Hello all,
I got Package Disabler Pro yesterday and am looking into slimming the S.EX to get few additional percentages of battery life.
I saw a post about disabling Bixby few days earlier but can't find it anymore so I decided to create a post for experiment with Package Disabler and post their experience.
I will maintain the OP in this thread to list all safe to disable and side effects, if any.
Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
This is from the old Note 7 thread, I'm sure we'll have one here soon. I've disabled Bixby and all the T-Mobil bloat and a few others so far with no problems.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/tm...ackage-disabler-pro-apps-getting-rid-t3443355
This is what I blocked so far. No issues I have ran into.
I am a verizon S8+.
It would be awesome if someone could maybe explain what each thing does if they know...
I want to know if it allows to disable Bixby button!

Yes, there are entries for Bixby.
I just installed it and disabled bixby button. What a relief! Great package!
Only thing I disabled was the Setup Wizard. It kept telling me my AT&T SIM card was not from Verizon Wireless, haha. Duh, I know it's not. (I had VzW when I preordered via Samsung.com then just ported over this week).
did anyone else get a popup about Knox and some weird samsung terms and conditions when installing and running package disabler? i freaked out and uninstalled and havent retried since.

Didn't get any popups at all. Package Disabler Pro specifically says that it doesn't trip Knox. Maybe your paranoid with your expensive new toy.
disabling the various bixby packages still doesn't let me remap after the april update...

Just grabbed package disabler pro. I just came from a rooted S5 and have always rooted my phones but might not bother this time (plus it isnt available yet anyway). disabled a few things that could obviously go but it was a nightmare trying to find any proper explanations of what different things actually did and what their dependencies are, even trying to google them, I generally just ended up with a list that someone else had produced of things they had disabled, but that doesnt help me decide if *I* should disable it because theres no explanations for what they actually do most of the time (and I could do without spending 10 mins trying to google several hundred packages that MIGHT be good to disable but I can't find an explanation for)!
Surprised there arent sites dedicated to listing all these packages with explanations of exactly what they do and what they affect.

Lol same here but I came from nothing but Nexus devices. I was like wtf is bloatware? Lol
I disabled stuff I knew id never use, was very careful. Didn't touch anything that didn't have a proper name, like those "com.xxxx." packages.
Left Knox alone but killed anything that said bixby.

It requires you to activate Knox for the program to work, so that popup you saw was the Knox EULA.
Maybe you can disable Knox after, but I didn't try and I wouldn't suggest it. There's an adblocker too for Samsung devices, AdHell, which also relies on Knox.
It's weird, these apps are using the hardcore "security" feature to give you features with no root.
I just disabled the two System Updates app to prevent my phone from updating. I re routed my bixby button for the camera and i'd like to keep it that way. I also disabled a couple other crap that I couldn't uninstall like some verizon apps.

Hey guys, I just got a new Note 3 and am having and issue.
I get bloat ware will be an issue unless I root but forcing me to use this Verizon Backup Assistant is too much! Is there anyway to get rid of it? I don't even see it listed as an app yet it's always listed under "Accounts" leading me to believe it's not just there but running and synchronizing as well.
I did a search last night and found many posts of people annoyed with this and some solutions but none seem to work anymore, maybe because those solutions were old? I want as far as to go into My Verizon website and delete all my contacts then reset/wipe my phone and during the Wizard unchecked to backup contacts; yet even all that didn't work. "Backup Assistant Plus" still there under services .... Please help.

It is one of the few apps that you cannot 'turn off' through the application manager in settings. Surely there must be a way to disable it without root.

You won't be able to remove it without root. It's one of the many advantages of having a rooted device, you can remove any of the bloat that you want.

Thank you very much for your speedy response. Is there still no way to root if your N3 is on 4.4.2?

There currently is no root method for 4.4.2 unless a pre-rooted version. If you've taken the OTA you're stuck for now as there is no way to go back to previous builds to gain root access. I never download and install an OTA, there is too much of a risk where you may never have a rooted device again.
I am glad I have thus far held off on the OTA, although I am lucky it's not bugging me like it sounds like it bugs some people, it hasn't even tried to download it yet. Rooting is becoming more and more temping.

