Ram Management problem? - Huawei P9 Lite Questions & Answers

Hi,
My phone is the 2gb variant. i know 2gb is not much these days, but every couple of apps i run, one restarts when i try to go back in. I have removed those apps from the protected list and i'm on the power plan that doenst help with battery usage, yet they restart. I have the 4.4. B160 version of emui.
For example, i run one app, lets say facebook ( i know its a ****ty app, just an example) and its all good.
Then i run Messenger (same, just an example)
Then i go back to Facebook --- Boom--- restart app instead of saving in memory
Any help?

EMUI is known not be good at RAM management i have the 3gb model and i can loose up to 200-300MB of ram sometimes.

If you have the proper knowledge, you might want to try out Cyanogenmod. It handles RAM much better.

Anybody knows if this problem persists on EMUI Nouga? I think it does. And I hope OTA official Nougat fixes it.. because the ram management is sooo broken

Cannot accept call, Slider wont work when the phone is busy.

This has happened to me numerous times and i'm wondering if its a common issue:
You receive a call and you cant slide the slide the slider to accept the call for the life of you. A sew seconds later you get a dialog saying that the Dialer app is not responding; Force close /Wait.
This usually happens when you're trying to load a web page or playing a game. (anything processor intensive)
Is there a fix for this? Maybe set the priority of the dialer process higher if you have root ?

this happened a lot with G1... but never with Nexus One. I even watched movies or listened to music etc., and still the call will come through immediately.
I wonder how many apps you have installed, and how much memory you have left?
Cleaning up all unnecessary apps you never use + checking all automated services (such as feed readers, news/weather updaters, Email probers, etc. should be set to decent times (e.g. my news feed reader never loads news automatically, only on app start, weather updates every 4 hours, etc.)
I have a LOT of apps installed (around 180). Only about 20MB internal disk space left.
In fact I frequently need to uninstall apps to install new ones
I don t have a lot of apps running. Usually about 40-50MB RAM free.

WOW WOW WO
180 apps? How can you possibly make use of them all? I have 120 right now, and already feel it's too much (like... do we really ever use Google Goggles, or Finance?, or Wikitude, or... or...)
I have about 90MB internal disk space left, and I don't want to go much lower than that
But I guess what's killing you is that a lot of these apps, although maybe not running permanently, will wake up from time to time, to check your location, to update this or that, to do this or that....
I would try to reduce the number a lot and see whether the problem goes away, maybe say at 50MB internal space.
I always tell myself, even if it's cool to show off an app to a friend, if I don't really use it a lot or at all, I can delete it and always install it again if I want to - that's the beauty of the market (also paid apps remain paid, and can be redownloaded for free, unless you have refunded them).
hope it helps
another thing that could give you another 40MB, + using the second memory bank which is currently not in use on stock is to root the phone and flash cyanogen's CM 5.0 beta5 (or wait until it's out of beta).
That's maybe why I have 90 MB left at 120 apps, and you have only 20 MB left at 180 apps.
This would also provide more RAM, and you could run smoother with the number of apps open.
but just do the rooting if you really want to, as it voids warranty

Thanks for the advice. cyanogen's ROMs are very tempting, but looking at the changes it looks like it gets better every week. I think I'll wait for a bit before rooting and jump in at 5.0 FINAL.

Users average RAM available

Hi all,
I've had this phone for a few days now and love it. However I find I have very little RAM available.
I have on average around 30-40mb of ram available and the phone sometimes slows down quite a bit. I've ad a look at the running apps and the main culprit was SPB Shell launcher which was using around 50mb. I have since stopped using this but I am still only getting around 40-50mb remaining (with timescape disabled) and again a sluggish phone at times.
How is everyone else's?
I am thinking of doing a factory reset and start afresh to see what app may be causing the problem.
Any other suggestions or is this normal with this phone?
Thanks for your replies.
I have the same. I thought it was down to having over a thousand contacts all duplicated in exchange and google.
I have 130m of internal space available. Is there any way of re assigning it as you can in windows mobile?

