Hi folks,
Just back from my first holiday in France with my HD2 and, despite setting weather, Facebook, Twitter and email not to automatically download while roaming, something seemed to be establishing a GPRS/EDGE connection occasionally.
Any suggestions on what this could be or how to identify it?
Thanks,
Kris
stocks? weather? time sync?
If you dont want to have any data charges then I strongly recomend NoDatainRoaming by Dynamic+. It automatically switches off data connection (same as modoco no data) when you leave your home area but when you get back to your home area it turns it back on. No more forgeting to turn it off.

Same here .
i just returned from the USA .
before i walked on the plane i turned off all data connections .
i turned on my phone to take some pictures with it while in the USA . came home to find out i have about 120$ of fee's .
:/
you guys are lucky
I took a trip up to Gunma prefecture in Japan for new year. I came back to Taiwan and I had 800 us dollars phone charge... I didn't even take pictures with the phone I just brought it with me!
Had a similar issue in Greece. Footprints and google maps both seem to automatically start the data connection when they start. I have a feeling that the compass may do as well. Could be something to do with quick GPS trying to download updates?
I've been using modoco no data to good effect. May give NoDatainRoaming a go if it's automatic
same thing on mu dubai trip.. .These connections turn on automatically .
NoData works for me, just configure before you power down the phone to fly
RSS Reader has no Roaming setting so if you've got it on AUTO, best switch that off.
A quick search would certainly have brought the answer to all of you!
Don't be lazy!
Anyway, here's the solution: Go to "All Settings" --> Connections --> Connections --> Advanced --> Select Networks
There, simply select "My Work Network" everywhere.
With that setting, your phone is only allowed to use WiFi. There's no need for third party tools or anything, it's that simple.
My Location?
I think it is more important to find out what is making data connection and how to disable it, rather than using nodata to suppress everything. What if you really need to use HSPA/GRPS during roaming? You need to know how to enable data connection and do your thing without the HD2 automatically doing a lot of other data traffic in the background.
Alex,
That's exactly my concern - I'd like to be able to use the net knowing the HD2 isn't going to pull down a load of other stuff as well.
The weather tab is set not to connect while roaming, stocks are the same and RSS is configured not to automatically update at all.
The only two other things people mentioned are time sync and my location - how can I tell if those are connecting while roaming.
Kris
does anyone know how my location actually works?... cell broadcasting, gps, or how?... i set up the send no location info in settings and automaticly decline htc location service and the phone still knows were i am....

I have no idea HD2 is doing timesync, or how I can disable it. As for my location, disable it in the Settings tab.

I believe phone gets cell tower ID via normal handshake operation. Then it asks Google to translate it to a city name. It is the second part that consumes internet data traffic.
There is yet another possibility of hidden data traffic. I think HD2 has AGPS, but there is not interface to enable/disable it. Similar to My Location, AGPS translates cell tower ID to location, and triangulates to pin point where you are. Much quicker than GPS, but not as precise. If it is so, then it explains why taking pictures leads to data traffic.
I have been trying to check the Phone locating service at Htcsense.com but i can't get it to work.
When i login to my account and click on phone finding i get the message that i need to activate that function on my phone, the thing is that i already did that, over and over and over again.. and nothing works.
Anyone else had that problem?
Well - Htcsense.com seems rather buggy for now.
Some times i can make all the functions works - other times i can't.
Mine is working fine in Denmark.

I've had the same problem. I forgot to set the HTC Sense update schedule to "As items change (Push)"
go to Settings -> Accounts & sync -> HTC Sense -> Update schedule -> As items change (Push)
At least that was the problem I had, hope it helps