Mine downloaded it the first time it appeared, then started asking me twice a day about 3 weeks ago. I held off for 2 weeks and about a week ago it popped up and asked me at 5:53am. In my half-asleep state, I somehow managed to tell it to go ahead and do it. Damnit.
Hey everyone! Quick question, I've read many times that "Package Disabler Pro" is the best app to disable all the bloatware.
But I have also read that if you disable all of them or use the "Disable all Bloatware" selection in the app, it causes issues with other apps and services such as samsung say and amongst others.
Can anyone help on this issue? Or is there a solution out there... saying which to disable and which not to?
Any help would be awesome! Thanks!
This is too complex question and next, some packages depends on another. E.g. you can disable ANT+ but you need it if you have a sport watch.
Generally, do not dollow colors in the application. I've found some ping packages which could be important (ANT+).
It depends on your needs/using habits, but there is some that can be disable almost always, yet still there is cases where you may need it.
Few examples:
- you can disable email application and its services since you can (and probably should unless something very specific) use Gmail instead of it (you can set up non-gmail account in Gmail app), so feel free to disable this.
-Google play movies/music/newstand/books - if you dont use these disable them.
-Galaxy apps and its services - i dont see point for this app, only uses are - for getting offers (so claim them before disabling) and galaxy care... any apps you can get on play store, so egt the offers from Galaxy apps and turn it ands its services off.
-Gear VR services - if you dont have Gear VR headset then there is no use for these services and if you get Gear VR afterwards you can just enable those services, its fast and easy.
-SHealth and its service - dont use it? feel free to disable it.
- i dont use Samsung account and its backup options (since you have same functions from google) so if you dont also, feel free to disable it and its related services.
and there is A LOT more, and it all depends on what you want/will use! BUT remember, its very simple and fast to enable them even if you disabled them, with no harm done.
Carefully Checked Before Disabling, but Galaxy S7 Keeps Rebooting
I have carefully checked everything I disabled before doing it, but now my Galaxy S7 keeps rebooting, although not always with the same results. The fact that there's no information about numerous items preloaded on this phone is totally unhelpful!
How does this app work, since it doesn't require root? And is there any chance it will trip the Knox counter on an unrooted phone? I'm very interested in it, but I don't want to lose my tap and pay or my warranty (yet).
I have posted here my extensive list of disabled packages, with no ill effects that I know of:

com.sec.android.widgetapp.samsungapps (maybe Always on Display items are in Widget ? maybe, just I guess)
com.samsung.android.app.galaxyfinder (It's not about this problem but I advice enable it. This is search bar in the menu.)
com.samsung.android.app.aodservice ( edited and solved: This is Always On Display "AOD")
com.sec.factory
com.samsung.android.firmware.tsp
com.samsung.android.app.watchmanager (maybe about watch)
com.samsung.android.sm
and I see you disabled too many useful app like "Wallpaper Cropper, Galaxy Finder". Why you disable these ?
Just try it first what I wrote and check again for Always On Display

Thnx a lot, I will try this out right now, many of these packages were disabled from an xlm file I found, but some were disabled by me, most of the "useful" apps are disabled cause theres something else replacing that function already, I use quickpik for gallery and cropping, nova launcher for launcher, galaxy finder I have no idea what it does, but I've had tons of other brands and never needed anything from motorola, htc or LG, I guess I like to stick with a pure android experience, thank you for your help !

Yeah, I see on my Sony Xperia phone that has a custom ROM that there's an option on lockscreen and security that allows you to choose how long does it take for the phone to lock, not sleep but lock, in seconds, like "5 seconds after screen turns off" or "immediately after screen turns off" etc.....on my S7 it just takes forever and I can't find a similar option, sometimes I turn off the screen and after a few minutes I turn it on and it still has locked, sometimes it does it immediately, could there be a workaround ?

Hey, any of you root people, could you pull the voicemail apk off your phone so I can use it with my flashed universal phone? Have tried the s6 edge software but no go. Thank you
This is simple through titanium backup. No one?
The one on official firmware will not install correctly. But this is an older one that works. Download and install like normal.

Thanks again seems to be working
Once you set up, it may take a while to actually activate. I just left the app, came back to it 5-10 min later, and it was running normally.
Ya took me almost an hr. Worked well though. Downloaded many that didn't work. Just needed 1 that did.
It doesn't appear to actually work. You all just think it is.
If you leave a vm it wont download it (or mine doesn't seem to).
If you go into settings and pref, it shows it's not verified still also. You just stopped seeing the prompt because once the screen times out it is no longer on top but if you fully kill the app and re-open it still says verifying.
These are my findings at least? If you go into settings and pref does it say you're verified?
Yeah I couldn't get it to work either
Didn't work for me either