My Average Free ram @150 MB
135 - 140ΜΒ here.
Have been checking with Advanced Task Killer (ofcourse NOT automatically set to kill everything, but fully manually every now and then), and noticed that there were times when the phone just left plenty of unnecessary apps wondering around in the background. Apps that are not the "always-on" by android system. So I kill EVERYTHING else except from:
1) Clock
2) TrackID
3) LiveWare
4) Media Sharing
5) Maps
6) Hanashi (WTF is that?!? it ALWAYS comes back by system.)
7) Setup wizard
(What remains always active by system also depends on the widgets you have, e.g. I have TrackID widget, you might not have it, so you wont need it.)
and have even noticed better battery performance...
EG, during nightime, I left the phone untouched (not used ATK), and when I woke up, I had a 12-13% battery drop, while the other day, after a fresh cleaning before sleeping, got around 4-5% drop. Both times with same conditions...
I have about 140 free and nerver under 100

What to you recommend to stop the unused processes from re starting again?

Try Advanced Task Killer
Yeah I have about 150mb free.
And can I say coming from the x10, this phone is rediculously smooth. I love it!
Can we expect more free RAM once it's rooted/a custom fw is available?
This obsession about RAM needs to stop!!!!! 2.3 manages memory very well and you shouldn't be having any issues with the phone, unless you start messing with it (task killing the wrong things for example).. My phone is running really smoothly.

The reason I asked is that my phone does not run smoothly at times but very laggy and some items (contacts, emails etc) can take an age to load (well not an age but seconds but it feels like an age )
I was just wondering if this was the norm or not.

Yeap, 2.3 handles RAM almos perfectly. EG, if you open as many apps as you want and just leave them in the background, when you try to launch a HUGE game (eg Asphalt 6), the system will free as much RAM as required for the game to run smoothly.
BUT, I have noticed that some apps are left idle without me usng them (and without being system triggered apps, which when closed, are not resprang), and are not automatically closed by system. I tested leaving overnight the phone without killing anything after a days usage (with more than 15 apps in the background), and while being at 15% when left at night (around 01:00 am), it was off in the morning (7:30 am).
Then I did a fresh reset to the device, noticed what apps are automatically opened by system, and protected them (unchecked them) from Advanced Task Killer (which was set to manual), so that it will not shut them down when I click the "kill all" button. Next night, I killed all non-system apps (that do not restart if you do no action), and left the phone overnight again to see if there is any difference. Battery dropped around 5%.
I did this twice under same conditions (same time gap, BT open etc.), and results were almost the same +/- 2%.
So IMHO, if you use a task killer app wisely, you could manage to get better battery performance when the phone is idle, but you will NOT get better performance (smoother UI etc.)
Again, all these IMHO.
@dragunov - completely agree with everything you're saying.. it's the difference between knowing what you're doing and blindly killing tasks because someone said it helps!!!
for the OP - would suggest figuring out what it is you've got running that's causing the lag cos it's not the phone hardware/ OS that's at fault - This is the only drawback of Android vs iPhone -the QA of the apps on the market doesn't pick up this sort of problem.

Thanks, thats what I intend to do. A factory reset and the re-install gradually my apps to see which ones are the problems.
When I first got the phone I loaded it up with apps so it will now be difficult to retrace so a fresh start is what I will do.
A quick update. I have done a factory reset and although the phone is smoother I still only have 40-50mb free (only app I installed was swype).
Can I just ask what free ram other users have?
Thanks
Right now.. 60Mb.
I had about 150 out of the box while taskkiller always said about 5 apps running background (not installed by me).
Now yesterday my arc froze while browsing the web and rebootet itself (screen was scary, single pixles loosing light while some were still on till everything was off).
Now that was the only time the arc did that and afterwards task killer now (after killing apps) only shows 2 or 3 apps running background and up to 195MB free RAM which is cool but scary at the same time ...
Still can recieve phone calls though and everything works ... well Im happy for more RAM
Oh yeah, got swype on my whitelist.
Honestly I don't understand the need for more ram?
having 60mb is similar to having 200mb, it's all about applications reserving their spots, once they needed they'll kick in, otherwise they stay idle ( talking about system apps and well developed applications )
even if you have 60mb you still can run games that require 100mb... smoothly
the lag some face is due to background application using the processor
I usese autokiller memory optimizer. See unlike the other appear that kill everything, autokiller mo just optimizes the Android system so you wont have to go hunting for those apps.

SM-N900 RAM Usage

Hi All
I have an SM-N900 (exynos variant) running 4.4.2 XXUDNB2.
I am usually never bothered about the RAM usage even if it shows very high value regularly. While typing this msg I checked and it was 2.37 out of 2.66. I trust android itself to do the necessary memory management !!!
What I have been seeing recently is this :
Dolphin is trying to load a page... maybe lots of pic nd all.... while doing this if I try to bring down the notification bar, ir does come down but gets stuck on the way.... similarly if I try to scroll the page it gets stuck while doing it.... essentially it is not at all smooth...
Now, if I just launch the task manager, clear some memory and retry, everything works smoothly...
The Note 3 is supposed to be a beast.... when the beast stutters in front of my friends its rather annoying/embarrassing at times !!!
Anyone seeing something similar ?

