Block Nougat Update - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

Without rooting, is there a way to temporarily block either the Nougat download, or once the download completes, block/hide the update message? I updated to Nougat and ran into issues with some important apps and the bluetooth quality to my vehicle (bandwidth was reduced) and had to reload 6.0.1. I would like to give it a few months before upgrading.
Thanks.

Thanks, unfortunately they removed the ability to disable com.wssyncmldm which disables OTA.
For safety reasons, we did remove and enable some critical packages which not safe to disable. Sorry for that!
– com.samsung.android.firmware.tsp
– com.samsung.firmware.sensorhub
– com.samsung.android.rlc
– com.wssyncmldm
– com.sec.android.fotaclient
– com.ws.dm
– com.samsung.sdm
– com.sec.android.soagent

Any way to keep it from updating then?

You can probably still do this at a command line level rather than a pretty GUI in an app.
adb shell
pm disable com.wssyncmldm
That should disable the app from launching. Please read the help file on pm if you need more info on disabling/enabling apps this way.

You could try to use an older version from APKMirror

I couldn't get the new version, or the old one, or Package Disabler Pro to work. However, I was able to get a different app to work. I used BK Disabler and did a search for "SDM". You then disable both of those packages and you're all set.

Which SDM packages did you disable? (I don't have the app on my phone at the moment). The author of BK Disabler indicated that "com.samsung.sdm" cannot be disabled anymore "due to safety reasons" ... Thanks.

That's only for the Note 7. It'll still work on the S7 Edge. You have a short time to return the app if it doesn't work out for you, so there isn't a lot of risk from a monetary perspective.
Right off hand I don't remember the names of the packages, but when you search for SDM in the app only two show up. Disable both.
Hope this helps!

Thank you so much, it worked! Hoping to wait until Verizon updates to the latest Nougat release as there were a lot of bluetooth issues fixed in it...

Awesome! Glad to have helped!
My wife also has a S7, and she took the update. So, I'm going to keep an eye on her phone, and if/when it looks good to me I'll update mine. Otherwise I'm happy where it is, and I just might leave it alone until my next phone. We'll see.

Is using BK Disabler still working for you? Have you tried going under the System tab and simply blocking the "System Update" items listed there? Would that work as well or does that mess up the phone?

BK Disabler is still working for me. I'm not positive, but I believe the only safe way to block the update is what was already posted earlier. Hope this helps.

What if I want to get rid of OREO update notification? please help

that is some bloat!! they all seem to have bloat but your version and the Korean variants do seem to have a lot more,i'm sure the phones must run a little better once all that is removed, nice one for getting rid.
It has been running smoothly. Also happy not to be constantly nagged by sprint optimizer and other useless apps.

I have the international version but most are the same. I read the above and frosen all with titanium to test. If you have the time, it would be very helpfull to write what every one is doing so, to froze only what everyone needs.. Thanks,
Edit
1. i lost vibrasion
2. when swapping finger from home softkey, it froze for a moment and dont see options serch etc.
3. Lg keyboard goes veeeeery slow in every press..
Do you know which files is for them? Thanks
Edit2 . OK It was my fault. I was frozen by accident LGSystemServer.. Ok now..
Would the bloatware you removed be safe to remove from another model? I have the d803 canadian variant and haven't seen a list of safe apps to remove yet.

I'm not sure how you lost vibration or why your keyboard loads slow. I am not having any those issues. I would recommend posting a screenshot or list, that outlines the differences between mine and yours.

For the most part yes. If you are not a risk taker, I would recommend you use Titanium Backup Pro and freeze the app before removing it (and of course create a full TB backup).

yea I have titanium backup, learning how to use it right now. I'm only rooted though I dont have twrp or cwm installed. Is it a big risk for me to be doing this or do I need them installed because I only plan to root no flash or roms for me.
I can't say with 100% certainty as we have different models. I can tell you from my experience that I was fine with TB backup.

Anyone know if G2 has that "Carrier IQ" people have been referring to. How can we remove it If so?
Thanks for the post!!!
Awesome post! We should keep this populated with adverse effects so we can understand what some of the apps do or don't do.
I froze most of the apps you have listed without any real noted problems.
Thanks!
I'll do my best to update the original posts as others let me know what they find or if I discover any adverse effects. I'll note, having to work with sprint programming has been a bit dicey with what I've frozen. No permanent damage thus far.

I did everything in the first post and now when I reboot, I get an error at bootup. The error is...
Sorry! Unfortunately, Update Device has stopped.
Is there a way to stop this from popping up every time I power on the cell?

