that you want to hold it all the time though. Also, the edges catch light differently, and the keyboard is not so accurate to use.
Practically, if I had had the Note 5 in 64gb in front of me I'd have chosen that.
32gb on either, despite what people say, is too little.

Are the edges worth it?

I currently have a Galaxy S6, and I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade to an S7 edge or a regular S7. Is the edge functionality worth the extra cost?
Thanks!
--Ron
If You like and need better battery and biger screen go for it. Edge is the last thing except visuals ?
i just made the same switch as your talking about. i was on the regular s6 and made the jump to the s7 edge and i love it so far. i love LOVE the battery life as ive been on a single charge starting from 4 am this morning and its 10 20 now and i still have 24 % left . my s6 wouldve been dead by now . the only thing so far that ive noticed myself doing is actually not using the edges as theyre intended and from what i can gather is simply because im not used to having them. i love the phone and im sure you wont be disappointed! good luck in your choice!

Thanks for your reply. How does the S7 edge camera hold up against the S6 camera? I'm hearing good things about the S7 camera, but it would be good to get the opinion of a user who's used both.

I disabled the edge features... I just love the look of the device, bigger screen and bigger battery.
The Edge features were not worth it on the S6 Edge. They're more than worth it on the S7 Edge and I can't t live without them.

I like some of the functionality of the edge. The only problem I've had with the edge is I use SwiftKey as my keyboard and I set it up with the number line on top of the keyboard. Sometimes, it's difficult to press the number 1 because it's right on the edge. I think I can shrink the keys a little in SwiftKey so it'll fit better, but I haven't tried it yet.

I tested S7 edge at the Samsung experience booths, the camera is marginally better on S7 vs S6 in regular lighting, under low light scenarios, it takes brighter images with less noise. The aspect ratio is 4:3 though so you'll get vertical black bars on the screen when you review the pics you took since most screens including the phone are 16:9

I've had the s4, note 3, note 4,note 5,and now s7 edge, the edges are cool, but super annoying when typing with 1 hand, because I have a tendency to hit letters on the edge of screen when typing. So far, I believe the note 5 was a better phone, but then again I was in love with the pen features.

My last 3 devices have been edge variants, note edge, s6e+, and s7e. I absolutely loved the functionality of my note edge but had them totally disabled on s6e+ cause they kinda sucked. Now with s7e I'm using the edge panels again, Samsung has definitely improved the stock panels and some development on new panels are ok. They still have a long way to go but there's enough function now for me to use them. Plus the edge is a sexy beast looks wise.

Worth upgrading from S7/Edge to S8/Plus

I've not seen this asked anywhere else but from what we know so far it doesn't seem worth it. We know the S8 has the same battery as the S7 & the S8+ has a smaller one than the Edge. We know the S7 & S8 have the same camera and Ram so apart from the chipset is it worth splashing out £799 & £899.............................I know I wont be

For most uses, the S8+ won't have a significantly larger (usable) screen area. It looks to be much the same as the S7 Edge screen, just with a bit added on the end for the on-screen keys, in place of the physical ones that have been removed. The size of the screen you can actually use will be similar to on the S7 Edge. Of course it will be much bigger in apps where the on screen keys are hidden (including, presumably, wider-than-16:9 video, and certainly for the Gear VR).

The screen much smaller than a typical 5.5 inch screen due to the edge design. When i put it up against other flat 5.5 inch devices even more noticable.
And a regular 5.5 inch screen is too small to begin with for my tastes
So for me yeah, tiny.

That would be true for the s8 but i dont believe so for the plus.
Wont know for sure until its in hand and side by side with my s7 edge of course.
Without reading any of this i say NO. Any money the S8 will have worse battery life. I'd be VERY surprised if it does better than the S7. Same camera... Stupid fingerprint sensor placement. It's a "notch" faster. The ONLY reason I'd be tempted it's that GORGEOUS bezel free screen. But that's it! The S7 screen still uses the same screen technology and is just as sexy.