Well just remeber that your phone its like a pc, if your running several apps on the background the system will run of memory for other apps, its try android manage memory and all but if it doesnt have free memory to load up an app, it will close some to free ram and that will cause lag on the phone, my recomendation is to look on the running apps tab and check witch apps at runing and close/froze the ones that u dont use to clear up some ram, im usually at 600 free ram all the time, if i clear ram i get almost 1gb free. so you should check what apps are messing with you.

[q]very high system ram usage[lollipop][5.0][lrx21t]

Hi ,new user on xda
i have a nexus 4
running completely stock 5.0 LRX21T NO ROOT
i have noticed very high ram usage on 5.0 as compared to 4.4 after the update
normally had ~1gb Ram free but now only ~500mb remains free
on ruuning applications screen,it shows
system-~750mb
apps-~600 mb
why is system using so much Ram,wasnt the case in 4.4...
is it bcoz of ART ?
is this normal?
same problem..on my nexus 4 after 5.0 update
After reboot, system ram usage stays low (read 100 to 150mb) for 1 to 2 days.. But suddenly shoots up to more than 1gb.
Does anyone know the root cause.
I think i found the root cause to this..
In Settings -> Sound & Notifications
change the setting When Device is locked -- Don't show notifications at all
By doing this, the system ram usage never shot up above 200mb for the past 2 days for me.
previously I had to reboot my device every night before going to bed.
I will further observe if this is the root cause and revert back.

art by default use more ram than dalvic to run applications so this might be normal for you. on top of that there is some memory leak found in android l.
the important thing to now is how android manage ram. when you open an application it is loaded in the ram. whether you close the application or let it run on the backround android does not clean the memory occupied by the application until it has to. android LMK (low memory killer) clean the ram memory occupied by a program denpending on the priority id of the app. for example system apps (system ui) has lowest priority so LMK never kills that app. other apps have different priority. an application that runs in the backround (facebook messenger or whatsup) have lower priority than a game so when android need more ram it will empty the ram occupied by the game first and if there is more need for ram it will later empty the ram occupied by the backround app.
Long story short android will handle the ram as it sees fit. unlike windows, android will keep the memory full so apps can be launched faster. the problem is that android l has memory leak so you need to reboot your device every few days if you feel it starts to have some lags.
apps like task killers do more harm than good in terms of performance or lags. also facebook and facebook messenger are very badly written apps so they will consume a lot of memory. also antiviruses (especially cm security) are responsible for lags and memory leaks.
hope i helped you somehow understand android and find your problem (if there is one)
P.S. sorry for the long post!!

This is why Google needs to give us an extended power menu. I understand they say it shouldn't be necessary under normal circumstances, but I consider every single nexus update to be a beta, of sorts...and we all know how buggy betas can be from time to time. They're very unpredictable, and you never know if you'll need to reboot. Saying it's simply never necessary for something that is basically beta is just plain egotistical as hell.

my philosophy is that when you buy a nexus device, because it is a very simple os without the good stuff that lg/sammy or any other oem android manufacturer put on their phone(i am refereeing to the shortcuts power menu or toggles and other things that make your life easier and not the whole change of the os like touchwizz) you have to root so you can do your own small changes as you see fit (and fortunately for me i live in europe where there is a European law that states that you have the right to do whatever you want to the software of your device an be eligible to waranty).
So if you root your device you can do everything you want. for me on kit kat it was xposed and gravity box. on android l, yesterday i installed simple aosp.
In my opinion pure android with a twist is the way to go! and of course a custom kernel for better battery life and ad free for no ads!!
P.S. a quote by a fellow nexus user: A nexus without root is like an angel without wings

I do have root access and a custom kernel, but I prefer the nexus factory images, and the only system change I want is an extended power menu. Have you ever actually looked for an odexed version of an extended power menu flashable zip??? Don't waste your time. The last one I saw myself was for Nexus S. It can be done, but it never IS done. Stuff like that I could almost definitely do myself, but I just don't have the time anymore to sit down and read how to do it, actually do it, test it, etc. I haven't done any android dev at all in a few years and I'm rusty as hell, not to mention how much things have changed for android in the last two years.