that was already set as default for me, and i have tried to change it and then change back. i have tried to change every setting even with wifi on and even with it off (in case that was any problem). i have removed my account from the phone and even at htcsense.com and then readded it. i even tried with a different email adress when i created my sense account again. I have tried everything now i think and htcsense.com says my phone finder is inactivated and i need to go to "Settings>location>phone finder" and turn it on.. but it IS turned on :S
The lock phone function doesn't work either.. but htcsense.com says it does
can it have anything to do with that i run the stock rom but rooted and with S-Off?
I have the exact same problem as you, and my htc sense sync is also by default on as items change (push). I was about to have another try and getting it to work so will let you know if I find anything. I can get htc sense to make my phone ring loudly but havent tried locking it down, other than the location finder just tells me I need to turn on phone finder which I have done many times like you.
I am in New Zealand if that makes any difference using a desire z from UK.
similar story here. Desire Z from UK, but HTCSense.com is not syncing my contacts, messages, or location. cannot call/make it ring.
to be clear, I have set the Account to 'push-sync' and I have also checked the box in "Location" setting for my phone to be able to be found.
....and I was looking forward to being able to use this feature as I lose my phone in the house too often
HTCSense.com told me that I have my "phone finder" turned off on my phone, right from the start, even though that setting is definitely on
I rooted my phone last night, with S-OFF too. I can still make my phone ring from HTCSense.com, though it seems it needs a data connection to do that - because I had been using my phone with Internet pass-through and (as per another thread I posted) that made it lose the data connection when I'd finished, and it couldn't make the phone ring till I restarted it.
Even though I've specifically sync'd HTCSense.com from the phone, I still don't see any of my Contacts or Messages on there (same before root/S-OFF too).
It might be a gps issue, can you confirm that your gps is working on other apps?
My gps is working fine as is Phone locator on htcsense.com
My GPS works fine on other apps.
I've called up HTC Europe (UK branch) and spoke to customer services.
They are aware of the problem and said they couldn't give a definite time frame, they just hoped to sort it in the next few weeks.
Kinda sucks as this was 1 of the features I was really looking forward to with the D-Z.

Thanks. Which problem though, just the locating thing or also the lack of Contacts/Messages ?

All of it. On Dashboards on htcsense.com it doesn't pick up the handset - says phone finder is off in locations.
I heard that some people got it to work by signing in with a google email address but this didn't make any difference to me.
None of the features work on htcsense for me.

I'm already signed for HTCSense account from start with google email address.
Have all the problems as described in thread. But a month ago everything seems working at least I can make my phone ringing and have all the contacts and data synced.
P.S. Just tried all services from htcsense.com and seems everything started to work but very slooooowly. For example I get phone locked after one hour after send a command from web site.
after some waiting i noticed that all the services at htcsense.com now is working for me, i guess it was Htc that had problems
I just had a look, and it's still telling me my phone finder settings are off on the phone (they're not).
No messages/contacts being sync'd either.

Exactly same problem, I don't know how to fix it
Sent from my HTC Vision
I see my contacts etc. but for location has me in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean! Location is fine in Maps etc. so something weird happening at the server end.
I tried this a week or two ago and faced similar issues. At first it wouldn't detect the phone location tracking as being on. After a while, it finally picked up my phone but said I was in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Africa. The next day, I went outside for 15 minutes with the GPS on and only then did it get my location correctly. It looks like the website can't use the wifi/cell tower approximate locationing system and needs a clear GPS signal to get the location. This limits the usability of the feature somewhat.

Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Africa is exactly where it put me!!! still cant get it to work tho
I selected the option in Menu/Settings/Location to reinstall Locations. Also then got myself a GPS lock. Still tells me my "Phone Finder" is off at HTCSense.com, and most of the other stuff not working either.
I have the US997 G6 with the bootloader unlocked and twrp and magisk installed. I was wonder if there was a way to enable wifi calling while on the AT&T network, from what I've read so far only branded AT&T G6's have wifi calling enabled. I am just wondering if it is possible to change any setting now that I have rooted the phone to get it to work.
To be more specific on why I want this feature enabled, I work in the Gulf of Mexico on an oil and gas production facility, and there is no cell signal out here at all, but we have decent internet access. I don't really want to make calls as much as I want to be able receive my text messages and after googling some info I've found suggests that wifi calling needs to be enabled for sms and mms messages to go through. One of the biggest annoyances is when I return to land and get signal so many messages that have piled up for the last 15 days hit the phone at once and there have been occasion where I had to reboot the phone due to it partially locking up.
Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bump! I would like some info on this as I am in a similar situation. I don't have to go days on end like you do without cell signal, but it would still be nice to have this feature on my US997 variant of the G6.
The update to Google Voice is supposed to allow this directly from the Google Voice app.
ive tried google voice app and im not getting any of my text messages, i can get all my voice, unless there is something more that i need to set up, il look on google and report back with what i find
Bump. I am trying to get ATT visual voice mail to work on my US997 and I want access to the LG native email app.
Thanks in advance,
Glenn
Would be amazing if there was a way. I wonder if it's just a buildprop change or something easy like that. Way back in the old days when verizon charged for tethering all you needed to do was root and change a value in a database from 0 to 1 to unlock the ability to turn on tethering.
I still haven't found anything on how to enable this, google voice didnt work for me. Googleing the issue again brought me to my own post on here.
So Google tracks cell phones wherever they go even when airplane mode is on (so I assume even when wifi, any cellular service and location services are off too). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0G6mUyIgyg
This may be old news, this topic may have been covered (but I cannot find it) and it's probably better for a more general forum. However, I would still like to know if Google's tracking service(s) can be uninstalled/disabled on an unlocked/rooted E4 while still leaving location services partially intact because I'd still like to be able to use maps etc. ?