Are you sure?
I've got the same issues all the others did. It can't activate. Just because it stops popping it up doesn't mean it's activated now either. That message suppresses after a while.
It seems to tie into something that it and Sprint Zone use from what I can tell and thus why won't work on these non-branded firmwares.
Leave yourself a VM and see if it shows up...
It usually wouldn't go past the account verification at all. I'm not 100 %sure yet. But it did go farther than before and I'm trying it out now to verify. Will get back
If you press home and go back into it the app will hide the message but it still wont work.
I actually found the outbound activation messages in it that are failing to send even.
So this is another bust.
I think our best luck is if someone can either reverse eng. this thing to modify it to not try to use whatever sprint bloat it's looking for or we find what it's looking for and find a way to put it on our phones.
Sadly it's not a new issue. All the Nexus people have had the issue from day 1. And it seems to be only sprint because they won't make a darn public compatible app.
I can't use GVoice as I already use it for a second number and I don't like any of the third party ones that make you use conditional call forwarding to them to do this...
Another question for you all. I've noticed if NO voicemail app is installed I do not get any notification I have voicemails. If I do install one (despite it not working) I get notified because it says pending voicemail download at least.
With no VM App installed are your phones telling you that you got VM?
Yeah same boat here man. Looks like we beating a dead horse
Yea, Sprint should upload visual voicemail to the Play Store like T-Mobile does. So stupid.

How can I avoid this OTA update that kills the Bixby button remapping? Is there a way to freeze them with Package Disabler Pro?
Thanks for any thoughts!
EZ Disabler works I believe for nougat. Or, for the time being just don't take any update until an issue has been resolved.
So there is no way. They changed the way the Bixby button is run through the system. The only way to get rid of it is root. You could always not update but that would mean missing important updates. You could always just use Bixby and enjoy using it. I bought the phone because of Bixby and Viv.

This.
With a new SoC and the rush to get the S8 out I'm betting on a slew of updates; especially the first few months. It's one of the reasons I went with an international vs. carrier phone this year. Speaking of carriers, if you're in the U.S. you won't have to worry about updates. There won't be any.

bixby is the new improved feed from samsung.......like s7 Briefing
yes maybe you cannot remap the button but you can disable bixby intergate with apps and update the feed in the backgorund
I think that samsung will put this option in the settings to remap the button because of customer complaints the future will tell us.....
i don't want bixby they should let us choose this option........
hope that will be ok
Keep the original odin file.
Some people don't realize that the remapped button won't work with the screen off, so its only a shortcut button when the screen is on, not that great imo.
We pay 900 for a phone and samsung says it interferes with system function so not allowed. We should be able to sign an electronic disclaimer that we accept resp. If something breaks or whatever and have access to remap keys and unlocked bootloader(even it it makes device a hackers wet dream lol) if we pay for it we should have full control and do what we want. We may as well buy an Apple no nevermind, I wouldnt wipe my ass with an iphone!
You could, you know, tell Samsung to basically go screw themselves and not buy the damned phones, of course.
I thought it would be as easy as opening package disabler pro and freezing the updates. Is that available with EZ package disabler?

Should be, I think package Disabler stopped working with the nougat release but I may be wrong. If you have the pro version I would say give that a shot on a system app you know won't mess up your phone and see if it works. If it doesn't try EZ and hopefully you'll be good to go.
Outbreak... Thank you. I appreciate you staying on topic and helping. I own both those pro apps so I'll just have to try EZ when the new phone actually comes.
I noticed some lag on my S8 and I realized that it might be lookout that's causing the lag, as I had it on a prior phone and it caused some lag on that phone.
Go to settings > apps > and find lookout and just press the disable button. For me, at least, I noticed a slight improvement in performance.
disclaimer: yes, I'm sure there are benefits to having Lookout scan and ensure all your apps are safe, but I get all my apps from the play store, and stick with ones I know. Do this at your own risk/responsibility.
Some other things I did that seemed to have helped:
1. I stopped opening the official facebook app. I use a FB wrapper app called 'simple pro' for facebook. Way lighter, less resource intensive.
2. I had installed Greenify to try to help hibernate apps, but I uninstalled it. I think the way it was trying to hibernate apps was causing some lag. Just my observation/assumption. But after I uninstalled, my phone is running way smoother.
That was the only reason why I paid for the disabling app was to get rid of lookout!

Yes, for me, it reduced the lag/stutter I was seeing here and there.
As a side, I was actually also using Greenify app to try to save battery life, but I noticed that after I UNINSTALLED it, my s8 is also running smoother.
I'll update the original post w/ things I was doing to improve performance - now it's way smoother.