Poor RAM management

I'm finding the RAM management on the S8+ and probably therefore the S8 to be heavily throttled.
My device memory is split as:
4GB total:
System and apps: 2.8GB
Available: 600MB
Reserved: 639MB
The problem I am seeing is that I am never seeing memory consumption above 2.8GB so that the last 600MB is never touched whatever I open. This aggressive throttling is evident If switch between a mere 5 or 6 open apps, the first ones opened have been closed and have to completely re-open and re-load even though there is a is about a 600MB chunk of memory sitting around so this last 600MB is being totally wasted. This is validated when I go to the built in memory manager within Device maintenance and it only shows the last 3-4 apps opened as being active. Believe Samsung needs to adapt the memory management to be less aggressive here as it is impacting on multitasking quite severely.
Right now I have system and apps using 2.4gb., Available space 1gb, reserved 639mb.
I find that if you back out of an app by pressing back, it closes and you have to reload, such as facebook, messages, phone, gmail etc.
I find that if I use the home button to back out of apps they remain in memory. Apps like facebook have to resync when I go in but are still in memory.
What apps are you using to have them close on you?
Exynos or Snapdragon? Mine is UK Exynos maybe there is a difference.
I'm multitasking, so using the app switch button. I'm not backing out which closes apps. Processor is nothing to do with apps closing and I have Exynos. In my experiments I'm using the web browser, whatsapp, email, music player, maps and samsung health.
Hasn't it been like that for ages, Jonathan-H?
i can understand the op's point, especially if multitasking is needed, but the behavior described is actually a good thing for a phone. otherwise you can have too many apps eating up memory that you don't want. the phone doesn't know the user intends on multitasking back and forth. there was a time when there were pages of complaints about apps staying on after user moved on from it, so this is specifically something they would have designed for. there's no right answer here short of a full adaptable ai of some kind.
Unfortunately even Pixel is bad with RAM Management. Till now only Oneplus 3 and Xiaomi Mi5s Plus with 6 GB of RAM keep many apps in memory. I had an iPhone 7 Plus before S8 Plus and all the apps were in the same state like when I left them even after one day. So till now iOS is the fastest OS for me because it keeps apps in memory. Even Youtube stayed in Memory and on S8 Plus it reloads after one hour. I guess it's about keeping battery under control on S8 Plus and this is the reason. On the other hand, the first time launch of apps is faster on S8 Plus compared to iPhone. If somehow Android can keep apps in memory and also control the battery consumption, it can be perfect.

If you never get to use the RAM you paid for then it is not a good thing. It's poor RAM management. We're not talking about it closing down apps once the RAM is even close to the limit, we're talking about it closing apps withing minutes and long before the last 20% of RAM is used up which is a sizeable chunk. And having RAM empty is old school thought which is now accepted to be bad practice and was just a benchmark used to see that your system was not being stressed. These days it's better to have as much in RAM as possible rather than waste it empty and have the system need to reload things.

For serious multitaskers like me, it leads to the opposite problem: apps keep getting reloaded from scratch and that ruins battery life even more.
I'd like to add my voice into this. I am also a heavy multitasker. I have a set of standard 6-8 apps that constantly keep getting kicked out of memory and closed out of the carousel. It is not a RAM limitation issue as I am, like the OP, always below the limit. It just seems that Samsung made the memory management much too aggressive. I already set all possible options in the OS to control what is monitored and suspended and such, but this made no difference.
Same for me. At first reading this I though I posted this because of the exact numbers.

If it is 'forced' to refresh the displayed content it is not keeping it in memory.
You need to use a device where the issue is not exhibited to see how memory management should work.
Sadly my S8 Exynos can not keep more than half a dozen apps fully in the background without then forcing the content to reload/refresh when going back into those apps, from Facebook, YouTube, Photos, Gallery, newsstand, Play Music.

I already set all possible options in the OS to control what is monitored and suspended and such, but this made no difference.

Exactly my issue and I have done likewise to no avail unfortunately.

The last update of the Gallery from Play Store made it start almost instantly. Maybe they need to put all the stock apps in Play Store so they start fast. About the difference between App refresh and App reload, it's totally different thing. We all agree with refresh and we don't like reload.
Android Doze
The problem is Android Doze, which freezes every app once it's in the background. Solution is simple: Settings -> Device Maintenance-> Battery -> Battery usage -> Optimize menu -> All apps. Untick the ones you need and, probably, they will remain in memory for while. So far, working for me.
so no solution to this thus far?? any root tweaks or build prop tweaks useful to solve this??? or we still have a dump phone