Only if you flash a rom without gapps. And use microG instead of full Google services. It's a process. But doable
So I was rooting my Google store bought pixel 4 and missed a step. Needless to say I had to sideload a full ota to recover it. But I'm pretty sure I accidentally loaded the verzion version. I got all the verizon apps that showed up when I rebooted the phone. I went back and wiped everything in recovery mode and tried sideloading QD1A.190821.007.A3 and it keeps erroring out. This is the firmware that Im 90% sure what was on my phone. Is there a way to get back to factory google store firmware or am I screwed now? I am on a verizon sim but phone was bought on launch day from the google store. Its also noted that I am currently on QD1A.190821.014 firmware. This doesn't appear to be the verizon firmware.
The Verizon apps appear not based on which ROM version you load, but instead based on whether you have a Verizon SIM in the phone during setup.
If you loaded the wrong ROM onto the phone, you may not be able to recover by sideloading an OTA. You should be able to recover by doing a complete reflash of the image you want (the image version, not the OTA version).
What error is it giving you?
I cant remember the exact error but it would error out about 45% through the flashing. I am currently running QD1A.190821.014 which appears to the google FI, T'Mobile firmware. I still have the ability to turn OEM Unlock on in my settings, so it appears I am ok. I just wish they had better wording on which firmwares for the unlocked ones form the google store and others.

Regarding loading the wrong one, I did the same thing because the December update had a discrepancy between the announcement and the download page about which rom applies to which phones. I switched back and forth between QQ1B.191205.011 and QQ1B.191205.012.A1 before they finally corrected it, but everything worked fine on both versions as far as I could tell.
About the Verizon apps, if you're on Verizon or one of its MVNOs, if it installs other stuff, you'll want to leave it. Don't confuse My Verizon and My Verizon Services. My Verizon can be uninstalled, but if you mess with My Verizon Services, you'll end up losing things like wifi calling.

That's not true. You can go to all apps and show system. MVS can't be deleted without root but you can disable it with no adverse effects. They can't get into your device to see what you have installed and when you installed it, but who wants to give them that info anyway?

As of Android 8, disabling My Verizon Services doesn't permit wifi calling because it depended on that application for that functionality. It's hard to remember what else was troublesome, but I thought there was something else which didn't function once it was disabled.
I don't have wifi calling anymore on Visible, and I never used Android 9 because of the wifi scan throttling mess anyway.
Would you mind checking that your wifi calling works on your pixel 4, disabling My Verizon Services, rebooting, switching on airplane mode, then enabling wifi only, and then try making a phone call? I'm interested to know if that behavior has changed. Thanks!
Here's some more information. It certainly seems true for others as well:
https://community.verizonwireless.c...ng-since-Android-8-update/td-p/1042025/page/2
And many other XDA threads correlating the two:
https://www.google.com/search?q=sit...69i57j69i58.6651j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Maybe things have changed in Android 9 or 10, but please test it out if you haven't already!
EDIT:
It looks like you tested it out in another XDA thread already where others lost wifi calling when it was disabled, but you said you were still able to make wifi calls. It's strange that you're the only one who can disable My Verizon Services and make wifi calls, but others can't. Very strange.

My wife has a Verizon device Pixel 3 locked bl and I have a Pixel 4 and they both have MVS disabled and both can call on wifi. I just tested again to make sure. Really, I'm the only one? Gotta love that. I hate that they can get into my device without my knowing and see what and when I installed stuff.