I would try re-enabling the sprint services again and then freeze them all leaving update-device the last one to freeze.
I took a closer look and we match. Another option is to give apply frozen filters in TB and post them so we can compare.
What I think is happening is it is still trying to do a firmware check and update (assumption).
Update Device Stopped
ChrisFSU,
I've reverted my phone to stock and went through the list again. I only get the error when update-device is not frozen. If it's already frozen and you have a NAND backup feel free to uninstall. Just keep in mind that you will not be able to use any of the update functions of the phone like PRL, profile, unlock etc..

Package Disabler Pro!! What not to disable...?

Hey everyone! Quick question, I've read many times that "Package Disabler Pro" is the best app to disable all the bloatware.
But I have also read that if you disable all of them or use the "Disable all Bloatware" selection in the app, it causes issues with other apps and services such as samsung say and amongst others.
Can anyone help on this issue? Or is there a solution out there... saying which to disable and which not to?
Any help would be awesome! Thanks!
This is too complex question and next, some packages depends on another. E.g. you can disable ANT+ but you need it if you have a sport watch.
Generally, do not dollow colors in the application. I've found some ping packages which could be important (ANT+).
It depends on your needs/using habits, but there is some that can be disable almost always, yet still there is cases where you may need it.
Few examples:
- you can disable email application and its services since you can (and probably should unless something very specific) use Gmail instead of it (you can set up non-gmail account in Gmail app), so feel free to disable this.
-Google play movies/music/newstand/books - if you dont use these disable them.
-Galaxy apps and its services - i dont see point for this app, only uses are - for getting offers (so claim them before disabling) and galaxy care... any apps you can get on play store, so egt the offers from Galaxy apps and turn it ands its services off.
-Gear VR services - if you dont have Gear VR headset then there is no use for these services and if you get Gear VR afterwards you can just enable those services, its fast and easy.
-SHealth and its service - dont use it? feel free to disable it.
- i dont use Samsung account and its backup options (since you have same functions from google) so if you dont also, feel free to disable it and its related services.
and there is A LOT more, and it all depends on what you want/will use! BUT remember, its very simple and fast to enable them even if you disabled them, with no harm done.
Carefully Checked Before Disabling, but Galaxy S7 Keeps Rebooting
I have carefully checked everything I disabled before doing it, but now my Galaxy S7 keeps rebooting, although not always with the same results. The fact that there's no information about numerous items preloaded on this phone is totally unhelpful!
How does this app work, since it doesn't require root? And is there any chance it will trip the Knox counter on an unrooted phone? I'm very interested in it, but I don't want to lose my tap and pay or my warranty (yet).
I have posted here my extensive list of disabled packages, with no ill effects that I know of:

com.sec.android.widgetapp.samsungapps (maybe Always on Display items are in Widget ? maybe, just I guess)
com.samsung.android.app.galaxyfinder (It's not about this problem but I advice enable it. This is search bar in the menu.)
com.samsung.android.app.aodservice ( edited and solved: This is Always On Display "AOD")
com.sec.factory
com.samsung.android.firmware.tsp
com.samsung.android.app.watchmanager (maybe about watch)
com.samsung.android.sm
and I see you disabled too many useful app like "Wallpaper Cropper, Galaxy Finder". Why you disable these ?
Just try it first what I wrote and check again for Always On Display

Yeah, I see on my Sony Xperia phone that has a custom ROM that there's an option on lockscreen and security that allows you to choose how long does it take for the phone to lock, not sleep but lock, in seconds, like "5 seconds after screen turns off" or "immediately after screen turns off" etc.....on my S7 it just takes forever and I can't find a similar option, sometimes I turn off the screen and after a few minutes I turn it on and it still has locked, sometimes it does it immediately, could there be a workaround ?

How to avoid OTA update so Bixby Button could be remapped?

How can I avoid this OTA update that kills the Bixby button remapping? Is there a way to freeze them with Package Disabler Pro?
Thanks for any thoughts!
EZ Disabler works I believe for nougat. Or, for the time being just don't take any update until an issue has been resolved.
So there is no way. They changed the way the Bixby button is run through the system. The only way to get rid of it is root. You could always not update but that would mean missing important updates. You could always just use Bixby and enjoy using it. I bought the phone because of Bixby and Viv.