You're right that we'd need to look at the real thing, but just for fun, using Pythagoras' Theorem (we know the S7 Edge is 5.5" with a ratio of 16:9, and the S8+ is 6.2" with a ratio of 18.5:9) gives the following sizes:
S7 edge screen: 122 x 68.5mm
S8+ screen: 142 x 68.9mm
How much room does the soft keys area use on a phone of that size? I'd say probably over 15mm, which brings the usable size fairly close to the S7 Edge.
I'm sure things don't work out exactly at those sizes, especially with the curved edges, but it's enough to make me doubt that the S8+ will be as big a gain as people are expecting. I'm looking forward to seeing one for real, though
nope will wait for note 8
I went from a Nexus6 to a S7 edge so the screen size was really apparent. Had to pull out the tablet again for some things.
I love the hardware of the S8+ but will wait for a new Note before I decide.
I don't feel enough has changed for me to get the S8 or the S8+. I'm disappointed that the FPS isn't underneath the glass, the batteries aren't bigger, and the microSD didn't get updated to the new UFS one announced last year.

Or how about waiting for the Note 8
3500 mAh battery for 6.2 inch screen might not be enough.

I wouldn't be surprised if your wrong.

What phone did you have before?

One question I've got for you S8+ owners, what phone did you guys switch from and a brief explanation as to why?
I switched from an S7 edge, because I've been a Samsung fanboy since the GS2 and I've owned every single Samsung flagship since that time, so I didn't want to end the streak. I also picked one up because the midnight black one is probably the best looking phone I've ever seen and because the phone is still rare where I live, it 'stands' out a lot.
I came from a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ 64 GB model. It is still a great phone today and it's also fast and nice. But the things that made me to go for the Galaxy S8+ is.....
1. Bigger screen. 6.2 inch vs 5.7 inch.
2. Better camera in low light environments and in focusing on objects.
3. Better stabilization under video recording. Now you can use both OIS and EIS at the same time on all resolutions. I could only use OIS and EIS at the same time with [email protected] fps on the Galaxy S6 edge+.
4. MicroSD card support. Yes, my Galaxy S6 edge+ was missing that.
5. Better sound quality via the 3.5mm headphone jack. Yes, i do love to listen to musics.
6. Snappier / faster phone in general use.
7. IP68 water and dust resistant.
8. A design that looks futuristic. Yes i kinda needed something that had a new and fresh look.
So there you have my reasons on why i changed from the Galaxy S6 edge+ that i had for one and a half year .
EDIT: I just sold my Galaxy S6 edge+ phone today. Good night sweet prince, you served me well those one and a half year.

Screen marked too easily on the Porsche Design so needed Gorilla Glass 5 which is much more resistant to scratches - I know this as I didn't put a screen protector on the Note 7 and really didn't look after it (knowing it was being returned).

Galaxy S4. Got it when it came out and it was a beast, thanks to XDA and all the wonderful people here it has been going strong since then but it's been showing it's age for the past year or so.
My requirements were simple. Good support from the manufaturer and community (XDA), removeable battery and/or SD card, not an LG, and just something that really stood out over my S4. Was dissapointed with the s6 an no SD card, was tempted for the s7 but timeing never added up then when i had the money and started looking the s8 was around the corner. As soon as i picked up and tried the demo i knew i wanted it.

LG V10 since Dec 2015. I had to warranty three of them thanks to the bootloop issues and I'm suppose to be picking up my S8+ from my local store today.
Galaxy Note 7.
I came from the Moto Nexus 6, which I completely loved. The processor is getting a little long in the tooth as is the battery. While I wasn't as harsh on it as the critics were, the camera doesn't hold up in comparison to today's phones. A phone finally came along where I did not have to compromise on screen size (I like the big screens). S8+ is it. While I'm not a fan of Samsung's heavy handed user experience, those things are pretty easily remedied with a new launcher and the removal of some bloat.

I had the Note 7 but had to return it, and went back to using my Note 5. I was going to wait for the Note 8 but my Note 5's battery is starting to show it's age and I decided to get the S8 since it feels so good in the hand. Then I decided to try the S8+. Not sure which I like better. The S8 sure does feel nice in the hand, but of course the bigger display on the S8+ is very nice.
I also have a Pixel, which is an OK device. I wanted a Pixel XL but the 128GB were always backordered and by the time I could get one, the S8/S8+ was almost released so I passed and went for the S8.
As for the reasons I picked the Galaxy devices over the Pixels - the display is the main reason for me. The Pixel camera is good but they don't have wireless charging, which I really like, and the bezels on the Pixel are huge.
When the Note 8 and the Pixel XL2 are released, I will decide between those 2 and sell the S8+ in all likelihood. I will probably keep the S8 since it is such a nice size for when I don't want a huge device.