This.
With a new SoC and the rush to get the S8 out I'm betting on a slew of updates; especially the first few months. It's one of the reasons I went with an international vs. carrier phone this year. Speaking of carriers, if you're in the U.S. you won't have to worry about updates. There won't be any.

bixby is the new improved feed from samsung.......like s7 Briefing
yes maybe you cannot remap the button but you can disable bixby intergate with apps and update the feed in the backgorund
I think that samsung will put this option in the settings to remap the button because of customer complaints the future will tell us.....
i don't want bixby they should let us choose this option........
hope that will be ok
Keep the original odin file.
Some people don't realize that the remapped button won't work with the screen off, so its only a shortcut button when the screen is on, not that great imo.
We pay 900 for a phone and samsung says it interferes with system function so not allowed. We should be able to sign an electronic disclaimer that we accept resp. If something breaks or whatever and have access to remap keys and unlocked bootloader(even it it makes device a hackers wet dream lol) if we pay for it we should have full control and do what we want. We may as well buy an Apple no nevermind, I wouldnt wipe my ass with an iphone!
You could, you know, tell Samsung to basically go screw themselves and not buy the damned phones, of course.
I thought it would be as easy as opening package disabler pro and freezing the updates. Is that available with EZ package disabler?

Should be, I think package Disabler stopped working with the nougat release but I may be wrong. If you have the pro version I would say give that a shot on a system app you know won't mess up your phone and see if it works. If it doesn't try EZ and hopefully you'll be good to go.
Outbreak... Thank you. I appreciate you staying on topic and helping. I own both those pro apps so I'll just have to try EZ when the new phone actually comes.

Package Disabler Pro - what is safe to disable, and why?

Hello all,
I got Package Disabler Pro yesterday and am looking into slimming the S.EX to get few additional percentages of battery life.
I saw a post about disabling Bixby few days earlier but can't find it anymore so I decided to create a post for experiment with Package Disabler and post their experience.
I will maintain the OP in this thread to list all safe to disable and side effects, if any.
Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
This is from the old Note 7 thread, I'm sure we'll have one here soon. I've disabled Bixby and all the T-Mobil bloat and a few others so far with no problems.

Yes, there are entries for Bixby.
I just installed it and disabled bixby button. What a relief! Great package!
Only thing I disabled was the Setup Wizard. It kept telling me my AT&T SIM card was not from Verizon Wireless, haha. Duh, I know it's not. (I had VzW when I preordered via Samsung.com then just ported over this week).

okay so i wasnt crazy. just clicking through did nothing, good to know
Just grabbed package disabler pro. I just came from a rooted S5 and have always rooted my phones but might not bother this time (plus it isnt available yet anyway). disabled a few things that could obviously go but it was a nightmare trying to find any proper explanations of what different things actually did and what their dependencies are, even trying to google them, I generally just ended up with a list that someone else had produced of things they had disabled, but that doesnt help me decide if *I* should disable it because theres no explanations for what they actually do most of the time (and I could do without spending 10 mins trying to google several hundred packages that MIGHT be good to disable but I can't find an explanation for)!
Surprised there arent sites dedicated to listing all these packages with explanations of exactly what they do and what they affect.

Lol same here but I came from nothing but Nexus devices. I was like wtf is bloatware? Lol
I disabled stuff I knew id never use, was very careful. Didn't touch anything that didn't have a proper name, like those "com.xxxx." packages.
Left Knox alone but killed anything that said bixby.

Only thing I disabled was the Setup Wizard. It kept telling me my AT&T SIM card was not from Verizon Wireless, haha. Duh, I know it's not. (I had VzW when I preordered via Samsung.com then just ported over this week).

It requires you to activate Knox for the program to work, so that popup you saw was the Knox EULA.
Maybe you can disable Knox after, but I didn't try and I wouldn't suggest it. There's an adblocker too for Samsung devices, AdHell, which also relies on Knox.
It's weird, these apps are using the hardcore "security" feature to give you features with no root.
I just disabled the two System Updates app to prevent my phone from updating. I re routed my bixby button for the camera and i'd like to keep it that way. I also disabled a couple other crap that I couldn't uninstall like some verizon apps.

LG package disabler and Oreo update

So I've been using LG package Disabler to disable most of the stock LG bloatware. Works great!
My only concern is that the Oreo update (when it comes to Europe) may not handle these packages being disabled well.
I can re enable them but just curious as to whether I will need to or not.
Thanks!

I don't have Oreo myself yet, but I believe the safest way to go is enabling them before you update. The worst case scenario is having a required app missing, which may cause a spectrum of problems. Better safe than sorry.
There's a feature to export the list of all of your disabled apps to a .XML in the 3-dot menu, so re-enabling them shouldn't be much of an issue either.

Ok thanks very much for your help!
Was not sure what that 'export to xml' feature was for, but it seems quite useful actually.
